Viking Trader is such a great find if you're into warm, lived-in pieces with character. I stopped in just to browse and ended up walking out with a solid wood dresser that fits my space perfectly. The price was more than reasonable for the quality. I also appreciated that the staff didn't hover but were available when I had questions about materials and care. They have a mix of vintage and new, and the store itself has a relaxed, curated feel -- not overwhelming like some big-box places. BUYER BEWARE--Viking Trader DOES NOT STAND BEHIND its electric products. We bought a desk and desk lamp at Viking Traders. After 3 years, the lamp had a long series of failures. My husband, a federally-licensed electronics technician, replaced the bulb, the transformer, the socket, and all of the wiring. He replaced some of these items multiple times. The lamp still did not work. We went back to the store. The manager treated us with utter disdain. That will be our last visit to Viking Trader. read more

I *love* the design of this furniture! It is probably the most comfortable sitting I've ever done. I work with muscle sensors for a living, and a significant part of this has been working with ergonomic evaluations. I have to say that the design of the recliners and couches in this place is basically perfect. I love the individual sectional couch-recliners. The curvature perfectly supports the entire spine from the lower back to the neck. One of my friends isn't fond of the style of this furniture. I can't really comment on that. I like the style. Either you like it or you don't. But comfort-wise... this is the best I've experienced. It's also all custom-made for your personal dimensions. So you can make the seat height, depth etc all based on what works best for you. This is really critical to a good ergonomic setup. The downsides: -) It's expensive -) It takes awhile to get the furniture (it's custom, and may come from overseas). Typically it's anywhere from 2.5 - 4 months depending on whether you get it from the local American factory or the one in Europe. We just received our recliners from Viking Trader yesterday, and we are happy with every aspect of the transaction. We had been shopping around for recliners (finally ready to upgrade from our Ikea Poang chairs), and visited several furniture stores. We visited a range of chain stores (high end Ethan Allen to the abominable Ashley Furniture) as well as independents like Viking Trader. The service at Viking Trader was by far the best: helpful, responsive, and not pressuring. They also had the recliners that suited us best: simple design, sleek and compact, and with several sizes available to fit the intended sitter. We chose the Caprice recliners, one in size medium and one in size small. We were able to choose the material from out of several books of swatches, since the recliners would be built to order. The manufacture took quite a while (the building and shipping of the recliners from a Scandanavian country) -- probably 12 weeks altogether. Although we were eager to receive them, we tried to enjoy the anticipation, too. Scheduling the delivery was just a matter of talking with the owner and figuring out when they would be near enough to the North Bay at a time when we could be home (as it turns out, two days from when they arrived in Berkeley). The main delivery person was the owner's son, and he and his coworker were professional, punctual, and a pleasure to deal with. They even offered to vacuum up a few crumbs of packing material after getting the chairs in place. In the future, Viking Trader is likely to be the first and only furniture store we shop at. We do recommend that they upgrade their website, which gave us a poor first impression. read more

We were referred to Viking Trader by a family member. Ann assisted us, she was patient and extremely helpful to the extent we came back several times before deciding on two chairs and a couch. As the furniture is made and assembled in Norway, we were told to plan on 3 months which made sense to us based on our leather selection and three furniture items. We also ordered over a holiday period so realized there could potentially be a delay. From Ann to the owners, We cannot say enough about the integrity and honesty we received. I found one that was a good possibility but taking the photo of my RYA made me aware of how wonderful it is. Kristen called Saturday from Viking trader while I was out and left me a message that the 8' x11' rug I had asked about was available in the warehouse but I took a nap and forgot to call her back until today. When I called, I spoke to Anne (or Ann). I told her the story and my decision to keep my rug. I told her about my so far unsuccessful quest to find someone who could restore it. She told me she had sent a similar rug to Appleby in San Leandro and had been very happy w/ the results. I was thrilled and called Appleby. I will call them after the first of the year and they will pick it up. They will have their rug restorer look at it and give me an estimate. If nothing else, I will have them clean it. First, these folks have been in business forever, so they really know the brands, quality, and impressively the people who work for all the manufacturers. Quality has always been consistently high and the brands they carry are some of the best and not the poor quality pieces that are often online or in stores these days. We purchased a new bedroom set that was hand made with a special color stain. Incredible quality and excellent value. Prices are very competitive and for the quality and service it's worth it. We don't suggest people waste time shopping around just to get a deal. Just come here because they are competitively priced and you get the bonus in personalized service and honest people. We waited two months because the set we got was custom made by hand and had to ship from the east coast. But it was worth the wait. Delivery was seamless. The team assembled everything on site and it was super smooth. No surprise, since we found out the delivery folks have worked with the company for 25 plus years. This is a lovely store and they are very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, I don't like anything that they sell. It's all pine, glass, and retro...but I don't think it's fair for me to mark them down just because they don't sell the kind of furniture I like. If this is your style, you should go. I love Viking Trader! I have been going there for years with my Mom (who took about 10 years before she finally picked a couch). So, when it came time to buy a couple of Stressless chairs - in response to a back spasm - it was a no brainer that the Hub and I would visit Viking Trader. We made several visits to the store and spent quite a bit of time sitting in the different models. When a sale came up on a particular model, even though it wasn't my favorite style, we visited the store, spent some more time in the seats and ordered a couple of chairs. So here we are about a year later and lucky me, another back spasm. So I have been spending a bunch of time in my Stressless chair because it's the only way I can get remotely comfortable. I notice a small dip in the small of my back and I can feel a small divet in the seat. I called up Viking Trader and they immediately schedule a service call. On Wednesday, Mike shows up on time, takes a look at my chair and feels the spot that I am talking about. He disassembles the chair and takes a closer look at the problem. Turns out the divet is part of the chair so nothing is actually wrong with it. I am just the princess and the pea and my super sensitive back doesn't like that divet. Well, instead of saying "Too bad, live with it", Mike says that the comfort of the chairs is guaranteed and they will fix it. So, he takes my chair back to the shop and returns the next day with it. They have filled in the divet with some foam and added another layer over the whole back surface. There is no charge for the repair or the travel or anything. Now, that is service! To the people who griped about the high price, I say, You get what you pay for! I have bought cheaper furniture before from another vendor and then had to live with a lumpy couch and lousy customer service. With Viking Trader, they carry the best of the high end furniture and they stand behind it. Who could ask for anything more. read more

