Taking eight years to complete, the Hennepin County Government Center opened in 1977, to…read moreconsolidate county government and judicial function in an indoor setting. It is 24 stories, 403 feet tall, and consists of two towers, connected by a very impressive atrium. My wife and I spent a Minneapolis weekday afternoon, exploring downtown using the Minneapolis Skyway System (which itself is extremely impressive: second level pedestrian bridges connecting 80 city blocks with 9.5 miles of walkway). We ended up at the Center, which was different than the other places: the center is a giant indoor atrium that sits above 6th street, connecting the two towers, all indoors. This means that for office workers looking outside from the towers, the view could be that of a giant indoor space, matching close outdoor space which could get quite cold. It's a great marriage of how the Skyway flows into the atrium, almost presenting a model of how an underwater city might look like, with a giant 400 feet high open space. It also reminds me of the design on some of the giant cruise boats that I've recently been on, and maybe even being inside of a snow globe, watching a large Minneapolis snow storm, passing through. It's a great example of thoughtful design and great engineering.

A security guard eventually walked up to me to help and opened the door for me to wait with the others inside. I've never been to this building and not sure how courthouse weddings work but we were guided upstairs once everyone got there and the quick ceremony was right in the upstairs lobby just standing around. We were able to stay and take a few pics and left out. They had a bit of construction going on and some areas closed off since the building was technically closed. No good solid areas to take photos though.

I was a little nervous so I called ahead of time - they do in fact allow for passport applications without appointments, but will serve appointments first. We came in, checked in on the screen and were served within 2 minutes! I was shocked but very pleased. We had all our documents ready to go. Service was quick and efficient and the lady at the window was very kind and personable, though I think she was new and being trained because the lady behind her was a bit quiet and focused. Regardless, we were treated well and both ladies were efficient and helpful. There is an ample amount of seating and the area is beautiful, filled with real plants and greenery. It looked clean and there are vending machines available. It's connected to a Library so if you have little ones and have a long wait, you can hop on over there.

Going in the room almost has similarities to a concert. First trying to find a goddamn parking space. The audience is waiting around. The clerk is the warm up. Actually she had an odd resemblance to singer, Kasey Lansdale. She liked that. The officers of the court, attorneys are the roadies. Then the band, court reporter, defendant etc. The bailiff is the announcer. Then the star performer, the judge makes it all happen. And the decision is the encore. My first experience was on jury duty, when the OJ Simpson verdict was handed down and there was cheering in the room. I was on a crack cocaine possession case. I really enjoyed it, I also hated my job at the time and was hoping for a murder. We found him not guilty and I think he was more surprised than anyone. Then there's the in between traffic tickets, which ended up being a royal pain in the ass due to lack of staff and it was easier to pay the damned ticket.
