Anytime I want a quality print I go to Action. They have a wide selection of papers that you just can not find at the 1-hour photo places. It was my beloved mom's 60th birthday. Another beautiful scarf? Another piece of jewelry? I have given her these throughout the years and I want something a bit more special than those. What to get? What to get? I was at the point of frustration when I remembered a beautiful portrait of her when she was but a babe. This picture shows why every baby in our family was compared to her by my grandmother. This picture shows why her neighbor just found her too adorable one day and bit her all over. This picture should hold a special place, but it never had. It was yellow with age and has a few faded spots here and there. What perfect time to restore it to its former glory than her pending birthday? So I called Action Photo Service. I came in less than a week before my mom's birthday and they had it ready for me the day before the big day without having to pay extra for it. The picture turned out beautifully, although I must point out that it turned out looking more like it has only gone through not too much of a restoration. I was expecting her dress to be restored to its original red color (or at least a hint of it), but it was still a greenish brown. Maybe I should have told them about the original color of the dress or should have asked if they had a more intensive restoration, so I am willing to put the blame on myself and not on them. I should also share that the final payment was a bit frustrating. I found out that they had a promotion for 40% of if you liked them on Facebook, which of course I did. However, for whatever reason, when they checked their page, they couldn't find my name in the list of people who Liked them. I showed them on my phone that I really did, which they saw yet they still took another ten minutes before deciding to honor the discount. The fellas were pleasant throughout the whole thing, but I was slightly frustrated, anyway. Then again, they were older gentlemen so I assume that Facebook is not as easy for them to navigate as it is for me (or Facebook was the one that messed up, which is, of course, very much plausible). The only reason I put up with the wait was because the discount is considerable (their services are not cheap, but they are totally worth every cent). My mom absolutely loved my present! The way her eyes lit up when she saw her clearer and cleaner baby picture made me want to pat myself on the back. I knew I chose the perfect gift to mark such a momentous occasion, and Action Photo Service made me look like a great and sweet daughter! read more

DO NOT GO HERE! THERE ARE WAY BETTER OPTIONS I brought two 35mm C41 and two 35mm B&W rolls here for film processing and prints. I was originally told everything would be ready in "about a week". After that week had passed by he didn't contact me, so I called him that day, (wednesday), only to be told they would be ready that friday. When friday arrived, needless to say, my prints did not. I had called an hour before they closed only to be told they would be ready that coming monday. On that I was was fed up and called again only to be told they had "an issue in the lab" and "they will contact me as soon as they are ready". I waited a full 2 1/2 weeks until I finally recieved my prints and was discounted a mere 15% off of a $123 dollar total. On top of the RIDICULOUS price, I opened one folder of prints only to see that out of a roll of 24 pictures, only 4 came out, yet he still made prints of 20 blank pictures which I was charged for. What a waste of paper! and I took it as a sign of disrespect and greediness. My advice to anybody thinking about going here is simply don't. You will be overcharged and scammed for anything they can charge you for. I recommend going to Looking Glass Photo & Camera in Berkeley. They will treat you with respect and even have everything you need to build your own dark room! I will never go here again. I've only been here twice to buy my HP5 plus film. They were less than $6 each, and seemed cheaper at the store than was on Amazon. I was surprised though, to find out that the Kodak TMAX 400 was more pricier than Ilford, because I didn't think Kodak was all that great. Regardless, I didn't have the most pleasant experience the first time I went in. The man that helped me seemed peculiar, seeing how he peered over me when I went to type in my code as I checked out. It seemed even more odd when he mentioned how it was a good idea to have a long code so no one else would be able to guess it. Then he had the audacity to ask me how many numbers were in my security code! I thought that was pointless and rude; but I went back again because it was the only nearby photo store and I needed my film. The second time around was better because it was someone different that helped me. read more

This place is the real deal. I love shooting in film and using the occasional plastic, overpriced, toy camera now and then, but I am a total layperson when it comes to fine photography. The staff are completely approachable and happy to offer suggestions on whatever you're trying to do... and they even cross-process slide film (for a nominal additional fee). And, while processing is pricier than 1-hour shops, the guys take great care with your prints. read more

