Another beautiful, relaxing trip to Fallen Leaf. Also have to give kudos to the teams running it this season, everything was pristine, the bathrooms, showers and all other areas were very clean! We barely pulled out of our spot when one of the camp hosts was coming in to get it set up for the next visitor. Thank you all for all the work you do!

This was my second time coming here and I LOVE it. BEARS: We stayed for a couple of days and saw black bears. I thought they were brown bears at first because of the color of their fur, but they're black so it was definitely a relief! Just know that the bears won't hurt you so don't be so scared. They only want food and view the campground as their buffet. They were so used to the campground that they weren't fazed when we were blowing whistles, honking our cars, clanking pans. Our neighbors had their dog's medicine stolen from the bears because they left dog treats with the medicine unsecured. Long story short: leave food in bear lock, and don't worry! BEAR LOCK: The bear lock is a must and it's super sturdy! If closed right, the bears can't get in. Our camp neighbors had a lot of incident with the bears where they ate their food. Make sure to get what you want out of the bear box and lock everything else up, unless you want to see a few bears at your campsite! BEARS AND TENT: Don't leave any food in tent should be something obvious. But the people there also warned us about leaving anything SCENTED in our tent (perfumes, toothpaste, bug spray, etc...). The first day we were definitely paranoid about leaving toothpaste in our tent but honestly, the bears only come for food. They don't hurt you whatsoever. So if you're paranoid, leave scented things in the bear lock. If not, it's fine, nothing happened to us at least! MONTHS WE WENT: Last year we went around August 11th and there were no sightings of bears. We went a few days ago, July 19th-22nd, and there has been bear sightings everyday when we camped. BATHROOMS: Quick note regarding the bathrooms: No mirrors and hand soap! Only toilet and sink. The women's bath room near campsite 104 was clean! There wasn't any problem with it at all. As for the men's bathroom, my boyfriend has mentioned that it was dirty and someone sounded like they were smoking and vomiting in there SHOWERING: The showering system: $1 for 3 minutes. You have to get tokens outside the campground store. 1 token = 3 minutes. There will be showering bathrooms around the campground. You just have to look for one. Inside the showering bathrooms, there's a toilet, sink with a mirror, hangers to hang your stuff up, a bench, and machine to insert your coins by the shower. Make sure you're prepared to go into the shower before inserting your coin! It'll start immediately after you do. The water varies. My family said the shower was REALLY hot, but my experience was okay. It did get SUPER hot in the beginning but eventually durable and cool. EATING: We didn't have experience last time we went so when we were preparing and eating food, a ton of wasps swarmed our area and it was a disaster. This time, we brought along citronella candles and it was a LIFESAVER!!! We brought 3 along to spread it around the tables and it was amazing. Definitely a tip! Entrance Lady: It's nothing that important but I do want to note that one of the younger lady, I forgot her name, was really really rude and upset when talking to us. It was really unpleasant being all happy and on vacation and having someone ruin that few minutes for us. Working at a vacation and tourist area is the wrong job for her. Will definitely be a regular at this campsite!

    Gorgeous views around the lake

Our first stay at fallen leaf was awesome. We did four nights and although the trek to the lake was quite far from our camp spot it was well worth it! Recommend you pack lightly if you are located far from the lake and to find some of the trails that make the trip shorter. Really enjoyed having a close spot to explore other areas of Tahoe. Oh.. and the waterfall at the other side of fallen leaf lake made our trip Also, lots of bear activity at this camp spot so plan ahead and be bear aware!!

I think I would put 5 stars if it weren't for the showers, but this has everything you would expect a campsite to have as campers sleeping in a tent. My friend booked the site for us so I don't really know how the booking process went, but the area we booked was enough to set up two tents (one for her and I and then one for my boyfriend at the time - now husband ). There are bathrooms with toilets stationed in reasonable parts throught the campground. However, not every bathroom had showers, so we had to walk around a bit to find bathrooms with showers. That felt stressful for me personally because of not knowing if a shower area was free or not after walking a certain distance with my toiletries. In any case, the best feature of this campground is how close it is not only to Lake Tahoe, but also to Fallenleaf Lake! That place is stunning with also mountains as a backdrop but much quieter and less people. It is literally a hidden gem. It was unfortunately strangely cold when we went in the summer, but it could be fun to go back when it is warmer and kayak or something. Also something to note is that this campground has a lot of bear sightings/warnings, so that personally was scary to me and is probably the main reason I personally would not go back (even though we did not see any bears, though. We did hear packs of wolves every night which was cool but also a little bit scary). If I were to go back, I would probably rent some kind of camping van/trailer/RV. But I would love to just purchase a day pass or something in the future in order to access the lake!

one of the best campground that I ever experience in Ca. We stay in site 55 and the campsite was big , good shade and space and easy to access bathroom and toliet , well maintained and clean . Watch out for the active bears, they visited out camp site during dinner time and mid nite .

    dog friendly!

