This review is for the ease of dropping off donations at the drive thru drop off. I am constantly purging and have recently helped a couple of people clean out their houses. I absolutely love donating to the Durham Rescue Mission as they make it super easy and the donations go to a good cause. There is a drive thru bay in the back in which you just pull up and then a team of guys unload the car for you. They are always super nice and it could not be any easier. They'll even give you a tax receipt if you want. Highly recommend! read more

No welcome or pleasantries upon entering the store. Very huge thrift store with so much to offer. The clothing sizes are organized well. The items are hung in a way for easy inspection by customers. The store is clean and well-lit throughout for inspection of larger items for purchase. There are fitting rooms here. I didn't find much besides a book during my visit here. I overheard employees talking amongst themselves and one mentioned how they were sick and tired of the customers. Very inappropriate. Not sure what this was about. read more

Great - friendly place. What is really great about this thrift store is all the items are organized! You can look for clothing by size and and if you want women, men, boys or girl clothes. You can even find styles separately (dresses, skirts, suits, shorts and pants) They also sell furniture, kitchen wares, appliances and sometimes even a car! The Durham Rescue Mission is not only great place to find gems but it's also a great place to donate gently used items that are in good condition such as items around the house that you no longer need or have outgrown. I love dropping off things that I know could use a good home, instead of trashing them or going through the hassle of gifting (or selling) them on Marketplace or Craigslist, etc. The Durham Rescue Mission takes all sorts of items and with joy. The guys that collect the items are fast and efficient. If you do go there to drop off things, I will say, be mindful of what you drop off and be sure it's not total JUNK. If you're going to donate, think of items that would belong at the Thirft store, and do not use the Durham Rescue Mission as your dumping ground for tattered items or things don't work. It's not fair to them. They also have a sign that says something along the lines of "we have to pay per pound for junk removal (and it's expensive) so please be kind and don't bring your trash." It is not often that I take time out of my busy schedule to write a commendation letter for a store employee, but in this case, I find it imperative to do so on behalf of a Durham Rescue mission employee, Mr. Mario Frattura. His services and demeanor in the store, I rated as distinctive. He is a man that seems to be born for the job he does at the mission. He is very simple and easily approachable. The last time I had an issue with my purchase at the store, he listened to me without interruption and handled the issue without any fanfare. The best Durham Rescue Mission in the triangle (funny enough located in Raleigh though). It's huge, tons of variety and lots of good furniture options. If you're looking to upscale a old piece rather then two to three times the amount on something new, definitely come to this location. They accept Bull City Bucks, 75 bucks will get you 25% off and 150 bucks will get you 50% off, this can make a huge difference if you're buying furniture. What sets this DRM apart from the others is the size! The bigger the better people, you'll have to sort through things like always, so if you see this a more to sort through this might not be your stop, but if you see this as more to find, check out this location! Like at all thrift stores, you'll never know what you're going to find and Durham Rescue Missions run a little pricier then other thrift stores in the areas, but if you're willing to keep your mind open and take some time to look you could luck out! Always be careful what you're purchasing, like Michelle M. says, you can't check to see if electronics work and they do have all the board games taped up. This was my second time visiting and I can say it's definitely hit or miss. My sister-in-law loves it, so there has to be good stuff sometimes. Most of the furniture is kept outside which worries me. There was a gorgeous desk inside last time for $150 and this time it was outside for $75. I wanted it so badly but decided against it since we live on the third floor. I'm pretty new to thrifting so my rating may not be fair. I'm always talking to people who get great deals and stuff from thrift stores. I'm always fascinated when I see outfits put together so nicely for under $20. Soooo, I wanted to see if I could find good stuff too. This particular location seems like a furniture go-to spot. Most people there, were looking for large pieces for their homes. They had furniture both inside and out which concerns me. Not sure I'd want to buy wood furniture that's been sitting out but hey...someone will. I was there for the clothes and accessories and boy was there a lot to choose from. The unfortunate parts were: 1) I'm not really a rack shopper so I was overwhelmed by ALLLLLL the narrowly situated racks and 2) I believe a lot of the clothes were donated 20 years ago and are just now finding their way to the floor for sale because some of those styles I hadn't seen in years. I'll give thrifting a try again but maybe next time I'll go to a consignment store. read more

Went there today with my 17 year old daughter. A couple of men looked her over in such a rude way that I wouldn't let her out of my sight. She was wearing jeans and a sweatshirt - nothing that should have attracted any attention. One of the staff members also yelled at us for walking up the stairs. There was no sign or anything to prevent people from going there and it looked like there was more to see. There is a bunch of furniture outside as well as racks and racks of clothing. Wasn't sure if we were allowed to look at them or not. Overall an awful experience and we will not be returning. I gave it 2 stars because they have a big selection of stuff and I imagine that if you are willing to put up with being yelled at and ogled at, then you can find some deals. read more

