Great spot with a 1/4 mile walk to a small private beach. All food items do need to be locked in the bear locker along with any toiletries.

Priceless beauty on a point of paradise overlooking majestic Lake Tahoe. What more could one ask for? I've read the reviews, and most of the negative ones seem to revolve around a hornet/wasp issue (we saw none), so I can't really speak to that. Based on our experience as seasoned campers, we'd absolutely return to this much coveted and unique campground when we next have the chance. State campgrounds require a lot of research in order to really nail down the best experience. We chose an amazing campsite overlooking Emerald Bay, with priceless views of the sunset in the evening and a short walk to a private beach that only the campground has access to. The pines stretched forever, we saw bald eagles, thankfully no bears and we spent each evening drinking beers and soaking it all in. As far as natural beauty, it's 5-star flawless. The rest, however, is imperfect. The bathrooms weren't always in top shape due to the high volume of campers and campsites, but the staff did a decent job of maintaining them and the showers had hot running water. What was confusing and inconvenient was that the lower showers don't have their own token machine, meaning you have to hike to the top one, then back down, or just use the top one instead. The sheer number of campsites and the quiet nights were an issue, too. One or two loud/obnoxious campsites that ignored curfew made late nights difficult for others. The sites are so close together and there are so many that it's inevitable this would be a problem. All minor quibbles, in retrospect. We thoroughly enjoyed this experience and sharing it with our son. I will be marking my calendar to go back there next year!

This is a great spot to take in some of the most spectacular views of Lake Tahoe. The campground has ample space for tents or campers. Each site has a bear-proof trash box. The sites are well maintained, and only a short walk to the trails to Eagle Point. If you're not camping, you can park on the shoulder of Route 89 and walk down to the point to take in the amazing views of the lake and Emerald Bay. The wall down from the road is easy for al hikers and only takes 10 minutes. Totally worth your time!

Very kind staff. we arrived at about 22:00 and there was no one at the reception, but we phoned in advance and were told that there was a board with empty seats. So upon arrival we took 59th place. The campsite has a place for a tent, a parking place, a barbecue, an iron cabinet for food storage (from bears), a toilet and a shower nearby (a shower is paid separately), a descent to the Emerald Bay. Very beautiful place, I recommend.

This is an amazing campground, has everything I could want! There's plenty of things to do on the campgrounds without having to drive anywhere, like walk to a tiny beach where you can swim in the lake (near site 65), take a short walk to 2 stunning viewpoints (near sites 89 and 30), or hike the Rubicon Trail to Vikingsholm which starts from the campgrounds (near site 30). Each campsite has a bear box, picnic table, and fire pit with a grill. There are lighted restrooms with showers and flushable toilets, which I saw them cleaning in the morning, and water spigots every few campsites. I didn't see any bears or yellow jackets, but there are quite a few bugs that come out at night, particularly this one gross type of flying beetle-like bug, but nothing that directly bothered us. There was also cell reception throughout most of the campsite (I have T-Mobile). Highly recommend this campsite, would definitely come back! FYI, if you have questions, the camp rangers seem very responsive on campsitephotos.com

    Cheers to the weekend!

My husband and I are avid car campers and occasional backpackers, and we've camped in many places in California (Redwoods National Park, Lassen, Joshua Tree and Death Valley, at the beach, in the high Sierras and etc.) We've been in campgrounds where there are no flush toilets and no showers, only an outhouse, and we've backpacked in remote parts of Yosemite and Kings Canyon where you have to do your thing in the bush so many feet away from where you've set up camp. I say all this 'cause you have to believe me when I say that Eagle Point Campground is truly luxury camping at its best. You have showers, you have flush toilet, you have drinkable water, the lake is a short quarter of a mile walk from the lower campground, the trailhead for the amazing Rubicon Trail is in the campground and you have a great view of the magnificently blue Lake Tahoe, all for $35 a night. You don't need to drive somewhere to do lots of activities like kayaking, swimming and hiking. And the stars! Seeing the Milky Way and constellations at night was what made me realize how much I've missed camping. This part of the lake was perfect for stargazing! We camped here recently, twice in one month. The first was with friends. We had two adjacent sites for 14 people. It got to be challenging fitting all our food and toiletries in 2 bear boxes as we had to bring lots of food to feed that many people for 3 days. We took turns cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner, so we all had to bring coolers. Lol The second time we camped we camped for 4 days and it was a little easier as it was just me and my husband. But both times our sites were in the lower campground which is really the best part of the campground. So try to get a higher number (like 75+) if you want better and flatter sites and easy access to the beach and overlooks. If your group is big like ours and have more than two cars, you will have to park the extra vehicles in the overflow lot/Rubicon Trailhead. Only 1 car per site is included in the fee, so all additional cars have to pay $10 per night. Some sites are also "Premium Sites" which means they cost more than $35 a night. Yes you're gonna get dusty. Yes it's going to be cold at night. Yes the ground is hard and cold. Yes the bathroom floor gets dirty with everyone going in there with their boots. You're camping for God's sake. Go stay in hotel if you have a problem with all that! We took a 5 year break from camping because we got busy with my nephew and niece. Now, we can't wait to go again! Camping here has made us love camping again. I have to thank my friends for booking sites here. We had a great time sitting around the fire, toasting our marshmallows and assembling our S'mores, and gazing at the Milky Way at night!

