I have to agree with the previous Yelper....something seems "off." I grew up in SW MI & was beyond thrilled to find an Organic farm - a first for Berrien County - at least in my 40 years of existence. We drove up and there was really old & falling down sign, which is fine - but it was a bad first impression. The worst was that they advertised that they STILL had you-pick tomatoes, peppers, & eggplant but the tomatoes were mostly fully rotten. You could barely find any non-rotten peppers either. In between the growing lanes (where you walked) it was FILLED to the brim with weeds & difficult to maneuver. It was really unmaintained, especially for a you-pick section. The apples we saw on the trees looked completely rotten & bug infested. I asked for this year's cider & they hadn't pressed any yet, nor do they have any left from last year. No donuts, again, even though the owner stated there would be donuts in his phone update message. I decided to support this business & buy some of their Organic Apple Cider Vinegar but it was weird because I had to ask for the cashier to get me a fresh container of vinegar - not just the display bottle that had been sitting out for who knows how long (it looked all battered and warm). This was so much fun. My friends and I drove up in the morning and got to walk around the orchard, pick plenty of apples and walked away with almost 25 lbs of organic apples for $20! When we first arrived, we didn't know what to do or where to go as there was a u-pick sign but no one in the barn so we just parked and started picking. Eventually the owner came by and was really nice. It was rainy in the morning so we were the only ones who were there. This spot is definitely a spot for apple picking, not for hay rides, apple cider donuts, face painting...while all those can be fun, I wanted to pick apples and move on with my day and Earth First Farms let me do just that. Highly recommended for people who just want apples for a great price. read more

As a midwest girl, I grew up with delicious apple cider. Living in Chicago, you don't have access to much unless you seek it out at farmers markets, hippie stores, and some fancy restaurants. I had a cocktail at the Handle Bar with cider, and it was so delicious that I asked to see their jug. Turns out it's from this local grower. Since then I've bought a few gallons at Farmers Markets (Logan Square, though they tell me that they sell at others) and it's always a treat. Definitely recommend! read more

Wonderful in every way! Friendly staff, baskets are provided for u-picking, and there's a great selection of apples (today there was golden delicious, red delicious, and jonagold). All organic! Plus, it's a beautiful drive out to the farm from Chicago. The apples themselves are beyond delicious, great for eating as they are, or for use in baking. They have some u-pick pumpkins, too, and some homemade cider that you can purchase (really delish). Be sure to bring bags or boxes to transfer your apples to before you head home (their baskets stay there). Beautiful orchard, fun time, and they accept all forms of payment. Well, I must be the first. Obviously. If you're waiting for apple season to begin or you're dissatisfied with the not-so-fresh varieties in the grocery, then begin salivating for Earth First. I first starting buying their apples 2 years ago at the Green City Market in Chicago. They gave away a nice canvas bag every time I purchased a bunch. More than that, they're the only "organic" apple sold at the Green City. Sold. About the apples I will eat all the way to the core: The "Ida Red" variety can be turned into your favorite apple pie or it can be eaten alone because it's just enough tart, crisp and sweet. But, you'll be won over time and time again by the Macintosh. Soft, tangy, white flesh. (Wish it was apple season?) Where can you get Earth First apples AND cider? Apples: Their orchard in Berrien Center, MI. When in season, their cider can be found at Green Grocer, The Heartland Cafe, Dill Pickle Coop, the markets. You can also find the apples if you participate in Irv and Shelley's Fresh Picks CSA. My last, and most important, testimony: I used to pick apples southwest of Chicago on my gram's farm. Earth First's taste like the ones I picked way back when. If I can recreate that nostalgia, then it's worth the bike ride to Green City to get them...every week. read more

The word organic sucked us in but we were very disappointed. This farm was not organized. When you arrive there isn't any signs to give you directions. The employees tell you which apples are where but there should be signs saying which field of trees are what. In the field, you walk through uncut long grass to find apples that look rotten and eaten by worms... hence organic. I thought their wooden baskets were cute however, I would recommend taking a wagon or something you could pull your apples in. I left with only a few apples and went to another farm which we had a much better experience at. read more

It's kind of a ritual for me now, picking up apples from the farm in Berrien Springs, every two weeks from September to just before Thanksgiving. As a CSA member, it is both a great value and a great pleasure to have so many ORGANIC and delicious apples from Earth First. This year, the BF and I were both particularly fond of the Empires and the Mutsus, but enjoyed all of the apples, staggered out over the fall. I love to pick apples, but it is also a nice convenience to have them picked for me and all I need to do is take a pleasant ride out to the country. I think I've been a member for about five years and look forward to many more. The cider is delicious, a bit too sweet for my taste, but it can be fermented due to the way that it is processed, so that's a plus. Also, it can be boiled down and used as a sweetener in the Thanksgiving cranberry relish. A gallon comes as part of the CSA share, which is just another holiday time bonus.
