Going through security was the most infuriating experience that I've had in the course of my time flying. The lack of communication from T.S.A, the overpriotization of tsa pre customers, and their general lethargic attitude was beyond infuriating. For a regional airport, I was very surprised that it took as long as it did to get through. This was partly due to them, again not even communicating with each other. Of every airport that I have used the Duluth International Airport is definitely my favorite for ease of use, beautiful facilities and a friendly and helpful staff. In a time when air travel can be a huge pain and it seems that so many other airports have forgotten the customer experience the Duluth International Airport is taking a different approach. From the time you arrive at Duluth International Airport you are greeted with ample parking including covered parking in the parking ramp. There is also a covered Skywalk from the parking ramp to the beautiful James L. Oberstar terminal building. Inside, the terminal is bright and open with a whole wall of windows allowing sunlight. The lines at check-in always are quick and easy for dropping off any checked baggage and the staff is friendly. Then, it's time to go upstairs to the security checkpoint which may be the fastest security line I have ever used in an airport. In the gate area there is comfortable seating prior to boarding as well as charging stations for your electronics. There is also the new Club DLH available for a charge for those who need to do some work or some quiet relaxation prior to your flight. Sometimes it is a little more expensive to fly into Duluth as opposed to MSP, but if you can make it work, it's always worth it. Here's hoping the cost differential of the drive down 35 continues to get closer so that more people can take advantage of all that Duluth International Airport has to offer! read more

Electrical outlets! There are two or three "stands" across all the boarding gates. NO PLUGS at the seats. Almost no plugs on the walls. The "stands" don't provide access for more than a couple of people at a time. Welcome to 2024, where ALL travellers have many many electrical devices. I've flown in and out of DLH several times. Its an ok airport in my opinion. I've flow over a few million miles and a few 1000s flights. A small airport, TSA Pre-check is always empty. If you have carry on only and your boarding pass you can arrive 15 mins before you board! The airport is a lot better than it used to be. The make over several years ago did a lot for the airport. So much more modern, clean, everything. In my mind it went from a 2 to a 4 when that happened. The only negative thing that every small airport deals with and it has impacted me before is that the smaller regional aircraft are more likely to get cancelled than larger ones going into cities like Minneapolis. read more

If I could give it zero stars I would. I downloaded the damn Yelp app just to say this - it was an absolutely awful experience. 5AM flight, a line 50 people deep and an hour through security - I'd call it a "snails pace" but I think that would be insulting to snails. I'd be amazed if they got one person through every 5 minutes- I was towards the front even, it took me an hour. For some godforsaken reason they refused to open the second security line despite having plenty of people available - who only did anything when "pre-check" came around. TSA folks had no interest in speeding things up, even when people came close to missing flights from the long lines. At every other functional airport those folks get priority sure, but don't cripple an entire airport to show them how special they are. They could easily just send them to the front. We're now facing a 15-minute delay because of the incompetence as they're waiting for "more passengers to clear security" - an hour should be plenty of time for an airport as small as this. In sum, it's absolutely godawful. Had been considering adding the 6AM flight to a regular list of ways to get to Chicago - no more. Avoid this place like the plague. I will never willingly fly here again, and I strongly suggest everyone else look elsewhere. read more

Yes, Duluth Airport is small but I have been in smaller and this one you don't even have to walk outside to board the plane, yay! I arrived an hour and 15 minutes before my 6:55AM flight and it was plenty of time to relax and drink my tea before going through security. I prefer that instead of sitting with everyone on the other side to relax and watch tv on any seat I want before security. There are 2 washrooms, downstairs and upstairs, and upstairs there's a tv with comfortable chairs. It's not a big airport but they have a few displays of local artists' work, statue, and information about women who served in the US military which I thought was great. The service was really fast from checking in and dropping off my luggage and going through security. For early morning, the cafe was open for people to get something to eat or drink. Because my flight was the last one of the early morning ones, there was plenty of seating post security. There's also 2 sets of washrooms too. Nice little airport and only wish I could fly out a little later as I had a long layover in Minneapolis after. read more

