    Dan tat egg custards
    Joanne Y.

Solid 3 for decent dim sum food. Nothing spectacular, but also nothing terrible either. Among the disappointments were: The har-gow shrimp dumplings and ha-cherng shrimp wrapped in noodle. Among the highlights were: the pork/shrimp/peanut dumplings, the congee, and the dan tat egg custard. The food was all mostly freshly prepared so none of it felt like it was sitting out for long. The only other thing I wish they had was a more complete menu served by the push carts for a more traditional feel! Otherwise, for non-Chinese speakers this place is nice enough to provide a full menu with pictures and a paper ordering sheet for you to pick what items you want.

Always come here for the yum cha. Not too pricy and the food was great. The service was not too good though. Ordered some congee once, the staff just crossed it off the paper/receipt without telling me that they ran out of it :o

First observation is that it's a trolley-less service. Ordering is done on a form and after submitting, waiters gradually bring the dishes out as soon as they are ready. There are photos on the menu but this system makes ordering intuitive for inexperienced Yum Cha diners where they cannot see and smell potential dishes in front of them before ordering. You would think that this system of ordering would infer that dishes are made to order. Unfortunately for us, most of the dishes seemed to be reheated and frozen dumplings heated up in microwaves taste much better. PORK AND PRAWN DIM SIMS - Siu Mai Tough and chewy pork centre, these are supposed to be so addictive. Siu Mai addicts can get cured with a bite of these bad boys. PRAWN GOW GEES - Har Gau All the dumpling skins were ripped and the filling bland probably because the flavour got steamed out of the wrap. TARO CRESCENTS - Wu Qwok Taro was cold inside sign that it was not freshly fried, despite this it was pretty good. BBQ PORK PUFF - Char Siu Sow Probably the best of the worst today, pastry was good although bbq pork inside was below average. CHINESE BREAD STICK WRAPPED IN RICE NOODLES - Jar Leung The only fresh dish was the bread stick (fried-dough) wrapped in rice noodles. One or two bites are fine, but it gets boring pretty quickly. Conclusion The only positive is the free Wifi and opening hours. Food is very overpriced compared to the taste and technical execution on offer. The unfriendly ordering system makes it a big no-no for uninitiated/first-time Yum Cha diner. @thesydneynoob

This is the entrance on the Sussex St side, but their is also an entrance on the Dixon St side too.

When I think of Yum Cha in Sydney, this has been my go to venue for years! While it is still pretty awesome... it would not be terribly hard to convince me that I should go some place else for Yum Cha goodness. So what has changed? Well East Ocean used to be a bustling hive of activity (as are most Yum Cha venues) with hot trolleys doing laps of the room with tasty wafts of unknown food passing close by. This is normally followed by a quick and often impatient explanation, in what might be English, but is more likely to be Cantonese, of what exactly we are being offered. Well... East Ocean is like that no more. Now and again you'll still see a trolley or two come out (though mostly it is just the desert one) but the other 90% of them have been replaced with an ala carte type ordering system. You get given a piece of paper when you sit down, and as you look through the menu you mark how many of what you want, and give it to the waiter. While this is perfect for the non-Chinese speaking customers *raises hand*, and likely this ensures that you are getting your a fresher order much faster than the lottery system of hoping your hot trolley will contain what you desire, it does take away something of the mystique from the entire process. That said... for me... and likely my unrefined Chinese palate, the food was still good. It came out quickly, and the service was (please don't be too shocked) friendly! Having come to Yum Cha for years this is something that really threw me off my game, but I soldiered on. I enjoyed everything that was brought out right up to, and including, the mango pudding (which is a must for me at any Yum Cha). Then the next difference became apparent. The prices had gone up. Fair enough with CPI as it is in Sydney this was bound to happen, but I am pretty sure I could find the same quality food in China town much cheaper. Would I come back? Absolutely. Knowing what I am ordering is a somewhat gratifying feeling, and not having to be interrupted by people trying to convince me the I should eat chicken feet or the like, was actually quite nice. Though if anyone has a better venue (and no... the Marigold will not be taken as an option), then please let me know. I would love to try it.

