I had the opportunity on my day off from work to come visit this park in all of its beauty. My first boat outing was with their seasonal ranger Jewell West, she was very knowledgeable and personable! She was definitely passionate about the eagles, the park, our beautiful state, and the preservation of our state's natural wonders. On our outing we saw nearly 16 eagles, plenty of osprey, and many other native species. It was a very enjoyable way to spend the morning, and a very beautiful and relaxing ride! That afternoon I came back for the history of the lake boat ride, it was shorter than the eagle spotting venture, but was also with seasonal ranger West. She painted a unique picture about the geological origins of the lake and its troubled past. It was very interesting, and I really enjoyed hearing about it while actively seeing it in person. The facilities at the state park are brand new and they are amazing. They have very enriching and hands on ways to experience this park's history and biological elements. Many of their facilities are brand new due to increased funding and repairs after a tornado a few years ago. The flora and fauna of the lake are immensely beautiful. This place is most definitely a hidden gem for west Tennessee! I look forward to coming back this July for the 250th anniversary of the USA celebration.

From park slides and swing days with the kids when they were little, to adventures in the wooded trail in the hidden areas, softball games, Pokemon Go days, to parades, 4th of July celebrations, the list goes on and on. I've probably walked 500 miles or more on these trails. The trails around the park are fantastic. You meet so many great people on any trek around the park. They keep the ponds stocked well with fish and there is a dock that takes you out to the middle of the largest pond. Please pay attention to the catch limits though. There is a dog park, many covered pavilions, grills to use for cooking, a very cool, all inclusive playground for the kids, and tons of baseball fields. They do Christmas lights around the Holidays that are pretty. The police presence is always pretty high. There is usually a cop in the park at all times and they do not play if you step out of line here. I dig that. We are very lucky to have this safe space for all families to visit and have fun. Yes, 5 stars...not because it has great fancy agility training equipment - because it doesn't - but…read morebecause sometimes places get 5 stars due to the demand/need in an area regardless if it has a bunch of whistles and bells. That's exactly what the Barking Lot is, it's a simple little dog park. The beauty of it is that it is downtown where virtually no one has any backyard space, so having somewhere to take your dog to run around is nice. This is especially true when it's 20 degrees out and you want to put your energy towards staying warm and drinking hot cocoa versus walking your dog. That's exactly what happened to me - it was freezing and I took my foster puppy here to do her business and was so thankful that I was able to just let her run around while I mentally channeled a warm sunny place. It hit me then how lucky downtowners are to have a little dog park. Like I said it doesn't have a bunch of features, but it's decent sized and well fenced. I have only been here in the winter so there isn't a lot of grass, but the ground always seems well taken care of and leveled after rain causes puddles and holes. It also is always stocked with poop scoop bags and has a nearby trash can. Usually no one is here (perhaps busier in the spring?), but the few people and dogs I've encountered here have been exceptionally nice. There are also two benches for people to sit while their dogs run around and it is well-lit at night!

A little rough....no shade. Next time I'm downtown I'll just drop be down to the Riverfront....DT…read moreMemphis is not great for dogs.