A close family member passed away, and we needed a photo touched up for the obituary. Once this shop found out the importance of the photo it seems like this shop over charged my family. I was quoted one price, but charged double when my wife went to pick the photo up. I attempted to call the store were the older Asian guy pretended he didn't understand, and hung up on me. I started to go to the place of business, but felt this honest review would be a better way to handle this. I will also file a complaint with the BBB. This Photo company has terrible service, and predatory business tactics that leave me wishing I would have never done business here. I was in a jam and needed a canvas print done in less than 3 days. I sent files over to Ken at Action Photo and after everything was set in stone and ready for printing, he told me he'd contact me when the canvas was done. Picked it up just today and it looks awesome, a lot better than I expected (I don't ever expect much). But this actually looks like a gallery quality canvas. I'm very satisfied with the canvas and I almost wish I could keep it for myself because it just looks that good, but I'll be donating it to an ALS Fundraiser auction. I have been using Action Photo for a while now, several years anyway. I see good things about Action Photo such as their services and availability of 120 film, Ektar film, etc. and ability to develop it, and most of the staff. The only reason i give a two star rating is because of a guy that works there...."Dennis". I always get treated with crappy attitude, rushed service as if i'm inconveniencing him. In the past, I couldn't pick up a custom made print in the time frame I would like to have and both my print and MY negative were thrown away without even so much as a courtesy call. Far out. I have found other labs in the area that don't have a "Dennis" and will be taking my business elsewhere. Also, they are not cheap. read more

From the reviews it looks like this place produces excellent quality photos. Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to make it that far. I am new to photography and particularly to enlarging photos. This shop was recommended to me by people at Cheap Pete's framing. I kindly asked Dennis, the man at the front desk upon arrival, what it is that sets Action Photo apart from other developing services - specifically, why the large price difference from other places nearby. I would be easily persuaded to spend x amount on my prints with a sincere and reasonable response but instead he began raising his voice, getting extremely defensive and hostile. It was an incredibly unpleasant experience. The other man that stepped in was almost as equally rude. There is absolutely no way I will drop that much money in a place where the two front men working in your establishment are rude and condescending. Shortly thereafter I stopped into a custom framing shop nearby. The framer asked me if I had been to Action Photo. I said yes. He asked if I spoke with Dennis. I said yes. I didn't really know where he was going with his questions. After a pause I said "actually I didn't have the best experience there. I found them to be very rude." The framer shook his head and said that several customers have complained about Dennis and that he doesn't send his customers there anymore for printing because of the poor customer service. I don't care how good your prints are. If you're rude, you're not getting my business. read more

Taking my business to these guys was a big mistake. I wanted 5 pages of family photos and information copied from my scrapbook to share with relatives. The size was larger than I could copy on the machines at Kinko's, so I took them to Action Photo. Ken waited on me and wrote prices on the copy of my order but never gave me a total. I assumed the $95 was for the 5 pages to be copied. When I picked them up the order was $595 plus tax. I asked what the total would be for 4 copies of an additional page and was told the total would be $125, but I was charged $416. The receipt said CD/nc but I was never given the CD. When I asked to speak to the manager, he asked me what my complaint was. I complained about the price, and was told that it was all written down on the original order. However, Ken never gave me a total, only scratched numbers on my pink copy of the order. I was shocked. In all the two orders cost me $806.52 when all I wanted were copies, not framable photos. In addition to the order I gave them the day before, I spent $1100 total at this place. Ken promised the order would be ready Tuesday afternoon. When he called to tell me my order was ready it was 5:00, and when I told him I couldn't make it before closing time, he said I'd have to come in the next day. He told me my order was not the only order they were dealing with. This man clearly does not communicate the costs accurately, and tries to make the customer feel that he/she is the one who does not understand. So, I am out $1,100 for copies I should have taken to Kinko's in the first place. Big mistake. I will also tell anyone with this type of order to take their business elsewhere. I may just see a lawyer about these unjustified price policies. They are way out of line. read more

The stars are for convenience and the quality of the photos, minus stars for being told my photo was ready on the phone, and finding that was untrue when I stopped in in person. I didn't mind a brief wait, I minded the dishonesty. This was compounded by the merchant giving me a ten dollar discount rather then the $15 discount promised by my yelp deal purchase. I was in a hurry and didn't cause a fuss, but I left with a bad taste in my mouth, and despite the convenience, may look elsewhere in the future. read more

