    dou hua--silken tofu pudding
    Lizzy L.

I came here with college friends this weekend and almost came back again the next day because they were so many things I wanted to try from the menu! I was pretty excited that The Bean Flower opened up in Durham because they have such a unique menu, and housemade syrups like ube and pandan. I ordered a wintermelon tea with boba which was so refreshing on a hot day. I would recommend choosing a lower level of sweetness if you prefer less sweet drinks. The boba had the perfect chewy consistency. I also split the following desserts with friends: Iced Cendol--this was our favorite out of the ones we tried. It was layered with coconut milk, pandan jelly, mung bean, and red bean. It had the perfect level of sweetness and the flavors just worked together so well. Dou Hua--silken tofu pudding in ginger syrup. I know you may not think of tofu as a traditional dessert type of food, but it's one of my favorite things to eat in Hong Kong and The Bean Flower did a really good job making it! It was silky and melted in my mouth and the ginger was just right, not too overpowering or spicy. Sago with mango and coconut milk--I love the tiny little tapioca sago in this dessert. We wanted to order the almond pudding but because it was still early in the day, they said that the pudding was still setting and wasn't ready to be served yet. I'll be back to try that and other items the next time I'm in town!

I heard about this place through a random ad I got and thought I would check it out. When I went it was during their winter specials and I got their seasonal Milo hot chocolate and their fizz drink at the time. The Milo hot chocolate was great and really felt nostalgic with all tbd flavors coming together on a cold day. The fizz drink we got was also pretty good and something unique I did not have before. The atmosphere inside is okay. There is seating and tables available. Not necessarily a place to do work (very few tables for that) but a good place to meet up with friends. The staff was super helpful and friendly. Great to chat with as well! The drinks are definitely on the pricier side but I think it's good for the occasional drink. Plenty of parking as well. Overall, I liked my first experience here and definitely want to come back again to try their other offerings. Although pricey, definitely think it's worth it for a special occasion here and there.

This is a new place to get unique desserts in Durham! I did feel the prices were a little high for the quantity of dessert you get, but it was still delicious. The ambiance is super cute and would be a great place to hang out and grab a Sweet treat!

The Bean Flower is a new cafe to open up in the Durham area. I saw their promotions on Instagram and was excited by the menu which offered classic Asian desserts and drinks. The staff is very friendly and the service is personal. I enjoyed speaking with the cashier and the staff making the drinks seemed to be good natured and happy as they conversed with each other. Overall the environment is very nice to meet with a friend and the vibe of the cafe is unlike the other Asian cafes in RDU. The mural is particularly beautiful. I ordered a Thai tea and it was not the best in this area. The tea was not as strong as distinct Thai tea taste should be. The condensed milk was not mixed in well with the drink and no matter how much I mixed it with my straw it could not incorporate. May have been due to the coldness of the drink or the unique shape of the cup. For a one size drink that looks large, they also add a lot of ice. It is not as much drink as I thought. Overall it is a nice place but I would not likely go again for personal preference of drinks and atmosphere.

Cute new spot around Durham! Vibes are pretty nice inside. They have a good selection of asian desserts that other boba places typically don't have. I got a red bean sago, which was pretty good but overly pricey at $10. Staff are very nice and happy to answer any questions. There is some seating inside and free wifi, but it's tough to study inside since there's really only one table which is really low.

We had not heard about this place until seeing a post on Instagram so we decided to check them out. They specialize in boba and milk teas, plus some Asian desserts we haven't seen anywhere else in the area. They are Asian, Latina and Queer owned, which makes them fit perfectly fine in Durham. The decor is bright and fun, and we noticed they also sell Nguyen Coffee from Vietnam (we order it online). We ordered a chai, almond pudding and an iced Vietnamese coffee. If I had one suggestion, it would be to mix up the condensed milk in the coffee first before pouring it over ice; otherwise condensed milk doesn't mix easily in a cold liquid. It looks like they are developing a following, so we're happy to have this option in Durham.

Cute new dessert shop! The desserts here are refreshing and not too sweet! The cashier was friendly and helpful. I had the Dou Hua and Matcha oat milk tea, which was $4 and $7 respectively. The Duo Hua is silken tofu in a ginger brown sugar syrup. I gave one less star because I liked this but did not love it. It was the first time I tried it. I felt that it tasted like something I could put together. There needs to been more seating, as well. The matcha tasted as expected. If you live nearby, this is a quick, tasty spot. The desserts unique. Staff is friendly.

We love an AAPI owned small business! The decor, the vibes are so good here! The employees are so nice and really helpful to find your perfect dessert. They have a variety of milk tea and regular tea options. I felt the drinks were really high quality and made from natural tea leaves and a variety of dairy and nondairy options. They also have Asian desserts like che, sago, coffee jelly, and tofu pudding that you can fully customize with Asian fruits and for sweetness. These are items I haven't found anywhere else in the triangle. Also, this place is so cute, full of comfy seating and fun decor. It's a perfect place to do some work or to bring a group of friends to hang out!

Matcha, matcha limeade with lychee stars
    Adrian

We ordered the matcha and matcha limeade with lychee stars. Both were amazing! The matcha was made very well, in both drinks there was a perfect balance of flavor. The lychee stars are also just adorable. The ordering process was easy and the staff was friendly. The drinks also came out quickly. The shop itself has nice seating and the decor is inviting. The merch is also super cute! Definitely would recommend.

