if you don't believe in lengthy reviews, you might want to find another one. continuing on- i don't like to admit this, but i'm tough to please. i'm picky and fickle and i ask for a lot of magic to happen when hair is involved. growing up, my father would sit me and my four brothers in a row once a year and have at us with the kitchen scissors. i was frequently mistaken as the "fifth son" well into my teenage years. it was nice. after i moved out, i began taking myself to supercuts. that was the first half of the ritual. the second half involved driving home and taking my own kitchen scissors to the supercut, while practicing my use of profanity. the natural texture of my hair is fine, flat and stupid. it's hard to find someone willing - or skilled enough - to do more than just cut a basic shape around your face and send you out the door. My hair barely has "color" down, so "shape" is way over it's head. i'm not done guys. since the universe has a fondness for kicking you where it hurts, i wound up working at a well-known salon in nyc after college. we did a lot of runway hair. we did a lot of editorial hair. we did a lot of training. i had an epiphany, and realized that with daily attention from top stylists, my dumb hair could look smart. sometimes. "sometimes" is better than "never". i had a second epiphany not long after leaving that job, where i realized it would take thousands of dollars and the majority of a work-week in a salon chair to keep this first epiphany going. my hair returned to a third grade reading level. last week i was visiting my brother in seattle. i was wearing a lot of beanies. i was spending a lot of alone time in his basement bathroom with his girlfriend's kitchen scissors. i cut a chunk out of my right eyebrow when i mistook it for stray bang. i was being cranky with my boyfriend about things a normal person isn't usually cranky about. like light breezes, and which side he was looking at me from. he suggested i eat something. that didn't help. he suggested i get a hair cut. he is a very brilliant man. giovanna, on the other hand, is a downright genius. the conversation alone was worth the price of the cut. i've spent more money on shorter appointments with a therapist, and walked away feeling like i can even PAY someone to understand me. but that's a different review. giovanna knows her stuff. she knew from the get-go i'd be states away within 24 hours, but she cut my hair like she'd be looking it in the eye on a daily basis. if that's not professionalism, i'm not sure i know what the word means. and i'll probably rile some feathers by saying this, but to those clients who complain that their stylist "didn't listen" to them or treat them with an attitude of, "the customer is always right"? no. the customer is NOT always right. you are taking your dumb hair to an established business where a highly trained professional will be working magic to make it look like nature gave you something good. if you know how to do that yourself, i've got quite a few pair of kitchen scissors you could borrow. i, on the other hand, am more than willing to admit that someone knows more than i do for once, and hand over complete control of my unruly-urchin strands to giovanna - i have every intention of finding my way across three states and back into her chair when the time comes for a touch-up. summary: i let my hair air-dry for the first time in 15 years, today - and i still look like i mean business. hot business. it's a freakin miracle. read more

I was outside during one of their sidewalk sales (besides being a salon, they sell tons of cute style/accessory items) and noticed a huge sign that said "We Fix Bad Brows". Well, I don't think I had BAD brows, per se, but I was definitely in need of a new aesthetician, so I decided to check it out. What can I say? My brows have never looked better! I have recieved numerous compliments from friends and coworkers, and at only $18, its a great deal. I would recommend Lou to anyone and everyone. I have pretty sensitive skin, and have broken out before after a wax, so she tailors my session based on my special requirements and there have been no issues. I have never gotten a hair cut at the salon, but based on my positive experiences with Lou, and the positive reviews (since the salon redoux) I would expect a good outcome. read more

In my opinion, Duque Salon is the best in Seattle (and, no offense to the other stylists in the salon, but Bruno is HANDS DOWN the best stylist in Seattle)! I have recommended the salon to all of my friends -- and I am not the type to recommend anything lightly. I get consistently great hair cuts every time I go. This is what keeps me coming back time and time again -- excellent, stylish, long-wearing cuts at very reasonable prices. The customer service experience is great. I can tell that everyone at Duque really cares about their clientele, and they're all dedicated to making sure I have the best "experience" possible. I don't have to worry about all the snootiness and uptight, high-pressure selling environments of other high-end salons. Instead of focusing on itself, Duque focuses on ME. Kind of a nice break from the usual. I love this salon. I look forward to all my visits, and I sincerely appreciate everything they do for me. read more

