When we first walked in, we were definitely a little confused. There's a small bar area right at the entrance, so at first we thought that was the entire seating area. But if you keep walking, it opens up into another section with booths. It honestly looks like an employees-only area at first, so we weren't sure if we were supposed to go back there There's also a side entrance that leads directly into that dining area, which makes a lot more sense once you figure out the layout. The place looks a little worn down, but honestly, it adds to the charm and gives it that classic local spot feel. I ordered the burger, onion rings, and cheddar jalapeño poppers, and everything was really good. Bonus points for serving Pepsi products! Always a win for me! The guy working was also incredibly friendly and was somehow managing both cooking and serving. He immediately noticed how confused we looked walking in and kindly pointed us toward the seating area in the back. Great food and genuinely welcoming service. I just had lunch there a couple of days ago. The place hasn't changed in the last 40 years or so. If I had never been there before and walked through what my buddy and I call the chute, I probably would have walked out the back door. I had the quarter pounder with cheese, an order of onion rings, and in order of mushrooms. Service was fast and polite. The burger was good, as always. Onion rings are great and the mushrooms. This place is my absolute favorite spot to go to when I am in Michigan! It's a hidden gem and my favorite memories as a kid. They have the best burger and BBQ pulled pork sandwiches! Roy's Barbeque, is the epitome of the All-American "greasy spoon." While this might be unappealing to many people, the food here is actually very good. I have eaten here several times and have never had a bad meal, and at the same time I can honestly say that I have never been sick from the food they serve here. This is a big plus in my book. I really love Roy's pulled-pork sandwich, as its one of the best I have had north of the Ohio River. The only place I have found that makes a better pork sandwich is located several hundred kilometers away in Arkansas. Likewise, I love the BBQ sauce they use. If I am not mistaken its homemade and absolutely fantastic. If you're tired of run of the mill burgers from Burger King and McDonalds, then its time for you to move up the ladder at Roy's. The burgers at this place are not only large and delicious, but moist to the point wearing a raincoat is a must. Moreover, they cook it the way you want it, not how they think you should have it prepared. First word that comes to mind...interesting...Second word: Dive! We sat at the counter in front of the grill to get the full ambiance of the place. There is another room in "the back", but we wanted to be where the action is! 3 of us got the the 1/2 pound "Big One" with Cheese. The name aptly described the size (I can only imagine what the 1 pound Bubba Burger is like). The burger is automatically topped with onion, tomato, lettuce, and mayo (I could have done without the mayo, but didn't know to ask for it without). The cooking method is unique and results in a very good tasting burger with good texture (not too much overworking of the beef here!). Personally, the only downside was that it didn't come "to order" Everything was pretty much well done. This too could have been my fault, but we were never asked how we wanted anything cooked or topped. Several of us had the Big One, and the consensus was a big thumbs up! Another in our group got the quarter pounder (way too small for me!). 2 others had the cheese steak Hoagie. one with onions & peppers, the other with unions, peppers, and mushrooms. They looked extremely good, and the sirloin looked so fresh I could have eaten it raw. As it was, both reported that the monstrous sandwiches were top grade! Side include a mix of zucchini fries, fried mushrooms, fries, and chili cheese fries. All were pretty standard "throw the frozen side in the fryer and serve it up" types of dishes. There was certainly no lack of grease to be found. The chili cheese fries I had were maybe a 1.5 star, certainly nothing to write home about.
