The Eastmont Mall (or Eastmont Town Center as it is referred to nowadays) is a pretty sad mall. Built in 1970, the large two-level mall served the vast southeast side of the city of Oakland. The mall's floorplan is relatively typical, w/ a "T" shape & two large anchor stores Originally, the mall's primary anchors were JCPenney's & Mervyn's. A Safeway Supermarket & a Woolworth's were amongst the more junior tenants. A tenant of note was National Dollar Stores, which was the first Chinese-American-owned chain store. There was also a toy & model store that had an impressive range of products. Unfortunately, both no longer exist as businesses in any form. The mall fell into steep decline in the early 1990s when JCPenney's & Mervyn's left, & the reputation of the declining neighborhood kept most suburban shoppers away. Through the 90s, the mall was gradually converted into county offices, including a health clinic, police station, & other services such as a Planned Parenthood. The strip mall portion continues to house retailers, & there are a few isolated stores or cafes within the mall itself, but only a few. Now it is just a sad place to see, w/ it's heydays long in it's rear-view mirror. While it looks like a ghost town, it is not dilapidated -- just empty. So very empty... Because Eastmont Mall hasn't functioned as a true "mall" for a good 15 years, it's retained much of its vintage early 1970s decor. This is/was a pretty plain & somewhat ugly mall, but it is stuck in a time warp, & for that reason alone it's kind of interesting. Also, it's available as a location to film your next movie. Any interested takers?... Santa's Yelper sez: "It's like watching Final Fantasy Spirits Within --- There's no one in there!"

Not what it used to be like back in the days. We moved into the area in 1990. Stay away unless your from Oakland. It's Hood all day.

But in the past I also frequented: Verizon (we are T mobile customers now). Togo sandwiches - Not a sandwich person any more. See's Candy (now closed) - Every holiday, buying gifts for the team. Ohana Hawaiian BBQ - Used to get my mid day musubi snack here. Dollar Store - I am not a customer with this brand any more. Atmosphere - Decent size mall. Plenty of parking. Many vendors in the parking lot on weekends. Service - Self service. Price - Reasonably priced. Caters to cost conscious people. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since the late 1980s. 2014 - 1 GBPS Internet.

Sadly the Sees Candies is closed. That was one of the nearest ones to where I live and probably one of the ones that has been around for the longest. Drakes is a highlight. If you have never been you need to go. One of the best places in this mall that isn't an uninteresting chain. Home Depot. Been to this one tons and tons of times. Love Home Depot. Many of the faucets and some pieces of lumbar are from this store. Had some carpet installed from here using their contractors. Walmart -- keeps me coming back. Mr Moose likes some things I can only easily find here. Meanwhile I grab some other things. Parking lot is big and there is always a spot open - maybe the hardest place to find a spot is near Walmart. Mall in general is clean and never had an issue when parking my car here.

Lots of retail options too, like TJ Maxx, Old Navy, West Marine, Daiso, Ulta, and more. They even have Crunch Fitness near Marugame Udon. The female worker at the cashier wanted to get her family in (they were right in front of us) and lied to the rest of the line that was in the building already they it would be fine. Her family was the only family that was allowed to take professional photos with Santa before security came to cut the line off. Nepotism at its finest despite the fact it was already 4p. Common sense and common courtesy was lacking in Christmas spirit today. Luckily, Santa had the Xmas spirit and took selfies with the rest of us in line (the long line outside, I'm not so sure). The employees need to be trained in managing the line better and cutting it off before people stand in line for over an hour. Thanks, Santa! Next year they should have two monitors - one to take the photos and the other so people can select. Then all the employees can be doing something useful at all times to keep the line moving along. Otherwise, it was the same person - the photographer taking the photos, helping choose the photos, explaining the packages, etc. Super inefficient when there is a line - you could tell they weren't used to it.

A "manager" called me back and left a voice mail message saying "Clara" is the only employee in the East Bay. We bought our house 29 years ago and Penneys sold us window coverings for the whole house. Years later we hired them again to replace most of the first original ones.
