This place blew all my expectations out of the water. The slacks had a raw hem and they ended up adding cloth to keep the length. They were so beautifully done I couldn't stop looking at them. I needed to have a button re-sewn onto a pair of pants. I also considered having the pants tailored, but asked for an expert opinion from the shopkeeper and was told it wasn't really worth the $30. So I have this awesome jacket that is really special to me. I bought it at Value Village Thrift Store back in 1985 or so and I paid around $9.99 for it. Whenever I wear it into vintage shops, I am the envy of the proprietors and I've even had an offer of a $100.00 once to sell it off my back. The jacket did not fit me - in fact it was extremely huge on me. But here's why it's special: the jacket has a man's name and the date October 26, 1973, embroidered on the inside pockets. I was curious about that so one day I looked up the guy in the phone book and I found him! He was happy that I called and we talked about the jacket and how he had it specially made for him in Hong Kong for his honeymoon cruise and that his bride had a long gown made out of the same fabric. If you look at the photo of the crazy jacket, I'm sure you can just imagine what a sight they must have been! Fast forward almost 40 years and I am finally ready for the jacket to fit me properly. I thought of taking it to Well Suited and having my usual tailor do the alteration but he is so booked I knew it would take forever and I needed it sooner rather than later. I took the jacket to European Master Tailor Sylvain and he told me that because of the huge size of the jacket, it would be impossible to alter it and he couldn't help me. I should have gone straight to DZ Alteration in the first place. The second I walked in the door, I am "Baby!", so cute! But everyone is baby there. I liked her confidence. No hesitation, she told me she could do it but that it would be expensive because the jacket would have to be deconstructed. If you think $60.00 for work of this kind is expensive, then OK. I think it is very reasonable. She had my jacket ready for me in less than a week and it fits! Baby loves her new crazy tuxedo jacket and baby has a new tailor. No one contacted me in between visits to express doubt about whether or not it could get done and when I showed up they gave me my pants that don't fit back without even washing the chalk marks off. I had a dress altered here a few years ago and had a great experience, but when I recently took a jumpsuit and a pair of pants (both for events for my wedding), I had a terrible experience. They said the alterations would be done on Saturday, I called to make sure they were ready and they couldn't find my items for over 45 minutes. When they found them, they hadn't been worked on at all. When I went in on Monday to pick the items up, the jumpsuit was hemmed way too short (which I pointed out to her twice when she was pinning it and told her I wanted it longer). The waist on the jumpsuit wasn't taken in enough and when I asked her to take it in more, she refused and poked my side and said it would make my fat roll over the band. On the other pair of pants that the waist was taken in, there was weird pointy puckering on my butt from the darts. When I went back again on Tuesday, they had let the hem out of the jumpsuit as much as they could and it was still too short. She asked if it was ok and I said no, it's still too short, she shrugged and said there was nothing else she could do. The pants still had a weird puckering on the butt and I asked her again if she could fix it, which she attempted to fix while I waited, but they still look terrible. When she returned the pants to me, there were stains on them, as well as multiple pulls in the fabric, creating runs down the pants. When I showed her the stains on the pants, she insisted that she didn't do that and she takes good care of every garment (didn't you lose my garments for 45 minutes?) then walked away, got $40 in cash and tossed it at me and said it was to cover the dry cleaning cost. Super disappointed by the quality of the work and the attitude of the staff. read more

I'll summarize this simply so you know what you're in for. Who knows, maybe I'll get a Useful check on Yelp. First, the rating is at least four stars, five might be too much but that's just in my opinion, and all the people giving a one or two star rating are just angry. Next, they have the best deals in town. I had a shirt fixed for $5, a jacket altered for $10, and a sweater altered for free. The free sweater alteration was because they couldn't find it for a day or two, but hey well worth it for me. They accept cash, not credit card or debit cards, so just give them cash. I know weddings can be stressful people -but- if you have the alternations dropped out off a month before maybe you wouldn't be so stressed and overwhelmed? Give an extra week before when you need them, simple. Overall, DZ Alterations is the best deal in town but they are always a few days behind. So...if you don't mind that, you are willing to pay cash, and you want a great deal go to them. If not, maybe somewhere else would would suit you better. read more

The best, hands down. DZ used to be in charge of alterations for a large corporate brand store in a previous life, then went on her own to open this shop over a decade ago (or more, possibly!) She is recommended by peeps from all walks of life: from everyday joes like me to local fashion gurus. She has done suits, blazers, chinos and jeans for me in the past and her pricing is always fair. One time I had a blazer with an intricate stitch around the cuff buttons that I needed altered. DZ would not just cut and tuck like others because she knew it would ruin the stitch. Instead, she made a perfectly angled cut around the wrist/forearm; removed the extra length and reattached the piece so the stitch was kept intact. No amateur hour here! Maybe sometimes chaotic when they busy, but keep your receipt/order number and you'll be fine. Trust me, it's worth it. read more