A coupon I purchased from Rue La La brought me into this lovely salon months ago - I'm glad it did! I was shown new techniques to style my hair and apply my makeup... Which I loved! While I was there, I noticed and was impressed by the ladies' lovely long eyelashes - turns out, they were extensions. I've seen extensions before - and I always shunned away from the idea because to me, they always looked hideous. These, however, were natural looking and extremely gorgeous. I've been going regularly now for my fills - and not only is it relatively inexpensive, I get tons of compliments on them! I have yet to get a haircut from the salon, but I have an appointment coming up soon, and am looking forward to it! read more

It took a long time to find someone who could cut & color my hair the way I like it. After trying several places I found Robert and he is by far was the best. I trust his judgement completely. Most of the time he'll ask me what I want to do and I tell him to tell me what he thinks I should do (now THAT is trust). I take my step-daughter and recently took my mother to Robert. My step-daughter now wants to bring her mother to Robert, too! A little over a year ago I decided to let my hair color go natural, but I couldn't stand the grow out. So as soon as I possibly could I had Robert cut my hair "pixie short". That was really hard for me because I've had my hair long for probably 20 years. I have always preferred long hair, but still cut it super short because of the obvious grow out of my now primarily grey hair. Robert did such a wonderful job that I received countless compliments on the new 'do. I managed a cosmetic dermatology practice at the time and people pay attention to how you look so getting all those compliments on my new short haircut was really a compliment to Robert's expertise. I let my hair grow out for a year (yes, the cut lasted that long). And now, Robert is back to asking me what I want to do and I'm back to letting him do what he thinks I should. So, watch out for the grey (soon to be white) haired lady with the sexy haircut. 'Cause Robert does it like that! read more

I would like to start with the positives: 1) Lou, the esthetician. She is pleasant and thorough, two things that are important when someone is ripping the hair from your nether regions. 2) Good location and cute decor. Now the big negative to me is the customer service. I had to change the date of me first scheduled service and called three days in advance to do so. The girl on the phone was very rude. Since then I have had a couple of rude encounters over the phone (not sure if it was the same girl or not). I've decided not to go there for services anymore, which is a shame since it's hard to find an esthetician that you like. I just can't justify spending that much money at a place that is rude to their clients. Maybe a Customer Service 101 class could help... read more

I'm surprised to see bad reviews on here. Maybe it's just because they're old and the place has improved a lot. I've been going here off an on for almost 2 years for various services from Lou. She is one of the best aestheticians in Seattle. I've had waxes and facials from her and I've been wanting to try the lash extensions because they look amazing and natural. Lou is so friendly and makes your experience as comfortable as can be. It also helps that the salon is decorated fabulously. She won't pressure you to buy anything else and you can tell that she truly cares about your skin. I can't speak for any of the hair stylists because I've never had my hair done here, but I highly recommend Lou for any spa service! read more

Big News regarding a New Line of Hair Products at Duque! Giovanna introduced me to Living Proof Style/Lab hair products during my last hair appointment. I got the Flex shaping hairspray. It is nothing less than awesome! No icky feeling hair, works like a charm, styling is easy no need to be washing your hair every day then applying tons of stuff to get the textured look. Also purchased Amp instant texture volumizer. Giovanna mentioned that this line is kind of a breakthrough line, that nothing really new had come along in many years Well it is breakthrough. I am a minimalist when it comes to products for hair, this so works for me. I also like all of you are on the prowl for products that work (for me not necessarily hair, but we all know what the promise the moon, then deliver zero purchases are about. What a sad, very sad display. After a week of dreaming to have a pedicure and massage done @ Duque I arrived excited on a Sunday only to be ignored by the front desk staff. A friendly face came from the back and greeted me. The front desk staff continued to ignore me as I stood a foot away and said to the other staff to tell me to return when my girlfriend was present also. My girlfriend and I showed up @ 12:15...15 min late for our massage and pedicure. The same front desk staff was there and told us that because we were late they were only going to be able to accomodate 1 person, but I was still going to be charged $150.00 price because according to her being late was the same as cancelling. We exchanged a few words and after calling her a b%^# she asked me to leave. My girlfriend and I left dissapointed that the young lady @ the front desk felt she could treat us that way because as she said "I am not only the manager, but the owner's daughter. " When I called my bank @ 12:21 and was giving the information about the business, within 3 minutes the Duque salon owner's daughter had ran my card to deduct $150.00 for a pedicure and massage that I never received because I was 15 min. late. read more