I am a huge thrifter, I have been since 2002. I LOVE this store. I go up there every week now. Yesterday, 04/12/13 I got there about 8:00a I got a blazer, linen dress, and shirt all for .80 cents --yes you read that right...my total was .80 cents! There are about 5-6 bins outside and everything in it is a quarter, on the other side, everything out there is a dollar. Books are usually no more than 2 dollars. Everything is truly priced on the low end. Although I'm a thrifter, I'm a germ-o-phobe so clothes I buy that were outside I dry clean, regular clothes that were inside I wash myself, and books I sanitize with Lysol. This place is so amazing because everything goes back to the Durham Rescue Mission, google them, they truly support the community--unlike Goodwill, although I enjoy shopping there too; they've gotten so big they give their president and CEOs bonuses in the millions every year when that should be money for people in the community who need it. DRM is very active--they just has a Good Friday feast for those who were homeless/low incomed in the area. Many of the people who they are hire have been helped by the DRM and they have a hotel they renovated into a homeless shelter on 85North. Like I said...I love this place greatly! read more

HUGE thrift store. Nearly impossible to get through it all. I wouldn't bother looking through the women's clothing section unless you are interested in Walmart clothes from 1999. There were a few pieces with interesting prints from around the 80's but nothing of high quality. The book section is excellent. It is extremely well organized with a very large selection of fiction. The prices range from .99-2.00 depending on hardback or soft cover. You will easily be able to find almost any well known book written in the last 20 years, especially if there's a move about it. There are healthy sized sections for Travel, Gardening, Business, Nora Roberts fans, Stephen King Fans, Romance, and YA. The Science Fiction and Fantasy section is extremely lacking, consisting mostly of Star Wars and Star Trek books. Last week I got The Parable and the Sower by Octavia Butler, The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, and The Beach by Alex Garland. I did notice A LOT of furniture, dishes/glassware, vinyl, a few computers, and a lot of creepy toys and figurines. There's probably something for everyone. If you stay long enough you'll probably hear some hilarious exchanges between the staff and the oddball thrifters that frequent the store. Overall there's an incredible selection and it's worth stopping by. read more

This thrift store/warehouse is located the furthest North that I have driven on Glenwood so far. Not only is the retail space full of second hand items, but the perimeter is also stocked with a wide selection of sofas, bed, chairs, appliances, Christmas mishigas and clothes. Most of the furniture outside would be unusable in a home, meaning it was all broken and torn up looking. I found a mercury glass dish, a mason jar for my new collection and a lovely petinaed mint julep for my makeup brushed for only $1! There is a large selection of kitchen ware, old electronics and clothes. It would take a few hours to go through everything! The glass ware was well organized. Most of the inventory seemed circa 1980's and 1990's, not brand new and not truly vintage. Good amount of parking and clearly marked from the road. read more

My kids like going here to look through the books, but do NOT buy battery operated items here or at the other location! We paid 5.00 for a halloween witch only to get it home and find it didnt work. Same for an electronic learning game and a santa. (slow to learn for us I guess). that is a lot of money for something that doesnt work. son wanted a sesame street board game-price was 10.99!! NO WAY, so he got another character game. it was taped shut so we couldnt see what was inside. 3.99 but got it home to find it didnt have most of the pieces. So, we've been here several times and the kids have found some books they were happy with, we have lost a lot of money of things that dont work or are missing pieces. read more

I've been to two locations of this place in the last two days, both were great shopping experiences. The store, has a huge selection of goods at fantastic prices. There is enough staff around to help out, but not make you feel like you're being stalked. Great selection of loose toys, which is rare at thrift stores in this area it seems, and tons of books. I was in heaven. Nice wide aisles for the most part, which is nice when there are more than 1 customer in an aisle. I'll definitely check it out again next time I'm in town. read more

Shame on you Rescue Mission!! As a teacher I am always on the hunt for books and board Games since my 4th grade class has a "Board game day" twice per month. I thought it would be a good idea to purchase out of my own pocket many of these so we will have a new game every time. I bought about 15 games all of them priced over $4.99 and I thought that I was making a good buying decision...only to find out that more that 2/3 of them were missing parts and instructions or were simply put in the wrong box. WHAT A RIP OFF since the people here tape the boxes tight so you cannot even check the contents before buying! What a very shady business practice it's like "BAIT AND SWITCH". I felt CHEATED. Why not have a Volunteer at least check the contents first before grabbing customers money. Secondly I will NEVER buy anything from you again because this felt like a scam...Really? Donated games and toys are $5, $10. $15? How sad for the shoppers who don't know that they can pay the same or a few dollars more at Walmart and get some of these items brand new. One of my favorite thrift stores in the area. Like any TS, it is hit or miss, but I almost always find a few treasures. They have a ton of clothes, sometimes a little too crammed together to actually sort through but a high selection. They have lots of household goods and furniture, and just about everything else. The prices are usually good and if they are not some of the folks there can negotiate. All in all, a great thrift store filled with really nice employees.