We were on the hunt for a new sofa and after a search on Yelp, we realized this place is very close to our house. When we got there, we had an "OH! THAT place!" moment. We pass by this place nearly every day and have always wondered about it. Well, this place was great! In our search for a new sofa, we also looked at places like West Elm, Pottery Barn, Z Gallerie, etc. and I found the quality of Viking Trader's furniture to be far better and the prices to be about the same, if not a bit lower for certain things (especially if you catch something on sale). This is the place to go when you are ready for "grown-up" furniture. The service was great. They greeted us when we came in and asked if we needed help. When we told them we just wanted to look around, they actually left us alone to look around and didn't follow us through the store. When we were ready to "talk", they were available to answer questions that we had. Note that if you are expecting to be able to take your furniture home with you that day, this probably isn't the place for you (you'll want to go to Ikea for that). But we knew we wanted a quality piece of furniture and were willing to wait for it. And because you can customize your furniture the way you want it (including the type of arm for your sofa, fabric, and even feet), you will probably have to wait a bit before it gets delivered. In fact, the couch they told us that to get the sofa in the fabric and style that we wanted, it would take 3-4 months because the sofa would be built to order at a factory in Lithuania (they were up front about this and warned us when we first told them we were looking for sofas). We are looking forward to taking delivery of our new custom sofa! I'll post an update when the sofa arrives to review the delivery process. read more

Great selection of Scandinavian furniture, but the main draw is obviously the Ekornes Stressless chairs. Yeah, I caved in and bought one (got the laptop swing-out tray for free per their promotion), and let me tell you these chairs really are the bomb! Perfect neck/back support. Can't even count how many times I fell asleep in it. For a salesperson, I got Anne (tall lady w/ short blond hair) and she helped me pick out the perfect chair for my stature and tastes. She was super helpful and super friendly and even helped me pick out a matching rug w/ cool Rorshach-like features. The only thing I feel guilty about was getting the 90-day financing - it's through AIG! Those bastards! Maybe I can send in my final payment Unibomber style. It is as great as it gets. Shopped around for a couch for years in my spare time and it wasn't until recently I found too many great ones to choose from at Viking. Boyfriend helped narrow it down to one. I also bought a Stressless Ekornes chair. Those chairs can change your life. I have more energy, sleep less and get more work done sitting on it. Best price I've seen. (Forget Scandinavian design). I'm a moderately low-income worker but saved up to get something beautiful made by AMerican hands and supporting local small family businesses. Go in a few times when you have time and sit on a lot of chairs and sofas or lie on some beds for as long as you want. They don't mind. Certainly a more elegant and warm shopping experience than Ikea and many other furniture stores I've wandered through in the Bay Area over the years. I was in during October and ordered a chair. I was told that I would receive it in December by their salesperson Ann. I called in December and Ann told me that she didn't tell me it would come in December, and she didn't know when it would arrive, but that it would be at least January. I asked to speak to the owner and was transferred to Hawkin who told me I was never told that it would come in in December! I was shocked because I definitely didn't make it up and the reason I called when I did in December was to find out the delivery date. I asked him for my money back and he told me they would either charge me a 20% restocking fee or charge me more to get one in a color I didn't want. Oddly enough I mentioned this to a friend and she told me her friend had the same experience!! She was also given a delivery date and then she was also told it would be another month. This place has the worst customer service I have experienced anywhere! They not only lie to you, but they're very rude! I was planning on recommending them to my homeowner's condo committee for several pieces of furniture we saw there, but definitely will be taking them off the list now. read more

