Upon entering the hotel, we were warmly greeted by an employee named Tânia. Before checking us into our room, Tânia offered us a cup of coffee (it was 11am) and proceeded to give us a list of recommendations for food and activities. Since we were quite early (check in is at three), Tânia could not officially check us into our rooms. However, she offered us glasses of wine from the lobby bar, safely placed and locked our suitcases in a back room, and invited us to relax in the cozy lobby area. As lunchtime neared, my wife and I decided to check out Grilled and Company (one of the restaurants recommended by Tânia). In addition to enjoying lunch, we decided to mingle around the very walkable surrounding areas. After mingling around town and doing some shopping, we returned to Dare Lisbon House (DLH) where Tânia had our room keys ready. Before setting us loose, Tânia explained to us that there would be eggs in the room's fridge (the room has an electric stove), and every morning a bag of fresh bread would be delivered at our door. She also explained that the hot water in the shower only lasts for 10 minutes; therefore, I would have to cut my traditional 30 minute shower short (she did not say that part). We were thoroughly impressed with the cozy, and quiet room. The room had great lighting, comfortable living room seating, a microwave (for reheating those delicious cod cakes that you couldn't finish), a fridge (for storing a bottle or two of vinho verde), and a stovetop (for cooking breakfast + additional meals). Although my wife and I were looking forward to the next stop on our tour of Portugal (Madera), we were sad to leave DLH. In the three days that we were there, we had some great conversations with Tânia and some of the hotel guests. In addition, we greatly appreciated the wonderful recommendations that Tânia made. Before checking out, Tânia assisted us with booking an all-day historical tour of Lisbon (the final leg of our Portugal tour had us returning to Lisbon). If you're looking for a boutique hotel with friendly staff, free wine & coffee (in the lobby), a comfortable and quiet room, and in close proximity to many restaurants & stores, I would highly recommend Dare Lisbon House!

There is no breakfast at the hotel anymore but that didn't bother us. It gave us a chance to try some local spots in the morning before we started our day. Very safe, very accommodating, and I can't wait to return to see more! Casa do Pátio is a courtyard-style hotel with guest rooms, and also adjacent apartments. It has a very Bohemian feel, with a city-sophisticated staff, who are also extremely down-to-earth and friendly. I definitely got a taste of the best of old and new Lisbon staying here, which is exactly what I wanted. Casa do Pátio's buildings are full of charm, with the quintessential look of old Portugal, but the interiors are updated with all the modern conveniences and comforts you need. We had one of the apartments, which are located between the 2nd and 4th floors of a traditional building next to Casa do Pátio. While the hotel rooms are at ground level, the apartments are accessible only via stairs. Each apartment comes with a TV, DVD player, air-conditioning, and a kitchenette. Our apartment had a washing machine, and some come with a dishwasher. It was spacious, with a kitchen/living common room, sizable bedroom, and bath with shower stall. We had some nice views of Lisbon from our 3rd story room. Daily maid service was included. Breakfast is offered, but served through a different hotel (about 4min walk) for 8€. For those in guest rooms in the hotel part, there is a common room with kitchen in the hotel office/reception area. They sometimes serve complimentary snacks there. Free WIFI is great, very strong, and available wherever your room or apartment is. The staff is WONDERFUL! We found them to be super courteous and helpful. Perfect English! They have all kinds of info and tips about the city, and are very eager to help upon request. They helped us with local calls to TAP Air Portugal when we had trouble checking in online before we left (both by calling for us from their land line, AND speaking to them on our behalf to ease language barriers). They also booked us a table at a local restaurant, and scheduled us a taxi at 5am, for our departure day, which we could pre-pay on our c-card right there in the office. Absolutely wonderful of them to think of every need and help at a 4- or 5-star hotel level! We were in Lisbon at Casa do Pátio for 3 nights, during Carnival / Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday), so rooms were sparse and prices were jacked. On Shrove Tuesday itself, some businesses were closed, but Casa was super-accommodating about our multiple inquiries asking what was open, and what we could do (most places were still open, including museums, though some had Sunday hours in effect). We had a great stay and hope to return! * * * TIP * * * MUST SEE - Miradouro de Santa Catarina is very close by, as is Ascensor da Bica. * * * TIP * * * Metro to the airport is cheap and fairly quick. If you prefer, the hotel will call a taxi for you, and they can charge the 15€ taxi fee to your credit card, so you are all reserved/paid in advance. Taxi is a 20min ride from hotel to airport. * * * TIP * * * They are on resident-access-only streets, so if you are taking a taxi, call them ahead, or ask your driver, to assure access into the neighborhood, to prevent having to walk a distance. If you have a rental car, the nearest garage is still a healthy walk with luggage (on cobblestones) from the hotel. * * * TIP * * * Great view from upper floor apartments. * * * TIP * * * For APARTMENTS -- No elevator / narrow staircase. Must climb flights with luggage. * * * TIP * * * If staying in an apartment, bring dollar store items for dish soap, detergent, veggie peeler, etc., which you can leave behind when you go. We were glad to have had these things with us, so we didn't have to waste vacation time trying to find them in stores. They are all more costly in Lisbon.

