Following a man around can turn up a lot more than who he meets for lunch. I took over tailing this guy from an associate who'd disappeared on me. I should've expected as much from a magician, but it's a trick he wouldn't play twice on me. The magic man last called to say he'd seen our mark go inside this joint in Silverlake, the Eagle. He was on way back to meet me; said that if he couldn't walk he'd take the car instead - it was the last thing he said before the line went dead. Or maybe that was the call from Information Society. I slipped on some leather later that night, which felt more comfortable than I felt admitting to it feeling. An hour later I sauntered into the Eagle ready for trouble. I knew this place, and it's owner, Charlie. It's a dark place, decently lit, but painted black throughout the two large bars, huge outdoor covered smoking patio, and enormous pool room. It doesn't take long to figure out that it's a real man's bar, a place for men's men, men who don't think twice about taking another man down by hand - not to mention the mouths on these guys. I ordered a stiff one and drained it fast. Turns out that the Eagle is one of the last true leather bars going, with a long, thick history of servicing the community at large. If you're the kind of guy that like bears, daddies, or their fans, you won't find a better hangout in town. They've even got special nights for women - the kind who won't even take 'yes' for an answer from each other. We have always had a good time at Eagle LA. The drinks are cheap during happy hour and reasonable other times. There are complaints on here about watered down drinks and unfriendly bartenders. We haven't experienced either, in fact we find the bartenders all friendly, if they aren't busy they are happy to stop and chat a little. If they are busy, they are fast and professional. In terms of the layout and entertainment value of the space, this place is great. However, it is inundated with white male imagery on the walls, the video they play, the workers, the dancers. The vibe here is not friendly at all to POC, and you feel it from the patrons to the staff. Last night was my first time there. It was homemade porn night, and they had a contest wherein you submitted your videos and they played them on the big screens. I got a FB notification about it, so I decided to check it out. I almost didn't go, because some of the reviews indicated that the place was a filthy, neo-Nazi, white supremist, hateful place with lousy bartenders. I'm glad that I ignored those reviews. The event started at 9:00pm, so my BF and I got there at 8:45pm. The doorman, who looked like he could kill you by looking at you, was surprisingly nice, welcomed us, and said no cover since we got there early, and said have a good time. It was pretty empty at 8:45pm, but by 10:00pm the place was full, and by 11:00pm it was shoulder to shoulder. This is definitely not the typical WeHo Club, so I can see where some people might be a bit put off by the place. This is not really a place for Attention Whores, self-absorbed twinks, and entitled Instagram social justice warriors looking for reasons to be offended. Nope. They might consider sticking with the clubs in WeHo. This is actually an inclusive place. It's so inclusive that no one really pays attention to whatever you're into. If you've got a statement to make, or you want people to fawn all over you and give you preferential treatment because of whatever it is that you say you are, then again, you're in the wrong place. There was a good mix of people of all ages and all levels of skin pigmentation, but it was mostly 30+ year old guys, daddies, lumberjacks, tatted muscle guys, and a lot of regular guys like me and my BF. No one was snotty or pretentious, and the people were just nice and friendly. The appearance of this place gave me the vibe of a really mean leather bar, but it's actually a cool leather bar. There were four bartenders working the main bar. Total Tom of Finland types, and really nice. I treated them with respect, and that respect was returned to me. The pour is heavy, and the drinks are appropriately priced. No complaints from me, whatsoever. Although there was a lot of PDA (my BF and I were guilty of that as well), and although the amateur gay porn was on the big screens, it wasn't raunchy. No one was doing anything inappropriate. The one bathroom that I saw (there's gotta be more than one but I didn't see it) had a sign on it that said ONE PERSON AT A TIME. Hmmmmm. Interesting. We left at 1:00am and it was so packed that it seemed like it took forever to get to the front door to leave. The (now multiple) doormen said have a good night and drive safe. Pandas, husbears and cubs, oh my! As some of you may know, my brother's gay, so is his boyfriend and many of my closest friends. As such, I'm quite familiar with most of L.A.'s gay clubs and even get occasionally recognized at Arena, Circus, Akbar and the Abbey--to the amusement of my friends. Generally speaking, my experience with gay culture is limited to the WeHo and Sunset Junction varietals. I speak twink, appreciate go-go dancing boys (and girls) and fully embrace the honorific moniker "flame dame," the now PC term for the former "f--- hag." One group I know very little about is the bear/leather community. So when the opportunity arose to check out Eagle LA, I jumped on it. If you're a female, the very first thing you'll notice is 1) you'll likely be the only girl there and 2) wonder where all these big, strapping men have been hiding in Silver Lake. I was the only girl that night and frankly, quite loved it. As with most gay bars, I was welcomed and treated with courtesy and deference. I had one 6'5 gentleman clear a path for me to the outdoor patio and yet another carve out a niche at the bar so I could squeeze in to order drinks. I fully embraced my damsel-hood in this sea of testosterone. Here's where it gets iffy and where I may lose some of you. The main bar has flat-screen TVs surrounding it that plays adult scenes. You can't turn away from it, because it's literally visible from every angle. If you're timid, bashful or easily flabbergasted--you'll likely be shocked. But, if you're like me, you'll understand that it comes with the territory and in all honesty, watching easy-on-eyes, manly men is a refreshing departure from seeing skinny hipsters in even skinnier jeans. This according to the inflexible laws of an iron formula: you will eventually end up at a place that you once mocked, that makes each dreadful day in the very minutest detail like its hairy older brother, or perhaps, worse still, a molesting uncle, who seems to communicate itself to those external forces the very essence of whose existence is one tired, seedy bar after another. I've done wild things, but I'm pretty sure the people that come here have me beat--by a lot. And then some. I came with two regulars after having dinner with them. I expected a lot of leather, rubber, and underwear (since it was underwear night) and didn't see as much as I thought. I was pleasantly surprised to see a mixed crowd, which to me is an indication of how welcoming and accepting a place is. A good sign. The place had a lot going on. There were places to tie people up, porn on TV, a pool table, arcade games, and great looking patrons and bartenders. Hotter than the ones at Mickey's. This is one of my favorite places ever! The first time I went to this wonderful place I caught eyes with this guy as he was walking by, he stopped to talk and we ended up having a hot make out session on the patio and in the restroom. This was a great introduction to this place. Of course the next time I went back and saw him again he didn't remember who I was, lol. I appreciated him anyway, He was first white guy I had ever kissed :-) I'm usually here on Sundays when they have the $2 beer bust. I began my first trip to Los Angeles, CA by literally stumbling into The Eagle one Friday night, half bewildered, half excited to the point of ejaculation. I'd been dying to see what all the fuss was about and, being from a smaller town back east, I was ready for a manly frolick among my people -- the hirsuit. The Eagle is, by far, my favorite bar I've ever been to. It's dark and seedy, but in the best, hairiest way. The bartenders are all shirtless and polite, the drinks are strong and good, and the television screens are all turned to channel XXX. Be wary of the chains in the back, though -- you might get pinned up. There was also this crazy fat guy with a paddle wandering around spanking dudes left and right, but that and the old guys playing pool just added to the atmosphere, in my opinion. The place has a great layout and grody bathrooms, but what would one expect from a place full of daddies? Let me start off by saying that as a gay man it is hard to find a place where you feel welcomed when you feel you don't fit into any of the gay subcultures and communities, Eagle LA welcomed me with open arms and I am surprised to say that I had a great time here! I am always skeptical about gay bars and clubs because the crowds tend to be very pretentious in LA, either you fit in or you don't - LAME! This was not the case. On Friday night, they hosted an event called CUBSCOUT and