I write this review after thinking about how we might need to replace another fence and I know exactly who to call. Scott and his crew did a fantastic job on our 200' fence! He was remarkably flexible and personable throughout the job, allowing us to delay decisions so that he could mock up visual options along the way. I can confidently say that our fence suits our needs much better than it would have based on our original plan. We have since had numerous compliments on our gorgeous new fence :-) We also were very happy with the price, which was almost identical to two other very reputable fence builders. read more

We got 3 quotes to replace ~60 ft of fence on a slope. It needed retaining wall of 18" to 4 ft at the bottom due to the slope and shape of the ground. Scott's was the lowest of the 3 quotes so we hired him. He did an amazing job. The fence looks terrific, and the retaining wall looks extremely strong, exactly what we needed to make sure the fence will last many years. The cost ended up being around 6-7% higher than the estimate, but he warned us about that ahead of time, and it was because of legitimate uncertainty about how much retaining wall he would need to build, not really knowing until he started the work. He's friendly and a pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended! We did have to wait about a month between signing the agreement and paying deposits, until he could do the work, but I don't think that's unusual and we weren't in a rush. read more

With Fencing did a most awesome job on my mom's backyard fence. Scott and his son have done some work in the past at my parent's place. They put up a fence with a new gate, it looked beautiful, my parent's were so pleased, so it was a no brainer on who to call when my mom needed some more work done on another part of her fence. My mom's yard is huge, she has many neighbors that needed to be contacted in order to get the fence put up, and also not to interrupt their day with construction, Scott was very accommodating to their needs. They cleaned up after themselves everyday, they showed up on time, and most important, my mom is very happy with the new fence, and won't have to worry about her fence coming down in any storms. read more

