I grew up in the east end of Peterborough and have been going to the East City Coffee Shop my entire life. Most of the people are regulars such as myself. The food is greasy yes but for me if I wanted to watch my diet I wouldn't be ordering hash browns and bacon in the first place (Hash browns here are phenomenal). It is a mom and pop joint with a boat load of personality and a great breakfast. I suggest if you can't take a joke or are easily offended to try a chain like cora's without a personal touch. Places like these give character to the community, it just happens to be a bonus the food is delicious. The world is too sensitive now and people can't take a joke so do me a favor and leave the seats for the people who appreciate a good local business. read more

A little pricy especially that they charge for your second cup of coffee. Good breakfast, really good home fries. We used to go all the time until one day when we were yelled at because my 21 year old daughter did not eat everything off her plate. Ma and Pa kept looking at us and giving us dirty looks. Then when I asked how they'd arrived at the total amount of our bill using that cash register, I was told I should have looked at prices before I ordered. It's pretty hard to beat their classic breakfast offerings and the prices are pretty hard to beat, too. There is something about their breakfast potatoes that almost addictive so beware! My two friends and I often go out to eat and catch up on life. With each visit we like to try a new spot. This was actually our first negative experience and surprisingly since I used to absolutely love this restaurant. In fact when I first arrived I gloated to the owner about his parents and how much I used to love coming here. My friends and I ordered although they were very uncomfortable as there was no room in such a small and busy place. The food is delicious and I still would have recommended here if what I'm about to tell you didn't happen. We decided to go and sit at a park (we were hoping a table outside or in would open up). When we got to the park we dug into our food and I was disappointed that there was bacon throughout the hash browns. I called and the waitress was extremely rude asking me to come back to pretty well prove that there is bacon - as they "do not put bacon in our potatoes". We returned and the man behind the counter and the two waitresses, both blondes one with tattoos all over her arms were incredibly rude calling my two friends and liars (nice thing to say to a sick customer). This man screamed at three women and physically grabbed our take out containers from our hands which of course we retaliated to. He gave us our money demanding that we leave. Not only do I have stage 4 cancer which I take a chemo therapy that disrupts my immunity. I could have been allergic to pork or not able to consume because of my religion. I could have fed it to my children who have never consumed a meat product in their life. It's terrible and makes me ill to think about because I actually have recommended this place so many times! I am still in shock over the experience. Regardless of why we were there. Regardless of what we were unsatisfied about... it is not only unprofessional to act the way this "gentlemen" did but I was actually frightened by a man yelling and physically grabbing food from me! -Take accountability for your cooks actions-Usually our lunch dates are fantastic. Brilliant greasy spoon! We have only had the breakfast here but the amount of food you get combined with the quality for the price is perfect. Their signature recipe hash browns are addictive and the service is a delight. Their newer waitress is very friendly and does her absolute best to remember the orders of the regulars and often nails it. This is now our go-to breakfast spot. read more

So this happened: I went for brunch with one of my most favourite couples today at the East City Diner. You know, that diner just across the bridge from downtown with the overly greasy potatoes? When the old man, whose wife often yells at him while they work, arrived to take our order he told my two women friends to stop touching each other. He said it was not allowed. He wagged his finger at them. And he actually flinched when he thought one of my friends was going to touch his arm. And when she, very politely, asked if he was joking or trying to be humorous, he claimed he didn't speak english. Astonished and insulted, we decided to leave. I am hurt and angry about how my wonderful friends were treated. read more

In terms of Peterborough's overwhelming amount of places to eat, this has to be one of the worst customer experiences I've had. It starts off with a decrepit old man shouting loud inappropriate things to you demanding your order even prior to you being able to see the menu. At one point within 2 minutes of being at this hole in the wall, we were greeted by a bad taste in jokes regarding the meat of choice being that of a dead female (in bad taste and personally offending). Though we regarded this at a language barrier we proceeded to order. The menu in itself was the regular ram jam of possibilities. After ordering our meals we waited 10 minutes for coffee (of which should be explained that each tea spoon of sludgey goodness is an extra charge) after the meal had arrived it was for the most part decent, though nothing spectacular for the 2 dollars it would cost to make at home. Now the best part, there register only paying cash and providing no receipts they proceed to nickle and dime you for every tea spoon of coffee ever slab of questionable meat products and leave you feeling probed over the counter for all to see. If you have any questions in concern to the bill they proceed to pull there terribly written menu out and proceed to ask if you can read or speak English, ironically enough this is their second language. This ended our experience with the unsatisfied feeling of lack lustre customer service and bad tasting jokes. this was our first experience to this cafe and surely to be our last. On this day they were celebrating 15 years of being in the business, but I doubt that it will last 15 years more. read more
