    Sashimi Combo without rice
    Benjamin G.

tldr; Good service and excellent food. Parking plaza was decent. I arrived at about 8pm on a Saturday night, driving over from Stateline, NV. I wanted to try out a different Sushi place in Tahoe, and this place looked promising. The restaurant is first in a small shopping plaza, with a decent amount of parking present. i was able to find a spot, but I do think during peak hours parking might be somewhat of a problem. I was seated reasonably quickly at the Sushi bar, and a waiter came by reasonably quickly to attend to me. Otherwise, there was a decent amount of table seating available as well, but I don't think there were more than 5-6 tables. The waiter recommended the Shrimp Dynamite ($16) as a starter, which I took up along with the Sashimi Combo ($40) - but without the rice. Shrimp Dynamite - 5/5: This was excellent! They were perfectly breaded with a thin layer, with a delicious crunchy skin and some light spices. The prawns were fresh, and I had no trouble finishing this appetizer. Sashimi Combo - 5/5: Also excellent! Everything is fresh as you'd expect from sashimi, but I also appreciated the focus on the sashimi over the usual extras like shredded tapioca (which I like, but is mostly optional garnishing. I left really satisfied, and definitely looking forward to another visit in the future!

This place is always a Lake Tahoe go-to. Their ingredients and flavor profiles are "off the hook"! The service is always excellent and they never leave you wanting for anything. The servers divide and conquer and stop by often; even when the restaurant is super busy to check on you. On a side note, we have family from coastal California in several areas that all claim they can't get sushi this good back home; and when in Tahoe, it's a must stop! From my experience and many travel days per year spent eating out, I can agree, they're absolutely correct! The place is not tiny but not huge either. This restaurant offers a very comfortable and nicely lit dining area; the room acoustics are decent too making it easy to communicate with friends & family. We regularly drive 45 minutes one way to eat here. I highly recommend this place if you find yourself near South Tahoe!

My first time here, my brother suggested a happy hour dinner I'll cut to the chase, WoW, everything was really delicious, service was outstanding. Here is what we enjoyed tonight, the starters were great Shrimp was dynamite, Gyozas with pork, Edamame, bbq Kalbi thin sliced short ribs Rolls, Slammin' Salmon, Crunchy Granola, the Joker, Caterpillar. Our Value for the money was high in my opinion. There are Sushi places throughout town this has been my favorite. Thank you, Foodguy-martin

The doors opened at 4:30 and by 5:10 there was already a wait! We sampled a bit of everything off the happy hour menu (served from 4:30 - 6:00) and also enjoyed items from the regular menu as well. Our server was attentive and each bite as delicious as we remembered. This place is a must try while in South Lake Tahoe.

Server was very nice especially for how busy she was. Nice saki list in very helpful description. Good came out rocket fast. Problem was this sushi is not made to order. It's easily made 2-3 hours before and just played when ordered. You can taste the dryness of the sushi like it's been sitting for a while. Maybe next time skip the sushi and try something else

Instantly walking in there was a decent size group. It looked busy from the outside but very spacious insides there was an outdoor patio option and a sushi bar as well. We were seated within 5 min of walking in with a small The menu had a lot of great options from noodle dishes to veggie rolls. We got the slammin' salmon, fire in the sky, rainbow , and the super star. All of which were good but nothing to write home about. The servers were friendly and very welcoming. And service was fast and efficient.

Great service and the food was tasty! Our waiter Patience was wonderful, even on a busy night.

There was a bit of a wait (30 minutes) for a table for 7 of us - we didn't mind terribly waiting, but it would have been nicer if the Yelp waitlist function had worked properly. But we finally were seated at a table outside. We'd already looked at the menu and had a good idea of what we wanted to order. Everyone was very pleased with what they ordered. I was happy that there were a couple of veggie rolls that had tofu in them, and one that was vegan without the sauce and was probably one of the best "sushi" rolls I've ever eaten in my life. It was called the Earthworm (contains organic baked tofu, basil, garlic, cucumber & broccoli topped with avocado, macadamia nuts and dynamite sauce) and the combination of the basil and garlic was AMAZING. The Bhodi (organic baked tofu, spinach, garlic and shiitake mushroom) was also very good. Service was excellent and very helpful. They took our order efficiently but we didn't feel rushed, and it wasn't a terribly long wait to get the food. Everything looked gorgeous and the consensus seemed to be that everything was delicious. They were unfortunately out of the lava cake that several people in our group wanted to split, but they got to split the tempura cheesecake, and they really enjoyed that as well. We will likely come back next year when we're back for our yearly vacation!

Ask the Community - Off The Hook Sushi

Do you do all you can eat?

We don't, no. Just happy hour 4:30-6 Monday Thursday and Friday.

Do you have any rice less sushi rolls?

You can request “light rice” but we don’t have rolls that come standard that way.

    Does happy hour still exist?

Yes! Weekdays from 4:30 to 6. We’re currently dark Tuesdays and Wednesdays… so for now just Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays for happy hour!

Are the Miso soup and the vegetable udon vegetarian? Or do they have fish sauce or broth in them?

Both bases do contain bonito fish flakes for flavor.

Do they have gluten free options?

Yes they do! I think it is an ok menu

Would you be able to accommodate a party of 20?

    They sure can!

Do you still have The Hamachi Kama on the menu?

