An amazing stylist, LaLa, who listened to what I wanted (I came with photo on my phone of exactly my vision of what I wanted) and then astutely reminded me that perhaps it was no who I was and the fact that I did not like to blow dry or curl my hair every day to get that look in the photo was probably not realistic. I discovered Dye Pretty through Groupon. I was considering chopping my hair toward a Locks of Love donation. I'd been lugging around my long mop for about 3 summers and was at the point where I was sick of the sight of it. One of the deal options was for a single process hair color. The salon is called Dye Pretty after all! I decided I would treat myself since I had done my best to keep my hair as virgin as possible for a suitable donation and in doing so, my hair was quite salt and peppered. After perusing the reviews and studying her work via the photos provided on yelp, I decided to give La-La a try. I'm not emotionally tied to my hair whatsoever; it grows like a weed and has 2 styles. Long and layered or short and layered. Before a big event in Oakland, I decided to go in for my cut/color. First off, the location is in a trendy part of Sierra Madre. There is a private lot to park in and you can enter through the front. Go directly up the leopard print steps. Down the hall and to the left, first door on the right, you will see the sign for Dye Pretty. And La-La in all her hot pink mohawk glory, but do not be deceived by her looks. She can rock a solid cut for all styles. To be completely honest, I wanted to go edgy and it was the photo with the "Different is Beautiful" sign that sold me. I had been messaging La-La a bit before my appointment. I had always wanted to try balayage and it was only a $5 difference from the single process color. I asked her if I could possibly get the balayage and just pay the difference. La-La was very accommodating. When I finally arrived for my appointment, I was greeted very warmly. I liked that her station was in a private room. It made me feel more at ease. I was early, but I helped myself to some coffee and a slice of pound cake. Before I could even finish my coffee, she escorted me back to her station. We talked at length about what I wanted done. I had told her about wanting to chop at least 10" off. I told her that I was completely in her hands and that she could do anything with my hair, which made her squeal. We discussed color and I told her that I had always wanted to go with red and that purple was my favorite. She was excited, which made me really excited. She showed me the shades she was thinking would look great and I gave her the green light. We settled on highlights of violet and red with an all over purple. La-La spent a good 4 hours working on my hair. I believe I ended up paying a little more than what we had previously discussed. She did give me a few highlights and that probably cost more than the balayage price. It didn't matter much because when I left, I felt like a million bucks. 2 days later, (I tried to go as long as I possibly could to keep my hair styled the way La-La had it) I had to wash my hair. I used Organix shampoo and conditioner; a sulfate-free, cruelty-free brand that I thought would be gentle enough for my hair. I was horrified when I saw how much color bled onto the white hotel towels. I looked in the mirror and noticed that the once vivid purple highlights were showing brass-y bleach underneath. I was so upset at myself for washing it. A little over a week from my appointment, I get a text from La-La, asking how I was and if I was still happy with my 'do. I was conflicted on how to respond. I finally decided just to be honest. To my amazement, she too was horrified and asked if she could touch me up at my convenience. On the second visit, we went with a burgundy. I left happy. And left with two bottles of recommended shampoo/conditioner for colored hair. I have to admit that I couldn't fully appreciate the cut until I got a Japanese hair straightening treatment. The cut of my hair is truly where the artistry is. Yes, La-La knows her color like nobody's business, but it's temporary and will eventually fade. The cut is the part that lasts. Oh, and how funny is this? La-La informed me that I actually have a heart-shaped face and not a round one (like I had always been told) Because of this new information, I was able to go a different route with my glasses shape. I've been coming to see Lala for a year, and am super happy with her! She gives valuable advice yet isn't overly pushy about what she wants. She truly takes her customers desires into consideration and wants to make them happy. When I first went to her, my hair was colored pink & purple from a previous modeling gig, and Lala carefully brought it to an even toned light blonde. We threw in a temporary lilac later when I got board, and she again evened it out when needed, protecting the integrity best she could despite all the processing it's gone through. Recently I had a Demi Permanent conditioning treatment in between root touch ups, and I'm so pleased with the results! If you color your hair often or have courser hair, I strongly recommend this! As you can see I'm super happy with her and have started adding additional services to my color, like conditioning treatments & lip wax. My lip wax was at the demi permanent conditioning appt & I didn't get ANY red bumps I normally do when waxed. Very gentle. Her prices are reasonable & to top it all off she's a super cool person! I've been following La-La around for the last couple of years or so and I still love having her do my hair. She does an awesome job and she's so open and easy to talk to, it's awesome. It's funny because La-La and I are like complete opposites. I'm the conservative, business attire wearing, introvert and she's...well...she's not! She's awesomely extroverted which makes her easy to talk to and allows her creativity to flow. She may do a lot of awesome crazy dye jobs but she can definitely do an awesome job with color and cut for those of us in an office setting as well. She's extremely accommodating, often times staying a little later for me and she very much just goes with the flow.
