Duluth Trading Company really came through for me when other retailers let me down! Okay...so I needed a simple black turtleneck for a food & wine tasting. I drove to and went inside ALL of the following stores last Saturday. They all listed turtlenecks on their websites. Unfortunately, none of them differentiated which were "in-store" and which were "on-line only". I went to... -American Eagle Outfitters (Coon Rapids) -Carhartt (Coon Rapids) -Dick's Sporting Goods (Coon Rapids) -JC Penny's (Coon Rapids) -Kohls (Cook Rapids) -Men's Warehouse (Coon Rapids) -Mills Fleet Farm (Brooklyn Park) -Old Navy (Coon Rapids) -Target (Coon Rapids) -Walmart (Andover and Coon Rapids) I was REALLY pissed off!!! I went to 11 stores and NONE of them had a simple turtleneck in-stock. Not even stores like like Walmart, which listed nearly 20 different men's turtlenecks on-line. The next day I went to the Duluth Trading Company (Fridley) for the first time. Oh, how I wish they were my first stop! I was in heaven! They had 3 different kinds of turtlenecks - giant stacks of them - in many sizes and in many colors. They're huge and they have SO much cool stuff! I bought 3 styles of turtlenecks in 3 different colors. I came the next day and I bought 2 pairs of work pants for my daughter. About half of the store is for women. Half of the store for women? This beats the hell out of places like Carhartt and Fleet Farm and Red Wing Shoes that just have small, token women's sections. They're a little more expensive. It's worth every penny. The clothing is awesome, a huge selection of tough work wear under one roof. And the customer service is first rate. There are lots of other extra goodies like a lounge in the back (with free coffee & bottled water), an area with books, and cool accessories ranging from nasty looking machetes & knives to monkey butt powder. I also LOVE the extra-large changing rooms. Thanks, for a great experience, DTC! -Daddy Maxx Retro

My family loves this place, and it was my first time being there. For the last couple years I've seen their ads and thought if their clothing was as good as it looks - it is. I specifically like their underwear because of the comfort and there's no worry about a tag that could rub on your backside like other brands. You can find anything you want there from coffee mugs to dog supplies to clothing. There can be atleast 1 thing you'll like there. Their amenities are also amazing, just sad they didn't have any water in their cooler.

The Rack in Maple Grove is decent sized and well laid out. They tend to have a bit of a smaller selection of the higher end designers that you can find at the Mall of America Nordstrom rack but still a decent variety. They carry women's, men's, children's, shoes, accessories and home goods. Parking is plentiful but the traffic flow is a little tricky directing you right into the first row. That row gets 100% of incoming traffic so I'd recommend parking one or two over. Customer service here is always good. While you are kind of on your own to hunt the racks (if you want a personalized shopping experience head to the actual Nordstrom's) the employees always seem to be in a good mood and helpful when checking out. Dressing rooms are always clean and they have plenty of spaces to try on items. It helps when people return unwanted items to the return racks so do your part and don't leave them in the room. Overall I think visiting this location is fun and I rarely leave empty handed!

Um...WHOA?! I've…read moreheard about this store from friends before, but thought it was just a fancy menswear store. Well boy, was I wrong. I stopped in a few days before Christmas, and I actually had a few things yet I wanted to get my grandpa, so this worked out great. At the entrance - and throughout the store - I found free hot coffee, tea, refreshments, cookies, and treats. Maybe it's just a holiday thing but I loved the hospitality. The space is HUGE - so much more than clothes! I had no idea. They have: - books and coffee table books - a whole room dedicated to perfume/cologne and scents - a whole area for cocktail-related gifts - home decor, tableware, and interior decor items - kitschy smaller giftables that were organized by theme (work/office, hosting, etc.) - menswear and womenswear - jewelry - candles - and so much more! I genuinely believe you can walk in here and be sure to find something for anyone on your gifting list. The service was incredible: lots of welcomes and greetings, and staff there to help you if you need it. Oh, they even have a room you can reserve while shopping?! FANCY!

However, a close friend is diving in for his third, and I applaud his happiness. I won't wear a tuxedo, but I needed to have a suit made that would make the bride and the 400 attendees comfortable. The bride already told me not to don a fedora or pink sneakers, although I wanted to. Todd Fliginger at Martin Patrick took me under his wing. Todd is amazingly kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. He sent swatches to Milwaukee before we moved to Minneapolis. Tailors were brought in, especially the master tailor Robert, not only to measure, but also to have me try on different designers' pieces to see what would fit well. I am a difficult fit, with a body more like a penguin than a human. That's what a custom tailor in NYC told me. However, I don't nosh on Krill. Todd and Robert took hours to get a correct fit and guaranteed that I would look good. Todd even saved me several hundred dollars off the original quote. ADDENDUM: My suit arrived, and it looked amazing. A few alterations are required to ensure a perfect fit, but that's it. I had a suit made on Savile Row in London that cost more than three times this suit's price, and it did not fit as well. This store should be on every list of Minneapolis's sightseeing highlights. It is akin to a design museum. Everything at Martin Patrick--furniture and furnishings--is for sale, and they're all amazing! Martin Patrick 3 is down-to-earth sophistication, with a NYC or Parisian vibe. Yet, the staff is Midwest empathetic. It is a Minneapolis treasure, as is Todd. I might not be looking forward to this wedding, but at least I know I will look my best.

But now "Things Done Changed." (Biggie reference.) Within the last couple years, a handful of new spots have opened up in Minneapolis alone! Phenom is refreshing with its dope two room setup, wooden floors, and tees that hang from an automated and revolving rack above. (Like what drycleaners have.) They also carry a small selection of sneaker classics like Nike Air Maxes, Jordans, and New Balances (the non-Grandpa kind), some interesting caps (both snapback and fitted), and original sweatshirts I've never really seen online. I'm not really a fan of their selection, but I can see how some peeps dig it. Aside from the gear, the customer service could be better. I saw one Nike Air Max and got a staff member to get it in my size. I found that it didn't fit and tried chatting with him a bit. He seemed disinterested in trying to sell me anything and left to talk to the shorty at the front of the store. At other boutiques, the staff usually tries to hustle me. Kinda surprised. Again, I love Phenom's dope space and can appreciate their gear, but the customer service could be better.
