Super excited for the soft opening. But they are NOT ready. I ordered takeout at the restaurant on the fifth day of their soft open... Most of my order arrived 40 mins after ordering (I was told 20 mins). Unfortunately the rest of my order (soup noodles) took one hour. So the rest of my food was cold by the time we ate it. Super disappointing. The kitchen was in chaos. The food was good for Encinitas, but nowhere near the quality of Din Tai Fung. The dumpling XLB skin was too thick, the fried pork chop could have benefited from a bit more flavor, and the beef noodle soup was good. Service was very nice (though overwhelmed). I'll come back but need to give it a few weeks. I really hope they can turn it around because Encinitas needs a good Chinese restaurant! read more

Just tried this place on Tuesday. The staff are all great, and the XLB, beef dumplings, and pork chop noodles were delicious. The place is cute and simple inside. But unfortunately the shrimp/pork/chicken shumai we were served were completely raw and I only discovered this after biting into one and realizing it was cold. All 3 pieces were still slightly frozen inside and fully uncooked. The staff was very apologetic, removed the item from our bill and discounted us. I had ordered a chicken wonton dish to go and that was removed as well because I didn't want to risk that also being raw. They handled it well and the other dishes were great, but disappointed because now I don't know if I can bring myself to try another dumpling here! :( read more

I really enjoyed the food at this place. I have to say that it taste like I'm in China right not. Very authentic Chinese dishes. Overall I like the Pan fried pork xlb the most. It's full of soup and taste not dry even it is pan fried. Also the soy noodle salads taste good with big portion. Can't help but compare this place to Din Tai Fung. Yes it's cheaper than DTF but so is also the taste. We had cucumber salad which was too vinegary. And the green beans that were too cold! The dumplings could have more soup inside as well as the dough was too thick. I'd come again tho. It's not bad. read more

Dumpling bar is now simultaneously the closest and farthest thing from Din Tai Fung we have in north county. We had dinner during their soft opening night and it appeared to me that this a family owned business launching their first ever restaurant with MANY details they still need to figure out, an extremely stark contrast from the well-oiled international dumpling machine that is Din Tai Fung. The wait staff was completely lost, they had zero familiarity with the menu, ordering systems, inventories, assignments etc. The table next to us didn't have their order put in and left after an hour. To be honest, it seemed like no one in there had worked at all restaurant before. The saving grace is that the food was good and seemed authentic (I'm pretty sure the owners mom and dad are at the front of the kitchen rolling up the dumplings). They're going to need quite a bit of time or help from someone with restaurant experience to figure everything out, but I give 5 stars because for me it's a welcome addition into the neighborhood. read more

We had come by this place once before and there was a line out of the door so we waited until a calmer mid-week night. Our experience was positive. The menu feels "complete" but is simple and not overwhelming. Having tried several dishes including a steamed dumpling, soup dumpling, beef soup, salad, etc. all of it was tasty. I felt like the soup was a little expensive for what it was given that the meat had a lot of fat on it; might have been better off with the egg drop or hot and sour soup which was 1/2 the price. Wait-staff was attentive and helpful albeit a bit too quiet. Atmosphere was small and intimate. Not romantic but rather utilitarian while being clean, contemporary and well-appointed. I particularly liked the variations in dishes, spoons and such that accomodated the various cuisine -- that is, it's a dumpling place and we got dumpling-specific accoutrements to eat with! :) Would return and try more dumplings including the pan-fried, and maybe the yummy dessert we saw as well. read more

From the spicy noodle beef plate, to the vegan dumplings and the pork xlb, to the bbq pork bun, we enjoyed everything. We will be going back for dinner very soon. My first time here, and I was so impressed. EVERYTHING was delicious, freshly prepared and tasty. Wood Ear mushroom in a spicy dressing was perfect texture and surprisingly, but not overwhelmingly, hot. The chicken wontons with chili sauce was also amazing. I was glad I had the cooling loveliness of the vegan dumplings along with it to calm the spiciness. I loved the lo mai gai. Yellow custard filled dessert buns were perfectly fluffy and surprisingly delicious. I will be back. I love that everything is prepared in-house, and that we finally have an authentic Chinese dumpling restaurant in coastal north county. It's an unpretentious restaurant with five star food. The food was good, not great. Sticky rice was lacking in flavor and it says 2 pcs on the menu but only 1 arrived in the streamer. When I pointed this out to the waitress she said, inside the wrapping is 2. I unwrapped it and showed her that it was just 1. She then went back and brought me another one. The cucumber appetizer was fine as well, but again a bit lacking in flavors. The shrimp and pork dim sum were good. I only gave it 3 stars due to the prices. You don't get much. I'm pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food (dumplings and noodles) at Dumpling Bar. While it is a little pricey the quality is very good. The XLB and other dumplings are thin and delicate while the noodles are the perfect consistency and tasty. The fried pork (pork katsu) is also moist and delicious. The menu is limited but everything we ate was good. A little pricey for the dumplings but given that it's Encinitas and I'm sure their rent is horrendous I get it. Easier than driving all the way to Kearny Mesa and definitely the best option around. I'll be back for sure! read more
