This was for a total of 13 very small pieces, and they feel like Material/Box and Labor to pack is worth $43.80 and the Shipping charge is $38.35. I dont know when these auction companies decided that they would make shipping their big money maker. The strike fee was less profit than their overpriced shipping charges are going to net. All I have to say is if you are a bidder and want your stuff shipped expect to be gouged on the unknown side with the shipping charges. I wish they wouldn't feel the need to nickel and dime people out of more money and its getting to the point that I will just no longer bid on items because the added strike fees and insane shipping charges make the item no longer worth it.

Sunday evening, August 9, 2020, a close family member of mine purchased about $160-ish worth of merchandise (consisting of 16 or 18 different lots; if you aren't familiar with auction lingo a 'lot' is an individual item or very often a group of items) from one of Sharpless's online auctions. She's done this several times before. Everyone goes to bed Sunday night and all is well. The next afternoon, August 10, derecho 2020 hit eastern Iowa. Auction item(s) pickup was to happen on Monday, August 10 from 9am-6pm at the Sharpless Auctions facility on Herbert Hoover HWY in Iowa City. Here's where the situation goes south: much of eastern Iowa was without phone service, or the ability to gain internet access for several days. This also must have included the phone line(s) at Sharpless Auctions. It was late morning, Tuesday, August 11 before we spoke with anyone regarding the (since passed) auction pick-up date/time. Sharpless said that they understood my family member's situation, but they "still have a business to run" and gave us a deadline to pick-up the winning items that afternoon, or they could resell the items for us and send us a check. Because we were inundated with having to help multiple family members clear debris from their yards, driving from Cedar Rapids to Iowa City was not an option on the 10th or 11th. Sharpless did resell the items we bought. We ended up getting a check for less than $70. Ridiculous. Some of the lots we had purchased separately were shoved together in the new sale, and nearly all of the items sold for less than what we paid (totally understandable, but couldn't you at least keep the lots separated like they were originally?) To top it ALL off, Sharpless keeps a 30% commission. I think what irritated me the most was that Sharpless never even acknowledged the severity of the storm on 08/10. The next day, on 08/11, they made a post indicating they were pausing the 08/10 auction. Why? Because a huge part of their audience was without power and cell service. That was it. No heartfelt post to their customers who experienced such devastation. They never attempted to call us to find out where we were (it would have been noticeable that the amount of items we bought hadn't been picked up yet) or if we were going to make it at all. Had we not contacted them we would have just lost the money and the merchandise. So, when the employee said, "we still have a business to run" she wasn't kidding. There's no sympathy from anyone at Sharpless. They've lost a couple of customers who purchased from them regularly over the past few months. If you have the auction itch, I highly recommend searching elsewhere in eastern Iowa. There are several other very reputable auctioneers in the area.

They have always been extremely professional and polite. I have found how they set up and auction items either live or online exactly at or better then many of the other auction companies I buy from. They do sell a lot of new salvage items--in particular items that were once sold at Target. It's pretty interesting to see how much something originally sold for given that you spend a whopping $3 on an entire box of the stuff by the time Hoge is selling it. Yes, deals are that good. Sorry to say, but I really overspent on my most recent purchase. All items were more used than I expected and my largest item doesn't work. Due to the quality of the photography and the fact that merchandise is untested, I didn't know that before bidding. When it comes to photography and merchandise descriptions, both are severely lacking. I just don't think they have the time to be detailed given how often they're hosting auctions. It seems to be quantity over quality at times. If you don't mind taking a gamble and you are looking for some good deals without having to leave your house, give Hoge a try. Be prepared to pick-up your wins in Coggon on specified days and during specified times. Overall 4/5. One (wo)man's trash is another (wo)man's treasure.

I drove 400 miles to attend a toy auction because they don't do online bidding. That's peeve number 1, no online bids. As I sat in the auction barn, I thought they would turn the heat on at some point. It was only 40 outside and maybe 50 inside. That's peeve number 2. The biggest peeve to over look was the statement from the auctioneer that regardless of weather conditions over night, the 2nd part of the auction will begin at 9 am sharp. The was a snow storm that passed though overnight. When I arrived at 845, they placed a handwritten note stating auction starts at 10. Don't make the statement that regardless or weather you will start on time and then start late. That's tough to trust and auction service that can't keep their word. 2 rules in farm toys, 1. Don't move the place and 2. Don't move the time. They broke rule 2.