Just recently purchased a Memory Foam mattress here and was very pleased with the whole process - from testing the mattress in store to placing the order and then final delivery. No high pressure tactics here - the sales people seem to be just dedicated to helping and assisting your selection process, as you require. I also ordered a replacement part for an older stressless chair that I have, which was delivered at the same time as the mattress and the delivery guys voluntarily installed the part for me at no additional charge. We appreciate the design that goes in to much of Viking Trader's furniture. Perhaps much of it is more suitable for an office environment, but it's difficult to find a more-or-less affordable sofa with a simple, compact profile. That said, one star for shoddy materials and customer support. We purchased a very nice queen sleeper sofa, and paid a premium for a "durable" fabric upholstery. One year in, and a rent began to appear. Now it's 3 years in, the rent is almost 3 feet across the top of the sofa, and new holes are appearing in the seat area. It looks as if someone opened a box with the material, and scored the fabric with the cutter. Their reaction? first visit: a shrug of the shoulders, and recommendation that we find a seamstress somewhere. When the problem became worse, there was "head scratching". The fabric had been discontinued, so a patch was out of the question. Basically, we have a $2500 monument to disposable furniture on prominent display in our living room. A reputable business would have sent two guys and a truck, hauled the thing away, and re-covered it. With APOLOGIES. Our family has brought repeat business to VT over the years. Today, we took in a large upholstered arm chair that is part of our family room set. They repaired the dowels and loose bolt in 15 minutes and would accept no payment. I am very pleased with Viking Trader. I had been looking for a queen sized head board and support for a about a year. I searched for several months on Ebay and through other sources including retro furniture dealers everywhere. Out of desperation, I even tried Design Within Reach. You want expensive? they should be renamed "Design Beyond Reach!" They are out of sight in the stratosphere and way, way overpriced! But, not to be out done on my search, I finally found Viking Trader on Shattuck Ave. in Berkeley. With the help from the owner, I found exactly the style of bed that I was looking for in their up stairs showroom. It is called Prestigia by Mobican. The bed is queen size and has a wonderful mid-century look to the design. It seems that the queen size beds haven't been around all that long. Viking trader had several quality beds to choose from and the one that I found that looked vintage, was well built and had a flip top on the head board for storage. Made from teak, this bed was perfect for the retro look that I wanted. My search was over and so I ordered the bed which was built in Canada and delivered to their store in Berkeley - on time - and then delivered to my home soon afterwards. Being a family owned business, their son and another fellow hauled this disassembled bed down forty stairs - without a squawk or extra charge - and carefully put it together in about forty minutes. If you need something well made and design conscious, Viking Trader will most likely have what you are looking for. From start to finish my experience with Viking Trader was excellent and I would definitely recommend them to my friends or anyone here reading this review. Give them a try sometime. read more

I am so glad I found this store, it offers not only high quality furniture but premium customer service. I believe the person I dealt with by the name of Hukin (not sure if I spelled the name right) is one of the family members who owns the store. Hukin went out of his way to drop off a wood sample for a bed that I wanted at my work in Walnut Creek. I went there twice and never felt the pressure to buy. They were always available to help if we needed their attention but never pushy, they seem very honest and care about their customers . I am so glad I ordered the bed that I looked for everywhere before finding Viking Trader and Hukin offered me free delivery. When they finally did send my chair, Viking Trader tripped over themselves trying to get it to me.... free delivery for my trouble. Not a...Nightmare.... They had a sale on Ekornes chairs and I ordered one on August 21st. Told me three week delivery. They then said Oct 22nd. STILL NOTHING and they are holding my $500 deposit all this time. Viking Trader is like an oasis in a barren furniture market near Berkeley. Most of the places are low end stuff catering to students. There is a place for that, but there are some pieces that you really want to last a lifetime and this is the place you go for that. First, we got one of the Stressless chairs for my wife. Great chair, we know it will last 20-years no problem. But aside from the furniture, the customer service is awesome, exactly what you would expect from a local family owned store that puts customers first. They want you to be happy and they work with you to ensure you are happy. They even came over and swapped out the bottom of the chair and stool to give us a different color. Took 10 min and it couldn't have been easier. We will go back there and buy one of those Ingrid couches. This place is not cheap, but you get great quality and great service.