East Ocean is my favourite place for yum-cha in the city. From joining the line of would-be diners that slides down the red velvet stairs to fitting in my last bite of dessert (ALWAYS the red bean buns), a meal at East Ocean is an experience, not just a tummy-topper. Whilst the restaurant is open from 10am - 2am daily, I'm yet to decipher when their busy period is, as the place seems to be full at every hour I've been there. The food-carts snake their way around the sea of tables, each shelf filled with salt & pepper squid, ginger crab, shark-fin dumplings, dim sums, noodles, Chinese greens and vegetarian and meat-filled buns. I love the anticipation of yum cha, the excitement of not knowing what's to come, keeping your eyes peeled for something that might be yummy and trying something that you haven't a clue what it is, simply because the trolley's tell you to. But perhaps more than the excitement, and even more than the shark-fin dumplings, and perhaps even more than the grilled scallops, my favourite thing about East Ocean is watching the staff at work. There's a distinct (and colour coded) hierarchy of staff working the floor, a hierarchy that is both glaringly obvious and seamlessly efficient. Like watching a foreign martial arts film without the subtitles, observing the staff at East Ocean is captivating. As they call out orders to one another, I swallow my anonymous mouthful and watch the operation with wide eyes, despite not understanding a word of what's being said.

Standard yum Cha here nothing stood out though I feel when you enter from the non Chinatown side there is less service. There wifi is weak and prices feel a little higher than other places! I don't remember seeing a lift upstairs so those in wheelchairs or have difficulty climbing stairs I don't know how you would get up there

Dim sum of chicken feet, pork ribs, and beef tripe.

My friends and I came here to eat dim sum and we had reservations but it was not needed since we showed up right when they open. Not busy until later on during lunchtime. The dim sum that I ordered were chicken with sticky rice, chicken feet, beef tripe, and some other stuff that I can't remember. It was all standard. The prices were a little higher than what I am used to. They did not have the rolling carts. We had to order our items and they bring it out to us. It is a nice place to try out when you are craving dim sum.

    Shrimp dumplings

Went during restaurant's soft opening. Lots of renovation work still going on - toilet not flushing yet - but kitchen was fully functional. Dim sum was good. Dumplings and shumai were filled with lots of stuffing, although everything was on the salty side. A little one note after two or three baskets.

We came on a Sunday at 1:00P and only had to wait 10 minutes to be seated. Most tables are on the covered outdoor patio with just a few others inside the open air setting. We started off with a raw plate to share, followed by individual entrées. + SALMON CEVICHE (A$28): Thin slices of salmon in a bright zesty citrus soy dressing, with dollops of avocado cream and lime aioli. The salmon was so smooth, buttery and super fresh. I rarely eat ceviche since I usually don't care for citrus flavors, but I enjoyed this since the salmon remained the star of the plate. + DAINTREE BARRAMUNDI FILLET GRILLED (A$38): A perfectly sized fillet was delicate, moist and didn't have any bones! The skin was grilled and crisp like a chip. Normally, I'm not a fan of skin on fish, but this was impeccable. A few cauliflower florets in a flavorful chermoula added a bold punch. I also loved the salted barra croquette, a fritter of potato and barramundi, which was fried to a golden brown and light inside. All of this was on top of a fresh mint yogurt which rounded out this very cohesive dish. Others in my group enjoyed the swordfish fillet and the fish of the day, which was a mahi mahi. Our waitress enticed us with two desserts which all of us shared as a sweet ending. + DARK CHOCOLATE PARFAIT (A$18): A rich chocolate pudding layered with Queen Garnet plums and topped with large chocolate shavings. The pudding was creamy and rich while the ripe plums added sweetness with a hint of tartness. + TOASTED COCONUT & MANGO CRUMBLE (A$16): A delightful refreshing coconut sorbet came with juicy cubes of fresh mango on top. Some granola crumbles provided crunch and substance to an otherwise light dessert. I never would have guessed this is both gluten-free and dairy-free. Our server was excellent and took wonderful care of us by checking back and keeping our waters full. We appreciated her recommendations as well. On top of the great service and delicious food, every dish had a lovely presentation and the pricing was reasonable for the quality of each plate.