Flew out of the Duluth airport on a Sunday afternoon. The new airport is a really nice space and has a modern feel. Very small and easy to navigate and park. However, the TSA seems to have ALOT of time on their hands. Seven of our eight bags (there were four of us traveling) were pulled aside for extra screening. The TSA agent with short red hair was a bit rude when inspecting our bags. It's great that she is holding her inspection and the TSA guidelines to such high standards....but no need to scold us like we are school children. I know how to go to the store and buy quart sized bags, so no need to instruct us to that level of detail - thank you very much. If she hadn't have been so flustered and upset with us she would have realized all of my liquids (less than 3.4 oz) were in quart bags except for one item. My bad, honest mistake. I should also note that I am a member of TSA pre-check so program I'm pre-screened and obviously considered low risk. Anyways, nice job with the inspections but maybe try to focus on the delivery a bit. read more

Yes, it's a nice renovated airport but really, who cares? You're at the airport for at most an hour before boarding the plane. I'd rather have cheaper fares that go more places from an "old" airport than the high fares that this airport charges to subsidize its $80 million renovation. And I'm not sure what's with the "International" moniker since it only offers flights to Minneapolis and Chicago. But the worst thing is that you practically have to take out a second mortgage to be able to afford to fly out of here. Currently, roundtrip flights from Duluth to Chicago are $227 no matter what date you choose. But down in Minneapolis, roundtrip flights to Chicago are $71 for most dates and just barely above that for others (e.g. $99 near Christmas). Granted, Duluth is 50 straight-line miles farther away from Chicago compared to Minneapolis... but obviously, with most flights within the U.S. pricing at 10 cents per mile or lower, that should be a $10 difference round-trip, not a $156 difference. Oh and even more insulting... roundtrip flights from Duluth to Minneapolis are the bargain price of $209!!! That's 137 miles each way, or 76 cents per mile for the trip!!!!! I just bought a flight on United airlines from Minneapolis to Paris and back for $382 (during daytime, with a 1 hour layover in Toronto - not a redeye). That's 4.5 cents per mile. So going through Duluth to Minneapolis is 17 times -- SEVENTEEN -- more expensive. Ridiculous. Edit: Another more recent data point. I got a flight from Minneapolis to Frankfurt Germany for $390 roundtrip, which had a 1 hour layover in Chicago and was non-stop from there. On United Airlines, during the middle of the day. If I wanted to instead leave from Duluth, also on United Airlines, the price would have been $1,200. So that's pricing the extra leg from DLH-MSP at $3 PER MILE (yes, 3 DOLLARS) round trip compared to the MSP-FRA roundtrip which was $0.044 (4.4 cents) per mile. Security is easy, and everyone that works there is super friendly because A) it's Duluth and B) it's never crazy busy, so nobody ever gets the chance to get cranky and bitchy the way they do at bigger airports. My dad and his friend decided to fly to this airport (which we almost missed the connector from St Paul to) and then drive up to Canada to meet another friend. This place is really frickin small. Save your money and drive down to Minneapolis. The flight from Duluth was on a very small plane (2 seats, isle, 2 seats) and about 20 rows. I flew out of Duluth 2 weeks ago for the 6:26am flight and I was still able to board 15 min before. Today I was booked for that same flight, and they wouldn't let me board 29 min before because "30 min is the cutoff." If someone would've told me that 2 weeks ago that they were "doing me a favor," I would've been here earlier. I was told it just depends on who is working and that the counter person is also the gate person so "she must have decided to go to the gate earlier than she did 2 weeks ago." I wasn't the only person either. 4 other people had to re-book their flights. They were here on time (40 min early) but by the time they got to the counter they were "too late" since it took so long for the one employee to check-in the people before them. I take responsibility for not being here earlier, but I feel they change their own rules based on what is convenient for them. The flight was barely half full, so it's not like 100 people were checking in at once. I was able to re-book for a later flight, but because the airport is small I had to wait 5 hours for the next one. I could've driven to Minneapolis and saved time and money. read more

