Also, while discussing the fence repair I brought up my busted side gate and he gave me a good price on a steel framed gate, which sounded much better than the wood framed one I had. Melvin, Eduardo, Mauricio, (and a 4th guys whose name I didn't get) did a great job. Clearly these guys are technicians and not just laborers. They measured twice (maybe 3 times) and cut once. During removal of a fence post, their crew broke multiple patio pavers, displaced perimeter bricks, and exposed concrete footing. This patio was professionally installed and represented a significant investment. Photographic and video evidence of the damage has been preserved. The on-site supervisor stated there was "no way" to remove the post without causing damage. That statement is inaccurate. This is the second time fencing has been replaced at this property, and prior licensed contractors performed the same work without damaging the finished patio surface. Since the incident, I have: * Contacted the project supervisor multiple times * Left voicemail messages * Contacted the office directly * Attempted to reach ownership No response has been provided. As a licensed California contractor performing work within an HOA community, California Fences is responsible for property damage caused during the course of work. I have formally requested their General Liability insurance information and written confirmation of repair. I prefer resolution over escalation. However, continued non-response will leave me no option but to proceed through formal channels including CSLB complaint and civil recovery. Ignacio, who came for the site visit and identified himself as the owner, was very easy to communicate with both in person and over the phone. However, Jackie, (not clear to me if she's the co-owner or Ignacio's wife) finalizes pricing and pretty much runs the show. For our project, we had picked IVS to do the work, but the price kept increasing by thousands of dollars. I asked to speak with Ignacio since these changes were inconsistent with what I discussed with him and put them week above our other quotes, but Jackie said that's not necessary since she decides the pricing. They also charge tax on materials, which no other fencers do (since they're already paying tax to Home Depot, etc.). These business practices felt disingenuous to me and like bait and switch. I've had issues in the past with businesses like this that once the work begins they'll change order you again and ask for more money. So we did not use them. For this fence, we received multiple quotes. Two companies were in the $9-10K range and IVS was around $12K. All were licensed and bonded. We went with the lowest quote and are extremely happy with our fence.

This is the latter. 2) I'm fortunate. Thankfully, I didn't hire RYE. Despite my best efforts, the owner didn't feel I was worthy enough to force thousands of dollars into his pockets. Now after reading some of the other 1-star reviews (and they're adding up), I feel even more fortunate; reported shoddy work, disdain for customers and an angry/funky attitude? Where do I sign up? If you're like me in selecting a provider, you look for patterns in the reviews, especially the bad ones, and the owner's response, if any, to customer complaints. I'm confident he's going to respond to this one. Be careful to look at his other responses for his word choice, tone and use of all caps to angrily shout his point to you via email (I got one of these in an email reply). Take note that he's never at fault. He's an expert and you're ignorant. The customer is always wrong in his world. In my interactions with the owner, I learned some of his many rules: - It's all about him. Not about you. You take the scribbled, vague proposal (no drawing, no measurements, etc.) he gives you and sign it whether it's accurate or not. No questions! Anything else will be handled by a change order. - Don't make him go out of his way. 1) I live on the East coast and was visiting the Bay Area for a couple of days to check on our rental property in Oakland. I kindly requested a meeting to shake the hand of the person I was strongly considering hiring. You'd thought I asked him to donate a kidney. He did it, after a long discussion, but resented it. Still does. 2) The neighbors around our house agreed to share the costs of a new fence and simply wanted to know their costs. I asked the owner for a breakdown of the costs (i.e. cost/section). That request was met with exasperation. Never got it because it would've meant he would've had to return to the property and measure the fence properly like every other professional fence company does. - He is a victim of his experience. He will project on you any negative experience he's had with past customers. I got tagged with the David G review of 4/16/2017. - Do Not Dare make any problem-solving suggestions. Remember, he's an expert who has seen and done it all and you're just an ignorant customer vying for his services. To be fair, his pricing is much lower than competing proposals but his funky attitude and unprofessional behavior saps his pricing of credibility, and makes you wonder what you're really getting. I will pay more for the right to get answers to reasonable questions, reasonable requests and great customer service. Finally, as part of your normal due diligence, I encourage you do some research and Google his name for public records which will help you make an informed decision about having him on your property and around your family.

Big problem that I knew would take a professional to look into fixing. Called a few companies and only Monrye was available to come by to take a look within the hour. He diagnosed it, figured out the solution, and came back the following morning with the right supplies to fix the fence swiftly and in the process probably realigned it better than the original installers did. Thankfully, Yelp has been super helpful with our search for a contractor and we landed on using Garcia Fencing. We reached out for a quote and the contractor Kenny was quick in setting up a time to come over for an initial assessment (discussed what needed to be fixed and what style of wood (board on board)/stain to fix with) and quote of the overall cost. Let's just say the overall project to replace all the backyard fence can be pretty expensive but we received a reasonable estimate. It only took them about a little bit more than half a day to get the entire fence replaced which was super impressive. We did end up having to call them back another day to do some additional fixes for some gaps on the fences that we noticed but they were able to come to fix those up. The new fence did end up looking very nice and sturdy! The stain really does make it look very polished and clean. Overall, we had a good experience working with Garcia fencing and would recommend for any future fencing needs. Also warranty is seven years so def a big help for any future fencing concerns.
