A close friend raves about this spa and I was excited to check it out. Located in the beautiful Sierra Madre village. Ample parking in the free lot across the street. At the beginning of my treatment Andrea asked about my skin care worries and goals, then worked magic for what felt like hours. My crystal glow facial with microdermabrasion left my skin feeling refreshed, hydrated and pampered. The lymphatic drainage massage was incredible and my face looks less puffy because of it. At checkout I asked what products she'd recommend and she was incredibly knowledgeable about each item and guided me towards one that'd be tailed for my needs. If I could give this review 1 million stars, I would! I had the best experience with Butterfly Effect Day Spa and my aesthetician Sarah. She was so sweet and I felt super comfortable. The spa's vibe is calming and light. I instantly felt safe and relaxed as I typically spend 90% of my day as a frazzled mom of two toddlers. The prices are really great and I was able to get a facial, eyebrow lamination, eyelash tint and lift all at once. This was my first time doing the eyebrow lamination and eyelash tint and lift, and I am super impressed. I felt refreshed and confident leaving the spa after my treatment. I came here because I bought a $30 Groupon for a facial. Originally $70 when I bought the Groupon but they hiked the price to $80 when I went for my visit. I also added a massage for 30% off if booked on the same day. Arranging the appointment was a little crazy because their business hours close early (6PM during the week and they are closed Sundays and Mondays). Availability was also limited because the Groupon was expiring soon. My first scheduled appointment had to be rescheduled because the aesthetician got sick. I spoke with Elkie (sp?) a couple times and she was very friend and tried to accommodate me on the day I wanted to go. I finally went this past Friday and had a refreshing and relaxing experience. I got there early and I was offered tea, they also had cookies in the waiting area. A little after my appointment time I was greeted by Rita who did my facial. The facials here are custom depending on your skin type and they use all organic products. Rita was never harsh during the facial, even through the extractions. She doesn't use an extraction tool which make it all the more painful. After that was over she used a couple scrubs and lotions that had wonderful scents. It was very calming and I even fell asleep for a couple of minutes. She woke me up when it was done and told me Gina my masseuse would be in soon and that I needed to just remove my top. I thought that was a little strange for a massage but I did it anyway. Gina was great throughout the massage and she worked on all the knots I had on my back. One complaint I had was that Gina's shoes made some noise on the hardwood floors while she was moving around. Then after that I started to hear the ticking of the clock and it wouldn't go away! Even the soothing music they played couldn't drown out the ticking. The only good thing was that I noticed it when my massage was almost done. It definitely would have ruined the massage if I heard it from the beginning. Overall I had a good experience. They also didn't push their product on me before I left, always a good sign. Total spent minus tip was $86. Even though they raised the prices that was still a good deal. If I lived closer I'd come back. FYI: This area is a dead zone for AT&T! read more

I've been to this spa twice for a facial with Elisa. Both times have been amazing. I went today and it was a relaxing experience, and my skin looked and felt great afterwards. I also liked the smell of the facial products, and they don't try to force product on you like so many places do. I liked how Elisa gives me feedback on how I am doing with my skin regimen and how she offered suggestions for balance. The spa room is also clean and the facial bed was comfortable. My eyelashes always look Amazing. I get compliments everywhere I go about how pretty and natural my lashes look. I wouldn't go anywhere else. I love that I can go out without makeup and feel like I look good. It's been one of the best things I have ever done for myself. I bought a Groupon for eyebrow and Brazilian waxing service with Andrea Guerrero at Butterfly Effect Day Spa. The spa is nice and welcoming and parking is great. Andrea has a wonderful friendly way about her and did an excellent job with my eyebrows. She explained the important basics of eyebrow shaping and I'm sure that will continue to be helpful. Why only 2 stars? The Brazilian wax. Once I got home and showered it was apparent just how much hair still remained. I'm not sure whether she was rushed because she had another client waiting, but the results were disappointing. After all the time and pain, I kind of wanted to be smooth as I've been after wax services I've had at other salons. I would definitely return for my eyebrows. WOW. This place rocks. I got a great deal from Groupon for a facial and decided to add on a massage (it's 30% off if you book another service on the same day, so the massage was $49). Rita did my facial and it was awesome. She was really sweet and thorough. She did some much needed extractions (ouch) and my face felt amazing after. Kim was my massage therapist and she was SO sweet. I was already pretty relaxed from my facial and with Kim's magic hands, I was asleep within the first 20-30 minutes. I tried so hard to stay awake to enjoy the massage but I just knocked out. I loved that I was able to stay in the same room for both services and the bed was nice and warm the entire time. I love this place! I wish I had more money so I could visit more often. I will be definitely saving up for a massage or facial in the future. They have "membership plan" thingy where it's $59 per month for 1 facial or 1 massage. I'm not sure if you have to pay up front for a year or what. But it sounds fantastical. read more