I go to Duque for waxing. I have been going to Autumn for eyebrow tints and wax for years. She is outstanding. Nobody shapes them with as much understanding of my face or as carefully as she does. Best in town! All her other services are excellent too. She is very passionate about what she does and always remembers me and my life, which is a rare and nice added bonus. read more

I'm a firm believer that everybody deserves a second chance. This place blew both. My first time here I got a haircut with Giovanna and a wax (brazilian, legs evrything). Giovanna's was the most expensive haircut I've ver had and also the worst one. My own boyfriend had to admit that the haircut was "off", (although he was afraid he was never going to hear the end of it). Random people also noticed that I had a chunk of hair that just looked chopped-off by mistake. Giovanna is apparently very experienced but does not seem to undesrtand what you want or what you need in any way you explain it. It was more like she had something in mind and that's what she did. She cut my hair way shorter than I asked her to. while she was working on my hair she was also busy talking to other clients and in particular 2 people who stopped by to say hello and off she went, chatting away, holding the hairdryer and burning my scalp. We got into this sort of "fight" where I was clearly showing I was uncomfortable and she kept pulling more and more. she apologized several times but she kept doing it and then she asked me if I was sensitive. At some point I wanted to leave with my hair wet, if it wasn't the middle of winter in Seattle. The waxing is the interesting part about this place. I got my waxing done here because I bought a coupon. Both times I got the same aestetician. This is the most intimate encounter I've ever had with the person who did my waxing. I mean, I'm 35 and I'm no prude, I've been getting brazilians for almost 15 years now, I've had them done in different countries and even different continents, but never got so akward as it did here. She asked me both times to lay in child pose, holding my knees up while she does the waxing down there and this can take, at times, a little while. Now I know that having a brazilian is not the most fun you can have, but usually they have you lay sideways, or they give you something to cover whatever side is not being waxed. In any case I've never had an aesthetician have such a close, detailed, wide open encounter with my private parts. The second time I asked to have someone else but they could not track who did my waxing the last time so I got her again. She did the whole thing in less than 20 minutes. I thought maybe I shouldn't have mentioned my coupon. She also does not use anything to "prepare" the area like they usually do and also, and this is a bit embarassing, she does not trim. She does seem to know, realize or understand that often times you have to trim a bit before waxing. This is also something that other aestheticians do without you having to mention it. I was very afraid the last time because I actually asked her to trim and she said it was not necessary. Needless to say the experience was very painful. And most definitely the most awkward, uncomfortable waxing experience I've ever had. Needless to say I'll never go back. read more

i just read cici's review. i am being treated in a similar, completely UNPROFESSIONAL manner. they are holding my money hostage. and what i got was a BAD BAD haircut. thank god for hats. the owner cut my hair. it was the absolute worst haircut of my life! they refused to even try and fix it. so i had to go back, tail between, to my regular stylist and ask him to help me. even he was pressed to say he hadn't seen a worse cut. i think the most horrific part of this experience was the complete indifference they have to my situation. they do get one award however. nastiest receptionist. congratulations nicky! read more

I was calling around Ballard for a last minute make up application for a party and stumbled on a jewel at Duque. Heather did the most amazing job. She was sweet and efficient and my make up looked fierce!. It felt light, looked modern and clean and held up all night. The price was a little steep but it was worth it. I'll def be back to see her and maybe even take a lesson so that I can attempt the smoky eye at home. Thank you Heather. You Rock! read more

