Once you sit down, you have to scan for the menu, & place your own order. The place is dirty. We sat by a window & the window was filthy & the frame of the window had dead flies on it. The service consisted of them bringing your food & coming to your table when you are ready to pay. Water was never refilled & you needed it after all the saltiness of the food. The three biggest aspect of dumplings is are they seasoned to be tasty, are they filling and how was the service. The service was ok, the serving size was filling but I guess their cook is allergic to salt, garlic or whenever seasoning they put in their dumplings. I had to soak them in a soy bath with hot sauce to give them flavor. Again very filling and portion size was a tad larger than I was used to but it was tasteless. Maybe I got a bad batch from a cook who forgot to add seasoning. Dumplings yes please! Now we were looking for a steak dinner but after finding Dumpling 85 screw the steak we hit up the dumplings and we scored. The got pork xiao long bao, spicy wanton, potstickers, edamame, and beef brisket noodle soup. I loved that they served the soup in a big bowl with smaller bowls to share around the table which is exactly what we had planned. The brooth was so luxurious and smooth packed with flavors the noodles had the perfect bite and everything just worked so well with the tender beef brisket. The XLB broth inside was loaded with ginger and was a flavor bomb explosion in your mouth. There's a small parking lot in the back but u have to pay, I didn't see the pricing as the parking lot was full anyway, I don't know if this resto validates. We had ordered the pork xlb, spicy beef noodle soup. I asked for extra noodles for my son but I actually should I have waited as the serving size was huge. I could have split it with him. I ended up having left overs. The xlb didn't really look plump filled with soup. But the kids finished it, so just have been good. I also got the pork buns as I saw it was a favorite. Came here with friends on a Friday to grab some appetizers. We picked a table and ordered through their QR code. Their options were decent. There was a little of a wait to get our food. We ordered two different kind of dim sums - Chicken and vegetables - Vegetables The portions were good for three people, but there was very little flavor to the actual food. Kind of pricey I'd say, and like Bay Area pricing, however for the price the portions were pretty big. We came in hungry and still had a little bit left over. The pan fried pork bun was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, a little bit much on the bun portion to meat ratio. The beef brisket noodle soup was the Star of the show for us! Mildly spicy, noodles were bouncy chewy and soft, all the flavors mixed well together especially when adding the vinegar into it! You must add the vinegar, it makes it so much better! I loved the cute shopping area this restaurant is located around. We were craving Asian food and were happy to stumble upon this spot. When we walked in around 3 p.m., there was no wait and a male server seated us right away. There's a QR code on the table for ordering. The issue was that no one explained that we had to order it through the phone. We thought it was just to look at the menu. We ended up sitting there for about 15 minutes before I finally asked whether we should order through him or our phones, and he told us it was phone only. That was pretty frustrating, as it would've been nice to know upfront instead of feeling ignored. As for the food, it was honestly very good. We started with the fresh cucumber salad, which was super refreshing and a great way to begin the meal. The pork xiao long bao were simple but really well done. The beef noodle soup was rich and flavorful, though I do wish it came with more noodles. We also ordered the zha jiang noodles, which were really, really good and packed with flavor, and the wonton noodle soup, which was simple but comforting and delicious. Food wise, I'd easily give this place four stars. Unfortunately, the customer service brought the experience down. After the food was dropped off, there was no check in at all. Since we ordered through our phones, we assumed we could also pay that way, but the app told us to pay with the cashier so we had to flag the server down again. Overall, I'd still recommend coming here to try the food, just don't expect attentive or quick service. That's why I'm giving this place three stars overall. read more

Some people just walk in and grab the next available table, which creates frustration for everyone else. The staff doesn't seem concerned that there's no management or host at the front to control the flow of guests. All food is ordered through a QR code, but you're not allowed to self-pay or check out, which makes their system feel even more confusing. This past weekend had the chance to come out to SLT and give Dumpling 85 a visit. We had seen many video reviews hyping the spot up so we were really excited for try it. Unfortunately it wasn't really much to our liking and here's why. Right when we walk in, all the staff seem to be pretty busy so the seating arrangements were kind of confusing. A worker popped up and just pointed us to a table after waiting for a couple minutes. The menu is all online so you do have to scan a barcode and pull up the menu. The service was also kind of meh, as no one really came in to check on us until we asked for more water... The restaurant is pretty small and it will probably get busy faster with the temperatures dropping soon. The food we ordered was just alright; the chow mein noodles we ordered barely had any chicken and they honestly felt kind of room temp. We didn't want to make a fuss about it because it did take a while for them to even come out so we just didn't end up finishing them. Honestly, every single thing was incredibly authentic and delicious. It's a massive pleasant surprise to find such high-quality Northern