I had been putting off getting my eyebrows waxed for about a month, because I was looking for a new salon or spa. The only place I've had good results at is Angel's Touch in Temple City, but it's so far out of my way now that I never seem to make it. Other nail salons and day spas closer to home have offered various results, and I haven't left completely satisfied. Last weekend while doing my laundry I noticed a new spa in the same complex as the laundromat. I decided to poke my head in to see if they would be able to take care of me that day. I spoke with Rita, the owner, who said she would be able to help me in 15 minutes. I went back to the laundromat, finished folding my clothes and came back to Butterfly Effect. So glad I did! Rita informed me that she had just opened the spa three weeks ago after working as an independent contractor at another salon for years. The new space she has in Sierra Madre is very relaxing with hardwood floors, soothing music and beautiful rooms. She led me to a heated massage table (very nice on that cold rainy day!) and asked me how I would like my eyebrows done. Then she began, explaining everything she was doing. I was VERY happy with the results -- My eyebrows have honestly never looked better, and it was such a treat to get them done in such a relaxing environment. The price was very reasonable. Butterfly Effect also offers massages, and while waiting to get my eyebrows done I heard another client say it was the "best massage" he has ever had -- So I'm definitely going to have to try out those services! I'd also like to get a facial there sometime. Other pluses: Parking lot (important since I can't parallel park!). And if you're a local apartment dweller like me, you can do your laundry at the same time. I would definitely recommend this spa, and I will be going back. I love Butterfly Effect. My amazing boyfriend purchased a spa and wellness gift card for me and luckily, Butterfly Effect is on the list of salons that accept them. Making an appointment was a breeze (FYI, you can call or book appointments online), I cannot recall who I spoke with but they were very polite and answered all of my questions. The salon is so cute, it's quaint and welcoming. Upon arrival I was greeted by Rita (the owner), she is very sweet, she confirmed the details of my appointment with me, told me who I would be giving me my massage, asked if I would like to use the restroom first and provided ice cold cucumber water while I waited for the masseuse. Shortly thereafter, the masseuse walked out, she introduced herself (her name is Gina), and Rita told me that she hoped I would enjoy myself. Gina spoke with me for a few minutes - she asked about what I do for a living, if I am or if I ever experience any pain in a specific area, and what type of pressure would like during my massage. I chose the 55 minute Integrated massage which Gina elaborated on the specifics of the massage and then left me for a few minutes so that I could disrobe. The massage was nothing short of AMAZING. Gina is a true professional and takes pride in her work. I will be back to see her again shortly - next time for their 85 minute massage! I made my 2nd appointment for eyebrow sculpting. I had been letting my eyebrows grow out for quite sometime (I had a few "mishaps" with eyebrow waxing in the past that left me with little to no eyebrows). I had my appointment with Michelle- another true professional. My eyebrows look fantastic. I came in with uneven, shapeless brows and could not have been happier when I left. She asked what my preferences were and met them. The wax was basically painless, she measured and even taught me how to fill in my brows with a little bit of pencil, powder and highlighter. I am booking my next appointment with Michelle after I write this review. Righ now my big dillema is whether or not I should splurge and if so, am I going to book another massage or try some eyelash extensions for the first time (everybody whom I've met there has them and they look beautiful). read more

