My wife's Grandma Nina had a bad tooth to be extracted. She's 82 years old with a pacemaker, and the last time someone used a dental drill on her it sent her to the hospital! The original dentist we went to didn't want to touch it. The specialist they recommended us to didn't want to mess with it. We did a lot of searching on the web and found this office and we are so happy we did! Dr. Longwe's office got us in pretty quickly for the consultation. He was very nice and patient with Grandma Nina, especially as she only spoke Ukrainian. He took his time with her and made her feel like a human being, instead of someone to shove into a chair and back out the door, like many dental practices. The next week was the extraction and Dr. Longwe handled it very quickly and professionally. The tooth came out in several pieces, but Grandma Nina scarcely felt any pain. All in all, he did the work in 10 to 15 minutes. He sewed up her jaw and gave her gauze pads to take home. Grandma Nina was so grateful she gave him a hug! It's the next day and Grandma Nina's face has almost no swelling. She no longer needs the pain medication and is doing quite well. From now on, Dulles Oral Surgical Center will handle all our oral surgical needs. read more

Absolute worst insurance experience I've ever had, and it's not even close. If you have United Healthcare Medical and need something done that would be covered under medical insurance (like the coronoidectomy that I had) DO NOT GO HERE!!! I know it says on the UHC website that they are in-network. DR. LONGWE ISN'T! The practice is though... Honestly I'm not even sure where to start on this nightmare I've been living for over 6 months. Basically I'm out $7600 because the billing specialist doesn't seem capable of filling anything out properly. She's very nice over the phone but I've had maybe 3 different claims submitted to insurance and none of them have been done correctly, according to UHC. She says she's been trying to get Dr. Longwe to be in network, but it's taking years. I had to pay nearly $10,000 up front but I figured it would be fine since UHC told me they were in network and that the procedure would be covered under my medical plan. Well neither has turned out to be the case because of how the claim has been submitted. Oh, and there's only one billing specialist, Katie. So if she's out of the office, you're out of luck. Again, she's very nice, but I don't know if she really knows how to do her job correctly. On to my actual experience... when I got my wisdom teeth extracted previously, I had no real issues. However when I got my coronoidectomy done, I had severe pain and woke up before the procedure was finished. My eyes were open and everything. I asked for more painkillers and was basically told too bad. Dr. Longwe had said "your jaw will be sore for a couple of weeks." Yeah, that was an extreme understatement. I was in extreme pain for multiple weeks. I was given no additional instructions for aftercare. It feels like my jaw has still not fully healed over 6 months later. I am planning on getting someone else to look at it to make sure I don't also have to worry about potential medical negligence. read more

I recently had a consultation that led into 14 extractions ( it was all deemed necessary for my health by my general dentist whom I trust deeply ) throughout the experience I had a few odd encounters. First off, during the exam the technician, I can't remember her name but she was a young lady, initially everything was great. Next comes the standing X-Ray , I'm familiar with this process and procedure. I am left standing there for almost 5 minutes, head locked into the machine , not aware that the technician had walked away and begun chatting and laughing with her fellow younger colleagues, seemingly forgetting there was someone waiting for her just down the hall , in sight no less. I had to physically yell out to this woman to come and let me know if I could step away from the machine. She then didn't even acknowledge that she had left her patient unattended, I was pretty upset, understandably in my opinion. I had mentioned this to Dr.Longwe as soon as he stepped in, he told me " I'll have a talk with them, that's not how we do business here " I was alright with that outcome, I honestly just wanted to tell him how his staff acted without him present. Now moving on to the next issue, I come in for the surgery, before I'm put under there are no problems, perhaps bristly bedside manners. I woke up a few times during the procedure, I waved my hands around trying to tell them I was awake. When I wake up after the surgery , I had a immediate denture that was supposed to be placed before I even woke up, although my sedated brain wasn't functioning well, I could tell that it wasn't there. ( I've had this procedure before with all of the teeth on the top being removed ) As I am desperately trying to get my point across, the tech grabs a pen and paper, I ask and she has no idea what I'm talking about. She goes to ask about the immediate denture and comes back telling me that Dr.Longwe would be along shortly to place the denture in. When Dr.Longwe came in he said he had forgotten about it . Then as I as getting up to leave, I almost fall because we'll I just had surgery and haven't exactly woke up all the way. I had assumed that they would help us out to the parking lot, that was the case at the last office I had this operation done at. ( I would've used them again but they no longer offer sedation) Once I had made it home , on the 4-5th day after surgery I had run out of the medication that was helping me through the recovery process at which point I called the office and was told I needed to come in to the office for an appointment for them to prescribe more which is fine but I live almost 2 hours away, I get there, I get into the appointment and Dr.Longwe and I speak and I tell him i need more medication because I am in an astronomical amount of pain, he sends more in and says this will last you till Friday. The prescription lasted a day longer then expected and as I was still in quite a large amount of pain, I called the on call surgeon to see about about possible refill and was told that they would refill it in the afternoon and not to worry, for the next 5-6 hours I try to get in contact with the on call surgeon regarding why it called been called in hours and hours later, my pharmacy was closing soon and wouldn't open again until Monday morning. I finally get a call back after leaving 2 voice mails, Dr.Longwe tells me I took the medication more quickly then the system allows for, even though I took it as prescribed. And that even though I'm in a lot more pain then they predicted he says " it is what it is " then informs me they called in Advil instead. I was made to feel like I am someone begging for pain medication, I just wanted relief from the mind numbing pain I was experiencing. I will not be recommending this business to another person because of these issues, I wish I had selected a different office for this procedure. read more

