Pompano Beach's rich cultural heritage dates back to 1908, and is the second oldest city in Broward County. Over the decades, there have been countless historic buildings demolished and replaced with new construction. While new development is essential for a community's success, the history of a community contributes greatly to its personality. Historic preservation provides a link to the roots of the community and its people. Overall, historic preservation adds to the quality of life, making for a more livable community. The McNab House and garage preservation initiative is an important part of saving Pompano Beach's history. The effort to save the McNab House and garage from demolition was driven by the Pompano Beach Historical Society with strong support from the McNab Family and numerous stakeholders in Pompano Beach. The vision for the entire park is to create a state-of-the-art botanical garden with Floridian, tropical landscaping, plants, and water features throughout the site; an open-air event lawn; a separate event facility/building for indoor and/or covered weddings and private events; a commercial kitchen annex building to serve the historic home-turned-restaurant. The redeveloped McNab Botanical Gardens will accommodate not only casual and fine dining, but also art exhibits, educational seminars, small music concerts, and much more. A children's garden and a potential book or gift shop may also be part of the project. While the concept calls for private operators for the restaurant, café, and potential wine bar in the basement, the Garden itself will remain open to the public during business hours and be operated by a professional park operator in cooperation with the Master Operator. On April 16th, 2019, the CRA Board voted to preserve the existing McNab House built in 1926 and gave staff direction to relocate the house to McNab Park (2250 E. Atlantic Blvd.) within the East CRA boundary. The house was moved on March 1st, 2020. The McNab House will be refurbished to provide space for a restaurant. Can't wait until it opens :)

The…read morefirst colored school was a two room wooden school house on what is now Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. It was destroyed by the 1926 Hurricane. Blanche General Ely who was to become the school's first principal supported a new and better school to replace the old one. In 1928 a two story, 6 classroom concrete and stucco building was constructed for grades one through six. In addition to the classrooms the building also had an assembly hall, library, and principals office. The school was completed with funds from the African-American community, Broward County, and the Rosemead Fund. Later on the school was expanded to the 11th grade. In 1954 the school was renamed Coleman Elementary School after Reverend James Emmanuel Coleman, the pastor of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.when desegregation took place the school closed in 1970 and in 1972 the school was demolished. The site where the school once sat is now Coleman Park and there is a historical marker commemorating the school. The marker that took more than two years to get was unveiled on September 6, 2018 in a city ceremony. Some of the schools former students attended. The site is now a designated Florida Heritage Site through the Historical Marker Program.

They recently started offering free tours for locals on Wednesdays, so I decided to take advantage. It's a free self-guided tour, and they give you an audio device that gives you all the information on each room. The volunteer who checked me in was super sweet. Stranahan House is the oldest structure in Broward County, and I really enjoyed learning more about the history of the area, and especially about Ivy Stranahan's activism. It really gave me a new appreciation for the area. My favorite part was the upstairs porch, with a beautiful, relaxing view of the New River. I took the volunteer's advice and sat up there for a minute enjoying it instead of rushing through, and I'm so glad I did. Be aware that upstairs isn't air conditioned, so half of the tour is really hot. Dress accordingly or bring a fan! Overall, I'd highly recommend stopping by! It's something fun to do that's a nice change of pace.

There is a computer area, storytime area with a couple of toys, and builder tiles and another area with table where kids Can play with puzzles or other items. There are tons of engaging stations within this room, which was so nice to see. This is a great place to go. When it's too hot outside for the playground, my son loves it.

I usually go to the Deerfield library filled with smelly patrons, loud children and kind librarians. Even though the Boca library was beautiful everyone who worked there was kind of rude. Maybe they were having a bad day or did not want to help me print my paper. It cost me $.80 and seemed to be a bit of an annoyance for the people working there, I definitely will not be back. Not everyone who worked there was unpleasant but from now on, I will stay in Broward where the employees are nice.

They also have a small Friends of the library section inside the main library. Outside are a few drive up drop boxes to return books. Inside they have a long oval shaped bar with plenty of seats. There is also plenty of seating inside. The food was pretty good, and the service was great. I ordered the BEER BATTERED FISH FRY that wasn't greasy, and my friend ordered the CHICKEN MARSALA. Both meals were worth the prices. The only damper of the evening was that my friend Frank lost his wedding band whose partner passed away a year ago. We searched the floor and Bathroom, but the ring never showed up. The house was built in 1948 by Ruth and Ray Wenger on Wall Street, an unincorporated area of Palm Beach County between Delray Beach and Boynton Beach. The home is known for its signature flat and curved walls, circular windows, and rectangular framing. The Art Deco eyebrows, flat shelves over the windows that look like a wedding cake are one of the most striking features on the house. The Wenger's built the home room by room with interesting architectural design elements scavenged from salvage yards. The kitchen was built first and the 1,400-square-foot home also has two bathrooms, two bedrooms, a family room, a living room, a Florida room and a converted den. A 400-square-foot garage was Ray Wenger's machine shop while Ruth used a portion of the home for her hair salon. An outdoor circular staircase in the front of the house takes you up to the flat roof where the Wenger's used to hang out to stay cool before they had air conditioning, A low, concrete blue wall with heart cutouts surrounding the house was a Valentine from Ray to his beloved wife Ruth. This was the first private residence ever to be placed on Palm Beach County's Register of Historic Places. Houses have to be older than 50 years to qualify for the list. The Wenger House is a treasure because of the way it combines the architectural styles of Art Deco, Tropical Deco and modernist design. In 2000, Boynton Beach artist Rick Beaulieu helped the current owners compose a rose, apple, yellow and blue color scheme making it even more spectacular. The Wenger Home was features on cable HGTV's What's With That House?, a show about homes that aren't typical to a neighborhood. This house has everything, an endearing love story and compelling architecture. Although off the beaten path, I enjoyed seeing the house in person.
