The center's construction began in June 2018, and it was completed in 2020, earning LEED v4.1 Gold certification for Existing Buildings. I got a chance to check out the inside and was impressed of the building. This community center in Cresthaven is named after Charlotte Burrie, a former Commissioner and Vice Mayor. She was an advocate for building a community center in the Cresthaven neighborhood of Pompano Beach. She served as a city commissioner from 2007 until 2018. The community center has an lobby and reception area, administrative offices, small conference room, auditorium with stage and dressing rooms, warming kitchen and two multi-purpose activity rooms. Programs held here include line dancing, Silver Sneakers, yoga, bunco, karate, jazzercise, and Zumba classes. There is also a community board game night. There are flyers for all kinds of events posted in the community center and a listing of dates and times on the website. This community center serves as a hub for cultural, civic, and recreational activities in a building that was designed with a focus on accessibility and functionality. Community centers provide inclusive spaces for diverse groups to meet, learn, and grow which reduces the feeling of isolation while empowering community members with skills. Providing affordable recreational and wellness programs is a vital component of a communities well being and the Charlotte Burrie Community Center does an excellent job of meeting this need.

A good community center offers varied opportunities for its residents of all ages. This community center is located in Pompano Beach and was named after Pompano Beach city pioneer, Elijah Pat Larkins. Mr. Larkins grew up during segregation and fought for civil rights. He became the first African-American Mayor of Pompano Beach where he served seven terms as mayor nineteen years as a City Commissioner. I stopped by the E Pat Larkins Community Center for a tag sale called Nana's Closet. I chance to peel inside and was impressed with how nice this community center is. It has a main auditorium with a stage and dressing rooms that can be rented for banquets. There is also a classroom. Upcoming events include a movie might, bingo, line dancing, game night, intergalactic bead show, and painting with a twist. Stop in and the friendly staff will be more than happy to let you know about the latest Pompano Beach happenings.

He passed away in 2009. We stopped by here recently to get information on an upcoming event (Nana's Closet). It's quite easy to find as it's located just a few blocks north of Atlantic Boulevard. The grounds and inside of the building were pristine. Everything was so immaculate you'd think the building was brand new. The staff inside were very helpful. We also picked up some brochure on other upcoming Pompano Beach cultural and art events. Inside the community center, they have a large main auditorium used for meetings and banquets. They also offer various classes like yoga, et al, senior prom, bingo nights, and many other events.

Formerly the Pompano Beach Civic Center this center is now named the Emma Lou Olson Civic Center…read more Emma Lou Olson, a life long Pompano Beach resident who passed away in 2002 served for nine years on the Pompano Beach City Commission which included six years as mayor. I visited the center for the Grandma's Attic event which allowed residents of Pompano Beach to sell things they no longer wanted at a large indoor garage sale. I was surprised at how large the event was. In addition to the main auditorium room there was another room to the side that had vendors. In addition to used goods the event also included a bake sale. This is an older building but it is nicely kept and perfect for Pompano Beach to hold small events in. The only drawback is that parking is limited. She took the time to explain my results and was very understanding to my concerns and graciously answered all my questions. She told me that once she was finished going over all my results, she would have the doctor come in for a moment to see me. Dr.Blenke came in and introduced herself and proceeded with checking my heart for any irregularities. At this point she took a look at me and said "your left bottom lip looks bigger than the bottom right, and asked if I had botox to my lip". I was a little surprised by this but took it at stride and said "no I haven't had any botox. She then mentioned "and your left eye is smaller than your right eye" and tried to get Ashley to agree. Of course Ashley being the professional that she is said "every side is different" and didn't partake in the doctor's comments. The lack of professional demeanor surprised me, as I tried to make sense of why she was so fixated on me and scrutinizing my features. I have been very stressed lately with my mom being in the hospital, and almost dying of pneumonia so I figured maybe she noticed something medically wrong with me. maybe that's why she's asking these bazaar questions. I was so puzzled by her demeanor towards me and said "I haven't had a stroke or anything, I guess I'm just lopsided on one side. I am appalled by her comments and lack of bed side manners and professionalism. I will have to evaluate whether I will go there again. For anyone that is asymmetrical which is basically everyone on this earth, please beware of this doctor. Thank you, dismayed patient

