Great for Programs - Gym Facilities Could Use Some TLC I understand that the YMCA's strength lies in its community-centered programming, not just in being a gym--and in that regard, East Belleville YMCA does a great job. From what I observed during my trial membership, they offer excellent programming, especially for children--before and after school care and summer programs are clearly a strong focus, and it's great to see these important needs being met. My main reason for trying the Y was to evaluate whether the $49/month membership would meet my personal fitness needs, particularly in the gym/exercise area. I found a solid range of equipment available for most muscle groups, including multiple sets of free weights, squat racks, and a variety of dumbbells. The only muscle group missing dedicated support was for lateral raises. While the equipment is a bit dated, that's not necessarily a problem if it's well maintained. Unfortunately, some upkeep is needed. For example, several weight selector pins were rusted, making them difficult to use. A simple rust removal and lubrication would go a long way. I also noticed torn padding on some benches and machines, which could benefit from repair or replacement. Small improvements like these would greatly enhance the functionality and make the gym more competitive with traditional fitness centers. That said, the staff were friendly and welcoming, and the facility has a positive, community-oriented atmosphere. I'd recommend this YMCA to anyone looking for more than just a gym--particularly families and individuals interested in a wide range of programming and activities beyond fitness alone. read more

The flue season is here - they have bottles to spray down the equipment but no paper towels to wipe off the spray. Only one paper dispenser and the last two times no paper towels. I asked at the front desk and the answer was sorry but we are out of paper towels. read more

The rudest desk person I have ever come across. His tone and lack of utter people skills is astounding for someone working with the public. Clearly some hire to try and prove diversity exist at the Y. Not based on any type of actual qualifications. A child talking to adults with a tantrum in every word. Xavier is his name. read more

Love going to this location, staff is great and always enough space and use of machines.

Been a member since the day they opened. Staff is always courteous, friendly and professional. The pool is usually clean-hard to be 100% but they are really good at keeping it clean. Locker rooms are cleaned thoroughly. Always the best part of my day! read more

this YMCA has to be the worst gym i have ever been too. i had my child in there child watch and the main boss dale was so ungodly rude to my child. my kid was so creeped out by dale that she went and hid in the bathroom because she felt as if he was going to do inappropriate stuff to her. my heart feels for anyone else who's kids get scared and creeped out by dale. i will not be returning nor referring any of my friends to this location. beyond disappointing. I started with a personal trainer in late October. That has been one of my best decisions. I work with David and he wants what is best for you. He pushes me out of my comfort zone which is really what I need. David talks to me about my diet and eating habits which has been very beneficial to me. I am stronger and healthier then I have been in a long time. I also feel good about myself and my accomplishment. I look forward to my session with David every week. Nice pool and decent facilities. Visited here for a swim meet and was hoping to watch from the Pool Viewing Area that was created through a donation from Empire Comfort. Unfortunately, the Y had made the decision to use the far end of that area as a concession are for the meet and they covered the viewing windows with plastic so you couldn't see through them. The only alternative to watch was to walk through the locker room shower area (with wet and slippery floors) and go out to the pool deck where there was not adequate seating and, again, had slippery floors, which is to be expected with a lot of water around. However, had they kept the viewing room open, they would avoided the potential for injury. Not a very smart decision from a liability perspective, and makes me wonder how well this facility is run. read more
