I was finally in touch with one of the owners of Earthsake (after the initial yelp response, the delay was mine). He was gracious and accommodating - ended up putting me in touch with the manufacturer of the comforter. I tend to buy the more expensive and very well made option when presented with a choice, which means I expect more of those things. When I spoke with the manufacturer, he was immediately defensive concerning my problem. He told me that a minor repair would be more work (and thus more expensive) than a *NEW* comforter. I laughed at him, which isn't nice, but... seriously? We're talking about a comforter. I'm not camping with this thing. It's on my bed. I sleep under it. Not complicated. If the manufacturer's excuse for bad design is "it would be expensive to fix" -- which it was -- I will happily buy elsewhere from craftspeople that design their products to last. Back to Earthsake: again, the owner was very kind when we spoke and genuinely tried to help me, but you can't help a bad product no matter your intentions. Upgrading, but still not ideal because this is the most expensive item that I've ever had to retire because of a pathetic design flaw. I would certainly not buy another one. read more

i purchased the Earthsake Harmony mattress (an encased coil mattress) over 12 years ago. I have been delighted with it ever since. It is a really wonderful, comfortable, perfectly supportive bed. I sleep really well on it and am so happy to have a mattress without toxic flame retardants or chemicals. Even house sitters who have slept in it have thought it was dreamy. Even after twelve years it remains perfectly comfortable, the coils still springy, and I am sure it will last me many more years. The purchase of a top quality organic mattress was on the expensive side, but so very worth while for a place that I spend 1/3 of my time. read more

Sadly, the mattress foundation I ordered was not satisfactory (and the delivery process was rather unreliable) but I can't say enough about the CUSTOMER SERVICE. They refunded my money, simply because I was dissatisfied. Believe me, I wasn't expecting that! I thought I'd have a fight on my hands... but they really stand behind the products they sell. Thank you Eric. Although I'll have to keep looking for an appropriate foundation for my McRoskey mattress, I'd recommend Earthsake without reservation. I love Earthsake because of the quality of their wares, but they need to find a better tagging system. You need a personal assistant/tutor to follow you around and explain the pricing. I visited Earthsake after looking at the pillows on their web site. The store is very homey and welcoming. Meghan was very helpful and answered all my questions about pillows and what would be best for my sleeping style. She even pointed out that the pillow I liked was more expensive than another pillow. I was also told that pillows could not be returned before I purchased. I also tried out the latex mattresses while I was there. Once again Meghan was very helpful and knowledgeable about the different configurations. The mattress cover was certainly high quality. I was not pressured into buying anything! The prices for the mattresses seem competitive with other organic mattresses. This is a very nice boutique store if you are looking for organic eco-friendly products and helpful, friendly staff. Just got our mattress yesterday. Mattress felt fine and was close to what we saw and felt in the store. However the delivery team was horrible and the bad attitude was beyond believe. We are a no shoe house and we request all service providers to take off their shoes or put on a bootie as I have immunocompromised kids. When I first ask the delivery guy to please take off his shoes, he said that will make his feet cold. ?? I thought that was a weird reason, but I went and got him and his partner slippers to put on. Then he refused and said they don't wear other people's slippers. So I request they put on those plastic booties. He said he don't do that because it is slippery. ? What? All the time with an extremely bad attitude and say if they fall I have to pay. My room is less than 15 feet from the front door with real solid wood and they refuse to put on booties, refuse to take off shoes or put on the slippers I provided. I warn that I will report them to Earthsake, he said go ahead. Well there you have it. Be warned that if you want a delivery and you have hardwood floor, they are coming in with their dirty shoes. I understand they are independent delivery service that Earthsake hired, but this has become part of the Earthsake experience. read more

