Great stay in Lisbon this fall! The location of this hotel literally cannot be beat. I had it in my mind that I was going to stay at Four Seasons, but thankfully, my travel agent did her homework and told me this boutique would be far better location wise and top tier. She was right! Insanely spacious, comfortable rooms. Excellent breakfast, rooftop deck, restaurant upstairs. Beautiful common area on the mezzanine level to enjoy a coffee and pastry taking a respite during the afternoon between seeing the city. All in all, Bairro Alto was great! Walked from here to two Michelin two starred restaurants, an amazing pizza place, walking tour of the city, the world's best chocolate cake, and so much more. There is really everything right here you would want. Keep in mind it's a classic boutique hotel. That means small and narrow elevators. So sometimes you just have to be a little patient. Come for the friendly service, amazing location, comfortable beds, beautiful rooms, and know that this is a great place to stay in the heart of Lisbon. Highly recommend. Tip: If you are staying over the weekend, get a floor as high as you can and/or have a sound machine if you want to sleep well because the street noise is loud with people out and about on Friday and Saturday nights. read more

We had trouble finding it. The traffic is a nightmare in Lisbon. We had a snack and drinks on the 6th floor over looking the harbor before taking a nap to rest up for dinner. You can't beat the mushroom burger and cheese platter. I came down at 6:30 Am looking for a cup of coffee. The man at the front desk made me an espresso even though their cafe was not open. He gets my vote. I would return. read more

Where do I begin? Now this is the epitome of LUXE treatment, in a boutique hotel setting. Dare I say, in my avid travels, this is probably the best experience I have had? I extended my Lisbon trip to arrive a day early and opted to stay at Bairro Alto for that first night. Honestly, in hindsight I wish it could have been more. This is 5 star treatment from even before I arrived- texts via WhatsApp to ensure all questions answered, all reservations booked. Then the second I entered the premises and was lead to reception...nothing but warmth and comfort. Katherine was the one who helped me at reception- friendly, kind, offered me a drink (I can now say I had my very first Ginjinha here!) Then Rafael stepped in who was simply TOP-NOTCH. Give him an award for being so elite with service, truly. He and Katherine both ensured I was squared away with even my dinner reservation and later he was at the restaurant itself (BAHR, so great it deserves a separate review), also checking in with me that everything was to satisfaction. The entire hotel is clean, well-kept, and feels just...elevated. I was really impressed by the dining options and the service. This goes for both dinner AND breakfast (what a view) where food was incredibly good and the service was a standout. The Penthouse is also well worth a visit. And the location...couldn't be more prime. Everything is so walkable and this hotel was located by so many hot spots I had bookmarked on my itinerary (i.e. for iconic pastéis de nata, Manteigeria is just a stone's throw away. 5/5 to the fullest! The location of this hotel is ideal. Walking distance to great food, shopping, and local establishments. The customer service is top tier with a genuine friendliness and willingness to go above and beyond. The attention to detail throughout the hotel is obvious. Everything from the curated art on the walls, the layout, and even the amazing toiletries in the bathroom are thoughtful. Breakfast is included in the room rate, and what a treat it is! Very nice hotel with an old world charm, loved the rooftop bar, and the restaurant on 5. You are able to walk to a number of restaurants and shops. You can walk to the water but it is up hill walking back. The rooms were just the correct size for the two of us. read more

We wanted to find a roof top place for our last night in Lisbon. This place was exactly what we were looking for. The terrace had a spectacular view of the river and bridge. We ordered a few drinks and small plates and everything was very tasty. I highly recommend the meat croquettes. The staff were very friendly and if you're looking for a place to enjoy some drinks and a sunset, this is the place for you. read more

First night in Lisbon could not have started better. My friend who is married to a Portuguese told us to start by taking a cocktail at this hotel's roof top terrace before the sun had set. We came there around 8pm and the warm summer light made the view extra beautiful. Orange sunlight on the facades, blue glittering sea, a sky without clouds and then the Golden-Gate-kind-of-bridge in the background... It didn't hurt that the beer was super cold, the mojito was full with flavor and that they brought us some snacks to go with the drinks. I don't know anything about staying at this hotel, but I do recommend a visit to their roof top terrace. Good to know is that the bar has a roof that will protect you from the sun and at least not too heavy rain. And also good to know that the bar is tiny. Perfect for couples or maximum a party of 4. The wifi was down when we were there but I was too happy to worry about that, if I would have been a guest of the hotel, I would have worried more. read more

I haven't actually stayed at this hotel so this review is just for the amazing rooftop bar. Stylish yet comfy at the same time, with incredibly lovely staff, this was one of the highlights of our trip. A sparkly lift takes you up to the 6th floor where you get to enjoy a full bar, amazing cocktails, light dinners and last but not least: THE VIEW! We spend about 60Euro for 2 light main courses and 2 drinks each which isn't that bad. Ask for the wifi password! read more

Great roof bar with a wonderful view of the river Hotel was recently renovated and just reopened in August 2019. Rooms are well appointed and reasonable size. When they expanded they added a back wing. Those rooms are slightly larger but all with king beds are great. read more