I had Ludwig's Angina which is a severe infection from a visit with another oral surgeon. I went to Fairfax Hospital where Dr Longwe performed emergency surgery on me to drain the infection. I was in ICU for 4 days and then was in his care after being discharged from the hospital. He had me on an antibiotic regimen for the course of treatment which is exactly what I needed. He did everything right and was very professional. I will forever remember his treatment of me and will forever be thankful. No words can express my gratitude. read more

My father had an ulcer on his tongue and got referred by his dentist for a biopsy. Went for a consultation that took an hour wait and less than 5 minutes of an actual meeting with dr. Edward. Dr. Edward didn't explain well, we talked most of the time with the nurse. He said removing the ulcer will be a simple procedure. He removed the ulcer the other day and sent it to a lab for a biopsy, the cut after the procedure was big with 7 stitches. My father suffered from severe pain after the procedure for days. We asked Dr. Edward about the possibility of cancer but he doubted it. The biopsy result came out as mouth cancer. Dr. Edward said he didn't expect the result, and referred us otolaryngologist (ENT) for the next step. ENT doctor told us he needs another surgery to remove cancer. Because of Dr. Edward's bad decision as a doctor, now my father is having 2 times surgery to cutting his tongue. Dr. Edward should have done biopsy with a needle first. Dr. Edward's bad bedside manner is unprofessional and this can result misdiagnoses with malpractice. read more

I had to have two teeth extracted and Dr. Longwe was the one that I chose to perform this operation. I am glad that I did. He offers local and general anesthesia for oral surgery. He was repairing the damage done by another dentist. I have nothing but good things to say about my experience here. He has a great personality and made me feel at ease, which isn't easy for a dentist to do. The receptionist Katie was great and his assistants were very good. I got an appointment quickly, and waited very little in the waiting room. I am writing this the day after the surgery and I have very little pain. I am very pleased with my experience. read more