Looking at Lake Tahoe where it meets Emerald Bay from the overlook.

Lower Eagle Lake Campground is one of our favorites. Quiet and private sites. Newer bathrooms with flush toilets, showers and lights. Water spigots between every two spots. Several short trails that lead to panoramic views or beach side. Remember you are in bear country so keep your goodies secured.

We just left from an awesome 3 nights of tent camping here. Since the campground literally opened days ago after a 4-year closure due to remodeling, we were able to walk in and have our pick of sites! Normally this will not be the case and reservations will be a must. So on to the review starting with the cons because there are less of them than the pros!! CONS: narrow roadways in parts of the camp will make it difficult for large rigs to pass one another, the campsites near the top are on hills and will make for terrible tent sites (choose 51-89 for level spots!), and VERY hard to find the campground as there are no clear markings/signs and construction is happening all along Hwy 89 around Emerald Bay to make things a little more tricky. PROS: beautifully remodeled bathrooms and showers ($1 tokens for 3 mins- hot!), pretty natural setting and you can find private sites, .25 mile walk down a switchback old fire road to the campgrounds private beach access! (Slightly rocky beach at the entrance to beautiful Emerald Bay), on site (located just past campsite #88) short hike out to Eagle Point where there is a picnic table and great sunset views, farther out from the bustle of South Tahoe but not as far as other Emerald Bay State Park campgrounds, premium sites have INCREDIBLE views but you pay for those views at $45/night. We were happy with the standard site at $35/night and I still just a short walk away from amazing views. The only thing I would say was completely frustrating and not atypical for campgrounds is the noise level after hours. Better monitoring and enforcement needs to happen so people who actually want to sleep in their tents, can do that. Otherwise, lovely lovely campground and Tahoe, you are stunning!

I really enjoyed camping here. The park rangers were friendly and polite. Our campsite was close to bathroom and showerroom, but it did not bother us. I recommend to get stuff before you come to here because there is no grocery stores. We had to drive back about 20 min to get food. I want to come back to this campground again.

Really enjoyed this campground. We stayed during the week so it was pretty empty camper wise. Our spot was #56 which had a partial view of the lake. Spot was close to the bathroom and directly across from the campground host. The dumpster was not to far either. The host was David and he was really friendly and nice. The bathrooms were very nice and the shower is so refreshing and the water is warm! It's a dollar per token and token will get ya 3 min shower. Which was plenty of time for me and my son to get all cleaned up. There was a bear sighting the night before we got there but no sightings while we were there. All the campsites have a bear box but some sites have a smaller box then others. Definitely suggest having a bear proof ice chest in case spot had a smaller box. A bald eagle flew right over our campsite on the last morning. The campground is about a 15-20 min drive from the town. eagle falls/lake is only a ten min drive. We hiked to the falls and continued to eagle lake which was spectacular. Lots of trails close by the campground. While the campground is dog friendly the trails are not. Great campground to come if plan to do a lot of hiking.

