I always saw so many people by this cafe, and it is located in this weird mall of health-related businesses for the most part and office space, so it is easy to miss. But right on the corner, is this small cafe that still takes walk ins which is always nice in our COVID world. We wanted just a few desserts to go and the verdict? They looked fancier than they ended up tasting in my mouth. Don't get me wrong, they were pretty good cookies, but for the price point the flavor just didn't line up. They have lots of hot food too which people do rave about, so perhaps I needed to try lunch there, but for me the chocolate cookies were just fine, the little tart was also just so so, but they did look REALLY pretty in the box! Dulce Cafe was a cute little cafe, and I enjoyed a few hours' worth of work catch up here. Seating inside was plentiful and cozy, and service was friendly. The variety of pastries here was impressive, and I had a hard time choosing which one to sample. I think the eclair would have been helped very much by a little bit of heat, but as it stood, the wrapper was a little spongy and mushy while the filling was a bit grainy. I didn't get much flavor from the intensely green frosting on top, and some of the pistachio crumble tasted a bit stale. I wish I had another eclair to compare it to, but this one was definitely not my favorite. The redeeming factor was the fresh pistachio taste within the filling; I appreciate that it wasn't all extract. OMG. I just ordered (delivery via Postmates) for the first time and the food was amazing. I literally came straight here to write a review. The food tasted so fresh, and my order was 100% correct. The portions are generous for the sandwiches, so I stashed the salad I ordered to have later for dinner. The only suggestion/wish I have is that they add more options for vegans--maybe these are offered in-store but I couldn't see them via the Postmates system. The staff was rude and the coffee here is very disappointing. The staff was very cold with us - no kind greetings and they were clearly frustrated when we pointed out that our order was completely messed up. The espresso machine was down this time and this photo is what they served us at first. I will say we came at a very busy time but that was no excuse at all for their attitudes and poor quality coffee. This place is cute! Ate lunch here for the first time with a friend. You order at the counter and they give you a number for your table. I had an Italian panini. It was just so-so. Not much flavor to it. It came with chips or a salad, and I had chips. The chips were probably just Lays Potato Chips, so nothing special there. The gelato however was delicious! I had coconut, and I would highly recommend it! The other pastries and desserts also looked really good. I'll be back to give it another try, but will be ordering a different lunch item. read more

Oh, Dulce...how I wish you were around the corner! This is our go-to stop in Durham. It's close to Southpoint, and so much better than the options there. Fresh, homemade food, and the desserts will knock your socks off. As delicious as they are beautiful, and a variety to suit all palates. Each one is a piece of art. Coconut cake is my favorite, and when I say "cake," I mean delicate and delicious coconut macarons make the cake layer. Chewy and flavorful and a great surprise. This cake is just sweet enough and not overpowering. They take great care to describe the desserts, which I appreciate, so I always choose things I'd like to try. When desserts are that pretty, it would be easy to choose something but be disappointed if it isn't your favorite flavor. Yes, the prices are a bit high for the sandwiches, but the pastries and coffee are a steal for their quality so I feel like that balances things out. I've tried several of their speciality cakes, macarons, and eclairs. I highly recommend the Forbidden Fruit cake if it's available, and the macarons are perfectly executed. I wasn't so sold on the eclairs though. I agree with other reviews that the flavor could be a bit stronger. I'm also a big fan of the green apple, brie, and turkey panini. The portion size was quite generous. I'm always quite surprised that Dulce Cafe isn't busier when I've stopped in. Food was 5/5. The service we got last night was 0-1/5. The girl at the front counter was rude and impatient. This was my first time there with 3 other friends. We're all looking at the menu figuring out what we want, everything looks good. Then she asks me "are you ready yet?" In a rude tone. I say I'm actually not and let my friend go before me. Then I order the Turkey panini and leave a tip. It was delicious. My friends and I are sitting there talking and before we know it's about 8:15 and everyone is gone, but we didn't realize the time or what time they closed. The same girl from the front counter comes to passive aggressively clean the table next to us. We say "oh sorry are you guys closed?" Again we've never been here. She's like yeah we closed at 8. And yet no one let us know...if we would've been told 5 minutes before or even directly at 8, we would have cleaned up and left right then. But no one told us anything. So we go to leave and an older lady walks in and asks "are you guys open?" The girl AGAIN says "no just cause our lights are on and the door is open doesn't mean we're open. But I can still sell you a pastry" like girl what ??? And the lady looked frazzled and not sure what to do. So rude for no reason...I work at a restaurant and when it's almost closing time we ALWAYS let guests know, and 9/10 times they leave with no problem. Not sure if this girl was having a bad day but even if you are you should never make paying guests feel uncomfortable in your restaurant. I will be back for the food, but wanted to share my unfortunate experience with the customer service. read more

It's my second time at this cafe and the desserts are wonderful. But I was surprised at the need for more courtesy by the staff. There was an error on my sandwich order as it was brought to the table by the server and I commented it was not how I had ordered it. I heard no apologies from her, she just walked away with my sandwich to go have it redone. Had to wait a long time for a new order to be brought back to me. I found this experience to be rather unpleasant and I am hesitant to return. Seeing an employee eating cookies as they take your order was also disconcerting. read more

If you live in Durham, you are lucky to have access to this cafe. Its desserts are a step above other coffee and tea shops nearby. The cheesecake, the Persian, the blue dome thing, all divine. (They are often sold out by around 5 PM, so we've not tried them all). We've also tried the sandwiches and while they may not be visually stunning, they are very tasty, seasoned and condimented very well, the ingredients high quality. The coffee here is good (like many places in the area that do not roast their own beans, it uses Counter Culture) but not fancy latte art "hipster" nor leveraging fancy gourmet syrup concoctions. But why overshadow the desserts? The chocolates are good, the cookies, the fancy cakes... That's why you come here. My only complaint is that they are becoming a victim of their own success -- sometimes only one person operating as cashier, getting the pastries, making the coffee, submitting orders. I've seen some customers leave because they feel like their being ignored. That's really just a sign that it's worth going here. Be patient. read more

They have a very nice, varied menu esp. salads. They have a very nice ambience, with patio seating as well. The service is top notch and they do anything to make your visit enjoyable. We decided to spilt the meatloaf sandwich. We added a garden salad to to compliment it.. Neither of us liked the sandwich. It just had a unapealing taste - not at all like a meatloaf you would think. My girlfriend did not finish hers. The waiter said it is more of a 'curry meatloaf'. But we did not even taste that. We will be back, because it's just a nice place to hang and enjoy your surroundings. And the prices are fair. Found this lil gem through yelp and lemme tell ya could not have been happier!!! The sign kind of blends into the building but not too terribly hard to find. Both desserts were DELICIOUS!!! Love this little cafe. Food is a little pricey, but I had a great cortado and my breakfast burrito was yummy. I subbed avocado for the sausage. I have only experienced take out here, but my turkey apple brie sandwich was heavenly!! It was very flavorful and cheesy. I had a choice of chips or a side salad to go along with the sandwich and I happily chose the salad, which came with a balsamic dressing. For dessert my husband and I enjoyed a couple of strawberry and pistachio macaroons, which were the cherry on top of a delicious meal as we headed out of town for a weekend trip. To his credit, he walked by to ask me how it was. Good. Not too sweet? No! I just couldn't bear to break it to him. But the cup was literally coated in chocolate sauce. My sandwich on the other hand was quite tasty! I had the panini with basil, mozzarella, and tomato. The bread was really delicious, and the basil fresh. I only wish the vinaigrette had a little more spunk to it. I'd also asked for the side to be chips; but when I opened my to-go box back home, I found a salad instead.