they had convenient scheduling options that were great for me since i live 20 miles away and traffic can be hit or miss around here. All of the staff were very friendly from the time I set up the appointment to the very end of the procedure. I think Dr. Longwe could tell I was nervous about being there and getting my mouth worked on, the Dr. and his staff made sure I felt comfortable the whole way through. Zero stars and nothing more. Went to the consultation that took Fifty Four minutes wait time to see Dr.Longwe. He took under 2 minutes from the time he entered the room, to checking the extractions for two impacted teeth that was recommended by my regular dentist, to typing out the pricing and treatment plan. He left the room and that was it. Charged $99 which was not covered by my Delta Dental plan because of the word "Consultation" and not "Problem focused examination" as a billing code. First impression: Office was unfriendly. No warm greetings, no conversations to make a patient comfortable, nothing like any other dental office I have been to. I should have taken this as a warning and RUN. But I returned, as I thought I wrong and the glowing reviews on the internet were right. Day of extractions: Money taken upfront BEFORE the procedure. Just saying. Again, there was no warm welcome, hardly a greeting from the staff, just a glum murmur for a "Good afternoon". I was the only patient at the time. Was taken in quickly and given verbal instructions about what to eat post-extraction. Before she applied the anesthesia gel, I told her that one of the teeth that were being extracted had given me trouble during a root canal and that it was not easy to numb it because of an extra nerve. She said ok and continued talking about the food I should and shouldn't eat. She applies the anesthetic gel. Doctor walks in 5 minutes later. Just a glum, serious 'How are you?" for a greeting. I was quick to tell him about my extra nerve in the tooth. The only sentence he said was "You will be numb. No one comes here without getting numb". Gives me an electronic pad to sign. Didn't say what I was signing, but I guessed it was a disclaimer. He and the assistant signed electronically too in my presence. He did not check to see if the gel had worked and if my gums were numb. Instead he went right in with the needle and started injecting the Novocain, 3 shots in all, around the area. I was screaming in pain. By the time he was done with the first one, I was ready to walk out. This is the first time ever that I had experienced such a callous dentist. Second shot, and I was crying in pain. Then the third one was coming and I was refusing to let him do it. I just got through the 3rd shot, shaking and crying. All through the ordeal and his only words were; "It's a needle. Needles hurt...this is why people want to be put to sleep for extractions". I was not happy but still held out for hope that the actual extraction will go smoothly. Five quiet minutes later Dr.Longwe asked "How is your lip?" and I said "It feels numb". Then he took his pliers and started working. Did not poke and prod around the area or check in any other way to see if it was actually ready to work on. I felt a lot of pressure, heard cracking sounds and knew my tooth was breaking off in to bits. I thought he will suck my brain out along with the tooth. Next, he started on the other tooth. The one I warned him about. During the extraction, I felt pain. I shouted out in pain. He stopped and tried again to proceed. Again I shouted and he gave me a 4th shot of anesthesia. The Novocain had not kicked in and he proceeded to work on the tooth. It was brittle too after a root canal that was done some years ago. He stops and tells the assistant that he needs "to cut it". They quickly get the equipment ready and start cutting the tooth and I could still feel pain in my gum near the adjoining tooth. The doctor finished his work and left the room without so much as a word. He wasn't talking through the process either (and there's no music playing to mute the sounds of the procedure) so comfort is at minimal if nothing. The assistant said to call if there's anything resulting from the extraction. It all ended in 45 minutes. I walked out of their with so much pain, while still numb around my mouth. Don't believe any of the 5 star reviews on the net. Makes me wonder who is writing all that. He has no bedside manner, not a doctor that chit chats or tries to find out your dental history, pain tolerance or any such information. He doesn't care about all that. Just goes right in and gets through the job regardless of how you feel You have been warned. read more

My 16 year old son had his impacted wisdom teeth surgical removed by Dr. Longwe. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Longwe's bedside manner, surgical skills and after care. The entire staff was GREAT. They genuinely cared about my son's level of comfort before, during and after the surgery. Dr. Longwe is an amazing Oral and maxillofacial surgeon. I came to Dr. Longwe after my orthodontist recommended his expertise in what I was looking to get fixed; my asymmetry mainly. From the first office visit I knew I was in good hands. He has a very welcoming staff, Jessica was instrumental in getting my insurance approved, Katie never hesitated to help me when I called, and Sharita always calmed my nerves when I came in. I had double jaw surgery under Dr. Longwe and he went over the entire procedure with me in a very professional and concise manner. I had many questions and he took the time to help alleviate my concerns. After surgery, I had tons of questions and I would message him directly often. He was always there for me and would promptly respond back. During recovery and with the office visits that ensued, I could see the results as my face transformed to what he had envisioned from my first consultation. The staff very unfriendly. Dr. Longwe is not a very caring and gentle dr. His assistant put the numbing gel in my mouth, he did not even give me a warning or ask if I am ok before he stick the needle he. He poke me 3 time with the needles and it hurt so much I wanted to cry. Through out the procedure he never ask me once if I am ok or that I am in pain even through I told him that was scare and feel very nervous.he was really rough. I was so scare I thought I was not going to make it. I has a lesion in my gum and he had to remove it.i would think twice going back to him. I am just glad that it was over. read more