This campground and specifically fallen leaf lake, has become so special to my family and I. We are usually able to book a last minute campground - luckily we live close by. Being able to feel safe with our dogs in our campground was such an important factor. While we saw bears every night we stayed here, the front office educates you on your way in as well as providers bear boxes in the camp zone. There's never a lot of noise, but the lake can get busy on the weekends.

Really nice camp ground for cleanliness, minimal crowds, beautiful lake, and yurts! There are not that many yurts so if you would like one and are joining others who are really camping, book early. There was no bedding in the yurts so be prepared to bring your own. The yurts do have electrical outlets and one lamp though! Fyi, very little cell reception for most.

We LOVED everything about this gorgeous site. We will be back many many times more. Gorgeous pines, beautiful blue jays, quite setting. We almost didn't want to go into town. Just stay in the gorgeous Forrest. Excellent staff. Very friendly. Love love love.

I'm not sure what camping fees are in Oregon so I can't compare, but this is California and I think it's pretty fair compared to most other campgrounds. Though I'm fairly certain everything is more expensive in California than other states, so that could induce a breathtaking moment... and not just because you're around 6,000' elevation. ;O) Unless a place is truly awful, say if the bathrooms stunk to the high heaven's which he cited they did not or service is inexcusably horrible, then I would give as low as two stars. I know the Rangers at Camp Shelly are outstanding and though the restrooms are rustic for most, it's clean. I respectfully ask that Bob reconsider that missing third star since it's a great campground and I'm going to tell you why. :) This is a wonderful little campground in beautiful S. Lake Tahoe which is operated by the Livemore Parks Department. It's a clean campground and cozy. It's likely not for hard core campers, but it's also not geared toward RV camping either and I think it's for everyone! It is an institution for many families of Livermore. This is a place many pine for the whole year long (no pun intended as there are Jeffrey Pines all about), I am one of those people. The bathrooms are clean and if you're lucky enough to have indoor plumbing (ladies) the outside of the stalls are painted in a lovely mural which is in the photos section. The Rangers are awesome and each Saturday night there is an old fashioned ice cream making/social and most importantly EATING! Campground kids are encouraged to come over and give the ice cream machine a crank. It's a great time to meet other campers and let the kids burn off energy and get a taste of ice cream made the old fashioned way. On the weekends LARPD Rangers offer interactive programs such as Astronomy walks/talks and Wildflower walks/exploration. One thing I especially love is the lack of poison oak that one might find in lower elevations. There are mosquitoes so do bring protection or, if you're like me, DEET it up and wear three layers of clothes. I try to encase my body in the Fortress of Solitude. There is a horseshoe pit, basketball, ping pong table (that was being refurbed last summer, but I hear it's making a comeback for 2012!) and yes....oh yes, volleyball. If you're lucky and stay during the time when Camp Shelly competes with neighboring Camp Concord in a volleyball tourney for the Golden Toilet Seat... well, good times are had by all. The campground is very chill and small enough to where you can feel comfortable letting your kids wander around, dig in the dirt and build forts on the hillside by your camp. It feels like a mini community and is very family friendly. Oh, when I say "family" I'm also including your four-legged canine family. Camp Shelly is dog-friendly and our dog loves it up there. We go up 2-3 times in the season and sometimes see friends we know from school/community. Other times we find familiar faces we see regularly at the Farmer's Market, but may not know personally. It's a cool thing to go back each year and see some of the same faces and it's fun to see the kids grow from year to year. It's always great meeting folks from outside of our community those that come from other cities or other states. There are some great hikes and wonderful places to visit nearby. One of our family favorites is the hike up to Eagle Lake. Our dog LOVES the climb and the jump into a snow-fed Alpine lake. If you're lucky and go early in the season (and winter has been good) sometimes you can have a snowball fight with what little snow is left. Baldwin Beach is right down the main drive from Camp Shelly and Camp Richardson is a 5 minute drive. There is dog-friendly Kiva Beach just down the road in case your pup is a water hound like ours. Another of our favorites is the Camp Richardson Ice cream shop, but remember to ask for a KIDS scoop because the regular scoop is bigger than a toddler's head. The trip up to Angora Lakes is wonderful and our daughter enjoys kayaking or doing the paddle board. Camp Shelly is a place worth checking out. It's become a place of lasting lifetime memories for many people I know, including our own family. As soon as Labor Day passes and Camp Shelly closes we do a countdown to opening day. Even as I write this I can smell the faint vanilla-bark of the Jeffrey pines, hear the ocean like cadence of the breeze making it's way through millions of pine needles, the crackling of our hyptnotic campfire, the sound of crickets lulling me to sleep, kids playing and campers having real exchanges in a simple world. Camp Shelly is a fantastic place to enjoy "just being". I hope you come take a look for yourself and make some lasting memories of your own. :)