Price of Service: 4/5 This is the only alteration shop I've visited in Portland and it seems affordable to me. Jeans run about $10 and the chiffon dress was $35. Since I don't have other stores for comparison, but I've read other Yelp reviews saying there are more affordable shops, I'll do 4 out of 5 stars, rather than 5 out of 5. Customer Service: 4/5 Of the 10 or so times I've dropped off jobs, all of them have been ready when originally quoted. One job I needed within 24 hours and that was accomplished, no problem. The ladies can come across as slightly abrasive, but I think it's just a cultural difference. English is a second language so they speak with fewer words. Accents also make their speech sound harsh. I would probably sound curt if I were a business owner trying to speak a second language to a native speaker. That said, I'm sure their body language could help fill in the gaps. Extras: 0/5 Parking along the street in downtown Portland is difficult, especially during the day! Also, they only accept cash or checks. With PayPal, Register, and other mobile apps that accept credit card payments, the business should adapt to changing times. Lastly, they close at 6 PM. I have been going to DZ for over a decade: she tailored my wedding dress, my maternity pants, my daughter's clothes, and even a stuffed animal that needed some complicated repairs. Not only has everything has been PERFECTLY tailored, but everyone gives such good feedback on how and what to tailor - especially with dresses and more complicated items. If I could give zero stars to this place, I would. The last non-star is personal. If you care, in the least, about your life, your money, your time, or your belongings, avoid DZ like a diseased rack of lamb set aflame at the birthday of your worst enemy's mother's ex-boyfriend's cousin's angel poacher. Yes, DZ is the place in town that everybody tells you to go. It's got spunk. It's got character. All at a price that can't be beat! I used to be like you. I used to think DZ was a real gem. The end came swiftly, though. Prepare thyself for bad service, bad attitude, and a general perversion of the occupation "Tailor and Alterer". It's funny--over the course of this foundering and decisive in my life as a clothes-wearing individual, I came to understand something about the proud art of tailoring. When one submits himself to the hand of a sewing creature, he surrenders a certain amount of control. Ideally, he does so with a level of trust involved, with an understanding that the tailor is himself an artiste. It's like getting your hair cut, if hair were fabric and can be changed in and out at the whim of temperature. I guess that's called a wig. Sometimes life teaches us lessons at the wrong time. They are a challenge: in the face of a mighty truth, can we steel ourselves and proceed down the path of what the moment demands? I did just that. Now I can DZ for the vat of ruin it really is. Unreasonable. Vindictive. Without honor. Tyrants, daring us consumers to rise up and think for ourselves. It is the brinksmanship of a delinquent child, holding the entire family hostage. That is not the way I want my pants to feel. There is a story. I lost a bunch of weight because I decided it was time for a change. Then I lost some more. I know, huh? Ask me for all the answers, not this place. I was left with several pairs of trousers that no longer suited my tastes, particular as those are in cut and quality. Having previously employed the services of DZ, I brought them in. Did I mention that anyone in this city who sells clothes will recommend DZ in a heartbeat? Does that not strike any of you as strange, given the wide range of reviews on here already--before my righteous hammer of a write-up strikes the ground beneath Yelp's feet? You would think they might hesitate, lest the fabulous garment purchased end up a mess. If you lead a fish to water you don't think desicate it within an inch of its naturally hydrated existence. I showed up wearing a pair of pants that fit exactly how I wanted these to. There was nothing more than a nod at this very practical gesture. Artists, I thought. They know it all. Or must believe they do right up to the moment of execution, when the Muse takes over and Ego gets plundered for nutrients. When I returned to try them on, something seemed odd. And yet I was so unwilling to suspect the worst, to indeed believe that this place and the two sister who comprise its inner workings had conspired against me, that I went home happy. They know what they're doing. Everybody recommends them. Cut to the next day. I don one pair and step onto an airplane. Cut to three hours later, when I realize my legs are completely numb. I am no stranger to tight-fitting clothing and there was always a taper to these pants. But the ladies of DZ had replaced my pants with a special sort of torture device, one that pinched the nerve and yanked at the knee, cutting off circulation and creating all sorts of unwelcome Body Noise. All pairs were guilty. When next my busy schedule allowed for it, I returned to DZ and explained the situation. Again, wearing the pants that captured my present intent, I thought I was helping things--if insulting their vision (the art kind, not the eyeball kind. But that might make more sense and spare us this entire review {yes I am myself getting tired writing this) THEY ARE BLIND AND MEAN STAY AWAY). I tread delicately. They were curt but swore redemption. When I made it back there to hopefully set things straight, the problem remained. Instantly, I felt that tug in my muscles, that feeling of flesh denied all that keeps it pink. I wanted to scream, to express my feelings and excise my anguish. I patiently, apologetically, said that two of them were still not cool. There needs to be even fabric in the knee for some range of motion. And outright constriction is bad for the ankle. One of the two woman dismissively, angrily, informed me my pants would be fixed in an hour. Then she called me 30 minutes later. What did I find? Disaster. Criss-crossing, highly-visible lines all across the leg. Errant stitching. And still, the pain. I said "fine" and left, only realizing the full extent of the nightmare when I got home. Maybe I was still hoping for a happy outcome. When I got home, I looked. And I swore. And I knew that I had been punished. Do you want a tailor who punishes you? PS The pair I accepted as ok? I went in to DZ about a month ago after reading good reviews on Yelp; I am getting married this summer and need my mom's 1960's wedding dress "modernized" and tailored. Went in on a Saturday and the place was packed (I took this as a good sign) and a woman had me try on the dress.... she offered lots of suggestions and told me it would be very easy to do the alterations I wanted. She told me to please come back on a Monday morning so we could spend more time doing the fitting since "this is a very special thing" (her words). I left so excited about my future fitting and the dress! ...skip ahead two weeks; took my mom that was visiting from out of town with me in for my fitting. We were there bright and early, only other people there were the original woman and another employee. She had me put the dress on again - I walked out of the dressing room, she looked at me and said "nope, sorry. I can't do anything for you." EXCUSE ME!?!!!? After I stared at her for about a full minute in disbelief, I asked her if she remembered all the suggestions she had made; she told me she said that because there were other customers in the store. Then she seriously just turned around and walked into the back. Not only was this completely weird and maddening, it totally ruined the ONE thing my mom had a chance to be here for to help me with wedding planning. This was supposed to be "a very special thing". DZ Tailors - you were rude, 100% unprofessional, and bizarre. One of the worst retail/service experiences of my life. Thankfully, I had a happy ending. After spewing numerous expletives on the way to the car (sorry mom!) we decided to take it to Bee Tailors & Cleaners on SW Salmon. Lifesavers! The seamstress there helped us immediately, no appt. needed. She is doing exactly what i wanted to the dress; simply removing the sleeves, adding spaghetti straps, shortening the hem - all at a very reasonable price! Precursor: I have extremely high standards for craftsmanship & detail and work in a field that requires it. Ha, that sounds so lame, but it's true. So, this may come off harsh. I brought a suit here to remove excess fabric. I was referred here by a worker at Mario's. I figured they would know where a good tailor is. They finished it quickly, but the quality was poor. The drape was wrinkled in the back because they did not recognize the limitations of the suit design itself. Also, one of my belt loops was ripped and sewn half way on. I got it back really wrinkled, and had to ask them to press it more hoping some of the issues I saw would disappear. The suit for me is ruined, and was one of the first expensive suits I bought and liked. I can't bare to look at it anymore. From reading the reviews here, it sounds like DZ is great at altering jeans and shirts, but I would not recommend it for men's suiting tailoring. I didn't ask for a refund because I don't want to waste any more time there. I don't like giving 1-star ratings, but I couldn't think of any positives or similarly poor work. I would not come here if you are looking for a master of craft, but would recommend it if you need something like jeans back fast and cheap. read more