Cirrus, names after the cloud like apartment that sits above it. We recommend that you all also promptly book in, it is absolutely incredible and certainly deserves all the accolades it has received. Open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week, you can sit inside or alfresco, enjoying views of our breathtaking harbour. A crisp and stylish place with minimal decor, yet it feels classy with its floor to ceiling glass. Chefs coming to you from the the Bentley, Monopole and Yellow restaurants and Chef Brent Savage has put together an array of seafood delights with incredible flavour combinations and the freshest selection of seafood, sustainably caught. Don't fret, if you have a non seafood eater amongst you, there's vegetarian and meat options as well. The waitress informed us that the dishes at Cirrus were designed to be shared. As a party of 6, she recommended 6 entrees, 6 mains and 4 sides. We ordered one less main than her recommendation and we were extremely full. The meats in particular were very generous servings. We also shared 3 desserts. We began with a few oysters, served with a vinaigrette and these were a beautiful start to our dining experience. We shared a number of starters including their famous Ocean trout with smoked beetroot and pepperberry and toast. The smoked beetroot lay atop the ocean trout mixture, almost like a starfish and the texture was simply divine. The small plate of raw Cobia (like a sashimi) with salted apple, turnip and sesame was quite refreshing. We shared two plates of the roasted King Prawns and Koji Butter. These prawns were were beautifully cooked, and a generous lashing of the butter sauce. We also really enjoyed the Fremantle octopus with kohlrabi and green chilli salsa. The octopus was super fresh, tender and nice crisp outer flavour, topped with ribbons of kohlrabi. Given Cirrus is primarily a seafood restaurant, we could go past having a number of fish for our mains. We enjoyed the the Hiramasa kingfish with grilled cucumber, buttermilk and mint. Nice and soft fish with a pleasant sauce. The cone bay barramundi was also lovely and was presented with some beautiful coils of charred onions and watercress. The roasted swordfish was another winner, served with fennel, buckwheat and bottarga. The Grilled black angus rib eye, 500 g was a big serving, and served with kombu butter, a very good comfort food choice. We ordered it medium and it was perfectly cooked to our request. The barbecued lamb neck may not be something you'd expect at a seafood restaurant but for the meat lovers amongst us, it is a brilliant dish. We shared all the sides; chips and aioli, radicchio salad, an absolutely beautiful plate of grilled asparagus with fresh curd and black olive, as well as a lovely serve of zucchini with hazelnut, yoghurt and turmeric. As for the drinks, Sommelier Nick Hildebrandt has also organised a wide selection of wines, 500 from around the world where you can get advice on the best to pair with your food selection. We chose a bottle of Riesling, which was a lovely pairing. All of this amongst 6 diners and including 3 bottles of wine and bread came to $130 each, which is pretty reasonable given the size of the servings and amount of food. If you'd prefer, the tasting menu is available for $110 each for the whole table, though we preferred to order so we could try a greater range of options. We absolutely loved dining at Cirrus and can't recommend it enough!

Inside has a more formal ambiance we appreciated, but outside - assuming no cruise ship in the way - is probably the way to go for views, as we requested an inside top floor table with a view and didn't get much of one; turns out not many tables inside with a view. Service was mostly good but oddly slow in a few spots, the wine list was on iPad, and our pomme puree (mashed potatoes) came quite late. Steak was very good. MB7+ tomahawk is a terrific presentation, perfectly cooked to your specification, and described in detail. If you want the very highest quality (MB9) unfortunately thay was not on the menu when we visited, but it was surprisingly difficult find higher than MB7 on the regular menu of any of their competitors so I digress... (keyword: regular) Rest of the food was excellent. Little gem salad and chips are included with your tomahawk, the pomme puree was deliciously creamy if you like creamy mashed potatoes, broccolini hit the spot. And the scallops, while modest in appearance, won high praise. As someone who normally has a hard time going out for steak, given I can almost always make a better one at home, I do have to say that for a special occasion, 6HEAD was on the mark.
