I was gifted a few prepped meals a couple weeks ago. Truly a gift and surprise!! All of the meals were delicious and thoughtfully put together. I'm not much of a beef eater but the beef stir fry was amazing! I'm glad it was just me so I could enjoy multiple servings to myself! These ingredients are not lacking! When looking for a cooking prep/meal delivery service I came upon Madison & Rayne and decided to "shop local" and give them a chance. I'm glad I did! They have really great food, easy to follow recipes, and a helpful social media team! I've ordered 3 more times since my first order and enjoyed all the meals. Their flatbreads are fabulous and all the other dishes have had unique flavors and things you wouldn't think to make yourself. Their offerings rotate fairly regularly, so there's always something new to try! Another pro is that you can order as much or as little as you want. I appreciate not having to order 4 meals if I don't need them. The only downside is that they don't include the amounts needed to make the recipe again on their cards incase you want to recreate your meal. You have to have your orders in by Saturday and they deliver Tuesday the following, which is totally understandable for a small company. ***Bonus points for the recycling of materials! The menus are incredibly innovative (but approachable); the ingredients are fresh and beautifully prepped and measured; instructions are literally fail-safe. I've used the service for years for everything from weeknight meals for my family to Thanksgiving dinner (twice) to dinner parties. I've never had a dish I didn't love (and my food bar is HIGH!). The reason I order is so I can have quick, healthy meals for my family during the week. The ingredients are pre chopped, pre marinated and ready to go. Blue Apron had too much prep work for me. Shelling my English peas? No thank you! Madison & Rayne offers a variety of flavor profiles - some Indian, some Italian, some Asian. The meals are complex flavor wise but easy to put together. My kids love cooking with me now. I can't recommend highly enough! And their customer service is beyond great - I emailed them at 8pm about a technical issue and had a response within the hour. And delivery windows have been met every time I have ordered. The calorie counts that go with the meals are very helpful when deciding what to order for the week. There is no required order so when you're planning to be out a lot, you can order less. The salads are meals - and they are packaged with the dressing in a separate little cup inside the box with the salad so I can just grab it and take it to work with me. I really don't know if I can say enough good things about Madison & Rayne. I've been a semi-frequent customer since August '13. I originally gave them a try because I was researching meal delivery services in Chicago for some clients. I fell in love w/ the meals & the customer service, and have continued to use them since. I love to cook. From scratch. When I have time. And energy. But time & energy are at a premium in my life. 12 hour workdays are more of the norm in my life than I'd like, and I can't keep ordering from grubhub every other night. Enter meal deliveries. There's several in Chicago. One was very affordable if you bought more servings, but was a little more carb heavy than I like. Another just lacked meals that appealed to me. I even tried a New York based one, but the inflexibility of the menu, and the excess packaging for over-nighted, slightly frozen food was a big miss. Plus you had to do so much prep, I would have been better off with one of my own recipes. I feel like Madison & Rayne appeal to people : * who "can't" cook but still want home cooked meals more frequently * who'd rather pay for the convenience of prepped meals, so they can spend more time doing something else Advantages of Madison & Rayne: * Your ingredients are already prepped. Veggies chopped, sauces made. You just need to mix, assemble, season, and cook. * Most of the packaging is recyclable or reusable. The food saver bags & plastic containers (#5 plastic) can be rinsed and thrown in recycling. The big plastic bag that holds each meal's ingredients isn't supposed to be recycled (I believe). And everything is delivered in a tote w/ freezer packs that you return to M&R on your next delivery day. * All the containers are labeled to correspond w/ the recipe card. So item A gets mixed with dressing B. C, D and E get cooked together then put on top of F. Etc. Takes any guesswork out if there's multiple sauces involved. * The menu changes somewhat frequently. There's "always" items that tend to stick around for an extended period of time. And "seasonal" items that change about every two weeks or so. * Most of their dishes have a vegetarian option listed on the ordering menu. If there's item that sounds interesting, but a vegetarian option isn't listed, you can still request one. * Delivery is free. * You can order as little as one serving