Our particular campsite didn't have any shade at all until after 5pm, which was rough In the heat. But most sites have shade and trees. There is also a bear and her two cups that are constantly at the campgrounds. The first night was soo rough because there was a symphony of people yelling at the bears, banging things, air horns, and honking car horns. The bears just don't care at all. From the moment the sun went down to 6am. We also saw them around during the day, stealing sausages off of people's table. Didn't mind as much during the day. Second night started off very loud, but the bear must have gotten some good food, because it was a much quieter night after that. Over all, this camp is absolutely stunning and has amazing views and little hikes. Just be aware that the bear situation is ever present and can potentially cause some sleepless nights. But the beauty is worth it!

Bathrooms are vault toilets, and were well stocked and relatively clean throughout my stay. The campsite host was amazing and made sure we had everything we needed. You can tell he really cared for the campground and would often be tidying things up in the afternoons. As other reviews have mentioned, the campground it right next to the highway. I would highly recommend choosing a campground on the river side, as they are a bit further away from the street. You can still definitely hear the hum of cars going by, but the sounds of the river cover some of it up. Our site (#59) backed up to the river and we spent time swimming, tubing, and floating around every afternoon. It was quite refreshing during the peak of afternoon heat. I noticed that the sites vary widely in size. #59 has enough flat (and a bit rocky) space for one tent, but would have been a tight squeeze for two. Overall, I would recommend the campground if you are looking for a place to stay in the Truckee area (and don't mind the sound of cars passing by). It is close to a lot of day trip options (lakes, hikes, etc.) and the river running behind the campground was a huge plus.

Each site comes with a large bear box, a fire ring with a cooking grate, and a big picnic table. The bathrooms are vault toilets that were clean and well-stocked with toilet paper. There is a busy road nearby that drowns out the sound of the river unless you're right next to the water, but once night falls things calm down nicely. We stayed in a tent trailer while attending a show at the Salty Gebhardt Amphitheater, so we didn't spend a ton of time hanging out at the site, but it still made for a solid basecamp. Would happily stay again.

I'm not sure what camping fees are in Oregon so I can't compare, but this is California and I think it's pretty fair compared to most other campgrounds. Though I'm fairly certain everything is more expensive in California than other states, so that could induce a breathtaking moment... and not just because you're around 6,000' elevation. ;O) Unless a place is truly awful, say if the bathrooms stunk to the high heaven's which he cited they did not or service is inexcusably horrible, then I would give as low as two stars. I know the Rangers at Camp Shelly are outstanding and though the restrooms are rustic for most, it's clean. I respectfully ask that Bob reconsider that missing third star since it's a great campground and I'm going to tell you why. :) This is a wonderful little campground in beautiful S. Lake Tahoe which is operated by the Livemore Parks Department. It's a clean campground and cozy. It's likely not for hard core campers, but it's also not geared toward RV camping either and I think it's for everyone! It is an institution for many families of Livermore. This is a place many pine for the whole year long (no pun intended as there are Jeffrey Pines all about), I am one of those people. The bathrooms are clean and if you're lucky enough to have indoor plumbing (ladies) the outside of the stalls are painted in a lovely mural which is in the photos section. The Rangers are awesome and each Saturday night there is an old fashioned ice cream making/social and most importantly EATING! Campground kids are encouraged to come over and give the ice cream machine a crank. It's a great time to meet other campers and let the kids burn off energy and get a taste of ice cream made the old fashioned way. On the weekends LARPD Rangers offer interactive programs such as Astronomy walks/talks and Wildflower walks/exploration. One thing I especially love is the lack of poison oak that one might find in lower elevations. There are mosquitoes so do bring protection or, if you're like me, DEET it up and wear three layers of clothes. I try to encase my body in the Fortress of Solitude. There is a horseshoe pit, basketball, ping pong table (that was being refurbed last summer, but I hear it's making a comeback for 2012!) and yes....oh yes, volleyball. If you're lucky and stay during the time when Camp Shelly competes with neighboring Camp Concord in a volleyball tourney for the Golden Toilet Seat... well, good times are had by all. The campground is very chill and small enough to where you can feel comfortable letting your kids wander around, dig in the dirt and build forts on the hillside by your camp. It feels like a mini community and is very family friendly. Oh, when I say "family" I'm also including your four-legged canine family. Camp Shelly is dog-friendly and our dog loves it up there. We go up 2-3 times in the season and sometimes see friends we know from school/community. Other times we find familiar faces we see regularly at the Farmer's Market, but may not know personally. It's a cool thing to go back each year and see some of the same faces and it's fun to see the kids grow from year to year. It's always great meeting folks from outside of our community those that come from other cities or other states. There are some great hikes and wonderful places to visit nearby. One of our family favorites is the hike up to Eagle Lake. Our dog LOVES the climb and the jump into a snow-fed Alpine lake. If you're lucky and go early in the season (and winter has been good) sometimes you can have a snowball fight with what little snow is left. Baldwin Beach is right down the main drive from Camp Shelly and Camp Richardson is a 5 minute drive. There is dog-friendly Kiva Beach just down the road in case your pup is a water hound like ours. Another of our favorites is the Camp Richardson Ice cream shop, but remember to ask for a KIDS scoop because the regular scoop is bigger than a toddler's head. The trip up to Angora Lakes is wonderful and our daughter enjoys kayaking or doing the paddle board. Camp Shelly is a place worth checking out. It's become a place of lasting lifetime memories for many people I know, including our own family. As soon as Labor Day passes and Camp Shelly closes we do a countdown to opening day. Even as I write this I can smell the faint vanilla-bark of the Jeffrey pines, hear the ocean like cadence of the breeze making it's way through millions of pine needles, the crackling of our hyptnotic campfire, the sound of crickets lulling me to sleep, kids playing and campers having real exchanges in a simple world. Camp Shelly is a fantastic place to enjoy "just being". I hope you come take a look for yourself and make some lasting memories of your own. :)

The camp hosts were friendly. My only complaint is that we didn't receive notice that briquettes aren't allowed to BBQ our food until 6 minutes before check in via email. If we had known before we had driven 5 hours to get there we could have packed our propane grill . We tried pellets in our BBQ but that didn't work so we ended up ordering pizza. I completely understand the fire safety issue; I just wish the website would have posted the information like it did the construction noise notice then we could have planned better & actually cooked the cooler of food that we had packed.