KEN IS THE MAN! I was recently put in charge of assembling a photo slide show to commemorate the life of a coaching friend of mine who tragically passed away. Ken took a disparate collection of over 300 photos that I brought in and turned it in to an organized, quality presentation that everyone raved about. There were some computer files of pictures but, there were also some old, dog-earred black and white pictures from the 1950s, some postage stamp-sized pictures as well as some images that looked like they had been through the washing machine. NO PROBLEM . . Ken digitalized them all and the end product was OUTSTANDING! Ken was patient and understanding throughout the process of putting the slide show together. These guys were great. The prices were reasonable and their stock pretty good. They always had what I needed. The service that I got was just awesome. I would take my son with me and they always took time to talk to him and make sure he got some candy. When he showed interested in something, the guy actually sat at the counter with my son and explained to him how it worked. Really great place that pays attention to detail. They are one of a handful of great mini-labs left that will process almost anything from E6 to C-41 and Black and White. They not only do an excellent job of processing, but also have a decent scan compared to other places. Best of all is that they use high quality Print File sleeves, something that most labs ignore. This is great becuase your negs are ready for filing in a folder once you get them back. Have been using Action photo since 2002. I invested in a very expensive 120 film medium format system and Action delivers great results every time. I have entrusted them to old Kodachrome slides from the late 1950's and their prints looked like they were taken recently! When you want the best let them complete what you saw when you clicked the shutter. I am very picky and they make my photos look great! read more

Action Photo has been around for a long time. Throughout the years, they've been consistantly excellent. They're very personable and professional. You can ask them for advice on so many different photograhic topics and they never hesitate to have an answer. My Mother used to use Action way back in the early 80's, then I started using their services as well. Mom has moved out of state, and I away from the East Bay, however, I still use their online services and on occasion, I make a trip out. I had a 1940 photo of my mother and father in law on their wedding day. It had been damaged in a flood. Parts of the photo were missing. They had to fix the stains, rebuild legs and take out cracks. They made beautiful copies on a copy on a CD for me. I was leery of doing this, for fear they couldn't make a good replica. They did a wonderful job. I have done lots of photo repair work, but this was beyond my skills. Terrific job and a big thanks, I now have my christmas present for my mother-in-law. It was the only existing photo of her wedding and she was going to through it away. A little Pricey but TOTALLY worth every penny. read more

If you shoot film and it's anything other then 35mm (they're great with 35mm too) this is the GO TO place to get your negatives and and prints done. I've have brought in the most random rolls of film and had the most odd processing requests for my negatives and they have always come through and have never been put off by it. I've brought in rolls of film that I've found, a random APS cartridge, a home loaded un-marked 35mm cartridge, various 120 film rerolled onto 620 spools, even 127 film and they have processed it without issue or fuss. Yes! They will process 127! No extra charge or anything. Want something push processed or anything goofy, just let them know and they're on it. I don't get prints much from here because I just scan my negs but the very few times that I have I was not disappointed. read more

I ordered prints online from them and they were ready the next day. I got them and I couldn't believe it! They were beautiful! I lost my loving cat companion Mooshi on November 4. Mooshi had been with me for over 13 years. To remember her daily, I wanted to make a large photo reproduction of her and place it in my study on the wall above my workstation, so she is always in my view. Ken of Action Photo produced a gorgeous 16"x20" reproduction on canvas from a small size JPG file of Mooshi that now graces my study. Mooshi was a calico with many shades of color in her fur. Ken seemed very nice and helpful when I had initially brought in some negatives & slides to be developed. I used my Visa card for a deposit which I didn't expect to be used till the services were done which he did do. Problem was when he gave me the price of everything it was so expensive when I was driving home I called Ken and asked if he could just print the slides out for me. When I went to pick them up, to my surprise, he had scanned the slides and 20 negatives onto 2 cd's already and had charged my Visa $327.00. I reminded him of the call and he mentioned how the bank wouldn't return anything and that the work was already done. I was totally taken advantage of. read more