of a dish. Many other services require at least two servings of every dish, which can be a downer if you live alone, and want more variety of single dishes, versus more servings of a limited variety. (Wow, awkward worded sentence for the win.) * Customer Service. See more further down. Disadvantages of Madison & Rayne: * Per serving costs are higher than some of other services. Sure, i can order a burger from GrubHub cheaper, but that's before delivery fees & tip, plus it'll be lukewarm. I could make it myself from scratch for cheaper....but that takes me back into finding time & energy. You're paying not just for the food, but the -convenience- of having a recipe created, prepared, and delivered to your home. The price may not fit everyone's budget. * If you fall in love with a dish, and eat it every week for what feels like eons, because you're one of those people who gladly/happily eats the same thing on a regular basis....it can suddenly disappear on you. Sure the lemongrass coconut soup came back for awhile....but where are my beloved butternut squash ravioli? WHERE ARE THEY? Ahem. * The print on the recipe cards can be a little small when it's a recipe that involves more than a few steps. Actually the printing is always small, it's just harder to read when there's more text on the card. Melanie & Chef Josh are great about taking care of their customers. Aside from occasionally offering last minute "extra" meals on Mondays (delivery day is Tuesday), they interact w/ customers regularly via social media. Not just "thanks for the tweet" but actual interaction, actively listening to feedback. I tweeted my sadness over an aioli container opening & spilling in my delivery. They reached out and offered to replace it. I declined as it seemed to much hassle for just one ingredient and I could easily use a bottled salad dressing in the brussels sprouts slaw. Next morning, there's a tote with a big container of the aioli on my doorstep, along with a recipe card on how to make my own (as I had expressed how much I loved this one particular ingredient, and wanted to try to recreate it for other uses). What other meal delivery service goes that far out for their customers? Of course I tweeted once about offering my services as a meal tester, but they never did follow up with me. I tried this service last night for the first time and was so happy with it that I felt compelled to write a review this morning. I was a little skeptical at first as I'm a HORRIBLE cook, there are a lot of good restaurants in my area, etc. And when I say horrible just to level set I once put the filling on the bottom and the crust on the top of a two ingredient lemon bar mix. But Madison & Rayne had great instructions and organization that even I couldn't screw up. The food was quick and delicious. It was also really fun and almost felt like I was at a cooking class...I had all tools and ingredients with an instructor (the note cards) telling me exactly what to do. I think the coolest part is that I was able to learn new techniques that I can use cooking other things in the future (i.e., the way I cooked the tilipia) I'm really excited about this service and can't wait to try it again! I'm loving using Madison and Rayne to help me get dinner on the table a few nights a week. I am a single mom of a 6 year old boy, so preparing dinners becomes this daunting task and not fun at all. I would get lazy and order take out most nights. A few weeks ago I started cooking M & R dinners and not only do I feel so much better about what I'm feeding him, I'm happy to feel like I'm still doing some of the cooking and cleanup is beyond easy and minimal. It was okay. Cooking was at a minimum though... almost everything was already premixed, precut or precooked. The best meal out of three was the steak with a puree but once again I wish I got to make the puree and it wasn't just in a dish that I microwave for 30 seconds. The blackened tilapia was way too salty. The corn fritter batter was already made, the aioli way already made, all the components to the duck tacos recipe were already cooked and premade... you get the idea. Most of the dishes were simply put premade salad in bowl, put premade dressing on salad, mix. Maybe it was just way too easy and simple for my cooking level but it was basically ordering takeout and having to combine all the parts of the dish yourself. I don't think I'll be ordering from them again. I have tried other services like this one and they were way more involved. The hardest part about Thanksgiving at my house is getting the timing of the various dishes lined up. Madison & Rayne makes that so entirely easy with their Thanksgiving meal. Each dish is diced and organized to make it easy and the whole meal very manageable. The dishes were also incredible. I have been wow'ed! When I received a gift certificate to Madison & Rayne, I thought it would be similar to the numerous other meal kit services we've tried some of which are