I've have subscribed to printed news media for many decades. I canceled today. No refunds... beware Local news has been reduced over the last few years, steep price increases and way too many ads. EB Times should be called "The Advertiser." Customer service? I've had better, much better, elsewhere. Crappy, shallow newspaper, always about 48 hours behind all other local publications. The funniest part is that on their editorial page, they purport to invite letters to the editor, but the email address for them is invalid. So you can craft a wonderful little missive, and try to send it, but it won't go through. (Of course, they're not really interested in your opinion anyway.) read more

The worst service. I have been a subscriber for more than 20 years, yet over past 6 months, the newspaper delivery has been terrible. I only get , at best, delivery maybe 60% of the time and on Sunday, I am lucky if I get the delivery 50% of the time. As an example. I am writing this on Memorial Day weekend; and yet I haven't gotten the Sunday paper. I was hoping to see the local advertising for sales this weekend. The poor newspaper paper delivery is actually a type of fraud. Not only am I billed for a product I don't receive, but the local advertisers who pay for me to see their ads are actually not given the product (me) that they pay for!! This is just a ripoff. I don't like writing bad reviews, honestly probably my 1st but this is a terrible business. My aunt (89) and disabled has been getting her paper from them for over 50 years and she has always paid extra to get it delivered on the porch. They consistently for the past 6 weeks have been either not delivering it, delivering it on the sidewalk, today in the range of sprinklers so the 1 missing yesterday banded today together were soaked and not readable. I would currently give the East Bay Times zero stars. I have not received my paper for just over 21 days. I have called everyday and got the same run around. For 2 weeks I have requested a call back to explain why can not get a paper (which I have pre-paid for) delivered. My call is always "escalated" but no call. It seems the people working in the phone room don't even have a number they can give out so one could be pro-active and call for himself. This service is disgusting and certain shows how the East Bay Times respects a customer of over 20 years. I am sorry to say I have absolutely no faith in anything I am told by the people representing the paper. For example for the first week I requested a replacement paper and was GUARANTEED one was scheduled and would come out. Guess what no paper. After a week I stopped asking for a paper as I realized this was just a waste of time! I find it ironic that the times actively advertises for new subscribers often offering heavily discounted introductory rates but can not be bothered to service its existing clients! read more

I was a subscriber for many years and now it seems like they do not care about the service since after many missed deliveries ! Even after I report this issue no one ever calls me back to correct this issue and to apologize! I have given them about 6 complaints that my paper gets wet every time it rains even though they put it in a plastic bag but not sealed so it gets wet ! I gave them one more chance and they said that the paper will be delivered for sure the same day and it wasn't and also still was not the next day ! I call when there is a missing paper and they always promise another paper will be delivered later that day, but NEVER does. I mention that the next time I call and they said they will talk to the driver and it still doesn't come. It's been 8 years. The original review is still true except now it Gov Newsom & not Brown. To receive the paper, I must do it online. Their online version has a constant ad pop up laying over the bottom of their news. I can make it disappear but it reappears as I change sections. In the month of November this great co. Missed 8 times. 3 Sundays 2 Saturdays 3 other days. Every time l complain they said they will let the carrier know. Until about one month ago I would have rated my delivery 4 star. An occasional miss but normally on the driveway by 6:30. There has been a dramatic decline in service beginning in February!! Before renewing my subscription after my first subscription expired and before my authorization of a new subscription, and my making it abundantly clear I did NOT want auto renewal on my account, EBT continued to deliver papers to me charging me their highest rate, in something called a "grace" period. I called EBT this afternoon about all the ongoing issues with my subscription, and after explaining my concerns was told: I paid $77.40 (incorrect), on 9-29-25 (incorrect), that my subscription was from 9-2-25 thru 2-27-26 (incorrect) and that my subscription was for 28 weeks (also incorrect). I asked to speak to a supervisor, I was transferred and spoke to Russ. Russ explained to me that my subscription amount paid of $83.35 included $.39 an issue ($70.20) taxes of $7.20, and a handling fee of $5.85. Through my numerous emails sent to EBT, as well as the rep who took my order, this is the first time a handling fee has been mentioned to me. Still, as I explained to Russ, the email responses I received did not address my issues, were incorrect, and supplied even more confusing terms, starting and expiration dates, payments, etc. No accounting being available to customers is unacceptable. The subscription details on my account keep showing a balance due on the expiration date of my subscription, even after paying for my subscription renewal in full. I have been being charged $.43 an issue, when promised $.39 per issue, making me pay for taxes (and handling fee) twice! Russ said he had no access to the emails sent by me, or emails responding to me by EBT, and no access to the subscription (limited and incorrect) details showing online, but would contact those departments. I am including a screenshot of today's subscription details showing a balance due on the expiration date (which also keeps changing) of my subscription. I also inquired as to why my subscription refers to "Basic Digital Access" and "Standard Digital Access ", instead of "Newspaper Delivery and Digital Access", as agreed to when renewing my subscription. No written accounting available to customers and numerous incorrect terms provided by reps and online is unacceptable. If I hadn't noticed these discrepancies of EBT charging and pocketing money from customers that is not due to EBT and exceeds agreed to terms is outrageous, and with no written confirmation of a what was agreed to, no explanations provided, etc. is nonsense. The extra money EBT is charging customers appears to be OK w. EBT. The extra, incorrect, never agreed to amounts being charged on my account multiplied by thousands (millions?) of EBT customers, for years and years, adds up to an enormous amount of money EBT is receiving that they are NOT entitled to. On my account, Russ said that I should not be charged $43. per issue currently being charged to me, that my end date is 4-12-26, and that he will fix my account to the $.39 per issue as originally promised. He said he would also review my emails and all of the inconsistencies of my subscription terms, send me current, correct terms in writing, and speak with his advisors regarding this accounting nightmare. As this has been going on for years, I can only imagine the amount of refunds that will be due to EBT customers who trusted EBT 's accounting, and it makes sense that there is no billing accounting provided to customers because it would show they are being charged more than they agreed to. Please fix all of this for me, for past customers, current customers and future customers. This is an enormous accounting issue. I look forward to a response from EBT. Thank you. read more