LOVE this store. It's like a little slice of heaven the second you walk in. The sounds, smells, textures and even folks who work there are a joy. I don't think I've ever walked out without having bought something, which might be considered dangerous. But their real jewels are the furniture and mattresses which are truly eco-friendly. I'm not talking about "eco-friendly" via big sign board on the street. Rather this store really researches and can talk with you about why they select the products they do, and they seem to have long term relationships with their vendors, which means they really know them. I have my eye on an incredible single/trundle/bunk bed contraption for my two sons, made out of really beautiful, environmentally friendly wood. can't recommend this place highly enough. Had a mixup with the pricing of an item and the owner was super professional and helpful in getting it resolved. Not everyday that you find a store who's owner is willing to step in and assist a customer like that. Seems like very high quality products in stock here and glad to have found this resource. Prices are not terribly cheap but you get what you pay for and I feel right about paying for quality when it comes to fabrics and beds and things that are so close to our bodies on a daily basis. Love this place so much!t They have a ton of little stuff from here like pillows, sheets, Zents concreta, lotions, some Yala wear (which is amazing bamboo clothing) also my go-to place for all gifts! They have a great selection of items and a really nice price point ranging from dollar pins to thousand dollar bedding/furniture, but all in all the staff is sweet and honest also very product knowledgeable for those big items like there exquisite mattresses and natural bedding. From the moment I walked in the door, after having been to other bedding shops, I was met by staff who showed the right balance of concern and spaciousness. No one hovered over me, nor was I neglected, and every question I had was answered with clarity. I went off to two other shops, came back, and was met with the same level of attention. The mattress that I purchased was delivered within the time-frame I was given, which was long if you expect something to come that week: 4 to 6 weeks. But the wait was well worth it - the mattress is so comfortable, as are the new sheets and topper. I intend to go back again for more sheets and pillows. read more

We bought new pillows, sheets and a comforter from Earthsake a few weeks ago. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about the products, and we are really happy with what we bought. When we got home we found that the pillow cases that came with our queen sheet set did not fit the queen size pillows that we bought. I called the store to see what could be done to correct this, and the owner said she would give us two queen pillow cases. While I would rather have known about the size discrepancy in the store and not have had to drive back to Berkeley to get the new cases, I think that this is an example of excellent customer service. We will definitely be shopping here again. read more

I had such a pleasant time visiting Earthsake and learning what it had to offer and the benefits its products had for myself and the environment. I called about a week ago after browsing their site and having difficulty making a decision with the many options and the some what confusing and not user friendly site they had. I luckily got the manager who was very informative and patient and pleasantly walked through the different mattress and pillow options and the benefits of all of them. She went as far as asking to write up a quote for me and informing me of the natural linens they also carry and that they had a sale going on and I could get new linens for my mattress. I had kindly declined but after that call I knew I had to make my way to the store. So I went to visit Earthsake this past holiday weekend after listening to a friends band play on the lively jazzed up fourth street. The manager was initially on a break but I was greeted by two other associates both of which helped me look at linens and pillows in the meantime. I was shortly greeted by the manager later who once again walked me through the mattresses and got me a good pillow and tucked me into a bed! Wow what an experience! I must say how admirable I am of this company and its staff all caring and equally knowledgeable as the store got busy and the manager was called away she consistently checked in on me and made my experience positive. While I am not in a financial place to place the order on the mattress I want I know that I can come back to this friendly family place. read more

I received EXTREMELY poor customer service from this company. After taking several days to notify me that my product was out of stock, I sent an email asking them to clarify the timeline. When I didn't hear from them for several days, I decided to call and was told it would be an additional couple of weeks before they "might" have their product, and then more time after that for shipping. Considering the high price of their shipping ($20+ for a pillow), I asked if I would be compensated in any way for the delay, and/or if they would rush the shipment as an alternative. The representative flat out refused to do either, at which point I canceled my order. They might be fine for others, and I'm sure they do offer a quality product, but I for one will give my money to other businesses that actually take care of their customers. read more

I am sad to update my review based on refusal to honor their warranty. I bought an organic, very expensive mattress from them with a 10 year warranty. It was an Earthsake brand mattress. Heather said they would take care of it, but then Eric called back and said that it was the responsibility of their subcontractor, and that I would need to ship it to and from Montana for inspection and a decision. The manufacturer would keep my mattress 2 weeks PLUS shipping time, and they would possibly refuse to do anything. read more

