I really don't write reviews but feel I must in this case just to let others know the mixed nature of my experience with Gilberto in April and May of this year, mainly around the areas of communication and followup around one of the jobs he committed to doing. Gilberto actually did a great job in 2/3s of the commitment: building out a closet and enclosing a wall in a house in Glassell Park. For those jobs, he priced them reasonably (not a bargain, but in line with other bids I got) and did a reasonably careful job in completing them, on time and budget with materials and labor. For these jobs, he certainly earned 4+ star rating. However, it's when it came to the other 1/3rd of the agreed-upon work that his work and responsiveness has been disappointing and less than fully professional. That is for redoing some hardwood floors after removing an old floor heater near a living room and hallway wall (see attached pictures). While admitting he wasn't a hardwood specialist, he nevertheless said he could do the job, and I also felt that with him having at one point been licensed with the state CSLB as a painter that he'd be able to come through both with the installation component, and also with the matching the stain component (being someone as a painter who applies liquid to hard surfaces so they match and/or look professionally done). So after a couple cost-plus additions (right size wood, sanding, etc), he was able to install the same size hardwood to match and completed the living room side so it is a very workmanlike match to the existing hardwood (as seen in attached picture). However, on the hallway side (picture of floor and wall in progress), while he was able to match the wall, paint, molding etc, he was unable to match the stain color as he did in the living room. I asked him to redo the first job and he came up with something way too shifted toward red (seen in attached picture). Then, on a 3rd try, he had Francisco come in and redo it and still it didn't match. In fact, not only was the color wrong, but apparently in staining it, they didn't lacquer or incompletely varnished it and upon a quick swiffer mop it came out looking like it was falling apart (see picture). Gilberto indicated that likely Francisco hadn't applied the lacquer, which is true, but also the color still was far from matching in an acceptable way. So now, toward the end of June, Gilberto had indicated he could come over and redo the stain and lacquer, and after some scheduling misses, just stopped responding to my texts (4 of them), calls (about 3) and emails (2). And while I understand that coming back a 4th time to make good on a smaller job is a pain in the A for anyone, it doesn't seem right that you'd just ignore a client who paid on time and fully for the work and change orders done and is just asking that the job be completed in a workmanlike manner. I certainly know in my profession that if I didn't reply to a client's calls, texts and emails that I'd soon have no clients and hope that Gilberto will still make the effort to make this situation right. So for now I'll consider this review only partially completed and if Mr. Bizarro decides to get in touch with me and finish the job he started, I should be able to update my review accordingly. read more

I was referred to Gilberto by a friend who has been using him for quite some time. He came highly recommended and did not disappoint. We started out with a repair/replacement of rotted wood underneath a window. I was originally quoted by another handyman service $1400 stating that they had to replace the entire window, that it was a custom size and would take 5 weeks to order. Gilberto and his employee Felix were able to take out and preserve the original window, repair the wood, and repaint it all in one day for less than a third of my original $1400 estimate. Then we moved on to the rest of the house. There were loads of minor things that needed repair including holes left by the electrician, stuck windows, walls that needed resurfacing, faucets replaced, flooring installed, and the entire interior of the house repainted, as well as the front and back patios scraped and repainted. Overall, a whole lot of work to be done. Not only was he fairly priced, honest and on time, but he is thoughtful as well, letting me if there was a change of plans ahead of time. As the house is empty was being readied for new renters, after a few days, I simply gave him a key and let him go to work. He always informed me when he arrived and I was able to simply meet here there at my convenience. Good work, a great attitude, fair pricing, and always a smile. We needed to find someone to help us put our guest bathroom back together after a flood, and since the flood happened a couple of weeks before we were having a party, we had to find someone fast. I've had very good luck finding good contractors and such on Yelp, so I started my search here, but all the well-reviewed handymen in my area were booked for weeks in advance - it was challenging just to schedule a couple of them over to give me estimates, so with a week left before the party I decided to take a chance on someone who wasn't listed on Yelp. Yes, fellow Yelpers, it was scary, but I'm actually glad I did....Gilbert did a good job with the repairs, he did quality work for a fair price, and we're totally satisfied with the results, but good work at a fair price alone does not a 5-star review deserve, you gots to do something extra to earn that 5th star, and Gilbert definitely went above and beyond to earn his. Mostly due to my procrastinating we didn't start the work until a couple of days before the party, so we weren't able to fully put the bathroom back together before the event (that would have been impossible for anyone to do given the timeline), but Gilbert did what was necessary to ensure the bathroom was ready for our party, then returned the next week to finish the work. He was punctual, professional, and accommodating; he ensured we were satisfied with the work, and offered to return (no-charge) if anything needed touching-up, helped us out with a couple of small jobs that weren't included in the original scope of work (upgraded electrical outlet to GFI, and re-grouted the shower in our master bathroom) and didn't even complain about having to connect and disconnect the sink/vanity before/after the party - I will definitely be working with him again! The work included replacing drywall for the bathroom walls and ceiling, re-installing the vanity/sink, light-fixture, mirror, and towel-rack, and replacing shower tile that was broken to replace the pipe that burst. That said, Gilbert said he is an all around handyman and can help with any home repairs or projects. read more

I was doing a simple faucet replacement when, of course, the pipe in the wall broke off. But I didn't stop there, I pulled 2 pieces of tile off and bent the other pipe. At this point I decided maybe I should get some help. I found Gilbert here on yelp and called him. He was my second call, the first guy never called back. Anyway, fortunately for me Gilbert picked up the phone and said he could come over in 40 minutes. Which he did. Handyman from hell. Gave this gentleman clear instructions as to what was needed to be done . Had mirrors in a large bathroom that needed to be moved .He put them in the wrong place I reminded him of where I wanted them, he responded "ah ok". a few minutes later the mirrors are in the right place BUT !! there is a chunk on the left lower corner side broken off. I said "WHATS THIS ? ! " he responded with a blank stare . He repaired tub faucet but left adjoining tile with big hole in it , he will leave screw-ups up for you to catch. He wont bring it up till you do. Mirror cant be replaced size doesn't exist anymore, this is a double wash basin , need a pair, replacement is $ 119 each about $300 tax and installation total. Will try to provide pictures but having camera issues. After seeing I was not happy with his work,he actually cleaned up after repairing his screwup on the tile. Before that he would leave a god awfull mess.He gave me a $20 discount after all this .If you like crappy work,and getting screwed over, this is your go to guy, otherwise hire at your own risk. P.S.