Very good experience overall. I inquired through the website and heard back from Scott within a day. Scott made an appointment to meet with us at our place. He arrived on time, spent enough time to look at the conditions. He sent me a quote within a few days. It took us approximately a month to get back to him and once we agreed to go with Withfencing, we sent him a 10% deposit. We agreed on a day to start the work a week later. They arrived on time and did the work within a few days. The team cleaned up nicely in the end. The crew was good and Scott was present on site to direct them. It took 2.5 days. Scott had predicted 2 day but we had a few conditions that needed a bit more attention so it ended up taking a few more hours. The fence looks good and is well done. Scott just did an outstanding job rebuilding an old fence, rebuilding part of our deck, and rebuilding a retaining wall. He did a great job and I would highly recommend him for any fencing, wooden wall work you need. You'll be lucky to get him to do the work, as he fixed everything he found unexpectedly along the way. When you have someone working at your house for 2 weeks, you see what kind of person they are -- and he is a good contractor and good for running his crew. Prior to hiring a contractor for your home, it's highly recommended that you get at least a couple of estimates so you understand the market, each contractor's skill sets and general price ranges and so you can pick someone you're comfortable with hiring. We are SO glad that we did just that because we 100%+ know that we are NOT HIRING this company for the reasons outlined below. UNRELIABLE First, this company is not reliable. I scheduled an appointment with Bob With, owner of With Fencing, for 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 12, 2013. In my conversation with Bob, I stated that it was very important that he arrive close to 10:30 a.m. because we were missing work and had to return to the office as soon as possible. Bob explicitly stated that he understood these simple instructions and would be at our home at around 10:30 a.m. After waiting for 40 minutes and not receiving any calls from Bob, we realized that Bob was a complete no show, and we left the house for work. RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL Second, Bob is extremely unprofessional and rude. I called him at 5:30 pm and inquired why he did not arrive nor call us to say he was cancelling our appointment. Instead of sincerely apologizing, Bob immediately put the blame on us! He went on the defensive and blamed ME for scheduling an appointment with him. He said he should not be held responsible for running late and not showing up. He said he tried calling. That's when I caught him in his lie-- he called 50 minutes AFTER our scheduled appointment! Not only was he trying to make poor excuses, but he was manipulating and misrepresenting the truth. During our call, he continued to raise his voice at me and made poor, unprofessional excuses. He said he had too many bids and simply did not have time to meet his obligations and appointment with us. I couldn't even get a word in because he literally went off on the phone. How is he still running a business? Moreover, the two passengers in my car were witnesses to our conversation (as I had him on speaker through my car). They were completely shocked at Bob's attitude and after the conversation ended, they said they could not take him (or his business) seriously. None of us will be hiring him for any contractor work. POOR BUSINESS PRACTICE Third, I am deeply disappointed by his demeanor and the way he runs his business. He was unapologetic and insincere. I cannot get past the fact that he blamed us and started going off about how busy he was and how customers should not expect him to give notice if he is not going to show up. I'm guessing he wasn't educated on common courtesy nor has he ever been held accountable for his actions. RECOMMENDATIONS I understand that With Fencing has a few 4 or 5 stars on Yelp, but please do give weight to the mediocre ratings on this Yelp page. After this recent experience, I would not recommend this business to any of my family, friends and colleagues. If you would like to go with other fencing companies, I recommend that you get estimates from: - M&L Construction; - McGibbon Construction; and - A-1 Fencing. If you have any questions, please let me know and feel free to send me a message. I would hate to know that a business like this could get away with mistreating customers. It is completely unacceptable and intolerable. Bob, if you are so inundated with bids, then you should be upfront with your potential customers and let them know that you're not able to accommodate them into your schedule. They did a nice job on a simple picket fence and tear-down of the old fence but when I decided I didn't like it he wouldn't work with me to change it. 5 stars for workmanship. 3 for quality of material. The beams were good but cheap pickets. 1 for price. I found out later we paid way too much. Be sure to get several quotes before going with them and be sure what type of fence you want. After getting used to its funny name, I've used With Fencing on three different projects and each time got great results. The first time I needed two wood retaining walls replaced and a new redwood fence to be constructed. I got two bids. The first guy took a week to fax his estimate to me and told me the project would take a week or more. With Fencing wrote an estimate on the spot and said it would take less than 2 days. The bid was about 10% more, but seemed like the right choice. Indeed, the work was done in one and a half days and looked great. My next projects were to replace on small deck and repair another. I am a contractor in the Bay Area. I used to build all my own fences, until I worked on a high end house in Burlingame and With fencing did the job. These guys are fast, reasonably priced, great quality and very professional! I have worked with them 20 plus times and they have always come through perfectly! In the construction world nothing is as easy as it seems and nothing will go perfectly every time, but these guys will see every job through until you are happy. We have had some pain in the ass customers over the years and Scott, Bobs son has handled them so professionally and with such grace. They have done a number of projects for me, both large (a huge redwood fence with lattice, gates, etc. surrounding a big house/property, including extensive custom work and small (small deck, a really cool storm door that Scott custom designed) and the quality of workmanship, price and genuine family-run business were so much different than any other contractor or fence company I have ever worked with. I had a great experience with the humorously named With Fencing. I called them the morning of Dec. 31 (New Year's Eve), asking for a consult on my front yard's picket fence. The fence was built too close to my driveway, and I used to hit it regularly when backing out. Because it had been hit so many times, the fence was falling over, looking sad and forlorn. The With Fencing guy came out to look at it that day, said it was an easy fix, and called his son to see if he could stop by and do the job the very same day. He did. Now the fence is standing tall and proud, and has been moved away from the driveway so I no longer hit it. The rep from With fencing came out to see the property,At that time I was told they would start three weeks from when they received the signed contract. Two days later I was sent an estimate I reviewed it signed it and sent it back via email. That same day I mailed a check for 10% and a hard copy of the estimate. I never heard from them again. No email, no phone call nothing until I call them at the three week mark and was told they couldn't give me a start date they are so backed up. I was on a list. These guys aren't that good. After looking at our fences, I would've gone with another service, even if I had to pay a little more money. Bob, the owner, is a forgetful guy who tries to make up prices on the spot mainly because he improperly measures the plans in the first place. Here are some other annoyances about With Fencing. 1) We had asked for the posts to built higher so we could put caps on top. When I noticed that the posts weren't being extended, I asked Bob and he was like, "oh, I forgot...well we could just extend the post by nailing another one on top". This would look terrible so we skipped it. 2) We had asked to build a gate along our back fence. They forgot of course and then tried to tell us it wasn't possible to put a gate in that spot. They eventually built a gate, which isn't integrated that well and now it sags a little. 3) We asked them to build a dog run fence to be 4' high so our dogs could not jump out. Since we have a sloped back yard, the fence was was going to be stepped down in sections. After completion, the fence in one section is about 4' high on the front end and on the back end is about 2.5' feet high. Our dogs can still jump out. 4) When constructing the posts, they do not use a continuous piece of wood. So, if you want need an 10' post, they use an 8' post and tack on a 2' piece on top of that, instead of cutting a 12' foot post down to size. Overall, the craftsmanship of their work is sub par. Some posts aren't cut level leaving gaps. Some posts aren't straight. I believe they try to get in and out as quickly (and cheaply as possible). Since Bob wasn't there on the last day, I withheld $500 from payment til I talked these issues over with Bob. He has yet to call me back. Some service. I would definitely not go with these guys again or refer them to anyone else. read more

I called and scheduled a quote, and an older guy arrived at our place at the scheduled time. He barely established eye contact, didn't introduce himself, and was very gruff. He grunted that I should hold one end of the measuring tape and had me help him measure all the fence areas--no big deal, but all other fencing companies were able to measure on their own. Left without saying a word, and I later got a quote in the mail with almost no details on it, and no follow up whatsoever. These guys must have to much business that they don't have to be professional when they come to give a quote. read more