my oh-so-sweet sister got me facial appointment here just because, and I'm so glad she did! Aside from it taking 30 minutes for me just to get here, the time I spent inside was well worth it. When I first got in, I was greeted by the receptionist (Elkie, i think), Rita the owner and the lady who did my facial, Angela. I came here two weeks ago for a facial and massage. The spa is clean and Elkie the receptionist was super nice when she greeted me. They have tea and cake in their waiting area. Gina was my massage therapist and she was great! Before we started she asked me where I would like for her to focus. She also asked me what kind of work I do and when she learned I type a lot she made sure to focus on my hands and fingers. I enjoyed her massage alot and she even brought an extra heater when I told her I was cold. Salua did my facial. The facial wasn't bad but I wish she had spent some time analyzing my skin and making suggestions. I felt like she just jumped in which made me a little uncomfortable. I have acne prone skin and it can be sensitive to certain products. They use Eminence products, one of the few my skin actually enjoys. She did make my skin glow and I received several compliments. Like I said, the only thing was that I felt there was a bit of a lack in communication. The paraffin treatment was great and left my hands feeling very soft. Overall, I enjoyed my experience and will definitely be back. Also, my mom went today on my recommendation and she had Mari do her facial and LOVED it so maybe I'll try her out next time. I'm a very experienced spa-goer and I purposely book business meetings in San Gabriel Valley just so I have an excuse to come in for a treatment. I come monthly for lash extensions, which are really natural-looking. They never look clumpy or over the top, but are really worth it for those who have pathetically stumpy lashes like I do it. They make a huge difference in emphasizing my eyes in pictures. I've splurged on the occassional facial, and recently a massage. They seem to only hire very good people because every service has been high-quality and comparable to the fancy spas. The spa has a very inviting, tranquil vibe to it...exactly what you'd expect when you're going for pampering. I followed Allison over from her last place and instantly I was impressed! Free parking in the lot or on the street. The place is tucked away in the corner. Great ambiance too. Serene, cozy and private. Allison takes care of me just as she always does. I was very apprehensive at first about getting waxed because I've had really horrible experiences with other estheticians-from breakouts to burns. My skin is sensitive so it'll flare up like crazy and then break out in tiny pimples a couple days later. This has NEVER happened with Allison and now I won't trust ANYONE else to wax me. She's very quick and efficient and the experience is relatively painless. Her facials are also AMAZING. My first facial was with her so I had tons of questions. I knew from the get go she knew what she was doing when I saw that she used only the blue wax. Process was nearly pain free and she did an excellent job de-fuzzing me. I'll be a regular of hers from now on. FYI. The salon is a bit hidden from the street, and it's a little hard to tell where the parking lot is...but it's really no biggie. The salon smells wonderful and the front desk girls were very polite and friendly, offering me water is soon as walked in. The salon itself is quite clean, which I find super important. I got the BEST mani & pedi here from Olivia! I cant believe how long it's lasted - my nails look as good now as they did 3 weeks ago when she painted them! Well worth the price I paid (which was full price). I would prefer to have my nails done in this relaxing atmosphere over those noisy, chemical-smelling nail places that tout $25 acrylic nails, ANY DAY. Olivia is a real pro with years of experience, specializing in "natural nails" but is licensed to provide a variety of other services as well. I'm hoping to book her to do my facial in a few weeks, as well as for lash extentions because her lashes look AWESOME. Butterfly Effect is a hidden treasure in this upscale Altadena neighborhood. Prices here are very reasonable and the spa itself is very cozy & relaxing. I could easily spend all day here just getting services! I didn't know this spa had a Groupon out until I happened to see a client paying with one while I was there, and after having several expensive services, she tipped one of the poor gals a meager $5! I had the facial by Rita a few weeks ago and the massage by Gina... omg.... amazing! Rita was AMAZING at extractions (it has been a few weeks and my skin is still glowing) and Gina got the biggest knots out of my back (FYI... my ex was a massage therapist and she was MUCH better than him and he was good) . I'm definitely glad I went and will be going back again. I especially liked how cozy the place was, the ceiling is a nice shade of wood. Kim's massages are the best. Her "bedside manner" is perfect for me - she's very relaxing and professional; she'll make you feel comfortable and explain why she's working the areas she is. She's especially experienced working with athletes (like me) and has really helped me before (and after) big races. I also really liked that she took her time and wasn't watching the clock to get me out of there. I really think this is the best sports massage you can get for such a reasonable price. I know she also does more traditional massages too - so you just have to ask for what you want. I don't know much about the other spa services offered there, but the location is great (good parking, quiet) and the salon is really calming and comfortable inside. read more

Oh my goodness! I had a facial today with Alexandria and it was "hands down" the best facial I've ever had! Alexandria truly is an expert and professional in skin care. She mixed up a cocktail or cleansers, masks and moisturizers for my oily, mature skin. I was so relaxed that I drifted off a couple of times!