What a beautiful hotel in a central location with an awesome staff! Near great shopping and restaurants and transportation. The on-site restaurant is very good. Stayed here for a night after a friend's wedding back in 2012. It's pretty hit or miss with this hotel so here goes: I'm a big techie and not having WiFi in the rooms without a cord? That's inexcusable. Having to pay for it? A slap in the face. Thankfully the lobby had a computer and printer with which to check into my flight. The bed was quite comfortable and the room very clean. The TV had a fuzzy picture, which fine, but I wanted to catch some soccer before flying out in the morning. As another reviewer mentioned, this hotel has a decent rooftop bar whose cocktails and views provide a much needed relaxing atmosphere before going out. The breakfast was decent and provided enough healthy protein to get going in the morning. The location was right in the middle of everything which was cool. My main gripes are the value proposition. This hotel was quite expensive to not get some very simple things right. I would stay elsewhere next time I'm in Lisbon. read more

Summary: Smaller old school room, but nicely decorated in that special Lisboa style. Worth the price for the easy access to the rooftop bar. Great that it's at the top of the hill vs. bottom. Big difference while walking around this hilly city. Location: This is a fantastic location right in the center of the city. There are plenty of nearby sites, shopping and more to be enjoyed. Service: Great staff were there to help. We got our pricing online which was cheaper then waiting until last minute to sort it all out. Food: Breakfast is really great. You should try not to miss it. Tons of people say, "this is one of the better breakfasts I've had." I got to admit, this was one of the better buffet breakfasts. Possibly one in Tel aviv was better of recent. Rooms: Old school Portugese, but high end. Rich in color and very cool and warm at the same time. Romantic, though I was there with the single ladies. I would definitely recommend. I want to echo another reviewer said about the rude and inconsiderate customer service at this hotel. We did not stay at the hotel but went to the rooftop bar on the recommendation of friends who live in Lisbon. When we arrived, the person at the rooftop bar told us there wasn't space and sent us down to the bar off the lobby. He assured us that he would call down as soon as a table was open. We did as he suggested. The barkeep downstairs never came to our table to take our order. This, mind you, with a total of 4 other people in the bar. After waiting ten minutes, I went to the bar to order our cocktails. She seem flustered as if she had no idea that we wanted a drink. She said that the table upstairs would be ready in a few minutes. After the call came in, we went upstairs and were met at the door and shown to a tv-tray like table with seating on a bench by the door. I asked if we could sit at one of the several empty tables that offered a better view, and was told that they were all reserved. When I pressed him, he asked if we were staying at the hotel. After saying that we weren't, he said that the table we were at was the only table we were going to get and that they had to hold the empty tables "in case a hotel guest came along". Clearly they weren't reserved as we sat there for 20 minutes and finished our cocktail that we had carried upstairs. No one else came through the door and sat at the empty tables. No-one came by to see if we wanted another drink and as we were leaving one of the 3 employees standing by the front door muttered an insult to us in Portuguese under his breath. Two comments: first, real power is the power to say "yes". It is not using your position to to make yourself feel bigger. Second, always assume someone else can speak your language. When we told our friends of our experience they were horrified. They'll never send anyone to Bairro Alto Hotel again! read more

Beautiful boutique hotel with the absolutely best location in Lisbon. Superb breakfast (my soy latte arrived at my table without even having to ask for it!), beautiful room with spacious bath, they pay attention to every detail here. From the welcome cocktail when you check in, to (branded!) chocolate on your (branded!) pillow with turn down service. Reception representatives were very helpful in guiding us around, we were seated with minimal waiting time at the lovely rooftop, etc. Highly recommended. read more

We've traveled throughout the world and the Bairro Alto Hotel in Lisbon, Portugal has by far the worst customer service. We arrived at 9:00 AM on August 30th after traveling 10 hours. Despite the fact that we had a reservation through American Express that guaranteed early check in and an upgrade, we were told by the manager "unfortunately that's not going to happen." And then to add more insult to injury, we found out that we had to wait until after 2:00 PM to get our rooms. We take a walk around the city - it's 91 degrees - so by no means is this pleasant. We get back to the hotel at 1:45 and asked if we could have our rooms now. The manager, quite officiously told us "no and I told you before - your room won't be ready until after 2:00 PM." About 5 minutes later a family of 6 walked into the lobby, headed straight for the front desk and after checking in are given keys to their 3 rooms. We went over to the manager and asked why this family was able to get their rooms and we weren't. He pretended not to hear our question, and just got more officious. We stood in the bare lobby because there were only 3 chairs and we waited until finally we got our keys. That was at 2:30 PM. There are plenty of beautiful and customer friendly hotels in Lisbon. The Bairro Alto Hotel is not one of them! read more

My wife and are staying at this excellent hotel now, and we love it. The room is well-appointed, quiet and charming. The location of the hotel is great, as most of downtown is either a short walk or cab ride away. There is a great lounge on the 2nd floor with coffee and snacks, where I can spend time while my wife sleeps in. The wifi is fast and free. And everyone we have met on the staff has been exceptionally friendly and accommodating. read more