I am not trusting of hair stylists. I've come away with purplish, copper or ash hair almost every time I have it colored. I've gone in for a trim and come out butchered with a short mullet. I had just lost all faith and confidence in salons. I hadn't had my hair colored or styled for about 5 years and I was mostly happy with my hair as it was. BUT, my best friend's husband created a fun "Girl's Day Out" for the two of us and scheduled appointments for us to have our hair done at Duque Salon and then go to a ballet. We were unfamiliar with the area and we figured we would be a few minutes late due to bad GPS directions. I called the salon to let them know we'd be about 5 minutes late and the receptionist, Kat, was very friendly about the situation. However we were 26 minutes late and were pretty sure that we would not be seen. We did muster up the courage to walk into the salon and were treated very warmly. Giovanna took my friend back to have her hair done and Robert welcomed me, not making a big deal out of our being late, which was such a relief! So I have long, brown, straight boring hair but I don't realize how boring it is. I tell Robert that I'd like it darkened and cut. He shows me a color that he thinks will compliment my complexion and proceeds like Edward Scissorhands. He and Giovanna kept my girlfriend and I laughing the whole time we were there. It was a very comfortable atmosphere. At one point there was a misunderstanding about what our Groupon would cover and they agreed to "modify" the Groupon to also include our makeup being styled just so that we could have a nice experience on our way to the ballet. They never shamed us for our misunderstanding or for being late. When Robert was done with my hair I was thrilled. It's been two months now and my hair has held it's color. It's still not coppery or ashy. It's truly the color that he showed me it would be. I never thought of layers because they'd always made my hair look so much thinner and crappier that if it were just straight and all one length. Robert put some long layers in my hair and I feel so sexy and sophisticated now. I will only go to this salon for the rest of my days! I have been going here a few years now for cuts and color. It was my first time doing a dry haircut so I didn't know what to expect. Robert is absolutely amazing! I love the highlights he added to my hair and the haircut and layers last so much longer without getting grown out. If you're worried about price, it definitely is worth it and it will last you longer than other places. read more

I've been to Duque three times over the last few months for eyebrow waxing. My first appointment was excellent. They have this secluded, quiet room upstairs that was very relaxing. The aesthetician was thorough, did not rush through the appointment and taught me how to color my brows with powder. I left a very happy camper! My second appointment went down hill quite a bit. They sat me upright in a hair salon chair and quickly sped through the process. I left semi-unhappy as I had to go home and tweeze the smaller hairs she didn't get (no light was used to verify work). I made a third appointment. This was last minute and I had accepted that the work would be completed haphazardly, because I had to jet out of town the next day and couldn't get in elsewhere. When I arrived, the aesthetician guided me to raised platform in the WINDOW (picture mannequins on display, people!) where she proceeded to wax me in front of a sign that said "We fix bad brows!" in front of all of Ballard pedestrians to see! Also, I was wearing a dress with my lap facing the window while tilted back in a salon chair with nothing to ensure I wasn't flashing my underpants at the entire neighborhood. I was MORTIFIED. Thank goodness I was only getting a brow wax. Goodness gracious! I will NOT be returning to Duque. read more

I'm a new client of Giovanna, one of the owners, and came to her on a recommendation from my co-worker. I loved my first haircut and came back for another. She really listened to what I wanted and created the kick-ass rock-n-roll haircut I asked for. I had a bang trim in between cuts that was perfect. I also loved that I didn't need an appointment for bang trim! She is amazingly knowledgeable and experienced and now I will recommend her as well. The salon is clean and a great space and the staff has always been professional and friendly. I live across town was looking for something closer but it's well worth the drive to have your hair in talented hands. read more

Lou's lash extensions are the best in town! I've been seeing Lou at Duque for about 4 months and she is the greatest with lashes. Her little upstairs treatment room is adorable, she's always playing great music, and Lou herself is a delight. Her work is hands down the best I've ever seen - I always leave feeling like a million bucks. If you prebook your next fill she gives you 10% off, which is a great way to keep me regular. I usually go every 2-3 weeks and her prices for fills vary depending on how many weeks out you are. She might be at the high end of pricing, but she uses the best materials and my lashes always look great. Totally worth the money and I won't go anywhere else! read more

