I tried the watermelon basil lemonade, which is the perfect drink for summer weather. It has a balance of sweet and refreshing flavors with real fruit for a decent price. I can attribute both of those to training issues, but there's also the matter of the topic of conversation very loudly being held by the employees, which kind of ruined the vibes.

The atmosphere was casual and had several customers who look like regulars. They were sitting at tables chatting together. The female staff member who helped me was very knowledgeable and friendly. She helped me make a selection since I hadn't visited the location before. I chose the oatmeal cookie smoothie which was delicious (sweetened with dates). Because I was a new customer, she kindly offered to let me try an aloe drink, a tea sample and my smoothie....complimentary as a new customer. That was very kind. Which is odd, considering that the smoothie had no issue with ratios and was very smooth. What really put me off about this location is the overall hostility that you get here. When I arrived, I sat down because I wanted to enjoy what I purchased before continuing on with my morning. But the cashier, who didn't spare me more than two words, put my bowl in a to go bag. This doesn't really make sense to begin with, given that it is served in a disposable cup regardless. There is also no bathroom, which is made obvious by this weird half wall to the back area. The setup makes it feel like Fruit Shack does not want you to stay, which makes it hard for me to want to come back.

The staff were super helpful, especially once we told them we hadn't been in before. I really appreciated the flexibility of being able to choose between house specialty bowls (which you can adjust as desired) or building your own from scratch. I also liked the variety of sizes: four options, ranging from small to quite large. The shop is clean, bright, and comfortable, with boppy music playing. It was a welcoming spot to sit and eat. Note: I was initially going to give Nautical Bowls four stars because it's casual counter service, but here's the thing I realized: they should be compared against their immediate peers (not, for example, a fine dining restaurant), and in that realm, they knock it out of the park!

I found an article online that listed Tucson's top smoothie places and this place came up. It's in a strip mall which is why I never noticed it before. I couldn't have been more surprised at what a fantastic experience this was given the hidden nature of this gem. First of all, I was super high-maintenance and wanted something that wasn't on the menu. They had a juice that I wanted to model it after, and then I also wanted to add all kinds of things. I was especially excited to see that some of their additional ingredients were organic, which is rare to find here in Tucson. I got the Green Goddess ingredients and added almond butter, almond milk, banana, flax seed, chia seed, and avocado. Not only was the person at the counter willing to entertain this mess of a creation, she pointed out that without the almond milk (which I had neglected to include originally), it would be too think. So she gave me the chance to add a liquid. In addition, she was concerned that it wasn't going to be sweet enough (I had originally not asked for banana), so she offered honey and when I mentioned that I wasn't really into added sugars in my smoothie, she suggested a fruit. Lastly, it turns out that they have an option for either plain chia seed or chia seed soaked in coconut water. Be still my heart!! I chose the latter since she gave me the choice. The place is very cute, they were playing good music, and even though most people were taking theirs to-go while I was there, I enjoyed sitting to sip my smoothie and relax for a while. The only thing I would possibly suggest for an improvement is to ditch the foam glasses for something that's recyclable. I didn't take any stars away because that's just me being a modern hippie about stuff and is a personal preference for the environment. If you can't tell, I LOVED this place and I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a smoothie or juice!