I really wanted to like this place because it's right by my house but I was extremely frustrated with them. Here's why: I asked for a price quote after she had pinned all my sleeves less tops. The owner said she could not tell me right then. It was Friday and she said she'd call me the following Monday and let me know. Then they would be ready by Wednesday. I'm not quite sure why this was because she had pinned everything and knew exactly what needed to be done. First alteration place that wouldn't give me a price quote up front. In hindsight, I should have insisted. Monday rolls around and no one calls. 30 min before they close I call to see what's going on. She doesn't remember who I am. I remind her and she looks at the tank tops - after 30 second she quotes $75 to hem my tank tops. I'm not sure why she could have told me this when I was in the shop. To be honest I think it was a bit deceptive -- she wants to call you so you're more likely to say yes. I value transparent business practices and people that honor their commitments. She has not done either of these so I'm going elsewhere. I'm frustrated because I wasted a lot of time and now I have to find another place! read more

I need to write this now because I just left here, yet again, without my alterations. That being said, as long as you have some patience for such issues (as well as the occasional "I can't find your order, can you come back tomorrow?", this is the place to go for everything from winter coats to delicate dresses. It is a totally family run establishment, and the women there are so sweet. They always get my alterations done perfectly, and I am literally there bi-weekly, so I speak from lengthy experience when I say that I highly recommend using them! They even once altered a dress for me in one day so I had it ready for a special night out - now that is good service :) Some other quick tidbits: 1) trust me when I say you will not find a better price/quality combination anywhere in Portland (I have searched), 2) the location is not ideal, there is only street parking, so try to go on off hours, and 3) they don't have a website, but they are open M-Sat 9-6pm. read more