I did not receive an email stating that prior to our arrival. A gentleman came by right when we got there letting us know about the no fires and he told us we could use an electric grill or a charcoal (that we would need to go purchase because we where prepared to cook on an open fire). After an hour of driving around trying to find an affordable charcoal grill, we came back to our site to start dinner and a camp host came over stating we couldn't have charcoal and we needed to put it out. I let the host know a gentleman had told us we could have a charcoal BBQ, she went and found him and he came to our site with an attitude stating that's not the charcoal bbq I told you guys that you could have, it needed to be a Webber or and egg ($200+ BBQ's)! He called the fire Marshall to see if the tiny charcoal bbqs were okay and they said yes! The next morning the same lady and two other men came by our site telling us we CANNOT use the charcoal grills after we had used them the night before and complained that we had a 2nd vehicle and didn't pay for a 2nd vehicle. Mind you when we came in the first day no one was at the front for me to pay for the 2nd vehicle. I was offended that the guy was acting like I was trying to scam them over $12! Overall I felt like we where being harassed and that they did not have clear communication for their campers, they should have sent out an email to all the campers coming in letting them know about the no fires and letting them know what is an acceptable grill or bbq so we could've been better prepared instead of scrambling to figure out how we are going to make our dinners. Our experience in the beginning of March 2026…read more This was our first time coming to Camp Richardson. When I thought of Camp Richardson I've always thought of camping and horseback riding. We were staying in South Lake Tahoe 2 nights which gave us time to explore and have more fun. What I really wanted to do was go horseback riding. I looked up the corral and learned due to it was off season it was closed. I was so disappointed. Another thing that got my attention was the ice cream shop. My girlfriend came in September and had ice cream so I thought we'd be able to replicate her trip and get ice cream too. Unfortunately they were closed too, my guess was for the season. I didn't look at their website so we could have just come too late in the day. We were there around 2:30pm. We did get a chance to visit the beach. We were lucky and got one of the few spaces that was left. It was a pretty big lot, but for on season its not going to be big enough. I'm guessing there is a second lot that we didn't see. Due to it was off season the facilities were closed. Too bad as there were a lot of people on the beach and bike riding. We stayed short amount of time, but if we were camped out all day I don't know what we'd do. There were some people laying out getting burned. We had jeans and a sweater on and it was a little cool in the shade. Two people ran into the lake and there fried was filming the epic event. Others were just having a picnic and brought blankets and beach chairs to settle in for the day. There was also a restaurant on the beach which was tempting. Then you could get to use their facilities, sit at their outdoor patio on the beach, and have a great view. If they had hot fudge sundaes they'd have my business. Sadly we were on a tight schedule and had to get back to Heavenly Village for a show. The show was so worth it. I highly Reccomend this beach. So tranquil.

Don't know with the non refundable policy if we'll make a reservation to come back?

Although the sites are a little close together, and the highway noise is noticeable during the day, we thought this was a beautiful setting full of tall trees and situated near a pleasant little creek. We found every member of the staff very helpful and friendly. Just a few minutes away there are cafes and a nice market. Tahoe Keys Marina is about 15 minutes away. There is a little swimming pool where our grandkids enjoyed swimming. We enjoyed campfires and making s'mores. Some of our visitors stayed in the Chalet cabin, which was cute and very clean. We would definitely stay here again.

We are in our 30s-40s trying to have a fun camping time with our kids and our elderly parents. We are not party animals by any means. Admittedly, we may have gotten a little carried away with laughter on our first night. However, we were respectful and compliant with campground rules moving forward. The next morning, we were surprised when a staff member approached us and began with, "Everybody speak and understand English?" This was incredibly offensive and came across as racially insensitive. Still, we gave the benefit of the doubt and assumed they were just trying to ensure clear communication. The staff member then reminded us of the one-vehicle-per-site policy. Though we had multiple campsites booked, we immediately complied and moved extra vehicles to the designated overflow area. Later that evening, another staff member approached our group to remind us of the 10 PM quiet time. We were well aware of the rule and even reminded each other around 9:45 PM to keep our voices down and prepare to wind down. We are a group of professionals -- registered nurses, an attorney, a clinical lab scientist, an architect, an occupational therapist, and an engineer. We fully understand English and have every intention to follow campground guidelines. At 10:12 PM, the same staff member returned, flashing a flashlight into our campsites and loudly calling out, "Campsites # 1, 2, 3 -- it's quiet time! No music! No loud noises! No car alarms!" We politely acknowledged the reminder, reiterated our understanding, and clarified that the car alarm was not from our group. We admitted to the previous night's noise but assured him we were keeping things quiet this time. Despite this, he continued yelling, saying, "I'm not here to argue. I'm just reminding you. If you don't want to comply, I'll call the sheriff and get you all out of my campground." One of our friends calmly and respectfully tried to explain that while we fully acknowledged and respected the rules, we did not appreciate being spoken to in such a disrespectful and public manner -- especially since we were not being disruptive at that time. We even asked him if we were being too loud right now, and he said No. Ironically, he was preaching quiet time while he himself is yelling across the campground. This entire situation could have been handled far more professionally and respectfully. We've always had good experiences with KOA in the past, but this left a lasting negative impression. Sadly, this will likely be our last time staying at this location -- or possibly with KOA altogether. I don't typically write negative reviews, but this experience warranted one
