TDLR: Not cheap, but an excellent *value*. Wish I had done it earlier! Andy was out at our house two weeks or so ago to perform an energy audit. I was specifically interested in getting an audit to help figure out the stack ranking of future energy improvements to make (per-ROI), and I wanted the audit to be performed by someone with no conflict of interest (as you could have with someone who is also selling specific improvement services). Andy perfectly fit the bill: he was easy to schedule, and showed up on time with his equipment to perform the audit. When he was finished, he verbally walked me through what he'd found, with clear explanations that were scaled to my level of existing knowledge. He also sent along a PDF report detailing all of this same information via email, containing even more detail (IR pictures of some of the problem spots, for example) and a summarized recommended course of action for the various areas. One of the issues he identified was a big deal: I had a 2 stage AC (Trane XL18i) with a variable speed blower installed in November 2014. I had replaced the Trane thermostat (very problematic: RMA'ed 2 or 3 of them due to LCD issues) with an Ecobee 3 (probably 2015 or early 2016). Andy found that -- while the compressor was switching between stage 1 and stage 2 -- the blower fan was only ever switching between off and a low speed mode. His report included airflow measurements to show that it was only ever running in this slow speed mode, which probably explained why it seemed to take longer than expected to bring down house temperatures. We'd previously just chalked it up to 'it is so hot outside'. I had even had multiple maintenance checkups on the system on an annual maintenance subscription (along with work to repair a coolant leak when cooling performance was clearly impaired), but none of those visits had ever flagged this fan speed issue. This one issue by itself more than justified Andy's audit! I just wish that I had done this earlier and been able to avoid running a slightly-neutered AC system for 2+ years. read more

Hvac systems allude me, but Andy walked around my home and broke it down for me. After about 45min I had a full page of notes of things, large and small, that I could do to increase my energy efficiency. We then took a look at the list and prioritized. From solar screens, to sealing the space in between the vent and the actual duct, I'm excited to get to work and save money this summer! The City of Austin requires sellers conduct and energy audit and provide the results to a buyer. In a contract on my home, I had to get this done pretty quickly. On Labor Day, I scheduled an audit on their website for 8:00 the next morning. I didn't know if they would get it in time, but Trace was there bright and early the next morning. Andy Pell visited our home, was precisely on time. We enlisted his service not for the requisite sellers' energy audit, but due to ongoing high-humidity and consequent pervasive odor. Andy spent a full two hours pouring over our structure, top to bottom, outside and in. He brought with him all the tools of his trade. Andy's price was extremely reasonable; I would have paid him double. The follow up output was a nine-page, well-formatted document with his findings and prioritized recommendations, interleaved with onsite photographs.
