Hotel was well located and quiet, a little off the busy street with stores and restaurants but still close enough to walk to Queens U, Ulster Museum, and the Botanic Gardens. Rooms are on the smaller side but have a bath tub and plenty of hot water which is always nice. Little fridge and a kettle provided. Front desk staff is very helpful. Breakfast was more delightful than expected with a full selection of cooked to order dishes as well as the usual fruit and croissants. Definitely worth staying next time I'm in Belfast.

So. Me and the boy were going to go to Stranraer to pick up a cat (long story. well not that…read morelong, but kinda irrelevant here. anyway.) and needed somewhere to stay overnight. We checked laterooms and found a couple of places - but plumped for this one on the basis of good reviews (particularly of breakfast) and the extra star in the rating. And I'm bloody glad we did. Stranraer itself is an odd kind of place, especially now that the ferry doesn't stop there anymore, but if you have any reason to be there and need somewhere to stay I'd heartily recommend staying here. Very comfortable bed, nicely furnished room, friendly (but not in that over-friendly way) owners, who were tremendously kind and cooked a damn fine breakfast. Flat screen tv in the room, nicely stocked hospitality tray and toiletries in the bathroom. Lovely fluffy towels, right temperature, immaculately clean and just overall very welcoming. One note - this is most definitely a NON SMOKING place. They're *very* strict on that. Which was fine with us! Lovely stay, would visit again.

For afternoon tea we got sandwiches and scones (scones, by the way, are sitting on the first floor all day long so if you want one at 2am you can have one) and tones of cute desert items--meringue, two different types of cookies, and some moose. I had trouble with the WiFi, trouble with the TV, and trouble with the electrical power strip in the room so my phone and laptop never got charged. Everyone knows how much we rely on our phones for navigation and information when traveling! Plus, I was charged extra because we were in the "family room" because it was the only room they had left, not because I asked for it. Not a good experience.

We were greeted with a cup of tea and a glass of beer on our arrival and even homemade shortbread. We had a beautiful room and a lounge for our personal use where I could help myself to a wee dram. Breakfast was served overlooking farmland behind the house with sheep and pheasants roaming before a great panorama of Ayr, Prestwick and the Ayshire countryside. They looked after us from arriving until leaving and it felt like staying over at a friends house. Thanks guys. The only difficult thing was leaving.

Our room was clean, comfortable, and well-appointed. It was quiet and cozy, and we slept wonderfully. We loved visiting Islay and only wish we had been able to stay longer. Additionally, Don is very attentive to dietary restrictions and needs. He went way above and beyond in accommodating our need for a gluten-free breakfast. So, if you have food restrictions or allergies, do not hesitate to stay here. Just let Don know, and he'll take of the rest. We hope to return to Islay, and we will certainly return to The Lodge.

A plate full of cold cuts, etc are left in the fridge for breakfast. Two rooms are right on the front, harbor side. We had the room in back that overlooks a cute back courtyard and has a very nice, modern bathroom. The little Port Ellen market is a few doors down and the two restaurants that were open for dinner when we visited were within easy walking distance. Just around the corner, you'll find the Three Distilleries path, a walk to Laphroig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg with beautiful ocean views. It's also easy to catch a public bus to other points on the island...and we did have time for a visit to Bowmore, which was well worth it. Some people try to make it to all 8 distilleries on the island, but we were happy to visit four. We didn't meet our host Don in person, but the woman who was assisting him with keys, etc was friendly and helpful, and even made a phone call for us to get a restaurant reservation. Carol's taxi got us to and from the airport with ease. Our time in Islay was the highlight of our Scotland trip for both of us....and only one is a whiskey drinker. Hopefully we will be able to come back some time.