I guess when it comes to flying from Duluth, I'd rather not pay the extra cash, and just drive down to Minneapolis and fly out from there! This is one of the smallest airports in the United States! I think it either has like, 2 or 3 terminals, and nothing...I mean, nothing to do, what so ever! Bring a book or something to do when traveling to or out of Duluth. I've flown out of Duluth a couple times, when I went on a school trip to France, our whole French Class met up here and began out trip. That day brings back tons of memories! As for the seating on the plane, the planes are small, and they only fly to certain airports. It is a connecting airport in a sense. Mostly, I've always flown to Minneapolis from Duluth. Not the most pleasant flight in the world, but it works! You basically get up to height, then come right back down. I mean The cities are only like 4 hours away, so it is about a half our flight or so. Tons of parking, and baggage claim runs pretty smooth. At least I've never had much of an issue while I was here! read more

A clean, new terminal with locally-staffed personnel, which sometimes means friendly but inexperienced folks trying to handle the intricacies of airline travel and logistics. Do NOT expect any food that has to be prepared to be served in anything resembling a "timely" manner. It's best to allow an absolute minimum of 45-60 minutes for food service. Bar is friendly and has a good beer list for those inclined. Allow extra time in winter for departure and arrivals; Summer's run smoothly and efficiently. read more

Cute, tiny (I mean TIIIIIIIINY) airport. Unfortunately, there are no food sources here. There is public transit that goes from downtown Duluth to and from the airport, which is very convenient. There's also NEVER any TSA line.. so if you fly out at a specific time, you can bet you can arrive during boarding and you'll be on your flight ready to go in no time - another HUGE plus. It's a relaxed way to travel. Free WiFi, and no fighting over charging stations. I gave it a 3 because of the inconvenient flight times. My perfect, most ideal, flight time (the 4th flight option through United going to Chicago) is a Summer only option, apparently. This dampens my thoughts on this facility and that airline to be quite honest. Otherwise, I really enjoy this place. read more

International airport??? really? There are only 4 gates at DIA. When I arrived, I went to the United counter which was abandoned. I looked around for employees but there were none. I then saw some kiosks off to the side but no blatant signs pointing them out. I got my boarding pass which had no gate # on it and there were no monitors so when I was boarding I had to ask people in the security line if they were on the same flight and if I was in the correct line. The homely red-headed security lady was a real stickler for the rules and was scolding people to take out all their toiletries from their bag. She pretty much rearranged all of mine saying what does and doesn't need to be in plastic bags - and took some of my stuff out of them. I have some items bagged for organization. There were 3 people in front of me at the security line and it took 20 minutes to get through but I'm glad that such a major metropolis such as Duluth, MN is safe from toiletries. read more

There are 4 gates and Delta and United are the main airlines who fly through here. There is a little shop and bar. It's clean. The bathrooms are nice. The staff is friendly. My sons, ages 19 and 12, have been in Duluth visiting their grandmother this week. They went to Duluth International this morning (around 5 am) to catch a flight to Detroit/Atlanta and while going through the TSA Checkpoint, the officer checking identification insulted my son by saying "someone must not like you with that name". I am appalled by the behavior of the TSA agent that was displayed. My son filed a complaint and was told that he would be notified when action had taken place. No apologies were given and no assurance or acknowledgment that the officer was out of line. It is a shame that anyone should be subjected to an insult of this magnitude. We put our faith in TSA to make sure that our flights are safe. We comply with the guidelines without question. We should not be harassed. read more