Chinese food up here in South Lake Tahoe. It's difficult to give an unbiased review on a dumpling house when I've been a resident of Los Angeles for over 10 yrs. And as Los Angelenos know, San Gabriel Valley is the place for THE BEST dimsum/Chinese. But I always like to give places the benefit of the doubt and sometimes it can be a pleasant surprise. One positive: I did think their fried rice was decent. We got both chicken and shrimp fried rice and to me, what makes a great fried rice,is that smoky flavor you get from the heat of the wok. The rice did have that flavor. As for the dumplings, we only ordered the shrimp pork chive. Taste is subjective, but I wasn't a fan of the flavor. The filling was kind of sweet which I didn't care for and I was missing that shrimpy porky flavor I'm used to at a traditional dimsum house. I guess for those who don't know great dimsum, wouldn't know the difference. But for those that do, I don't recommend it. BTW, it's extremely pricey, but I get it. My experience here was average. We ordered hot tea, shrimp fried rice, and wonton soup. The best part of the meal were the wontons in the soup; the filling was seasoned well and the wontons were cooked perfectly. The restaurant was very busy and has more of a "fast food" vibe. The staff does seat you, however, all ordering is done via scanning a QR code and placing your own order. To close your tab you pay with the staff, as the "ordering app" does not allow for payment. Came here for a dinner while staying in SLT. I will say the vibe here is kinda awful. There is no music playing and it was awkwardly silent even with like 6 or 7 other parties eating at the same time. The actual food is good, we got the XLB, string beans, and the chicken chow main. Standouts were the XLB and chow mein, both were so flavorful and on par with what you'd get in SF. The string beans were not great, I found them not cooked enough and lacking in any sort of seasoning. There were a handful that were too crunch to eat. I will also say the chow mein was definitely on the greasy side, so avoid that if you're wanting a more light meal. Overall a solid option if you're really wanting dim sum in SLT. I do home the owners lighten up the vibe with some music. Also the lack of dipping bowls for soy sauce and soup spoons for the XLB was rough, and we were already done eating by the time we could ask a waiter for them. read more

We were hesitant on stopping in only because you have to question how authentic the Chinese food in Lake Tahoe, especially dumplings, when Tahoe isn't known to have solid Chinese food places. Well, I'm glad we stopped in! We ordered two XLB dishes as we had that craving. Service was fast. I'll say it's pretty darn close to what we are used to having down in the Bay Area! The taste was really good and it was served piping hot. A couple things: need the soy sauce/vinegar mix already mixed. Not all tables had the separate bottles to make the dipping sauce. Dumpling 85 in South Lake Tahoe is a tasty little find! It was located across the street from where we were staying at the Marriott's Timber Lodge which made it super convenient. It is also across from The Baked Bear...so, if you want dessert after, it's a super close walk. We ordered the Shrimp pork chive dumplings, Xiao long bao, and the pan fried pork buns. The dumpling fillings were fresh and flavorful, with just the right balance of seasoning. The real standout was the pan fried pork buns -- perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy and savory on the inside. You can even watch the staff making dumplings fresh. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the service was friendly and attentive, making the meal even better. We wanted to come here a second time during our trip, but unfortunately ran out of time. Seeing this spot pop up on Yelp, I got immediately excited. I love dumplings and so do my kids so after an adventure field day in the area, we had to place an order here and have some comforting food delivered to the front door. Everything arrived, hot and ready to eat, and then somehow also manage to keep things from sticking together too. Unfortunately, the dumplings were just average for me. They were delicately steamed with a tender skin, but the fillings all tasted almost identical, the spicy chili sauce was quite bland and they did not come with any type of dumpling sauce either. The pan fried buns were mostly dough with a small little filling in the middle that was juicy as you expect, but not an excellent version in my opinion. I've been to China and to both Beijing and Shanghai, and these were the best dumplings I've had since. There's no assigned seating, you just come in and sit where you want and order from the digital menu with your phone and your food is prepared and brought out quickly to order. We just settled in our room and got a little hungry. Took a walk outside and saw dumplings and noodles. I couldn't wait to taste the dumplings. I came last year and this was not around so I think it's a brand new spot. Upon walking in, it was a small cozy spot. The server said we can sit anywhere. We ordered through the online menu and received our beef noodle soup in about five minutes. To my surprise, the broth was warm and not hot as I would like it. My mom thought that the broth was great I thought otherwise the beef brisket was nice and tender. It was enough to feed me and my mother. We also ordered shrimp and vegetable dumpling, which took a little bit longer. There were not as tasty as I thought I felt like I was eating something from the freezer that you can buy from the store for 12 of these dumplings. It was about $15. The beef brisket noodles was about $19 a bowl we also got hot tea that was a dollar each cup and we also ordered some white rice to go since we had some dumplings left over the white rice was about five dollars a little container. They did not have much of a selection when it came to the noodles or the dumplings.