I had a borrowed item that needed to be returned, but I didn't want…read moreto make the long drive to a library branch that I'm accustomed of going to from where I was. With the help of Yelp search, it found the nearest Broward County library from me--Deerfield Beach Perry White Public Library. It was a large space with many organized shelves displaying a vast genre of books, DVDs, CDs, and audio books. There were plenty of computers, study rooms for privacy, and seats. The children's area was on the right side of the library while the adults area was on the other side. The library was partially full of patrons and it was fairly quiet. I approached the check out desk and returned the borrowed item. I definitely would like to return to this library whenever I'm around the area.

I love finding public art that culturally enriches the community. I discovered this bronze…read moresculpture in front of the E. Pat Larkins Community Center during a tag sale. Family Roots is by artist George Gadson. Interesting fact about George Gadson is that he is self taught. His artwork is inspired by spirituality and values. His public art works seek to highlight the forgotten history in communities and to capture civic memories. Gadson also created the Kathleen Cooper Wright statue in front of the KC Wright Broward County School Board administrative offices along with numerous other art works displayed throughout South Florida in multiple locations including the African American Research Library and Cultural Center, the City of Lauderhill, the City of Tamarac, the Broward County and the public commissions in Miami-Dade and in Palm Beach County. For Family Roots, Gadson met with the Northwest Pompano Community for input in the design. The sculpture was installed in 2007 and features a family embracing on top of a granite pedestal engraved with the name of community heroes. In 2022 the City of Pompano Beach had the sculpture restored. About this work Gadson has said "This sculpture was created to empower the community with knowledge of their culture and heritage. A community without knowledge of their history is like a tree without roots." I fully endorse that sentiment and I love the message of family and community that is represented in this piece.

Artist George Gadson did this bronze on commission for the City of Pompano Beach to be placed here. It was first installed in 2007. The theme "family roots" was to pay tribute to the "preservation of family heritage". In 2022, the statue was restored (cleaned and polished, etc.) along with the engraved names on the plaque on the pedestal below. The names listed represent the unsung heroes in the local community. If you're in the area, stop by to see this sculpture. You can feel the love between the parents and their children as portrayed. It's a fitting tribute.

This is a neighborhood park in the 1.3 square mile Highlands section of Pompano Beach. Highlands is…read morea neighborhood that was developed with single family homes in the mid 1950's by developer Mackle Company and architect James Vensel who laid out four basic types of open floor plan homes. Highlands Park is a 3.3 acre neighborhood park located next to the Highlands Community Center which was built in 1998 and contains an auditorium and two classrooms. Programs offered include karate, Art with Shelia, and Ms. Peach's Little Bookworms. Park amenities include a basketball court, covered playground with toddler area and one for older children, two pavilions with picnic tables, and an open space for play and recreation. There were a lot of large shade trees in the park. I ducked in to use the restrooms and was delighted to find it clean and stocked. Some people were setting up for a party as I was leaving. This looks like a well maintained green space ideal for the community's recreational enjoyment.

I go to a lot of events here. It's always a nice time. Never any problems. Good neighborhood. The Pompano Beach Toy Con was a lot of fun. Lots of cool things to see like vintage Star Wars, vintage records, Pokémon items, Japanese snacks, Handmade jewelry, and different types of art and so much more too numerous to name them all. Also People dressed in costumes is always fun taking pictures with the kids. We will definitely go next year.

But it was renamed in honor of Emma Lou, the late mayor and long time commissioner of Pompano Beach. There are meetings and banquet rooms here as well as classrooms, halls, and even a dance studio. A variety of programs are offered here as well as lessons. Sports and exercise classes including pickle ball, karate, Zumba, et al. Unfortunately, they no longer hold the granny's attic that I had a selling table at for several years. This was one of my favorite events as there aren't many inside yard sales. But check out the current events and classes -- there's something for everyone.
