There's a now shuttered restaurant where my Sister had her rehearsal dinner and I sometimes passed Ames Surplus, which as it turns out has been folded into the 2-building complex that is called Jax Outdoor gear. The military surplus part of this store is not much more than a couple short aisles. Past that, Jax has loads of outdoor gear, fishing and hunting inventory, clothing, footwear, and even a corner for Boy and Girl scout supplies. It's all very high quality merchandise and a good value. I came in looking for some Carhartt pants, which they don't currently stock. I left very impressed and with a cool and nicely priced little Gerber knife. I found store staff to be friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I'll be back in Ames in a few months (or so), and I'm be sure to stop in again. I'm sure there will be new stuff to admire or goods that I missed during the last visit. And there's no need to drive all the way to Des Moines.

My father and I have made a few purchases at No Limits Outdoors over the last few years. We're not…read more"frequent" shoppers there, but we've made significant purchases when we do make a visit. And every time we have gone there to make a purchase, it's always been a good experience. Most of the time we have dealt with Andrew himself, and he's great at being clear on what they can or can't get in terms of special orders, and has been quick to get back to us on pricing for special orders, availability, etc. Just this last week, my father and I made a special order with them on a Monday and they had the item available to pick up a week and a day later. This time frame seemed perfectly reasonable to me. Also, I was very happy with the price for this particular item. I was expecting to pay a bit more, and that was before we got a discount for paying up front in cash. For my father and I, No Limits Outdoors has become our first stop when looking for a particular firearm. To date, there is only one firearm I had been looking for that they either didn't have or couldn't obtain - and it was a pretty esoteric item to begin with so I was not surprised. The staff has always been helpful and courteous. Like most any business, there are times where they may be busy with several customers but when they're working with you - you really feel like they're working with you. These days, that alone kinda goes a long way. Know what I mean?

This is a Target. As a store, Targets are becoming interchangeable. The only difference is the…read moreatmosphere, which always mirrors the neighborhood where the store is located. This store SCREAMS Fort Dodge. It has pretty much everything you would expect from a Target. A decent selection of electronics, the same clothing, household items and toys every other Target has. They have a decent grocery section (not as vast as a Super Target - hence the "Super" moniker). Even found Templeton Rye on our last visit. But again, remember, you can put a Target in Fort Dodge, but you can't take the Fort Dodge out of the Target. Does that make sense? If you can deal with the citizens of the fine city of Fort Dodge, then you will have no problem dealing with this Target. Unless, of course, you want to take advantage of the Starbucks located in the store. We went to this Target on December 23rd. As you can imagine, it was rather busy. After selecting our items, we split up - my girlfriend got in line to purchase our goods, I went to get in line at the Starbucks to get a cup of coffee. In the entire time it took her to wait in line and check out ON DECEMBER 23RD, the good folks at the Starbucks counter had helped exactly ZERO people. ZERO. I repeat, ZER-O. The idiocy that operates this counter is absolutely stunning. And it's not just the holiday rush. I've been the only person in line and waited 5 minutes before. This is one Target that should never have been allowed a Starbucks counter, because they simply do not have the mental capacity to operate it. Other than that, it's a pretty darn good Target.