Guess what? We are STILL getting a paper copy we do not subscribe to. Finally gave up contacting them. We get the same "we will take care of it" responses but nothing has changed. From prior reviews, I see this has been going on for over 4 years! We are now giving it to our elderly neighbor who likes a paper newspaper. Delivery problems just get worse and worse. Five papers now not delivered (and paid for) called five times with promises of papers and that they'll talk to the driver. But nothing. Again and again. After 30 years with a subscription today we cancelled it. Why: Because for the past 10 days we have not recieved a paper, we have called everyday and reported it. One out of the ten days someone brought us a paper. Each day we asked and were told the carrier would be notified. Each day we were promised a call from someone let us know what the problem is on our route. Why publish a newspaper if would-be readers can't get a copy? In one week (Sunday to Sunday) I experienced non-delivery of both Sunday papers and Saturday's paper. I was promised that a copy would be sent out, but it never was. On numerous occasions I call, am promised a re-delivery, and nothing happens. If I want to speak to a human being (in the Philippines, I think) I might be promised a delivery "by noon." None comes. Or, I'm kept on hold until I give up. I've read the paper daily for 65 years now, and I want to support print journalism. But I can no longer support a newspaper that won't bother to send me a paper. read more

Unreliable delivery service, I've had to call many times over missed deliveries. Currently I have been without a newspaper for 5 consecutive days, since the previous carrier quit on December 28. My daily complaint calls have not yet corrected the issue, which seems to be their inability to find a replacement carrier on my route. The quality of the East Bay Times is substandard, consisting mostly of wire service reprints from AP and New York Times. Little original locally based journalism. Crime stories often fail to report the names of arrested suspects, and the newspaper has ignored my emails asking why. For a much better written and higher quality newspaper, go with the SF Chronicle, which I also subscribe to. read more

I have subscribed to the Times for ever and the home delivery service is the worst. I pay for one year in advance to get the paper Thursday-Sunday. I am lucky to get one paper a week and I am tired of the same old message 'do you want us to deliver another paper?' Sure but do you really think one ever comes. What a horrible experience. I received a call from a call center selling subscriptions to the East Bay Times. I signed up for 7 day delivery. Received 2 days of newspapers which was early December. Since then, only 1 other paper has been received. I've called 4 times trying to get my paper and out of frustration today, cancelled it completely, only to learn, they had it as cancelled in their system. Get your act together. No wonder why a physical paper is going away, as they can't seem to know how to provide customer service. read more

We have subscribed for about 50 years for their home delivery. It was free for the first few years, and reliably delivered to our front porch by teenagers on bicycles. I realize that all printed newspapers are struggling, but apparently the only effort with the Times is in collecting $. There is very little content, the press deadline is now so early that nothing is timely, including the previous days sports. And more and more frequently they cannot manage to even deliver the paper we have paid for. Apparently there is no longer a supervisor or roving delivery person when yours is unavailable...and the number to call about it goes to the Philippines. And from there, despite the promises of delivery, the complaint is seemingly dropped in the ocean. I can only guess that they are in the process of declaring bankruptcy and abandoning ship. CONSUMER BEWARE - This is NOT what the East Bay Times used to be. It is owned/operated by Bay Area News Group, and whoever owns that company is dead set on taking your money with auto-renew subscriptions even when they literally deliver nothing. And it you try to cancel, good luck. I ordered a 3 month subscription of the Sunday-only home delivery paper. After several calls over the course of one month, I gave up on ever receiving anything. That's where the bigger problem rears its ugly head. They give you the run-around, and the "supervisor" of the Cancellation Department" that I was eventually transferred to stated that the subscription is non-refundable. (Obviously that should not be the case, but it DEFINITELY does not apply when you are not receiving what you've paid for.) I said this was unacceptable, so they said a "District Manager" would call me but they couldn't say who or when. Needless-to-say, I have not heard back from anyone. My credit card company is solving this issue, but they recommended calling one more time to get the reference or confirmation number of the cancellation so that the company doesn't try to charge again after 3 months. So I called a 4th time, got the run around, and then they said they cannot (aka "will not") provide a confirmation number for the cancellation. Unbelievable. I have also lodged a complaint with the BBB, and my credit card company said they can place a Merchant Block on my account so that they cannot try to charge me again. I am posting to help others avoid this rip-off scam company. If you want to try it anyway, I suggest reading reviews on Yelp and the BBB. org website. Also, do not pay with a check because people who did that had no recourse (based on complaints I read). The only other companies that I've run into this kind of rip-off was with two of the gyms throughout the state of California. They make it virtually impossible to cancel and will not provide you with confirmation of a cancellation. They don't deliver (literally) and then tell you everything is non-refundable. I signed up for this to read an article and somehow ended up with a recurring subscription that I never used. I noticed when I changed my credit card. They called about it and I said, no let's just let it lapse. The person wouldn't take cancellation as an answer, and told me I had to pay a past-due balance before I could cancel. This seems illegal. I was able to cancel online through their website. Now they are calling me multiple times per day. Most recently, I called back and they said "well you can get the rest of the year for twelve dollars". I responded no thank you, and they just hung up on me. read more