It's a family business, so With Senior came out to do the estimate and came across as not so friendly, but his quote was very reasonable, so we hired them. Scheduling was easy, and they arrived on time. They were professional, efficient, and neat. I would have given 5 stars if not for bad accounting with 2 phone calls from With Senior and wife claiming that they never received our payment after they had already cashed our check! I don't believe they were dishonest--just bad at accounts receivable. They also could not get our name right even with name printed on the 2 checks we gave them. read more

Gosh these guys did a great, quick and reasonably priced job. Our fence was pretty straight forward - 6 foot tall redwood - but they built a solid retaining wall below it and addressed an awkward side fence situation next to it. I was nervous at the beginning and then saw the guys out there with their levels making sure each board was just right. One note, you get what you ask for. We just wanted a simple fence and we got it. I wish I had spent a little more time thinking through the framing and specifying the wood to use/layout/etc. Ultimately it looks good but I don't think I was prepared for the pressure treated framing. By the way, a friend who is a contractor suggested that we make sure the ends of all pressure treated wood is treated (otherwise it has no value in terms of preventing rot). With Fencing did that at our request, but I'm not sure that is standard procedure. Something to consider. Better yet, don't use pressure treated wood as that stuff is bad for the world. We were stuck with it already being there and figured, since it is there, we should make sure it served its purpose. read more

Needed a fence quote after my back fence fell over due to the severe winds we had experienced a few months ago. The receptionist I spoke with was not very helpful and I had to speak with the estimator himself to schedule my quote to meet with his schedule. Upon receiving the estimator's call he assumed that I didn't live in my house just because the area code I was calling from was different from the current county I live in (925 vs. 650). He was very short and curt over the phone. My husband waited at home to welcome the estimator to our house. My husband stated the estimator was rude and unprofessional as he was very quick and didn't shake hands with my husband as if he couldn't be bothered. Quote was decent but with the lack of professionalism, we decided not to enlist their services. I wouldn't recommend this place at all! Front desk and estimator didn't seem to impress my husband or me at all. Husband and I used to work in customer service jobs so we knew we deserved to be treated better and this company seemed to lack decent service. If I could, I wouldn't have this company a 1 star rating but instead a ZERO star rating! read more

We contacted several contractors to discuss our deck project. We went with With Fencing primarily because they said they could do the work within a week and because they were the first to respond with a quote. They did an amazing job! They arrived at the job on time each morning. They obviously have been working together for a long time. They were extremely well organized and efficient. It was like watching a well choreographed performance. Each person had a specific job which they did quickly and professionally. The deck they built was more beautiful than we had envisioned. We went with a high quality manufactured product for the floor and redwood for the railing. The redwood was from Beronio Lumber and was a nice red shade. The flooring of the deck was perfectly cut, predrilled, and spaced. It looks beautiful. When unexpected issues came up, i.e., a rotted window frame that got in the way of the deck, they dealt with it with ease and went the extra yard to take care of the problem. They also were open to small alterations in the design. We couldn't have been happier. I would highly recommend these guys. They know what they are doing and did a great job! read more

I highly recommend With Fencing. Several months ago, I called them to give us an estimate on repairing or replacing our fence. Scott came out to look at the job when I was at work. He called me and said that they actually built our fence 20+ years ago and he remembers doing the job with his dad. He said he had a picture of the job somewhere. By the time I got home, Scott had gone back to the office in Brisbane, found a color photo of this job from 20+ years ago, and left it for me in an envelope along with the estimate. I was impressed. I was also pleased that the fence didn't need to be replaced; it just needed a few repairs, which is a testament to With's workmanship. Fast forward a few months and I now have a crazy Vizsla-mix puppy who can jump the 4-foot fence and does so every chance she gets to go visit the neighbors. Because she could only get over on our side (the side with the railing), I was climbing over the fence 5+ times a day and hoisting a 45-pound dog over the fence and back into our yard. It was starting to get old (and realy starting to hurt my old-lady back). I emailed Scott to ask me what my options were. I didn't want to spend a lot of money. Scott told me what to buy at Home Depot and agreed to come out when he was next in the neighborhood and install redwood lattice fence toppers on top of the existing fence. These toppers add 18 inches of height to the fence and look fantastic. The puppy is NOT happy that she is now contained, but I am. Thank you, With Fencing! read more

Honest, fair, knowledgable, and reliable - With Fencing is all of these. We had them replace a horrible cinderblock retaining wall in our backyard with a redwood retaining wall. When Mr. With came out to give his estimate on the job, I described what I was looking for. He made both structural and cosmetic suggestions that were very clearly the right choices. He also was glad to break down the bid for me so that I could see how much of the cost was removal and how much was construction. We had a falling down, leaning down fence. They came out and said the fence was good, the posts were bad. They buttressed the posts, dug them down much deeper and actually cut the tops at an angle which aesthetically was great! Cleaned up the place and were careful of the plants and drips!
