I purchased a new futon set (foam base + futon + comforter) for my new home and I was looking to relive my sleeping experience from my time living in Japan. I've been sleeping on it for about a week now and I LOVE THEM. They have this wonderful natural earthy smell and they're so soft and warm. I have zero complaints. The only caveat I have is to recommend better, pre-emptive communication with customers. I was originally given a 2 week lead time on my order, but it actually took around 5 weeks. I had to email multiple times to get updates on my order. I don't mind, 2 weeks seemed super fast in my opinion, but I think just communicating these delays to the customer ahead of time would go a long way in customer satisfaction. But I have to stress this is very high quality bedding, a Japanese futon made the right way. Even with longer wait times, Matsu will be the first place I go to for my Japanese home goods. read more

I recently purchased tatami mats from Matsu. I initially tried to place the order online, but the shipping cost was quite high, so I decided to call them directly. They answered all my questions very politely and helpfully, and I learned that they also offer half-tatami sizes so the mats can fit in a regular car. Very frustrated and disappointed with their service. Went in and ordered a complete custom bedding set for my mom's 75th birthday coming up in mid October. Owner or staff did not think to call me during those 3 weeks to come in n pick out another fabric?!! Long story short, I did not have the bedding set on my mom's big birthday. I was looking for a zaisu (floor chair) so I could sit on the floor with my low table and work without breaking my back; I saw online they sold two types, so I just visited the store during the day to check them out in person. After trying it out and discussing the type (foldable vs wood) I decided to purchase the padded foldable version right there and then, and the lady kindly let me know that because that was the floor model, they could take the (custom fabric) cushion off and put it on a new frame, and it would be ready for me the next day. I came back next day to pick it up and it was nicely wrapped and ready for me, the whole process was really straightforward and I love the fabric choices they have. I did not opt to get another custom fabric wrap made though I'm sure I could have, as I already really liked the design that was on it. Can't wait to try it out, and if I ever need some other furniture items (they have zabuton, which are the floor cushions) or if I decide I ever want anything with their custom fabric I'll pay them another visit. They take Apple Pay which was pretty nice b/c I know a lot of smaller local stores don't always have it set up, so that was a nice touch. Made it a lot easier since I didn't have my wallet with me that day. read more

We ordered a King size organic futon and tatami set recently The customer service was good. Very detailed, and helpful. However, when we opened futon, it was measured 8 inches short on both ends. So we called them right away, and they measured it in store, admit to the mistake and reordered. However with the 2nd one, it's still 4 inches short. They sent someone to come and look at it, and the owner says that's how they make futons...... well, 1 month later, the futon feels great, however, it's still 4 inches short. If I buy a king size bed because I don't want a queen size, obviously it's because I want more bed. So despite it's good service. the store didn't fulfill it's agreement. I will recommend taking the business elsewhere. read more

Shortly after Christmas, we were taking a stroll down Solano Avenue and chanced into Matsu. We've never gone through it before, in part (I suspect) because Mr. Frugal is justly wary of encouraging me to browse in a store so chock full of interesting trinkets. Not, mind you, that Matsui contains cheap shlocky stuff. Probably its unfair to even use the term "trinket" for high quality items such as these... bolts of authentic Japanese fabric, antiques, fans, incense holders, and a thousand different items are crammed into this small non-descript shop. But the Guy was right. He knew I'd find something that I positively needed. And that, having toured the store at leisure I'd be back. And of course, I was. Dashed into the place to buy two fine folding fans just before leaving on an SFO-SEATAC flight. Not...as you might presume, because Alaska Airlines was saving its HVAC for first-class passengers, although you are quite right that the back of the plane can get a bit stuffy what with all of those suitcases crammed into the overheads. Not to mention the shoes deposited underneath the seats. (Come on folks, be courteous....) Nope. The fans were to be used as window coverings. One large one (very nice with handpainted horses on it) and one small one. Purple, with a cute little tassel. Make great window covers, those fans. Can be folded up when you want to see the view of Mt. Hood. And (this I know for sure) can be transported easily in one's carryon luggage. Nice fans, worthy of the rushed journey to pick them up before departure. Nice customer service, good store location on Solano. Perhaps a trifle more expensive than I might have paid elsewhere, but then, I didn't have to shop around as I'd already spotted them on that previous visit. Okay, okay. So Mr. Frugal was right and we shouldn't have browsed through the store. ...but then again, I didn't purchase that serenely bubbling fountain in the store's window. Now *that* would have been an extravagant expenditure. As any Yelper knows, you need all the fans you can get! And Matsu has them. That and much more. read more

I wanted to warn people about shopping at the Matsu-Store Online outlet. I recently purchased a Zaisu floor chair from them online. They have many different fabrics to choose from, which is great. Unfortunately, the entire pattern of the fabric is not displayed on the site and the actual pattern looks different from what you ordered. This would not be an issue as long the online store manager would be willing to refund the money you spent on the chair. The owner is absolutely not willing to work with you in this regard. The only thing you can do is order a different fabric and send the thing back and forth until you get what you wanted. Make 100 % certain that you are completely sure of what you want. If you are, great, if not you will not be happy because the owner of the store will hide behind her "policy" and not move an inch. The lady told me that the reason for that is, that they chair is handmade in the bay area. If that is the case, I wonder why it says Taiwan Shipping on the box that I received my awful chair in. Wonderful place. The staff was lovely and very friendly and very knowledgeable. We were looking for a meditation bench. We tried the one they had and it was a bit too short. They said they could have one made for us one inch taller or more if we needed the extra height for comfort. We debated how tall it should be and sales lady said that our backs were almost straight. If it was too tall we would feel like we were going to fall over. We had the make us one for the same price and it only took a week. We bought a few other things. Wonderful shop. I loved my experience with Matsu. I walked in there looking for a zafu and a zabuton. I got more than I wanted from the saleswoman. She's so nice and layed back didn't trying to sell me anything. I loved the freedom to walk around her store. It smells beautiful and is filled with a wide selection of fabrics bedding meditation items plus lot's more. She didn't have a buckwheat zafu due the high sales volume of them. She found a cover I liked and filled it for me to out try before I make up my mind on kapok or buckwheat filling. I was very happy with quality of the items purchased, service and a chance to put money into a local business. I say go there but be careful you'll fall in love with her service and all the items in the store. read more