My mother ordered the East Bay times. In ten days she received one(1) paper. She called every single day. Promises after promises. No paper. Called for a refund. Was told by the call center in the Phillipines (where they don't actually speak English). It would be two weeks. Four weeks later still no refund. The Philippines can't transfer anyone to a supervisor. Charging for something and not delivering is theft. Now the Phillipines call center say she must wait while it's reviewed. Situation was resolved today, but not without a fight. Received an email this morning from Bay Area News Group's Sales & Marketing Manager, who sent an mp3 of the supposed phone call between my mom and the telemarketer in which my mom agrees to the subscription. The woman in the recording was absolutely NOT my mom and sounded NOTHING like her. The creepy part is that the telemarketer in the call asks the woman to confirm that the home address they'll be sending the paper to is correct and, after reading it back, the unknown woman says yes. The telemarketer tells this woman that the East Bay Times will begin delivering the paper as part of a complimentary 13-week trial, and that "at the end of the 13 weeks, you can continue your subscription at a discounted rate" or send the bill back with "STOP" written on it and no payment. The manager who emailed me also provided me with a screenshot of the telemarketers' internal dashboard; it shows that the subscription started 9/13, and they sent out their first invoice on 9/30 -- 17 days into this supposed 13-week free trial. Then sent another in October and a third in November. So why was Billing trying to collect on a free trial? I called the EBT again and asked to speak with Billing. Milton, the customer service rep, told me there was no direct number to Billing; I said I was transferred there Monday and he said he had no way of connecting me. Clearly made no sense, but I reiterated the situation and said I was calling to make sure the amount owed had been stricken from my account and my account permanently deleted. Milton said, per the account notes, I spoke with a supervisor who escalated the situation and Billing determined that the amount owed couldn't be waived. I said the woman I spoke with didn't say she was a manager and told me she needed to escalate to Finance, who would make the determination. So what story is true? He dodged the question but said all he could do was escalate the issue to try to have the amount waived. I said that wasn't good enough when he just told me that was already done and the EBT refused to waive it. I asked to speak to a supervisor; after a few minutes on hold, Milton said his supervisor, Sally, would be escalating the issue for review. I repeated that wasn't good enough and asked to speak to Sally. After another short hold, he said Sally would be emailing me within 5 to 15 minutes confirming the amount owed was being waived. He refused to give her last name. I emailed the Sales & Marketing Manager back: told him the recording he sent absolutely wasn't my mom, reiterated that none of us have ever spoken to the EBT or requested a subscription, asked him why Billing was trying to collect on a free trial, told him about my conversation with Milton, and said that, now over an hour later, I still had no email from "Sally" and that if I didn't have one by the end of the day I'd be contacting the California Attorney General for consumer fraud. I'd also emailed Finney on Your Side on Monday after calling the EBT the first time, and they'd been in contact with the EBT as well. So I emailed my contact about the updates, who reached out to the EBT again. After a few hours of my life dedicated to this, the Sales & Marketing Manager cc'd the Bay Area News Group Customer Service Director and the head of their telemarketing vendor, and the Customer Service Director confirmed I owe nothing and my account will be permanently deleted. He also confirmed this to the Finney on Your Side contact. DO NOT LET THESE PEOPLE BULLY YOU OR FLEECE YOU FOR MONEY. If you start receiving their paper unsolicited, call the EBT immediately and ask them what's going on. You don't owe a PENNY for something you never requested, agreed to, or ever wanted. And ESPECIALLY not to a company that employs a telemarketing vendor who scrapes people's information, creates fake accounts for them, and pieces together fake telemarketing calls to try to force people into paying up. My parents didn't raise a fool or a coward, and the EBT and BANG had to learn that the hard way today. Stand up for yourselves, people. read more