Uber's GPS would drop you off at the less convenient access spot making it rather difficult to find. TIP: I would use "Rua Gaviotas 11" as the GPS destination address since this would make Uber drop you off at the corner of Rua Gaviotas and Rua Fernandes Tomas. You can then can walk-up Rua Fernandes Tomas then turn left into an alley-like street called Tv. do Caldeira where you'll find the guest house. Our experience was good but not ideal. The rooms are clean and air-conditioned, the beds are very comfortable but the showers are rather tight. Our room had a refrigerator. They had a hair dryer which is a must for my wife. The wi-fi was adequate although it would sometimes drop. They have a small safe thus if you have expensive electronics chance it won't fit and you might have to bring it around you. They have a great breakfast buffet, with good coffee, freshly-squeezed orange juice and eggs cooked to order. They have very helpful and friendly staff and they allow you to store your luggage on site if you come too early or if you want to enjoy Lisbon for a few more hours after check-out. Again, finding the place can be a challenge, and you will have to walk-up a hilly cobblestone street which can be problem if you have to drag a good-sized luggage with you or if your'e out of shape. Overall we enjoyed our stay. I would give them 3.5-stars but not 4-stars.

Our stay here was literally and figuratively on a whole 'nother level. Our room was in one of their mezzanine rooms- so it felt like we were in like a mini townhouse since it was a 2 level room. One is greeted with a small foyer and then stairs that lead to the bathroom and then the topmost landing to the sleeping area. We loved how it felt like we weren't in a hotel. Upon the arrival to our bedroom, we were greeted with a nice amuse-bouche of Lisbon's quintessential dessert, pastel de nata and a souvenir of the iconic azulejos. The attention to detail is apparent in every corner. While the impeccable accommodations were stellar, there was some thing that made our stay inhospitable. Unfortunately, the people in the front desk left quite an unpalatable impression on us. Most would consider it wise to put a friendlier face at the front end of such an establishment. A welcoming face and an affable and understanding demeanor to weary and confused travelers would be a wonderful warm welcome!! However, this was not the case. The front desk people need some refresher course on their pleasantries and welcoming skills. Good thing this was not the first hotel we stayed upon arriving to the country!! We immediately wished that we had gone back to The Lumiares Hotel & Spa in Barrio Alto. Despite that place being busy and at the center of Barrio Alto, the staff there truly were hospitable and engaging; night and day difference compared to this one. I understand that the hotel could be busy but there's a difference with attentive staff on busy hours and just plain aloof. There were 2 gentleman and a lady who were in their desks. I observed all 3 of them sitting coldly in there while they were ent about their routine. There was another elderly couple standing with us when we were waiting for our turn to get checked in, and the guy on the other desk just sat there while his other colleagues were going about their work. Let's give him the benefit of a doubt... He could be busy or maybe not able to check any of us in, but one could argue that it's still not hard to provide some friendly support or maybe asked the other guests if there was anything that he could help with while we stand there. I mean offer the poor lady with a cane a chair perhaps while her poor husband was trying to coral their luggage's, the guy could've called a bellhop to help them. Regardless, the lady who checked us in was business as usual; all cold and quite unwelcoming that she couldn't even be bothered to try and work up a mere smile so she could appear acutely affable. After all, you are in the hospitality business and the face of the establishment being situated in the front. Thankfully, interacting with the front desk was a short one. Despite all that, I hate to highlight that debacle because the rest of the staff were wonderful! They were welcoming