I am ECSTATIC about the job Mr. Robinson did restoring my grandparents' massive 1950 neo-Victorian sofa. When he came to pick it up, he noticed the family photos on my wall and asked which folks the sofa had belonged to, and his genuine interest meant a lot to me. (He is clearly in the right line of work!) The final cost was only a little bit more than the initial estimate (this sofa was in BAD shape, which I could not fully capture in the photos I emailed him), and he got it back to me two weeks earlier than planned. Deon who took care of me and my bedframe from beginning to end was outstanding. I had them reupholster my bedframe and they absolutely did a superb job! If I could vote 10 stars, I would. I brought my dining chair in to see if they could fix the arm: the arm had split lengthwise and had basically detached from the frame. I was really nervous it couldn't be fixed properly. After a week, I got my chair back, and I was seriously, seriously amazed. You couldn't tell where the split was unless you were looking with a magnifying glass and under bright light. My chair looked brand new! At first I thought he'd replaced the arm itself, but no, the repair job was just so flawless. Also, I think he'd oiled the entire chair so that the wood was well conditioned and gleaming. I'm bringing all my furniture repair here: the price is more than reasonable for this kind of work. Freaking fantastic! Note: checks or cash only, no credit cards! I refinished the wood myself, and I brought it to E C Robinson to get reupholstered. They reupholstered a chair for me when they were located in Del Ray and did a nice job. I saw that they had relocated to Old Town, so I asked them to reupholster a vintage vanity and matching stool. I supplied my own fabric; so the delay in getting it back could not be because of shipping delays. It took almost 4 MONTHS. I had almost given up. And the price I was charged was about $500 more than I expected. The front desk person was too busy to quote a price when I dropped it off, but I didn't think it would be as much as it ended up being. They finally agreed to reduce the price by $100, but it was still an outrageous amount. Apart from that, they did a poor job and forgot to cut an opening so that the stool would fit under the vanity. Poor workmanship; very little communication; place seemed chaotic and poorly run. Would not use them again. read more

I recently had a chair reupholstered at E.C. Robinson's and it turned out great! I brought in my own fabric but they have an overwhelmingly huge selection to choose from should you want to get it right there. The turn around time was about two weeks and everyone was friendly and nice. As someone else mentioned, it's not cheap... So why the four stars rather than five? It has to do with the glueing of a loose chair leg. The leg was a bit wobbly and I was charged an additional $65 to glue it. A clear glue was used but when you are glueing furniture, you should actually NOT see the glue in the corners of the joints. Not only was there a huge glob of glue coming from the joint but there were two major glue drips on the legs, which when I removed them, also took off the paint. It was a bit disappointing and gives me pause to have them work on a few other pieces that are truly antiques. Other than that, it was a good experience. read more

I had several recommendations for reupholstery, but I went with EC Robinson because of the response and exceptional customer service of Alex and Deonte. I mainly have worked with Alex and he's super responsive and helpful, giving me good advice about the best type of upholstery fabric for my lifestyle and use. I had two chairs I got off Craigslist and had reupholstered in a Kelly green and Navy Greek key fabric. The selection and price range of fabric is exceptional and you are welcome to borrow fabric swatch books to take home or peruse at their shop. Alex, Deonte and EC didn't try to upsell me or make me feel inferior because I was on a budget. I consider myself a perfectionist and EC didn't overlook a single detail. Even the interior covering was matched perfectly to my chosen fabric. I had EC repair one of the legs on the chair and it matches perfectly. The fabric I chose was back ordered, but Alex kept me informed and even inquired if I wanted to choose something else. The chairs were meticulously wrapped for delivery and he even texted me photos because I was so excited to see the transformation. For a nominal fee, Alex arranged pick up and drop off of my furniture. I've subsequently had a set of 8 antique dining chairs repaired and a three piece Ballard designs banquette. EC is extremely knowledgeable about construction of furniture and historical accuracy. It's fascinating talking to him about some antique pieces from my husband's grandparents. The store moved from Del Ray to off Duke Street, but the family atmosphere remains. My toddler was warmly welcomed and everyone is very friendly, courteous and customer service oriented at EC Robinson. I love how it is a family business, with more than four generations carrying on the family legacy, craftsmanship and customer service. **update** just had 8 antique dining room chairs repaired and reupholstered. EC is awesome. I had a nice oak dining room table that belonged to my grandparents, and in one of our moves, a leg broke, creating an unstable corner. I used a ton of wood glue on it and for about a year we had to prop it up against a wall to keep it stable, until we found EC. I took the leg in for him to look at, and he furrowed his brow, thought about it for a minute, and said "I'm gonna have to make some wood to fix this one." I don't know what the hell that means, but he did it, and the leg came back strong as ever and looking good as new. It was very affordable, and I enjoyed dealing with him. The only thing I would say is it might take a week or two to get the repair done, but I'm sure he would get it done quicker if there was some kind of emergency. Highly recommend this local craftsman. read more

Great place to go to get knicks and scratches buffed off from your precious furniture! The do an excellent job in restoring the look of the furniture and also repair and re-upholster furniture too. Mr. Robinson and his staff are fantastic - you will not find a better, more professional upholsterer anywhere. The work they do is top-notch. I've had half-a-dozen pieces redone in the past six months, including some really tricky/fussy antiques, and all look better than I could have hoped. With so few truly good folks left in this business, Mr. Robinson's always got a lot of work, but he'll do his best to work with your (reasonable) schedule, and for the quality you're getting, his prices are extremely fair. He's got a good selection of fabric books on site, but is also happy to work with what you bring in. I had two damaged teak veneer chairs that were part of a dining room set that I had custom made in Thailand about 25 years ago. With one chair the frame became separated. With the second chair the wood had also splintered. I was really happy to find EC Robinson. They did a beautiful job of the repairs! (Before and after pictures below.). Three stars because the fabric was run the wrong direction in two sections of each chair and the attempted up-sell on new cushions, to the point that I didn't want to go with them. Pissed that I didn't get a phone call on the change to what we agreed. But the two chairs match each other exactly in the way they were upholstered, not at all easy and beautifully done. Also wrapped the seats in dacron to have them sit flush with the front of the chair. Very good work, but won't be returning. read more

I was so pleasantly surprised how easy it was to have cushions made for my chairs. Prior to calling E. C. Robinson I was stressing about having to get cushions made. I was unsure of what I wanted and once I walked in and talked to the people there I felt at ease and was guided by the lady (can't remember her name) working there. Recently took in two very old craftsman chairs to be reupholstered and, well, basically completely rebuilt. (There was straw and horsehair falling out of the cushions, and the springs we exposed.) E.C. was fantastic. He worked with us to find the right fabric. Totally restructured the chairs and covered them. They look like totally new chairs (basically because now they are). And they were ready for pickup 8 days after we dropped them off. I was really impressed and would recommend E.C. Robinson to anybody in the DC area. One heads up -- he only accepts cash. On our most recent move, the movers broke two of our antique pieces: an end table and a cabinet door. I was able to email pictures of the broken pieces to EC Robinson and they we able to reassure us that they could repair them. We took them in and met Mr. Robinson who spent 20 minutes going over the broken table in detail, showing us exactly what he was going to do. 3 weeks later, the table was in better condition than ever! This table was over 100 years old and he treated it with the respect it deserved. The cabinet door was badly damaged, but he was able to repair it to the point that you can't see the damage unless you're looking for it. I took a chair to them to have the webbing replaced after the bottom broke out. When I dropped it off, Angie was warm and helpful, and the process couldn't have been easier. I left expecting to pick it back up a week or two later. Imagine my surprise, then, when Angie called back the next day to tell me it was ready!