quite good. But, Madison & Rayne was so much better! The prep work is done (no chopping, etc), the ingredients are local (and seem fresher), and you commit to the order only a few days ahead of time which is much better for unpredictable schedules than the week in advance that many others require. After trying Blue Apron and other meal services, I wasn't keen on trying another but was gifted a free meal by my sister (who knows how awful I am at cooking). With a 14 month toddler, multiple intolerances (dairy, soy and gluten) and a job, Grocery shopping and cooking are inconveniences which have led to a series of basically 4 "safe" meals on an endless rotation. Madison and Rayne has saved me from this! The meals are clearly marked with allergens and can be made to fit your family's needs. Excellent. A few weeks back, I had an "aha moment"... My friend had given me a Madison & Rayne meal kit: mini tarts with fresh cheeses and exotic onion mix (to caramelize) served with Amish chicken. At first I was skeptical. Why would anyone would pay someone to prep and deliver a meal kit to them? (I am a pretty "do-it-yourself" kind of girl when it comes to cooking my meals). However, on this particular Wednesday after work, my boyfriend and I had a TON to do on his house plus an entire apple tree to pick (before the squirrels got to them)! We powered through the housework part and then moved outside. It was a beautiful day where the fall breezes start yet the summer air is still present. Knowing we had a M&R meal kit in the fridge, we completely picked the apple tree, while basking in the autumn scene, taking time to slow down after all the hard work of the day... feel the breezes, smell apples in the air, and even fend off a few bees! When we came back inside after our "near pastoral" apple adventure, I was able to whip up an amazing gourmet meal for us in just 15 minutes. I even caramelized the apples we just picked along with the exotic onions (to go on the tarts with melted cheese), and it was TO. DIE. FOR! Moral of my circuitous story? Having the M&R meal kits available, frees YOU up to do so much more with your limited hours of time after work... You can get a ton of mundane tasks knocked out, then still have time left to unwind and "smell the apples" (so to speak), creating memories rather than toiling over a hot stove for hours. You get to eat a gourmet meal from the comfort of your own home, made with the freshest ingredients (good for body and soul!), ready in no time. This is a great company! My husband and I have enjoyed 3 of their meals so far. Each has been simple to prepare, full of fresh, high-quality ingredients, and quite tasty! For me, I usually cook 3-4 of our meals a week and wanted to maintain that despite having a newborn at home. Madison and Rayne has helped me continue to have fresh and healthy meals at home without the stress of planning, shopping, prepping, cooking, and cleaning. It's so much better than the alternative of ordering carry out a few nights a week. The directions are always incredibly easy to understand and the ingredients are conveniently packaged and labeled. Pulling the ingredients out is a cinch since each meal is kept separate in its own bag. And clean up is always equally simple. You just rinse out the containers and plop them back in the insulated tote to be returned the following week. Delivery has been incredibly punctual both times, and the gentleman who dropped off the meals couldn't be nicer. The only reason I rate 4 out of 5 stars is for value. I do find Madison and Rayne to be a better value than their competition as a) they're a local business, which is always prefer to support, even if it costs a bit more b) their ingredients are of high quality and often come from local farmers c) you aren't committed to a subscription on a weekly basis. However, I don't think this service is economical for larger families. For me and my husband to eat, I pay roughly the same for a Madison and Rayne meal as I would if I went to the store and bought everything for an average weeknight meal. The only difference here is that I usually have leftovers (/additional servings) when I cook, whereas meals from Madison and Rayne are portioned per person, so there never are leftovers. With that said, most of the portions are filling, but we did have one meal where we both found ourselves still a bit hungry afterward. They do offer additional sides (including Red Hen bread, yum :) at an extra, but nominal cost. In my current situation, the pros outweigh the cons, and it's worthwhile to me to pay a little extra for the ease and quality. We currently are giving the Chef's Tasting Program a try, for which you pay $13.50/serving, but let the chef choose your meals (with your fast preferences in mind) and providing your feedback on them afterward, which I think is a fair trade for the discount. I gladly plan to continue to be a customer of Madison and Rayne, and encourage you to give it a try! read more
