Not sure where we read about this place but after we toured the nearby Aztec National Monument we…read morestopped in downtown Aztec for this quirky museum. It is now $5 but well worth it. The volunteer manning the front desk was beyond helpful and got us oriented for our self guided tour. The displays in the main building are a real hodgepodge of artifacts. We wondered how many of the Native American items were looted and should be returned to their rightful owners. Nonetheless it was an interesting collection. We then entered the annex and were taken aback by the cyclorama - never seen anything like it. Afterward we wandered the small village of original and reconstructed village buildings. Very impressive. The amount of work it took to move, gather and in some cases rebuild these structures is hard to imagine. They obviously have some very dedicated volunteers and donors. Surprisingly worth the time to visit this slice of Americana.

Great local history museum. They have an indoor portion and then an entire campus with buildings…read more The Director was very helpful in assisting us when we came with someone in a wheelchair; she opened the back gate and brought out the ramp for the basement. A lot of the historic structures limit wheelchair accessibility, but she was happy to help with what she could. If you have a limited mobility visitor with you, I suggest calling ahead so make sure the staff working that day know how to accommodate you. We spent about an hour and a half here total.

(The weekend I stayed there, it played host to a baby shower.) Upstairs, the Airbnb "apartment" covers the entire footprint of the building. The apartment is accessible by stairs on the back side of the building. We did not cross paths with the baby shower attendees, nor did they have access to the Airbnb space. My nephews and their spouses, who were staying with me, arrived at The Leanor before I did; they had no issues entering the property without me. Even on this hot summer day, the apartment was comfortably cooled. Each room had its own A/C unit. The master bedroom had its own bathroom, and there were two hallway bathrooms. Each of the three couples had their own beautifully remodeled bathroom, with natural lighting from glass blocks in the walls and floor-to-ceiling glass door showers. One of the rooms had an adjoining suite with queen-sized bunk beds and whimsical animal artwork and hangers for guests who have younger children. Just a block away, you can find a bank, drug store, record shop, dispensary, gas station, and Safeway grocery store. Rubia's gourmet Mexican restaurant and the 505 Tap House are both just across the street. The Leanor was built in 1906 and was originally the post office for Aztec; it is on the state and national registries of historic places. Robin, the host and owner, has done an incredible job renovating The Leanor to modern standards while never losing the charming Old West atmosphere of a nearly 120-year-old building. The space is quiet and comfortable, definitely a "home away from home" that I can't wait to stay in again.