It’s usually on the specials board nightly, but can sell out since there’s only one collar per fish! You’re welcome to call and check before you come in!

It was my first time there, and my server Jamie was really friendly and helpful. He walked me through the menu, and I ended up going with à la carte so I could try a few things. The wagyu was delicious and cooked perfectly, and the cauliflower was amazing too. The Toyosu fish was really refreshing. I also thought it was really cool that they source fish from Japan every couple of days. That definitely shows the level of quality they're going for. I'll definitely be back, and next time I want to try the full course. The restaurant itself is beautiful overall. Only small thing for me was that it got a little smoky at times, and the wine tasted slightly old, although my server confirmed the bottle had been opened recently. It honestly may have just been the wine I chose. Still a great experience overall.

We spent around $700 for two people and it was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've had -- not just in Tahoe, but anywhere near this price point. The food was wildly inconsistent. Several dishes were overly salty to the point where it completely overpowered everything else. Others were just forgettable (like the beet salad). For a tasting menu that's supposed to be carefully curated, it felt sloppy and poorly thought out. On top of that, the portions were tiny -- even by fine dining standards -- and we left still hungry, which is pretty unacceptable given what we paid. For example the fish was probably a 3-4 oz portion. Many of the dishes were the same size as the a la carte menu, but for the tasting were meant to be shared for 2 adults. That means you are paying 400 dollars for dishes that can be bought for 40 bucks on the menu. The exact same size.... What is going on.... Service was just as frustrating. It wasn't outright rude, but it was disorganized and careless in ways that really matter. We ordered an extra dish and no one bothered to tell us it was already included in the tasting menu -- so we ended up paying extra for something redundant. That's a basic failure and honestly felt borderline deceptive. Drink service was slow, and mis-timed. What really pushed it over the edge: my wife is pregnant, and instead of putting any real thought into substituting a raw fish/uni course, they gave her a duplicate of another dish already being served, and was a dish that we extra ordered. No creativity, no effort -- just the easiest possible workaround. For a restaurant trying to position itself as high-end, that's inexcusable. This place charges like a top-tier dining experience but delivers something far below that level. It feels like they're relying on hype and location rather than execution. Save your money. There are far better places in Tahoe (and beyond) that actually justify the price. Would not return.

The management changes of past years has brought back pros who have lived and immersed in Japan and Korea, and bring a sparkling authenticity to a place that had sometimes lost its way past decade. Weekend nights can be well jammed with ethnic Asian tourist ski families and globally experienced friends that know the real thing. Fresh gorgeous sushi, (and some great teriyaki chicken and beef for those who aren't into fish). Cold Japanese beers... cucumber salad, Bibimbap, tempura... just awesome. Unlike most places in this region, the parking is free and expansive amidst the mini mall in a forest.

Service was friendly and adequate, hence my giving 2 I am Asian who has lived over 50 years in Hawaii and have eaten authentic Asian cuisine from around the Pacific and Asia so I'm qualified to make this statement! LONG Version: In heavily populated Asian communities,if we see a particular race eating at that races' restaurant, it's generally a signal that the food there is gonna be good! Makes sense, right? While visiting Tahoe today my family had a craving for sushi and based on the rating for Harumi Sushi (as of 6/26' is is 3.9 Stars) we decided to go for dinner. Walking in, we were met with friendly staff and Japanese chefs behind the sushi counter! (Good sign!) their menu is mostly Japanese with some Korean dishes. I was also pleasantly surprised that there were a lot of Asian families also seated but I wasn't sure if that was a good gauge as I suspected that these families were all probably like ours-visiting from outside of the area. I crossed my fingers. We ordered various sushi rolls, a Tonkotsu Ramen, Tempura Udon, Pork Tonkatsu, and a Dotsolbop. Kitchen help must've been short staffed because each dish came out singly with minutes in between the next single dish and by the time the last dish came out, the first few people had already been long finished. First: Tonkotsu Ramen soup broth was completely tasteless. I have packaged Tonkotsu Ramen from my Asian store in Vegas that has much more flavor and body that the one I had. The noodles were simply noodles, the egg was not ajitama. It was simply a half boiled egg. The rest of the dish was not appealing nor tasty at all. Even the charsiu tasted old if not just pan fried for presentation! I could not finish it. The Tempura with the udon was adequate for an AYCE Japanese style buffet so, 'mid' as my kids would say. The udon, I was told wasn't bad, I guess I should've order the Shoyu Ramen instead. The Tonkatsu also fared better in taste rating than my ramen. The Dot Sol Bop came after everyone was finished eating. It had chopped lettuce on it among a couple other non traditional looking veggies. There was very little meat in it. After adding the kochujang sauce and tasting, it was the strangest version of this dish I have ever tasted. The vinegar flavor coming from each bite was so overwhelming. We didn't know if it came from the rice mixture or from the kochujang sauce. Not even half of this dish was eaten. And this was with half the group sampling it. No one wanted to finish this dish. The sushi rolls looked like they were a little on the old side however all said the sushi was pretty good. Not amazing, but adequate. Mid range quality ingredients. My conclusion is that the quality of the ingredients is in need of some improvements. The sushi chefs are getting the job done with what they have. The cooked dishes, however, need to be reexamined If you truly know what Asian cuisine is because you've grown up with it and/or have experienced it, you will walk away disappointed especially if you order a non-sushi entree. The staff were nice though!
