But then, I'm not there to be sold anything other than meat, so I don't need anything fancy. The selection was good, they had pork, beef, chicken, and even some soy sausage. I loaded up on ground beef, huge chicken breasts, boneless pork chops and thick-cut bacon, all for $14. Much less expensive than the grocery store! Plus I'm supporting a local business. I didn't really ask where they source thier meat from, so I'm not sure if it's free-range chicken or anything. I'll look into that next time. The price will definitely keep me coming back. I've known the owners, Matt & Shell, for many years and have watched as Shell has grown in her…read moreattempt to provide good, healthy foods her family. The homestead started with a few chickens and it has exploded into an enviable way of life many of us could only wish for. After the chicks she bought a freeze dryer that runs 24/7 - she cans many of her own foods - she's making her own soap, among other things. Her most recent endeavor has been perfecting sour dough bread and today I was the lucky recipient of a lovely, crusty boule. Through recent events, such as medical, deaths and life in general I had stopped making sour dough so I contacted Shell to get a new starter. She very kindly gifted me the starter and a loaf. The starter had a nice hooch on top and a reminiscent scent that I couldn't wait to stir it in and feed it, then left it on the counter. Then I turned to the bread. It had a slight heft to it and I was afraid it might be a bit dense. My husband sliced the loaf in half and spread out the open centers for a photo. The halves pressed together easily and there was a nice crumb texture. I would have preferred more air pockets running through, however, the taste was not affected. It was moist with a chewy crust. We are half the loaf with some olive oil. As someone who used to make breads every single dough day I know that it takes a little time to get a feel for when it's right and that that feeling can change from day to day depending on the weather. And each particular type of bread is different from another. I applaud Shell for her efforts. She is well on her way to becoming a sour dough whirlwind in the area. Watch for her roadside stand as the weather warms up and treat yourself to some farm fresh eggs and other goodies.

As I perused the small but mighty aisles of the shop it became very clear to me that I know very little about African cuisine. And I'm so glad they've opened so close to me so I can visit and learn along the way. When I stepped inside I first noticed the freezer coolers to my right. They carried a variety of meats and seafood--whole fish, cut pieces, filets and more of grouper, goat, lamb, beef, poultry, snapper, crab and more. as well as frozen veggies like okra and . Not a ton of prepared foods but loads to help you make fresh meals at home. They also have a butcher counter in the back. I didn't interact with that a lot but while I was there I did see a customer get a large piece of some sort of beef cut sectioned off into smaller pieces. They also have a small selection of produce and a cooler of beverages in flavors like banana, tamarind, etc. The majority of their imported selection comes in the form of their shelves of dry goods which include a variety of grains, both in smaller portions and bulk. Rice, beans, corn flour, cassava flour, yam flour, Gari, and more fill one entire shelf. I made note of all of them and immediately looked them up when I got home to learn more. They also have pantry staples like peanut butter, spices like pepper, whole nutmeg, suya seasoning, bay leaves, mango seeds, kuka (baobab tree leaves), plus snacks like plantain chips, kola nuts, kuli kuli, etc. Big jugs of cooking oils and a fairly large selection of powdered milks, ovaltine, cream of wheat, and ground corn mixes. They also had several varieties of chalk, clay, and limestone which I was also not familiar with in an edible context but it's apparently popular amongst pregnant women for managing nausea and digestive issues. I learned so much just checking out their shelves! Of course, Africa is a huge continent with differences between the cuisines found in different countries and regions so I can't speak to if they specialize in one region more than another but it seems like they have, at the very least, many staples that can be found in homes from North to South, East to West. And if you're just learning about it all this is a great starting point.

We hunted far and wide for an affordable summer CSA this year and happily discovered Tantre Farms…read more We ended up choosing Tantre for their variety of fruits and vegetables. They also include U-pick options as part of their CSA, however, we live an hour away and we're only able to visit once for a U-Pick. The produce selection is wide and each week, we had lots of different vegetables, including root veggies, lettuces, and cruciferous veg. We picked ours up from a local store in Plymouth made possible thanks to an awesome volunteer. The vegetables were some of the most delicious I've ever had, very fresh, maybe wonky shaped, but so delicious and without pesticides. Tantre Farms also offers an Immune Booster CSA which is curated weekly and features items from other local farms and businesses, an extended fall CSA, and a Thanksgiving CSA.