It's a beautiful place, but I had a few issues on my last particular trip. First, all the host staff that I dealt with were VERY rude and accusatory. My space (102) was advertised for a 30' RV plus 1 vehicle. My RV is 24' and barely fit, which didn't allow my vehicle to be parked on the pavement easily. Immediately after unhooking, several staff rushed over and literally screamed at me telling me I needed to park on the pavement or that I'll be fined and towed. I had 2 wheels on torn up dirt, barely off the pavement. I debated them stating what their site advertised, to no avail. So, I ended up getting my truck between two large trees and an inch from my RV to make it work because the main road is a good distance from the campground. I made it work, but the way the staff treated me was disrespectful and rude to say the least. My group had several other brushes with the staff and said the same thing with their encounters. You'd think that being a host at this campground would be a vacation-like work and total utopia but apparently not. My other issue is because the lake is a over a hill a ways from the campground, they only have one small parking lot that they make you pay extra to use, even if you're staying there. We got yelled at for taking 2 minutes to unload our beach stuff. So, a loading zone would be nice. Not sure if I'll be back, there's plenty of other campground where I don't get disrespected.

I'm not sure what camping fees are in Oregon so I can't compare, but this is California and I think it's pretty fair compared to most other campgrounds. Though I'm fairly certain everything is more expensive in California than other states, so that could induce a breathtaking moment... and not just because you're around 6,000' elevation. ;O) Unless a place is truly awful, say if the bathrooms stunk to the high heaven's which he cited they did not or service is inexcusably horrible, then I would give as low as two stars. I know the Rangers at Camp Shelly are outstanding and though the restrooms are rustic for most, it's clean. I respectfully ask that Bob reconsider that missing third star since it's a great campground and I'm going to tell you why. :) This is a wonderful little campground in beautiful S. Lake Tahoe which is operated by the Livemore Parks Department. It's a clean campground and cozy. It's likely not for hard core campers, but it's also not geared toward RV camping either and I think it's for everyone! It is an institution for many families of Livermore. This is a place many pine for the whole year long (no pun intended as there are Jeffrey Pines all about), I am one of those people. The bathrooms are clean and if you're lucky enough to have indoor plumbing (ladies) the outside of the stalls are painted in a lovely mural which is in the photos section. The Rangers are awesome and each Saturday night there is an old fashioned ice cream making/social and most importantly EATING! Campground kids are encouraged to come over and give the ice cream machine a crank. It's a great time to meet other campers and let the kids burn off energy and get a taste of ice cream made the old fashioned way. On the weekends LARPD Rangers offer interactive programs such as Astronomy walks/talks and Wildflower walks/exploration. One thing I especially love is the lack of poison oak that one might find in lower elevations. There are mosquitoes so do bring protection or, if you're like me, DEET it up and wear three layers of clothes. I try to encase my body in the Fortress of Solitude. There is a horseshoe pit, basketball, ping pong table (that was being refurbed last summer, but I hear it's making a comeback for 2012!) and yes....oh yes, volleyball. If you're lucky and stay during the time when Camp Shelly competes with neighboring Camp Concord in a volleyball tourney for the Golden Toilet Seat... well, good times are had by all. The campground is very chill and small enough to where you can feel comfortable letting your kids wander around, dig in the dirt and build forts on the hillside by your camp. It feels like a mini community and is very family friendly. Oh, when I say "family" I'm also including your four-legged canine family. Camp Shelly is dog-friendly and our dog loves it up there. We go up 2-3 times in the season and sometimes see friends we know from school/community. Other times we find familiar faces we see regularly at the Farmer's Market, but may not know personally. It's a cool thing to go back each year and see some of the same faces and it's fun to see the kids grow from year to year. It's always great meeting folks from outside of our community those that come from other cities or other states. There are some great hikes and wonderful places to visit nearby. One of our family favorites is the hike up to Eagle Lake. Our dog LOVES the climb and the jump into a snow-fed Alpine lake. If you're lucky and go early in the season (and winter has been good) sometimes you can have a snowball fight with what little snow is left. Baldwin Beach is right down the main drive from Camp Shelly and Camp Richardson is a 5 minute drive. There is dog-friendly Kiva Beach just down the road in case your pup is a water hound like ours. Another of our favorites is the Camp Richardson Ice cream shop, but remember to ask for a KIDS scoop because the regular scoop is bigger than a toddler's head. The trip up to Angora Lakes is wonderful and our daughter enjoys kayaking or doing the paddle board. Camp Shelly is a place worth checking out. It's become a place of lasting lifetime memories for many people I know, including our own family. As soon as Labor Day passes and Camp Shelly closes we do a countdown to opening day. Even as I write this I can smell the faint vanilla-bark of the Jeffrey pines, hear the ocean like cadence of the breeze making it's way through millions of pine needles, the crackling of our hyptnotic campfire, the sound of crickets lulling me to sleep, kids playing and campers having real exchanges in a simple world. Camp Shelly is a fantastic place to enjoy "just being". I hope you come take a look for yourself and make some lasting memories of your own. :)