I'm giving this airport 5 stars because I feel sorry for it due to all the people who have bashed it for the stupidest things. The airport should not get a bad rating due to a TSA incident or that the fact that it's a small airport. It's a beautiful cozy airport and does not need to be bigger. Your flying into a small waterfront city and not into NYC or Chicago. You idiots sound like typical spoiled travelers who don't appreciate anything. Security was on a power trip compared with larger airports. One guy yelled at me because i put my backpack in one of those grey trays instead of directly on the belt. gimme a break. The coffee shop inside was less than impressive. They should go with a starbucks or caribou. Also, once you walk in it is confusing where to go, needs better signage. I fly in and out of here a lot. it's nice and super small (no need to show up 2 hours early here!). I think I've had one person in front of me for security once.... so that process is quick. I do agree with other posters that the security people are not all that friendly and some are just downright crabs, but there are a few good ones. The parking here is pretty outrageous. The reason I give 4 stars... it's ridiculous how $$$ it is, like I'm parking in the cities. Not really anything to eat here, a few vending machines.... so bring your own food if you want it... and YES you can carry food in (I'm surprised how few people know this). I always stop and get my favorite sub, salad, burger etc... I've carried it all on. United put out free coffee at the gate for one of my flights so that was pretty cool. And in case you don't know... you're getting on a puddle jumper from this airport, so your roller-bag otherwise allowed as a carry-on will be taken and checked at the gate... so if you have $$$, jewelry, electronics etc that you don't want put below you need to put them into a smaller bag that you will be able to take on. read more

This is the smallest airport.Ever. The airport is two levels. The lower level is contains two ticket counters, one for United and one for Delta, the single baggage claim for the entire airport and the car rental counters. Do not expect fast service at the ticket counters or rental counters, it is not because the service isn't good, it's because the place is so small they have one person working each counter. The upper level contains the only 'establishment' in the airport, the last airburnner, i believe it was called. It opens at 11.30am and closes at 5pm. they serve drinks and pizza. That's it. If you get delayed until after 5, like I did, you better bring a book, IPad, IPod, lap top ect, because there is NOTHING available to you after 5pm. At each end of the airport is a single security check point. One checkpoint to go to gates 1 and 2 and another to go through 3 and 4. there literally is no 'terminal'. The security check points are shut down and locked off. About an hour prior to your flight TSA will reopen the check point, send you through and then you can sit in a small bank of chairs waiting to board either gates 1 or 2 or 3 and 4 depending on what check point you proceed through. The good thing, everyone that worked at the airport was extremely nice and helpful. While this is really your only choice to get to Northern MN , you can always fly to MSP and drive the 4 hours north. I wouldn't say it was worth it since Duluth isn't that bad. read more

If you're thinking about leaving your car here in the winter, don't. The parking isn't covered, and you have to roll your luggage through slush, salt, and ice. It's super difficult to get in and out of the airport, and once you get in, there's only one small and slow elevator. You won't want to haul your luggage up the steps. There are no amenities, except free wifi (the only reason I'm giving it two stars). The workers obviously multi-task because if you don't hit the 20-minute window that they are working the downstairs check-in, you can't check your luggage. My opinion is to fly in/out of MSP if you're able. Sure, it's a drive, but the time and gas are worth the $200 savings and no winter travel headache. read more

I was impressed with Duluth this morning, the airport was super clean, and the lines at checking and security moved so fast! I haven't had the opportunity to fly out of duluth for a while, and boy did I miss it. Yes, the price for the ticket is a little higher but it's so worth it because of the speed of everything as well as the connivence factor. read more

Hands down the smallest airport I have ever seen...quaint with occassional fighter craft taking off (Air National Guard).

I love this little tiny airport, it has so much charme. I would always prefer to fly in and out of there, than driving down to the cities for 4 hours. Okay, I am european and I am not used to long drives, maybe that's why. But still... The workers are nice, it has a bar and a coffee-shop and it's the only airport I know, that has free Wi-Fi. The only weird thing is, that there are no restrooms inside the security area at the gates, but they are building a whole new airport building, so I don't think this will be an issue then anymore. On the other hand it is kinda sad, that they get rid of the retro-part. A few more connections out of here would be nice, United goes to ORD twice a day and Delta to DTW. Delta does MSP 5 times a day, too. And Allegiant is flying into LAS and MCO like once a week or so. read more

Had problems here 2 years ago so I stopped flying into this airport. Gave it another try and NOTHING has changed. Faulty equipment, disorganized, and isn't proactive. Good luck flying out of here. They need to make some changes and be an actual airport. read more