    Menu

This place overwhelmingly smelled not great / kind of bathroom-y inside - thought about dipping as soon as I stepped inside. Not sure if it is always like this or if it was just an anomaly. Ordered a drink that was very sweet originally (it was a non customizable drink) and then ordered another drink to dilute it. The wintermelon flavor had a nutty note I did not love and chrysanthemum flavor tasted like hojicha - neither were how I expected them to be. Went to sit outside and the tables/chairs were fully in the sun without any shade options. Service was great though. Hate to write this about a small business. Definitely has potential with a couple improvements.

The Bean Flower has a ton of South East Asian desserts you don't really find anywhere else in NC (the sago desserts are very good, especially the mango sago). The location is pretty secure and the staff are super friendly.

Overall, the espresso drinks I've had have been consistent. Nothing extraordinary, but good. Their breakfast sandwiches and burritos are quite tasty and are always on my short list for ordering. Between a coffee and a modest burrito, you're looking at $13. (Welcome to 2025, right?) My main issue is their regular coffee. I've tried their cold brew, American over ice, and others, but no matter what I do, I can't get a good cup of coffee that's bold rather than medium or light. I've ordered something I'd enjoy three times, but for some reason, it's never tasted great, and I end up not finishing it. That's a problem when I'm paying $4 per coffee. So, if you prefer dark or bold coffee, I wouldn't recommend this chain or this location. Bean Trader does a better job. Overall, it's a solid shop and seems to be a local favorite, but for those of us craving a very dark brew, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

The entrance was pretty hard to find; it is actually at the back of the building, but if you drive all the way around you should see it. It was very quiet when I came in on a Wednesday morning and I was able to get a lot of work done. I was a little sad that they charged extra for nondairy milk here because they don't at the other location, but I suppose $.25 isn't bad considering other places charge a dollar. Aside from that, no complaints! The baristas were super friendly and my drink was ready in no time.

It looks like a small neighborhood spot, but the moment you walk through the doors, you're immediately welcomed by a charming bakery counter filled with fresh pastries, coffee, and sandwiches. The ambiance is absolutely stunning--warm, inviting, and thoughtfully designed. I honestly spent half the meal just taking it all in because every detail was beautiful. Now, let's talk about the food... phenomenal doesn't even begin to describe it. Everything was incredibly fresh, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. Our brunch came out surprisingly fast without sacrificing quality, and every bite was bursting with flavor. The service was equally impressive. Everyone was welcoming, attentive, and genuinely seemed to enjoy making sure guests had a great experience. You could tell there was pride in both the food and the hospitality. If you're anywhere near Durham, this restaurant is an absolute must-visit. Whether you're stopping in for coffee and a pastry, grabbing a sandwich, or sitting down for brunch, you won't be disappointed. I'll definitely be back, and this has quickly become one of my favorite restaurants in the area. Five stars isn't enough--this place deserves 100.

Yonderlust is more than just a coffee shop--it's one of those spaces where you can easily spend an entire afternoon without realizing how much time has passed. It's a fantastic study and work spot: a mix of table sizes, plenty of outlets, and a relatively quiet, calm environment that makes it easy to settle in. It has solid coffee: Drinks here are consistently pretty good. I usually go for their Campfire Latte (a signature for a reason) or whatever seasonal syrup they're featuring, and their matcha latte is reliable too. It has actual, warm food: simple but satisfying sandwiches with enough variety to make for a perfect study snack or light lunch. I am often disappointed when coffee shops only offer cold pastries. It has entertainment: I love taking a quick study break to browse the shop's outdoor gear and clothing; it honestly feels a little like being transported to the West Coast for a moment (give me some Oregan vibes!). Service has always been quick and friendly. I wouldn't say any single thing here is the best in Durham--but together, it is special! There are many days when I find myself craving a few cozy hours at Yonderlust, followed by a quick dessert next door at Rose's.

"Eastern-inspired ice cream and other sweets, next door to La Vaquita in Durham"…read more Stopped by this lovely shop at 7pm on a Saturday evening. The name a little hard to catch, but it's a small greenish building immediately beside La Vaquita on Chapel Hill Road (with the giant cow on the roof). The outdoor area is quite nice, with a fenced outdoor area having swings and other seating/ space for families. We were greeted quite warmly when we arrived. They had maybe ~15 flavors of ice cream or similar (will return to that in a second) as well as other sweets like baklava. But this is not your ordinary ice cream shop-- the flavors were unusual. Cucumber, date, and others caught my eye, but I didn't try those. Unlike one Yelp reviewer's comment, when we went, there was both a regular pistachio as well as a vegan pistachio option. I got something different-- I tried the falooda... a Persian inspired ice-cream-like dish with rose syrup and small cooked noodles. The texture is slightly like an italian ice, but the flavor was great. However, there's more-- on a table off to the side, there were separate lemon and cherry flavors that we were invited to try adding to the falooda. Let me tell you-- either addition turned a good dish into a heavenly dish! Sooooo good. Try it, but only if you're open to "this isn't just ice cream". There were also some wafer cookies to the side we were invited to have with our respective dishes. Seating inside was stools at benches facing a thin window bar-- outside is nicer if you have a big group and/ or if weather is nice, but it was fine. I did stop by the restroom briefly, and it was clean, too. Overall, definitely plan to come back to this eastern-inspired ice cream shop, and I encourage others to give it a try too!