We were staying in South Lake Tahoe 2 nights which gave us time to explore and have more fun. What I really wanted to do was go horseback riding. I looked up the corral and learned due to it was off season it was closed. I was so disappointed. Another thing that got my attention was the ice cream shop. My girlfriend came in September and had ice cream so I thought we'd be able to replicate her trip and get ice cream too. Unfortunately they were closed too, my guess was for the season. I didn't look at their website so we could have just come too late in the day. We were there around 2:30pm. We did get a chance to visit the beach. We were lucky and got one of the few spaces that was left. It was a pretty big lot, but for on season its not going to be big enough. I'm guessing there is a second lot that we didn't see. Due to it was off season the facilities were closed. Too bad as there were a lot of people on the beach and bike riding. We stayed short amount of time, but if we were camped out all day I don't know what we'd do. There were some people laying out getting burned. We had jeans and a sweater on and it was a little cool in the shade. Two people ran into the lake and there fried was filming the epic event. Others were just having a picnic and brought blankets and beach chairs to settle in for the day. There was also a restaurant on the beach which was tempting. Then you could get to use their facilities, sit at their outdoor patio on the beach, and have a great view. If they had hot fudge sundaes they'd have my business. Sadly we were on a tight schedule and had to get back to Heavenly Village for a show. The show was so worth it. I highly Reccomend this beach. So tranquil.

Although the sites are a little close together, and the highway noise is noticeable during the day, we thought this was a beautiful setting full of tall trees and situated near a pleasant little creek. We found every member of the staff very helpful and friendly. Just a few minutes away there are cafes and a nice market. Tahoe Keys Marina is about 15 minutes away. There is a little swimming pool where our grandkids enjoyed swimming. We enjoyed campfires and making s'mores. Some of our visitors stayed in the Chalet cabin, which was cute and very clean. We would definitely stay here again.

We are in our 30s-40s trying to have a fun camping time with our kids and our elderly parents. We are not party animals by any means. Admittedly, we may have gotten a little carried away with laughter on our first night. However, we were respectful and compliant with campground rules moving forward. The next morning, we were surprised when a staff member approached us and began with, "Everybody speak and understand English?" This was incredibly offensive and came across as racially insensitive. Still, we gave the benefit of the doubt and assumed they were just trying to ensure clear communication. The staff member then reminded us of the one-vehicle-per-site policy. Though we had multiple campsites booked, we immediately complied and moved extra vehicles to the designated overflow area. Later that evening, another staff member approached our group to remind us of the 10 PM quiet time. We were well aware of the rule and even reminded each other around 9:45 PM to keep our voices down and prepare to wind down. We are a group of professionals -- registered nurses, an attorney, a clinical lab scientist, an architect, an occupational therapist, and an engineer. We fully understand English and have every intention to follow campground guidelines. At 10:12 PM, the same staff member returned, flashing a flashlight into our campsites and loudly calling out, "Campsites # 1, 2, 3 -- it's quiet time! No music! No loud noises! No car alarms!" We politely acknowledged the reminder, reiterated our understanding, and clarified that the car alarm was not from our group. We admitted to the previous night's noise but assured him we were keeping things quiet this time. Despite this, he continued yelling, saying, "I'm not here to argue. I'm just reminding you. If you don't want to comply, I'll call the sheriff and get you all out of my campground." One of our friends calmly and respectfully tried to explain that while we fully acknowledged and respected the rules, we did not appreciate being spoken to in such a disrespectful and public manner -- especially since we were not being disruptive at that time. We even asked him if we were being too loud right now, and he said No. Ironically, he was preaching quiet time while he himself is yelling across the campground. This entire situation could have been handled far more professionally and respectfully. We've always had good experiences with KOA in the past, but this left a lasting negative impression. Sadly, this will likely be our last time staying at this location -- or possibly with KOA altogether. I don't typically write negative reviews, but this experience warranted one