The part that I liked the most were all of the little figurines. I am a Year of the Siracha (Rooster) and they had cute ones that represented me, and I almost got one. Why am I cursed with this self control when it comes to impulse shopping but not any other sort of activity? You should go there, they are nice people with nice things. I really hesitated to write this, but I just can't let it pass. I selected Matsu to recover 5 chair seats for a dining set that I had personally redesigned and rebuilt, because I bought a very nice meditation pillow from them for my daughter and had them make a cover for the futon, also very nicely done. I was looking for the best quality. She said she could do the seats and I thought great! Was I wrong! When I brought in one seat to confirm it, she hesitated, but called her shop man, and then said he would do them for $10 more than originally quoted. Ok , that was fine. He would just remove the last layer of blue fabric, and put the new 2" foam over the existing cotton and other old layers, not redo the whole thing with new underlayers, as is typically done. Ok. I paid to in advance to order the foam. A few weeks later, I brought in the fabric I wanted and paid in advance for the work. 'He' took his time doing the work, with no consideration for the original promised completion date. When I got the seats back, oddly, they no longer sat flush on the chair frames. I would have just recut the grossly overfolded corners myself to make them fit, but 2 of the 5 seats had the fabric inside out or misaligned. So I took back 3 seats with printed instructions on how to fold seat corners. She was hostile and argumentative, but agreed that it was wrong. 2 weeks later she said that 'he' had done one seat and that I should look at it. 'He' had removed all of the old layers and put the fabric over just a piece of foam on the plywood, which I later uncovered to find that it wasn't 2" foam that I had ordered. I told had her to just cut away the excess at the corners and recover with the fabric, not to do what he did. We agreed that I should take the seat home and see if it was right because she wanted to be sure that I was satisfied. I could have them all done that way for $ 20@ additional. I decided that it didn't work with my new lumbar design, and called her the next day to tell her not to remove the underlayers on the other 2 seats. If he couldn't figure out how to do them, just give them back to me. 2 weeks later she called to say that they were ready. Turns out 'he' had removed all the old layers and just put back the foam and fabric. She was sorry. Here were the seats and a plastic bag with the underlayers from the 2 seats. She said I would have 2 seats that fit my design that I could sit in , and 3 that were 1" less in thickness that others could sit in! This was a lot of trouble for them, but the work they produced was grossly incompetent and an enormous time consuming disappointment to me. I advise anyone not to trust them. She is a liar, and behind her placid exterior there is a ready petty hostility. read more

Fantastic customer service. I live in Washington, DC and never walked into the store. I talked about my interest in sleeping in a Japanese-style bed and Wanda from the store walked me through the different mattress types. She followed up promptly when what I wanted to order was out of stock for the next 3 weeks (couldn't wait that long as the only thing between me and the cement floor is a 3 inch latex topper). She found a 12" Japanese futon in stock, and sold it to me. The packing was well done and fast, considering the weight and distance (it only too 4 days via ground, which is faster than my smaller packages from CA or the west coast in general). I love the mattress! Never tried it before I bought it, and I am pleased with my purchase. I hope to visit this store when I am in town. I bought a bed (hand made maple), 2 tatami mats (that go in the bed as the base) and 2 futons from Matsu and have been using them for about 5 years now. It is such high quality craftsmanship, the tatamis are beautiful and thick such high qualifty and the futon is made of real wool and cotton. Very "authentic Japanese". They suggest buying 2 thinner futons so you can easily air and turn and flip and this has worked very well for me. When guests with back pain stay on this bed they way it is the most comfortable futon they have slept on and it really is. The nice thing is that when Matsu came to my house to deliver the bed, the Japanese man who arrived was so sweet and professional and I watched him assemble the bed so I could learn in case I had to take it apart (which I've had to do twice now). I really could not believe the amazing design of this bed and how each piece was hand made and fit perfectly, very brilliant design. If you ever go the store ask them to lift up the futon and show you the bed itelf - just amazin. The other thing I love about Matsu is that they have a really amazing collection of hand made Asian tie-dye fabrics (that are indigo blue and white) and just out of this world gorgeous. I bought one several years ago and wash it and it has kept it's color. Everytime I have had an issue such as a stain on the futon, or something that has come up the lady at Matsu has been so helpful and coached me through it - because I see this bed as an investment. Not a piece of junk made in China that is going to crap out in few years. This is authentic hand made Japanese artistry. I wish Matsu would carry a larger assortment of futon covers and fabrics, but they are a very small shop and they do their best. read more

This is a beautiful clean shop with soft lighting, soft music and a nice owner name Betty. This is a great place to buy little gifts at all price rages. From fancy chop sticks, Japaneses coin purses, hand made mini zen gardens and beautiful hand made water fountains made from glass rock, slate and sand slate (made in the backyard of the store!) They are very impressive works of art and its worth a trip just to take a look at them. The front of the store often displays a HUGE hand crafted sand slate fountain with mist floating around it to suck in window shoppers (and always lures me in), and is usually switched off few months. All their bedding covers are custom made in the back of the shop, you can hear the sewing machines going off in the back. Theres a huge selection of fine Asian fabrics to choose from, I got my bed covers from there and they're VERY comfortable. I highly recommend this store for a visit. read more