it was very trendy, mixed crowd of bears and cubs and whatever else they want to call themselves. I got to meet the host of the event because he is friends with a friend (yay) and he made me feel super welcomed which made me want to stay even more! Even some of the people I met that night were very laid back and cool, I completely forgot where I was and was enjoying myself with beer in hand and friends on my side. Ladies and gentlemen: The Eagle. I found myself headed toThe Eagle as part of a crew performing for the first night of OINK; Thats right, we're the guys with the hooks. Now, Im a straight guy and Ive never been to a gay bar. I have absolutly no idea what to expect here. What I found is, the Eagle is one of the most incredible places Ive ever drank at. When I walked in, it was immediate culture shock. The leather, the PDA, the hardcore porn on the tvs in the corners, it was pretty stunning, but after the initial shock wears off, the fun begins. Baptisim by fire comes to mind. We perform at OINK fairly regularly and we've had the chance to get to know a lot of the guys who work at the bar. The bartenders are mixological masters, drinks are strong, inexpensive and hit the spot. The music is great; all night long I found myself looking up at the speakers impressed at the tunes. The security and wait staff are all great guys and very polite. The crowd runs from Abercrombie & Fitch college boy types all the way up to guys who look like they should be pumping iron on Rikers Island. Most of the guys who show up to OINK tend to be in character, meaning there's a lot more S&M and hardcore leather (depending on what the theme is) and I can honestly say just about everyone Ive met here has beed a real sweetheart. If you embarrass easily, you may want to find something a bit more on par with your speed, the guys here are not shy. The patio is dark and secluded; Ill leave that combination to your imagination. Overall, the Eagle is great! As a first experience, I feel like I was kicked off the deep end, but now when I go out of town and someone suggests going to a gay bar, I think to myself "pfftttt, bring it on, I drink at the Eagle". Ah the Eagle....finally L.A. and Silver Lake got back the Testosterone Bar it has been so sorely missing since the Faultline sold out and went all wussy. Just about any night you go you can count on a great mix of guys from big ol bears to muscle bears to blue collar to denim to fetish and leather coming thru the door. Hell, when you walk in you are greeted by a hell of bear with more piercings than most can handle - and his hardcore look is only complimented by his kindness. Yeah the Eagle has bought into that stupid stripper thing that the Silver Lake bars have been toying with...but at least it is limited and only a few nights here and there....The cruising and interaction is the best here of any Silver Lake area bar....and the guys by far the best looking. We enjoyed the boot polishing stand the other night...nice to have that back! Bravo Eagle! Us Old Time Silver Laker's thank you for being real. read more

Because I love a good coincidence, I have to note how befitting it is that this is my 69th review... This is the BF's favorite gay bar in L.A.; this I'm sure has NOTHING to do with the bacon-wrapped-hot-dog vendor conveniently parked just outside the establishment on weekend nights... It's not necessarily my fave, but I'll definitely be back and look forward to it. Pretty much what I expected from L.A.'s preeminent leather bar: older crowd, tattoos, beards, muscles, etc. You're not hit over the head (literally/figuratively) with S&M/bondage-y stuff, though apparently paddlings are not out of place (not this night - it was a Sunday; "Principal Bob" doesn't paddle on a school-night???). Nice tunes playing (random mix of gay clubby shit, eighties pop standards, and present day alt/indie-rock). Leather/bear porn playing on some TVs; far more offensive was Jim Henson's "The Dark Crystal" playing on the largest screen - that shit scares the bejeezus out of me. Bartenders were friendly and efficient, drinks relatively cheap, and the crowd definitely lacked the pretension of most WeHo establishments. There's a pool table and a decent sized patio. They even have pinball machines -- I could bring my parents here!!! (well, on second thought...) Coming back for a "Cub-Scout" night - will update my review accordingly. read more

