Not very friendly place to say the least when we decided not to enroll our kids after 1 month trial.

Official TEMA students starting the week of 7/13/26…read more My goodness, this is a very delayed update after our initial trial class. My girls were so excited to start, they thought they had class the week before. They couldn't wait to put on their uniforms and be actual students in class. Each time we go to class, I am simply amazed at how great Master Yoo and Master Y are with the kids. Master Yoo promotes respect for self and others, and does it with so much grace. Even though the yelling out/battle crys/ and paddle slapping is very loud and alarming at times, it really gets the kids in focus mode. This is definitely a great way to release some pent up frustration/anger/or just get all that antsy energy out in a positive environment. I have sat in larger classes where black belt student helpers act as assistant demonstrators/instructions for the lower belt levels. They all have a cool and calm demeanor and really do a great job being role models to those who are just learning. I truly hope my girls get to that level one day. So far in class, they have worked on different lower body and upper body moves, along with balancing. Master Yoo always tries to spook the kids mid way to see if they are actually focused. I find it quite entertaining to what how he teaches. He reminds me of an animated cartoon character but in human form. My girls really his funny expressions but have also learned to focus when it is necessary. On 7/28/26, they got to break a wooden board (2 boards for $5 or 1 for $3). My girls did a smashing job and loved every minute of it. The girls have only been doing 2 classes per week since 7/13/26 and I already see a lot of improvements. I have encountered so my friends of their who took TKD before, and did not having raving reviews like I do about TEMA. They truly know what they're doing and care about their students. Truly professionals. If anyone is interested in TKD for their kids, please give them a try. You seriously have nothing to lose and everything to gain. This has been a great experience for both myself and my girls. We are so blessed to have great Masters guiding us in this journey. Lots of thanks for an ongoing wonderful experience, Master Yoo and Master Y!

Enter Taekwondo Spirit. Master Lee = Amazing. We chose this studio over two years ago and I have watched my kids grow in body, mind and Spirit (no pun intended). The staff here from Master Cyril in the older days through the current staff have been nothing short of great. They are delicate where they need to be and tough when needed. They very much specialize in children. The studio has built and maintains a community feeling. They have definitely served the youth of La Mirada and the surrounding community by teaching discipline, confidence and self defense. They even participate in local tournaments if you are ready and they echo that sentiment. The sport of Taekwondo is definitely a great introduction to martial arts that develops flexibility, strength and balance. I'm very appreciative to Taekwondo Spirit for what my children have learned through them. Humility seems to flow through this place with nothing but respect given by and to everyone. The only "negative" I could even consider about the location is that the parking lot could get tight in the afternoon hours with the neighboring gym.

I had tried another studio in Whittier who are through the Regional Center (Victory Tae Kwon Do) but unfortunately even free lessons through were not worth it in comparison to here. My son was trained by master Cyril for about 1 year before their lack of availability and our school schedule conflicted to the point of no longer being able to fit us in. The studio is small so understandable, just sad. I realize teaching autistic kids is not their specialty, but I had gone to one other local studio in La Habra that basically turned us away because they didn't want to do the hands on work it takes to teach a child that lacks imitation skills, while another in Fullerton was extremely overpriced and for only 15 minute sessions in addition to being too far. I hope to come back to this studio soon if they have the availability.

When we first enrolled him in…read moretaekwondo, he was even too embarrassed to introduce himself or say his age in front of others. He has now been attending for about 10 months, and looking back, I truly feel it was one of the best decisions we've made. The biggest change is his confidence. He now introduces himself proudly, speaks up, and expresses his thoughts wherever he goes. Our entire family has been amazed by how much he has grown. Beyond learning taekwondo techniques, he has developed confidence, discipline, respect, and good posture. I've heard that many taekwondo schools focus heavily on games and entertainment to keep young children engaged. This school is different. They don't simply keep the kids busy with activities--they teach real taekwondo. The instructors emphasize discipline, proper etiquette, respect, focus, and correct technique. For our family, those values are far more important than simply having fun. The Master and the Manager genuinely care about each child and give them personal attention. You can tell they want every student to learn taekwondo the right way, not just earn the next belt. I especially recommend this school for children around 5 or 6 years old. Those early years are such an important time for building confidence and character. I honestly believe that if we had missed this opportunity, my son might still be the shy little boy who was afraid to speak up. We plan to continue here for many years. I've also heard that staying in martial arts through the teenage years can make a huge difference, and I can already see why. If you're looking for a school that values discipline, respect, manners, focus, and authentic taekwondo training--not just games and entertainment--I highly recommend this place. On top of that, their tuition is very fair and reasonable for the quality of instruction and personal attention each child receives. We truly feel that every dollar has been worth the investment.

This review has been long overdue, and I'm so glad I finally had the chance to write it…read more About a year ago, I decided I wanted my boys to start jiu-jitsu. As a mom, I believe it's so important for children to learn basic self-defense not because I expect something bad to happen, but because I want them to have the confidence and skills to protect themselves if they ever need to. At first, my boys were nervous and intimidated. We visited a few schools before making a decision, but from the moment we walked into Teragi, we knew this place was different. Everyone made us feel like family. The professors and coaches are exceptional not only because of their experience and skill, but because they genuinely care about every child. They encourage, support, and meet each child where they are. I especially want to mention my youngest. Jiu-jitsu didn't come naturally to him at first, and he struggled to understand the techniques. The professors and coaches were incredibly patient and never made him feel like he was behind. They allowed him to learn at his own pace, and now it's amazing to see how much his confidence and skills have grown. That patience meant so much to our family. There's no pressure for kids to be the best. Every child learns differently, and the professors and coaches truly understand that. Since we homeschool, Teragi has become more than just a place to train. My boys have made wonderful friendships, and we've found an incredible community. I also have to mention how clean the academy is! It never has that old gym smell and is always welcoming. I've watched both of my boys grow not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. They're more confident, disciplined, and respectful. If you're on the fence about jiu-jitsu because you don't like the idea of your child being on the ground, I completely understand. I felt the same way. But the reality is that many real-life self-defense situations end up on the ground, and knowing what to do can make all the difference. Thank you, Teragi, for creating such an incredible environment for our children. We are so grateful to be part of the Teragi family, and I couldn't recommend this academy more.

The owners, professors, and coaches have cultivated a superb gym culture. This gym is safe, friendly, and supportive. The facility is modern and clean, and they've invested in a foam block subfloor beneath the mats for softer landings. As far as I know, this is the only gym in the area that offers women-only classes four times per week and a bi-monthly community open mat for gentlemen 40 years and older. My kids train here after school 4-5 days a week, and they love it. The kids' professors and coaches are experienced and amazing teachers. I'm especially thankful for the young coaches who were so patient and kind to my boys when they were hesitant and shy after first starting. And my pocketbook is especially thankful for the discounted rates for additional family members. If you're looking for a place where the whole family can train, grow, and feel welcome, I can't recommend Teragi highly enough.