I visited Earthsake the other day while strolling down 4th. The store is locally owned yet has corporate class. They strive to deliver organic, local and high quality bedding and bath products at fair prices. Mattresses that are fair trade, organic, including local contents and assembly are their specialty. If you have shopped around for such a mattress or sheets, no they are not cheap! But, think, you spend 8 hours of your life on one sleeping and playing. Useful life, a good night's sleep, and the experience over years and years is worth it to me. Hey man, it ain't China made Kmart crap on 4thSt! One of the only places you can have a touch and feel experience with these products. Otherwise its the internet and hope for the best. Since moving to the Bay Area, I've learned more and more about being "Green" or Earth Friendly or is that Eco Friendly or whatever, okay Organic ... damn I'm confused. I thought it was only in food but, Earthsake got all that green, eco, organic stuff. Got some "bamboo" sheets which was nice and soft ( is that an oxymoron, describing Bamboo as soft?) Saw that they sell mattresses, Organic. I've been in the market for a mattress ever since I've moved up here but a mattress that's Organic??? It's the first time I've come across one. It feels like a regular mattress but a lot better then what Keetsa offers. So, sad to say, I didn't buy the mattress but got the sheets and will wait to use it on a new mattress. read more

I'm updating my review on earthsake's wool, cotton and kapok pillows. I had stated in my review that they were the most uncomfortable pillows I had ever owned and very pricey. I stated that we have had them for several months, in fact I found the receipt emailed to me by the company and we ordered them last march. The owner of the store responded on Yelp and said if we could find our receipt he would exchange them for us, which I considered very generous. However I contacted the store via email and the response was they would only do an exchange if the pillows were unused. How could I possibly know if these pillows were uncomfortable if I hadn't used them? We are back to using our old down pillows we bought at Costco years ago because the ones we bought at earthsake are so flat and hard they make my neck hurt. I did look for reviews on these pillows on their website, I still can not find them. Maybe I'm not looking in the right spot? read more

I purchased a 3- 3"layer organic latex mattress some years ago. I'm writing now because I had given up at the time of purchase and am just now ready to get rid of it after it being useless all this time and thought it warranted a critique. I wanted a mattress with the the exact same density as the demo at the store- was told it had firm on the bottom, med in the middle and soft on top. Well- at home, it didn't feel anything like the one at the store. I may as well have been sleeping on a board- backaches every day. I asked to exchange the bottom firm layer for a medium as it felt the hardest. I was charged $200. There was no difference. I believe I was sent another firm layer. Everyone (I asked all my friends) who laid on it said the same thing. I wasn't about to spend another $200 for an experimental exchange. Staff was not helpful. I never slept on it again. I had saved for a long time to buy a bed suitable for chemical sensitivity. What a disappointment. read more

I have wandered in and out of this store on Fourth Street for years, without buying much, because the stuff is so expensive. But this time, I really needed a mattress pad, and I found myself resisting all the ones I saw at big retails stores (from Macy's to Target to Costco) because they were expensive and made with chemicals and inorganic fabrics. They all just felt wrong. Finally I walked into Earthsake, hoping they had mattress pads on sale, and found one (not on sale) that was beautiful, organic, and not that much more than the chemical ones I had seen at Macy's. So I took the plunge, with the help of an enormously courteous and friendly staff. I'm comforted by the thought of sleeping on a well-made organic mattress pad (to go with my well-made organic mattress), and if I need customer service for any reason, and the service staff is as friendly as the sales staff is, I'd give this a five-star rating. read more

I purchased organic slippers that upon arrival wouldn't stay on my feet. I contacted Earthsake regarding the return and was told that they didn't refund shipping charges. I asked her to double check because I had never heard of a company charging the buyer for shipping costs both ways on a return. I was then told that they WOULD refund the original shipping charge of $7.99 but I would have to pay shipping to return it so I did just that. I later received a refund of $22 which only covered the amount I paid for the slipper and NOT the shipping. So here I sit with no slippers and I am out $16 for shipping both on the return and delivery and I was lied to by this company. If I had known that I would have to pay shipping both ways I would have sold them myself. This company needs to remember that it isn't just snooty, rich people in need of organic items but many, many poor and sick individuals with illness' that insurance doesn't cover. Shame on Earthsake! Thank you Wendi for the best customer service I have ever received, not to mention the sweetest, softest, most special sweater set for my baby granddaughter, who will arrive in November. Wendi and I exchanged several emails discussing the availability of colors for this item and I mentioned that I was hoping to have the set for my daughter's baby shower on Saturday morning. By Friday evening I had resigned myself to the fact that I might not receive the set in time for the shower. Imagine my surprise to see a darling young woman with a perfect gift box in her hand coming up my walkway. It was Wendi in the flesh, HAND DELIVERING my order!