AWFUL customer service and completely overpriced. I spent over 45 for a service that was only so-so and took place in an open room with yucky carpet. NOT relaxing. Called back to try and use a groupon and after 5 minutes of the rep searching through the computer to not find me, I asked what else he needed? He hung up on me. The good, the bad, the ugly..... I held off writing this review in hopes that Robert and Giovanna would make right the terrible wrong done to me, at the hands of one of their stylist, Natalie K. They did not. I would highly recommend that you steer clear of this salon, my reasons are below. I have naturally curly hair, it is full, large with tight riglets and it is my identity. I have been going to a stylist for over 15 years and have never been so mortified by the result of a haircut. Natalie was recommended by Giovanna, after Giovanna cut my hair. She indicated that if I didn't want to pay her expertise prices ($200+tip), she highly recommended Natalie. I believe now, she just didn't want any more clients. What a terrible, terrible mistake I made and shame on Giovanna for recommending someone with so little expertise in cutting curly hair and while knowing how I was willing to pay whatever for expertise. Yet, when Giovanna was chatting me up, she had gained my trust. And to insure you understand this is a fair review-Giovanna gave me the best haircut I have ever had in my life, the best. My return a couple months later to Natalie resulted in the worst haircut of my life and one that 3 months later, I'm still living with. Problem #1: Duque uses the dry and straight cut method at their salon. When Giovanna cut my hair, she straightened all my hair and then cut. When Natalie cut my hair, she straightened portions at a time and then cut. I should have known this was off to a bad start. When I left the salon, my hair was not fully dry and it wasn't until the next day, I saw the damage. My haircut was completely uneven and after diffusing my hair in the morning, it seemed to have lost some of its curl. I took pictures and then called Natalie. She had me come in to fix the uneven cut. I mentioned the haircut did not give me the bounce that Giovanna's cut had provided me, I even showed her the picture I loved after G's haircut. This time, I asked to diffuse my hair at her salon, myself in front of her. The cut was at least even but literally, the riglet curls I had around my face were straight. My curls were gone. We discussed, she seemed freaked and said go home and use your products and see if they come back. They didn't, I called that night immediately and said, they are gone. She asked if I wanted to come in again. I was in tears, my curls were straight. I wanted to stay as far away from that salon as possible, I asked for my money back. She said she would call Giovanna for advice and to confirm the refund. Natalie returned a call and indicated Giovanna said my curls would return in a couple days and most likely Natalie over thinned. They did not return and now almost 3 months later, my hair still has many straight ends and the curls have not returned. It's terrible. It gets worst. Natalie was apologetic and I genuinely believe she felt bad. Yet, let's be honest the damage was and is done and this didn't alleviate the damage. Problem #2: I stop in 3 days later to pick up my refund and Natalie indicated they have to wait a billing cycle. I wait one week and do not receive it. I stop in that Sunday and Natalie and Giovanna are standing outside their salon and I indicate, I still haven't received my refund. Giovanna doesn't even look at me or make any mention of the failings of her stylist. I really found this to be of extremely poor taste. After waiting another couple days and a phone call to Robert, the owner, I finally get my refund. But they didn't refund it all. Of the $85 bill, they refund me $40. Are you kidding me? I call again and talk to Robert, he indicates Duque will not refund my $25 deep conditioning. I didn't fight the deep conditioning but I asked, why would you think it's okay to keep my $15 tip? He says no one told him about the tip and he'll send me another check. Problem #3: Yea, it's 8/8/12 and I still haven't received the refund of my tip. What a shameful, shameful salon. They ruined my hair, they kept my tip and not one of the owners called me to, at minimum, offer their apologies. For the amount of damage that Natalie did to my hair, I think they should have at least asked to see my hair and offer their expertise, as they are clearly better (Giovanna) stylists. So if anyone is out there and knows someone that can fix an overly thinned curly hair of ringlets, please help me, I just want my curls back. read more

I slipped into this salon on Sunday because my regular stylist has been unavailable, totally love the cut I got, and so now I have a new stylist. Her name is Kathleen and all I told her was 'make me look younger' half in jest, because everyone in their 50's wishes they looked younger. (I assume!) To my complete surprise, I think I actually do look younger! Woohoo! Kathleen gets it. read more

The best salon ever. Haircuts and color by Giovanna are superb. She is by far the most skilled stylist and colorist I have ever visited.