and friendly. Whenever we had our breakfasts, we were always pleasantly greeted. The servers and the kitchen staff were attentive. Despite being busy, they took their time to answer and explain some of our questions and sincerely asked us about our stay. Our server was delightful & genuinely curious about our trip and was kind to give us ideas and suggestions. We heard her have the same pleasant interactions with the other guests and impressively in other languages. Overall, besides our front desk fiasco, we still enjoyed our stay here. Fortunately, our interactions with the rest of the staff thankfully overshadowed the unpalatable experience we had with the front. Bad: The gym is small and doesn't offer a lot of variety. The food is so good in Portugal that exercise is a necessity (even with all the hills in Lisbon). The gym is also not open 24/7 as advertised. The door is closed and locked at night; and clients must go to the front desk to get someone to unlock the gym instead of being able to use their room key, which is the standard in most hotels. Good: Diogo and Daniela: What an AMAZING Team!!!! A concierge is a dedicated staff member who helps guests with various services. Their primary role is to save people time and make life easier by handling tasks like making reservations, arranging travel, securing event tickets, and providing personalized recommendations. Diogo and Daniela perform that duty better than anyone I have experienced in any country. The present a master class-level of service. I knew Lisbon would be an amazing experience; but Diogo and Daniela sealed the deal in stellar fashion!

I've stayed at boutique hotels before but this one is super 'boutique' wherein no two rooms are the same. Not sure how I feel about that. The hotel is located on the second floor and in between two shoe stores but they sent directions beforehand, so it was pretty clear how to enter the building. Here is some of the good and bad: Pros: -Breakfast is included and it's a pretty decent selection. They even have eggs made to order, and the eggs are super fresh -Free coffee/tea 24/7 -Towel warmers in the bathroom Cons: -We were located on the 6th floor, but the elevator only goes up to the 5th floor. Meaning we had to lug our luggage up and down the stairs. The elevators are also super cramped so if you're claustrophobic, it's definitely not for you -I think the rooms on the lower floors have been renovated because our room looked super old. I'm almost certain there might have been a few murders that went down in our room back in the day, because it just gives that vibe. There's a semi-hidden extra single bed, and some locked half doors in the room. Since it was the top floor, half the room had the slanted ceiling because of the roof -Since ours was an older room, we didn't have a rainfall shower -HUGE dead roach on ground floor of the building, which isn't really the hotels fault but you know if you see one in the building, there is bound to be some in the hotel. Luckily, we didn't come across any other ones, dead or alive The rooms on the booking website looked fine. My family's rooms looked more in line with what we saw online. But I guess they don't really advertise the murder room. Overall, it was just not a comfortable stay. I couldn't wait to leave. At least everything was clean?

When we first reached the hotel, the Uber driver let us out at a location that wasn't exactly in front of the hotel. As we were walking, we got turned around and called the hotel to let them know that we couldn't figure it out and one of the front desk's associates actually came out to find us and walk us back to the hotel even helping us with our luggage on the walk back to the hotel. If you're visiting Lisbon and want to be located in an area that has so much to offer and with so much energy, I would recommend this hotel

That being said, they upgraded my room which would have been a major perk except the upgraded room was right next to the construction next door. I was close enough to hear the voices of the workers. To say it was a gawd awful experience is putting it mildly. I would have much preferred the original room to be spared that noise Morning and Night. Never again.