Let's see - I have been to (and am a fan of) the Eagle in Detroit, Portland, Seattle, San Diego. Of these, I have to say that the Seattle Eagle is by far my favorite - enough for me to be a regular. Good music, dark spots, and good layout in a small dark 'seedy' bar. Perfect. The LA Eagle is not nearly as dark and seedy as I personally would prefer to see in a Eagle. It's more of a cleaned up LA version of what a Eagle should be (in my book). Few dark corners, don't remember seeing the requisite sling (I'll have to look harder probably). The drinks were sissy pours - but maybe I just need to suck up to the bartenders. What's the deal with 'manly' bars serving cocktails in mugs? That misses the whole point of a cocktail - unless you fill it up half way with booze all you get is a watered down crappy drink. Fortunately they do have regular cocktail glasses (tumblers actually) so if you are like me ask for a glass instead of a mug. I do like the layout, it's enough that you can cruise around the bar a few times if you don't want to stand in one spot the whole night. Even on a busy night the no-nonsense bathroom goes pretty quickly. Decent smoking patio area (wish there was a bar out there). Crowd is friendly - don't be scared. All in all a decent, um, sanitized eagle that I will probably visit a lot more than going to WeHo,etc. Still leaves me in search of the proper gay dark dingy dive bar though. read more

I have gone there about 6 or 7 times and i always have a great time. You will find a mix of leather daddies, bears, cubs, and all in between here. The people are all there to have a good time and the bartenders are very nice and have a heavy hand. Ok so this place is not for the conservative types. This place pushes your limits.hey play hardcore porn on all the tv's and you may see some dirty things going on in corners. I have seen more than i care to share LOL. The best day to go would be satudays when they have thier MEAT RACK night.but you will have to get there early. the line gets long and in silverlake parking is a bitch. Also there is 6 dollar cover on Meat rack night which seems to draw more crowds and they have some raunchy go-go men. You cant say go-o boys at the Eagle cause one look you know these are men not boys. read more

This bar really got bumpin' once partial owner Charlie Matula bought the place and reincarnated The Gauntlet II into The Eagle. The Phoenix would have been a more apt name for its transformation from dying dive to busy butch bar. Patrons and staff call this a leather bar, but on any given night the crowd is less than 20% dressed in leather. The other 80% is composed of bears, a rubber wearer or two, a punk or two, and masculine men aged 21 to 45. On "gear" nights, more leathermen and rubberists appear, but never more than 30% of the bar once it's full. But don't let appearances deceive you; just cuz they're not in leather doesn't mean they're tame! Depending on the night, the crowd is pretty friendly. "Casual cruisy" is a good summation. And if you like your men rough around the edges, you'll find the crowd attractive. The bartenders are amiable, too, though they're usually too busy to chat. Arrive when it's quieter and they have a moment to chat, and you'll find they're good folk. Unfortunately, friendliness doesn't translate into mixing skills. Anything beyond "beer, please" or "alcohol + mixer" is not worth ordering, but if you're at the Eagle, generally you're not seeking a pomegranate mojito. Cigar smoke envelops the patio like a fog, particularly on uniform nights, and with a noisy interior after 11pm, it can be hard to find a good place to cruise comfortably. read more

My husband and I are fortunate to live just down the road from The Eagle...the best part of our visits have been discovering the Tuesday afternoon/evening Happy Hour (Tightwad Tuesday)- extremely reasonably priced drinks...and the bartender, Blake, is the icing on the cake-- remembered us by name after a few visits, knows our order-- and he's like that with nearly all the regulars. It's great to have a home-base bar and a fantastic bartender super close by! read more

I'm almost the opposite of the Eagle's clientele. AKA I am a non-bear, non-leather gay lady. However, I went because I was meeting a friend, and I was warmly greeted and accepted here. While it's not my cup of tea on a surface level, (it is in my heart, though) all the patrons were sweet and absolutely respectful. It's one of the few bars I've been to where the patrons kindly say excuse me as they push past. The bartenders were great, the drinks were strong, and the owners were right there, which is awesome because you know they're on top of it. OMGthatwasn'tmeanttobeajoke. I'm just saying that you know they know what's going on, and they're trying to maintain their standards of quality. A for the Eagle. read more