However, it was already quite crowded for mid-April, so I can only imagine how busy it gets later in the season. There was only one site left, it was one close to the road but I was just stoked to get a spot! We were bummed to get an email 2-3 weeks before the reservation that Goose Meadow wasn't able to open on time this year because of all the snow from our heavy winter. Luckily, I got another email the week of the reservation and they said the campground is able to open on time! That is largely because the camp host and some other forest service workers went out and shoveled shady spots of the campground that still had over 4ft of snow. We met the camp host during our stay and he was really nice! Our site was right across from him and we had no issues with that. We've stayed at Silver Creek and Granite Flat in the past which are the other two campgrounds on 89 between I-80 and Palisades. Goose Meadow is definitely the best out of these three! The sites are more spread out and everything feels more private because the area is more heavily wooded. Plus, there are far fewer sites here than at the other campgrounds which makes it feel more lowkey and quiet. Our site was by the road, so you can hear some cars passing by. We didn't mind as we already expected that since we've camped in this area before. The prime spots are the ones closest to the river, but those fill up fast. You can easily make reservations online. Firewood is for sale from the camp host and there are waterspouts within the campground. Walking distance to the river. Bathroom facilities were nice and very clean. Each site has a fire ring, picnic table, and room for 1-3 cars (varies by site location). Only a 10 min drive to Palisades for spring skiing which you can't beat. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on leash. We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back!

There are some with NO shade, (mostly the ones that are near the lake) so be aware of that. However, the majority of the sites are very shady and feel as private as a campground is capable of being. Lots of space for our pop-up trailer and vehicle. But, the very best part is that you can ride your OHV direct from your campsite to miles and miles of trails. No trailering and driving to the trailhead. The camp hosts are very friendly and helpful and the area is breathtaking. This is a yearly campout for us. Last year we invited friends and taught their teenage sons how to ride a motorcycle and ATV. A great time was had by all. Oh - they don't have water available there, so bring what you need. The bathrooms are pit toilets, kept very clean.

In all my experience at various campgrounds, I have never been welcomed like that. They were genuinely nice people and spent some time getting to know me. So refreshing! I then pulled into my space and I can tell already it's fantastic. The neighbors around me are quiet, nice, and everyone seems respectful. I immediately went out walking and found accessible trails with a small creek that immediately catches your attention. It's twilight now and despite the Park fire (only 100 miles away), it's very quiet despite being almost full. Also, relatively little road noise, considering where it is. This is definitely a magical little place, and I'm very glad I found it. I'll be back for sure.

We came by the camp grounds Friday morning, it was our first time there and we were a bit confused,…read morewe found an area that was empty and no reserved ticket on the post , I ended up calling the office to ask for more info, they told me to pay for the overnight fee and attach the ticket to the post. That's what we did, we then later found out that, the spot we had was reserved, we were a little bummed out, we ended up leaving, tried finding a new spot, no luck, we then found a spot on the boat ramp and parking space that specifically said "overnight parking allowed" we asked a host, an older man. He was very nice, he told us we are allowed to pitch tents, we unpacked, every one was tired, and a woman in her 50-60s pretty short with curly grey hair. Pulled up on a golf cart and started yelling, that tents are not allowed, and she proceeded to yell "if you don't move, I will call the ranger here, he will take all your kids, you will all go to jail, and get fined 2000$ per tent. Per adult" she was extremely rude, we tried to reason with her, she was flat out rude, we were leaving, she started throwing in some cuss word, all my kids were crying, we then talked to a few neighboring rv owners who also experienced a similar issue with this old lady, she needs to be investigated, I read a lot of bad reviews about her. This was such a great campground for families and people looking to unwind. We booked campsite #43…read morethat had tons of extra space, a large driveway big enough for 3-cars, close to showers and bathrooms. There were six of us with 3 tents, but we could have easily fit three more tents. There were multiple bathrooms nearby, plenty of water spigots, and showers nearby. The showers are pretty expensive; $4.00 will only get 3-minutes of shower time and it only takes quarters. This campsite is on a peninsula that's technically over a reservoir, not a lake, but it does not feel like reservoir. The body of water itself is huge and the surroundings are gorgeous. My family and I did multiple hikes around the lake and saw all kinds of wildlife like hawks, squirrels, tadpoles, and lots of coyote tracks. One day we went fishing and saw what it looked like bear scratchings at the base of a tree. See my pictures. We even caught a glimpse of a few eagles near our campsite. A handful of spots were blocked off because it was a nesting area for the eagles. Our favorite spot by far was hanging out on Fashoda Beach, which is a man-made beach area. They've removed all the sharp rocks and put in sand and buoys to keep boats out of it. It's essentially like a giant bay that's kids safe for swimming. I am more of "glamper", but I really enjoyed this campsite with all of its rustic features. I could definitely see myself coming back here with my family for annual camping trips, and I highly suggest coming here at the beginning of summer because the weather was perfect with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. Plus, there weren't many people out here for the summer yet. Did I mention I still had 5G access to my phone, score!
