Neighbors are getting a new fence installed...I pull up and have fencing material scattered all over MY front lawn and a dog drinking from my hose (look close, you can see the dog's bowl on my lawn as well) along with a second work truck blocking MY driveway. Asked them to clean up and move everything off of MY lawn and was told "the guys are having lunch, they will get to it when they are done". Uhhhh how about no. Starting out 2023 with two major Atmospheric River storms and first ever Storm Rating of "5" for the Bay Area......and first ever hurricane wind forces, we had a total side fench blow over and destroyed of 80 feet! There was only one solution, for no handyman could salvage this fench. I called Mr Jim Durham of Durham Fench. And from that first phone call they earned my respect for their concern and immediate attention. No fench, no gates up and our dogs no safe yard to stay in. The owner is jerk. Not sure if he's racist and or sexist. He was working on fixing a portion of our fence with our neighbor. He parked his car on our lawn. Asked to move it and said "I will move it two inches". What is that?! Was going to ask for a quote to replace another area but no thank you. Don't want to deal with his attitude. We hired Durham Fence Company to do a fencing project comprised of several steep grades and multiple areas requiring earth retainment. This project was large-scale in nature, as it involved 5 total properties (our home plus 4 neighbors) and over 250ft of fencing. I am admittedly detail-oriented and had a plethora of questions and comments prior to, during, and after the job. Jim never gave me grief about my numerous inquiries and always responded to them in a timely fashion. From start to finish, he and his crew were extremely professional and thorough. I read the Yelp posts prior to hiring Jim and had concerns about the 2 negative reviews. I don't want to discredit the other individuals as their experiences were what they were; however, I can say that my experience with Jim and Durham Fence Company was superb. Jim did not appear to cut corners to minimize cost: the materials were top-notch, post holes were appropriately deep, and concrete footings were deep and wide enough to support the posts but not so high that they were an eyesore. The crew cleaned the property at the end of each day and did a more comprehensive cleaning at the conclusion of the project. Some plants were lost over the course of the project and there was some minimal residual dirt after the job was complete; however, this is a major construction event and I fully expected that there would be some collateral damage. In the end, these losses were minimal. Overall, I would highly recommend Durham Fence Company without reservation. It was a delight to work with Jim and I plan to refer him to any of my friends with fencing needs. read more

I never got a callback. Fence was quoted by Marsh Fence the day after calling. Sorry but I did try to get the to come but it seems communication is not on the top of Durham's (Jim) list. No matter, they will still do business because not everyone reads Yelp and there are few fence companies along the peninsula so they can continue to perform like they do. Saw good reviews on nextdoor.com and yelp, so called for an estimate. Got a call back about a week later, and he said he'd come by during a certain two-hour window. He didn't show, and when we called, he said he'd be by during a different two-hour window. He didn't show, and when we called, he said he couldn't make it that day at all. We rescheduled for another two-hour window on another day, and he still didn't show. We called three times throughout the day, but nobody ever answered, and the voicemail was full. This was four days ago, and he still hasn't called. If you're too busy to come by, please don't make appointments. If you can't follow through with an appointment, please call to let us know. Nobody appreciates having to take time off work and wait around for nothing - more than once. read more

I've tried this business multiple times and different times of the year (even when there have been no storms) and never get a return phone call. The reason why I keep trying is because the fences I have seen this company do look nice and the company is recommended by neighbors. I'm baffled as to why I don't even get a return phone call for a quote. I interviewed 4 fence contractors in the bay area before deciding to go with Durham Fence Company. My job site was a bit challenging so it was important to find a skilled, experienced, and detail-oriented team. Jim and his crew were the perfect fit for the job. The 7' redwood fence had to be built atop a concrete retaining wall that had sharp drop-offs on both sides. I'm told this is typical of San Francisco where backyards are often terraced atop one another. Despite the difficult environment, the team worked quickly and the results look great. Durham Fence is not a customer oriented company. They installed a new fence for me in 1998. I needed some repairs to this fence and called them at least 3 times and e-mailed them once. I never received a response either by e-mail or phone. My guess is that they must be out of business. If you need fence work done. We originally hired Jim to redo a horrible fence we had that surrounded part of our property and a paddle tennis court. Jim was very patient me as I went back and forth between the style of fence that was going to look best in my yard. He gave me some great ideas and some different projects that he had completed so I could see the actual ideas we were discussing. We had a retaining wall that was falling apart that supported the paddle court and was connected to our fence. Jim's crew did an amazing job of creating a seamless look between the fence and the retaining wall while at the same time making it stronger and more durable than it had been upon the original installation. We loved the look of our fence so much we decided to have Jim come back and do the other end of our yard. I LOVE MY FENCE it truly brings the entire yard together. I would highly recommend Jim. As with any job, there are things that come up that are unexpected. I appreciated that Jim was invested in my job - he wanted me to be happy with the end result and was willing to work with me all the way through to the completion of the project. The finishing details on my project were tedious because of the design and some decisions that we had made. We used Durham Fence for our new DECK, and we are extremely happy with how it turned out. Our old deck was literally falling apart, so we called Durham for an estimate on a new one. Owner Jim came over and helped us plan out a new design, one that was a better fit for our yard and that would feature higher-quality (i.e. longer lasting) materials. Within 48 hours he gave us a thorough and thoughtful estimate, including a sample of the Trex composite material he'd use. (A nice touch which really helped us visualize what the deck would look like.) A deck is a big investment, and he was great about answering all our questions before we took the plunge. Jim's crew was great. They were expert craftsman, as well as extremely professional and friendly. From demolition to construction, it was all top-notch AAA work. They made phenomenal progress every day. Jim was often onsite, and always in contact. The final result? A deck that we love. We still can't believe it. We'd sum up Durham this way: superb quality and fantastic customer service. We couldn't be happier with how it turned out. We'd give them 7 or 8 stars if we could. My neighbors and I hired Jim to install two fences, which he did and they turned out fine. I needed another fence and gate installed so I emailed his website in January but I never heard from him. I called and left messages but didn't hear back. Finally in May I called him and he said that he was too busy to talk but would call me back, but he never did. Once he left a message on our machine saying that "he was in the area and could he come by?". I called him back and left another message but again never heard back from him. After trying for 6 months to get Jim to respond I gave up and hired another fence company who did the job in less than 3 days.