Let me first say that no one was rude to me. They were all very nice. I went there for a haircut because I bought a discounted certificate. Their website says haircut from $50. I didn't confirm the cost of the haircut and I should have. I've made too many mistakes concerning this whole experience. The haircut was $85 not including a tip. Thank goodness I had less than an inch cut off, because had it been a short haircut, I would have cried. Supercut or Great Clips would have provided the same quality cut for maybe $20. I take that back, Great Clips provided a better haircut, because I went there soon after to get my hair fixed. Any other time and I would have just put my hair in a pony tail until it was long enough not to notice the choppiness, but I am getting married in three weeks. One side of my head looks like my dog thought my hair was a better rawhide. read more

The customer service was terrible! The wax they used wasn't the standard wax I've had everywhere else and kept getting stuck to my skin. When ripping off the wax several times she took skin with it which was horribly painful. I complained about this while on the table and when I finally told her I couldn't bare the pain anymore and I wanted her to stop she gave me an oil to get the remaining wax off of my skin and went downstairs. When I went to check out and give her my Groupon she was nowhere to be found. Another woman took my groupon and said to have a good night. The woman Lou didn't apologize or even recognize the pain she put me through. Going forward I will continue to go to WaxOn where I've never had a problem with the waxing service and the customer service has always been amazing. read more

Went in for a facial. Horrible receptionist/hostess. Brand new aesthetician who didn't warn me what was coming next or being applied and had a terrible "massage" technique. Was given a sample of moisturizer that was then taken away by the receptionist who wanted to charge me for it and wasn't even sure if it was for sale. Then told I had to unlock the door and let myself out. Definitely will not go back. read more

I recently moved to Seattle and for weeks avoided getting an eyebrow wax. I am extremely cautious about over plucking/over waxing/overly thin brows, which seems to be a trend in even the most expensive of salons. The salon is located in an open and conspicuous corner on Ballard Ave so its not easy to miss. I thought I'd give it to try since my eyebrows resembled those of Bert from Sesame Street, and I thought enough was enough. Plus I remembered there slogan "we fix bad brows". Though I desperately needed a good wax, I was still apprehensive of the salon and waxing services. I made this very clear when I called for an appointment and the receptionist was more than understanding. The girl that did the waxing was very professional, and took her time, nearly 45 minutes to make sure they were absolutely perfect! Not only do my eyebrows look stellar, she gave me a bit more arch than I am normally used to and love them. I will surely go back and recommend this place to anyone. Not sure what everyone is smoking but I've only ever had great experiences at Duque and have recommended the salon to everyone I know, including my own sister whom I am very protective of. They are ALWAYS nice and you can tell that their main concern is that their clients have a great relaxing experience. Bruno even stayed a whole hour past closing one day just to do my hair, we were literally the last ones in the salon! I appreciate that there aren't a million kids running around or people talking away on their cell phones. When I go to get my hair done I always leave relaxed and happy with the results. Also btw, best hair cuts of my life! I highly recommend anyone who apparently has had a bad experience to give Duque another shot, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with your second visit. I'm not usually one to yelp, figuring everyone has a bad day every once in a while, so this is a comparison. Today is a Saturday. My eyebrows needed some attention beyond my own rough tweezing. I walked in to Duque since I've often seen the "We fix bad brows" sign. I was immediately greeted, and a young lady said she just needed to clean up before helping me. I was given 2 pages to fill out, which seemed excessive for a brow wax, but I filled it out. Then I sat there for 25 minutes before anyone even asked if I'd been helped. The original young lady had almost immediately started doing someone's hair and the original receptionist was doing someone else's make-up. The man who asked if I'd been helped said he'd get someone to see me immediately after I told him in fact I had not been helped. Another 10 minutes passed with no attention, so I told them I was just going to cancel. I left, went 2 blocks to the Source Salon, walked in and got my brows done. I was in and out in 10 minutes, having been treated by professionals and my eyebrows look amazing. No essays to fill out, no sitting around ignored. a couple of years ago i had a pleasent experience with asthetician after deciding to take my bisiness to a neighborhood salonm to get my brows waxed.i get my hair cut from my daughter who works at bocz downtown. thats a great place..well i made an appt with Autumn and came in on my way home from work i got put in a back room i waited 35 min and was just about to leave when she came in...the wax was fine and a couple of months later i made another appt. i had a serious family emergency that and tried all am to contact them to just to reschedule the time of the appt but their answering service was out. i finally did get through and was told that i could not reschedule and woul be charged anyway the full price. needless to say we had an argument over the phone and said if they billed me i would never be back.. when i opened my credit cd bill this month i saw the charge on my acct. i have notified the company and will be complaining to the better business bureau. i now know why the place is usually empty ...browzers excluded...what a poor way to run a shop . i know i will never return even if i do get my money back... read more
