My husband and I stopped at Eastern Sushi on on our way back to the city from Atlantic City--and wow, we were seriously impressed. I had the Golden Salmon Roll (swapped the tobiko for masago) and it was super fresh with really high-quality fish. My husband got the hibachi scallops, which came out piping hot and perfectly cooked. Honestly, the food here is better than some spots we've tried in Manhattan. The restaurant itself isn't fancy, but it's very clean and the service was great. Love this place! It's close to home and the sushi is fresh. We happened to come across this quaint sushi spot because I didn't want to go far since it ridiculously cold out and I wanted something fresh and clean because we just got out the gym. We have gone here 2x in the past week and half, and the sushi does not disappoint! We still have to try their actual foods, next time I'll get the karaage. If your around Laurence Harbor/Matawan area, this is a move quick spot to go if you're in the mood for sushi and it's not expensive! I def recommend this place! I visited this restaurant with my friends for lunch yesterday. We ordered the lunch special, a seafood katsu and a special bento box. The taste of the food was okay, and the rolls were okay. However, I'd like to talk about the menu composition. First, the seafood katsu came on a plate with only fried seafood and rice. Although they brought some salad and miso soup before that, they took them away too quickly, so when I started eating the fish katsu, I felt a bit overwhelmed without any side salads like vegetable salad or potato salad. It would have been much better to have some vegetable sides served along with it. Secondly, the special bento allowed us to choose two options, and I picked avocado roll and salmon roll. But, there were no vegetables in the bento box at all. It would have looked much nicer if there were some edamame or vegetable salad included. Also, since I had already ordered two rolls, I didn't touch the rice that came with it. Eating rolls and rice together didn't seem like a good combination. It would be better to include a different side instead of rice. Well, I'm not sure if I'll visit this place again. read more

I usually get a bento box with sushi and chicken teriyaki and it's always delicious. but there's so many great things on the menu to try and everyone who works here is super friendly and helpful. Excellent first time dining experience. Came in around 1:30pm on a Wednesday. We were seated almost immediately with a decent amount of traffic either dining in or picking up. Garden salad with ginger dressing was delicious and well portioned. Ordered three regular rolls which came with that garden salad. Chicken Udon Soup was decently portioned, very flavorful, and everything you would expect. Would highly recommend for a good sushi or udon fix. We will definitely be returning. read more

This place has well-priced lunch specials for $9, but it's definitely not my favorite sushi spot. I usually get the Shrimp Tempura Roll with Miso Soup and a Salad, and I definitely leave feeling full. The quality is just always a little eh to me. They also don't have Wonton Soup, which is always a bummer. As for interior, the place is rather small and can get packed during lunch. I recommend going with a small group, otherwise, get take-out. If I were to give just the food a rating, I'd probably give a 4.5. Big portions, and the rolls were loaded with the fish, and there was minimal rice which is how it should be. The service however was nonexistent, but I guess I didn't mind because my friend and I didn't really need much attention. We were the only ones in the whole place so the food came out fast. Here's my problem with them that just pissed me off so much - in the end, you're supposed to receive the check at your table. They never gave us the check and waited until we came up to the hostess stand to open up our checkbook in front of us while the hostess/our server just STARED. One thing I can't STAND is when a server tries to intervene and tell us how much money we should put out. EXCUSE ME but I am going to decide what tip you will get and how much money I will put out. Servers should NOT make the customer uncomfortable like that and it was unacceptable. When dining with friends, that's something we discuss in private. This is one of my favorite spots around the area for sushi. I love the staff and the food is great. Their price point is okay (although I would prefer some specials from time to time, so I wouldn't have to pay $13 for a special roll) and their food is really fresh. And as everybody stated previously this place is small, which IMO isn't so bad. Typically I've been one of the only customers inside when I dine in. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. THEY WILL TRY TO RIP YOU OFF!!!!!!! my husband just went to pick up six rolls that we ordered and two hand rolls. We happened to order six rolls that fall under the "regular roll" category and are also listed under the "three roll combo" part of their menu. When my husband got there and realized he exact same rolls would be cheaper if we had just ordered them as "combo" orders, he asked them to charge him the roll combo price. The lady at the host/cashier stand refused to honor this. Ok. The sushi chef comes over and proceeds to tell my husband they wont give him the roll combo price because get this: "we give you less sushi in your roll if you order the roll combo." HE ACTUALLY SAID THAT. So basically the roll combo is slightly cheaper than ordering the rolls individually because they skimp you on the amount of fish per roll and give you more rice. STAFF ADMITTED. Rude. Obnoxious. Bad business practice and your sushi isn't even that good anyway. We will NEVER return. read more

Consistently good sushi! My go-to spot for not super expensive, fresh sushi. They have great lunch specials that include two rolls, soup or salad, for less than $9. Their hibachi lunch specials are really good too. There's a small dining room where you can eat-in or they also deliver. I probably come here about once or twice a month and am always pretty pleased. Definitely a good place to try for take-out or a quick lunch with coworkers/friends. read more

I went to Eastern Sushi because I saw a coupon in my mailbox. I thought the sushi at Eastern sushi was fine. Good size portions. We ordered 3 rolls. the Godzilla Roll, the Scallop Explosion, and the Dragon Roll. Doesn't the Scallop Explosion roll sound like something filthy? I thought that they were all good, but the Dragon Roll was a little fishy. And I've eaten plenty of eel so it wasn't normal fishy it was a bit too fishy. The problem with good sushi is that it's expensive and I always feel like life is too short to eat good sushi. You want to eat great sushi. I think in the area that Kicky's is much nicer looking inside, and they have 40% off every Monday and Wednesday. And Ganga Asian Bistro and Nemo Asian Fusion in Keyport are both better. Now they do offer delivery which intrigues me because leaving the house to put food in my face is annoying. read more

We hot the lunch shrimp bento and the lunch sushi with an ell avovado roll on the side. Honestly the bento was pretty underwhelming. The shrimp tastes like it was cooked by itself with some brown and raw red onions poured on top. The California roll in the bento was a bit lackluster too. The white rice tastes awkward; it didnt even look like Japanese sticky rick - we think they might overcooked it or something. I will say that the eel avocado roll was very good. But again, it was a very tiny roll for $5.50 - I was expecting a little bit more aince I have had a bit bigger in other Sushi shops. The place is small but clean. One of the freshest sushi place to go to. You love sushi, don't think twice and just go! My girl eats sushi and she says this is up there for freshness. I'm more a california roll guy, I don't like raw fish but the meat roll that they have definitely makes up for it. I also get shrimp and chicken tempura with fried rice. Very good! We were very loyal customers. When called to complain, they brushed off my complaint. Said we can do another order, but we would have to come to pick it up.
