I strongly caution anyone considering this office. I scheduled a root canal consultation and 3D scan over the phone, provided my insurance information, and was asked to arrive 20 minutes early to discuss details. Upon arrival, the front desk staff were visibly distracted -- chatting and laughing among themselves -- and barely acknowledged me. I had to stand up multiple times to ensure I hadn't been forgotten. No one communicated an estimated wait time, and after 40 minutes, someone finally brought me to the back. Dr. Higgins briefly examined my mouth and recommended a 3D scan. I asked about the cost before proceeding -- both he and the assisting nurse failed to answer. After the scan, I was placed in a treatment room where a staff member, Sandy, presented me with a tablet to sign for nearly $2,000 in charges -- without Dr. Higgins having reviewed the scan with me or discussed any treatment plan. When I expressed concern and asked to speak with the doctor, Sandy appeared annoyed but left to retrieve him -- only to return alone and hand me the tablet to sign again. I refused to sign. Dr. Higgins eventually came in. I asked to review the scan together and hear his clinical assessment. He was unable to pull up the scan on the in-room computer where the root canal would've taken place and had to seat me in an outside chair to view it. The actual consultation lasted approximately five minutes. When I asked about next steps -- specifically the cost of a crown, which I learned would be performed by a separate dentist, Dr. Paek -- Sandy initially told me she couldn't provide that figure because it wasn't currently on my dental plan. Only after I pushed back did she produce a total: nearly $4,000. I asked to speak directly with Dr. Paek to discuss the crown before making any decisions. Sandy assured me I could, and had a nurse escort me to the front desk. There, three staff members sat in front of their computers staring at the schedule screen -- no movement, no eye contact, no acknowledgment as I approached and spoke to them. I paid the $385 I was told covered both the consultation and the 3D scan, and was informed the scan would be shared with me digitally. When I asked about speaking with Dr. Paek, I was told he was with a patient. I said I was happy to wait, and one of the front desk assistants -- without looking up -- told me flatly that he would be busy for an hour and a half. I left without having spoken with him. About an hour after leaving, I received an email stating the office had "graciously waived" the $250 3D scan fee -- implying I still owed it. When I returned to clarify, I learned that the $385 is a standard consultation fee alone for Dr Higgins, and the $250 is a separate, additional charge for the scan -- the opposite of what I had been told at checkout and I could've had this cost before any consultation and scan was done, and would've chosen not to do it. The lack of upfront cost transparency, the pressure to sign financial agreements before any clinical discussion had taken place, and the consistently dismissive attitude toward a patient's reasonable questions were deeply concerning. At every touchpoint -- from the front desk, to the treatment room, to checkout -- staff showed little regard for clear communication or basic courtesy. This office does not appear to prioritize patient trust or experience. I do not recommend it.

Initially, they gave me an opening for 3 days away, but when I explained the situation they made room for me in only 5 hours. I was greeted kindly as I entered on my first visit and offered free water (they don't have to, but it's nice!) and was seen within 5 min (make sure you fill out the online form before the first visit for quick service). I was treated so well, from beginning to end, with an understanding of my pain and making sure I was comfortable throughout the process. They are quite high-tech, which makes it all feel so effortless and efficient, while getting such detailed scans and X-rays as well as a full cleaning. Dr. T explains what needs to be done very clearly and gives you the attention you deserve and plenty of time to think and ask questions while laying out a thoughtful plan. At the end, Jesse further explained the roadmap ahead and stopped frequently to make sure I was understanding everything while standing side-by-side, showing me on-screen how the plan breaks down and what's out-of-pocket versus what your insurance will cover. All in all, I am quite pleased with my experience and am looking forward to taking action. Thank you to the whole staff there and I'll be seeing everyone again soon.

I was not shown my x-rays before the deep cleaning was done, lack of transparency. I wish I would have known and evaluated my options. I had a horrible failed root canal that led to 7 years of not seeing a dentist. Teeth were breaking, rotting, but they were in the back where no one could see. In February, one of my small front teeth developed a hole, it kept getting bigger. I finally got the courage to walk into Charming Smile Dental. I even made another appointment for the next day somewhere else incase I didn't feel okay. Let me tell you, Dr. Singal let me talk about all of my fears and anxiety, I cried and she held my hand. There was no judgement here, we just have to work towards a solution. By the end of the appointment we had done half of a deep clean & I was coming back the next day to finish. I cancelled my other appointment and kept going with Dr. Singal. It's been 4 months and we have tackled, a deep cleaning, 6 fillings, 3 root canals (from a specialist referral, they were also fantastic. No pain!) Now 3 fillings & 3 crowns. I have a new smile and a new life. If you are fearful of the dentist I am telling you to come here. She has helped me get my life back and there is no review long enough that could express that. Do not wait any longer!

When we started going to Lumia dental, we were extremely pleased with how friendly and competent…read morethey were. It was an added bonus that this was a female owned and run company (of which alas they are still way too few nowadays). Their patient care is excellent and as far as any dental work is concerned, I would highly recommend them. However, as their business grew and expanded, I was starting to worry about what this would mean for their patients. My worries did eventually come true: from a patient based practice, it turned more into a corporate business, and with it, the desire/need for higher profits. As a result, they decided to no longer accept our insurance (Guardian dental, a major dental insurance company) because, according to them, their low fee schedule did not allow them to provide the best care for their patients. Now, that latter is just rethoric, for they were doing an excellent job. Why would that need to stop? No, it was because Guardians fee schedule did not make them enough profit. The way it works is as follows: a dental practice can determine its own fees for various procedures. An insurance company, through collective bargaining, can then negotiate for a reduced schedule for their clients (depending on the local competition). So, accepting an insurance first and foremost means to agree to the collectively bargained fees. While getting less profit, it means a much larger potential client base. This is the power of collective bargaining (which would be so much more effective if health care in the US would be universal, like it is in many other countries and, as a result, also much affordable). For Lumia, however, loyalty to their patients was not deemed as important as getting more profit (perhaps because of the increased costs of having expanded the business) and so they dropped Guardian as one of the accepted insurances. To give one example: our insurance pays the full fee for a cleaning every 4 months. However, they now raised their fee for a cleaning, making us having to pay more than $100 for something that was previously free. And you can guess that with more involved procedures, the out-of-pocket costs gets up even higher. That is why we had to leave Lumia as clients---essentially being pushed out as not being affluent enough clients that do not mind paying much more than they used to---and we now found an equally competent dental clinic in the neighborhood which does accept our insurance. I can only assume that we will not be the only patients leaving the practice, and in the long run, this might seriously damage Lumia (unless they can find enough wealthy clients in the downtown area).

The second attempt and I waited for an hour and a half in the office when they came in and asked me if I'd like to reschedule or "wait for the scanner to be fixed"? Really? Add to the mess the rudest, most dismissive office manager I've ever encountered. She wouldn't return my calls and when I finally spoke with her she spent the time loudly talking over me. She was fixated on repeatedly letting me know all conversations are recorded therefore wouldn't listen to my timeline of events. A recorded phone call isn't the full picture and as a manager you should want to know where and how the ball was dropped. Two and a half weeks later and my dentist didn't receive the report, I didn't receive a receipt for the money I paid until I reached out to ask for it (even though I was told it would be sent digitally). I received a breakdown from my insurance stating I owed an additional $200 plus dollars. My dentist had to call them to get that waived. I had no issue with the doctor, she was pleasant and professional. The management is beyond lacking, sloppy and unprofessional. I'm sure there will be a lame response from them citing a miscommunication- save it.
